We had our anniversary meal here, and we're not impressed. The man that greeted us and took us to our seat was pleasant. We were also served by a younger man with specs, who brought our drinks, he had no customer service skills. Our mocktails were extremely sugary and the tandoori chicken was so salty I couldn't finish it. The menus had sticky food residue on them. We asked for dessert menus and those were handed to us with back turned against us, zero interaction, so we just decided to leave at this point, without even looking at the dessert menu. The food is average, so is the service. Standards are low. We're never coming back.

Visited for Sunday Dinner. Specifically asked for food to come hot. The waitress noted this on our order, but, still it came cold. They took mine away to remake whilst my partner in true British style didn't want any fuss. We ate our meals seperately. A terrible eatery though the young waiting staff tried very hard.

Came for Sunday lunch and had the new sharer board. It came with the most moist tasty pink roast beef and some beautiful roast chicken . The servings of meat were very generous. It also came with roast potatoes , roast carrots, cabbage and broccoli and we ordered extra cauliflower cheese. The Yorkshire pudding was light and huge! Unlimited home made gravy finished it off perfectly . Absolutely amazing and only £15 each for the dinner and an additional £4 for the cauli. Couldn’t fault it one bit and told the owner/manager ? So . Defo one to go back to

We had the £10 lunch menu meal and I could say that's just about what it worth. Small pot of shin beef cottage pie with veg that was the best part of the meal, the cottage pie was full of fat. But the place was jam packed so maybe we were both unlucky as both of us a load of fat in the cottage pie. Tiny glass of wine was also included in the price. But £5.95 for a beer is where they make their money.

Have visited regularly over the last couple of years but this was by far the most disappointing visit. Tandoori chicken skewers were essentially tasteless, very little spicing or seasoning and the tiniest bit of dip provided to try to liven it up. Swapped out the Cajun chips for truffle fries and noticed got charged £1.50 for the pleasure when Cajun, truffle and others are all with a £1.50 surcharge so surely swapping the Cajun fries it comes with to an equivalent shouldn’t have invoked the charge…. My son had the burger which was he said was nice, as was my wife’s beef kebab so maybe I just picked wrong. Still, not the quality I’m used to at Retreat so won’t be rushing back.

We visited The Retreat for Christmas Day lunch. I have to say it was perfect in every way! From the moment we arrived we were met by happy, smiling faces and a feeling of instant Christmas cheer! We had an elderly family member with us and as we were seated upstairs great care was taken helping her to the table. That was really appreciated, thank you. This is a restaurant that understands it’s the finer detail that makes something extra special. The service was incredible, extremely polite, efficient staff who never stopped smiling and gave you the impression they really wanted to be there. The food was out of this world. Great quality ingredients, served piping hot and with a lovely wait in between courses which really added to the dining experience. I have to give a nod to the gravy! Oh my goodness! Just the most delicious ever! As previously mentioned, it’s all in the detail. So a massive thank you to all of you at The Retreat. Your hard work and professionalism made our day really special. You should all be so proud. Well done! Can’t wait to return.

First time visit for Sunday lunch and very pleasantly surprised. Beautifully converted from an old church, the internal design and colour scheme make for a comfortable contempory setting. The staff were welcoming and efficient.. The menu was a choice between a fixed table d'hote or a reasonable selection of a la carte items. From the fixed menu, the roast beef was lean and tender, the vegetables cooked and presented well. The second course toffee tart was quite delicious and, washed down with a selection of drinks, the whole was very reasonably priced. Ok, this was only a Sunday lunch, but compared to the usual pub experience, this is a far better option. We will certainly return.

Staff helpfully moved us upstairs as we were seated right under the speaker. However, upstairs didn't feel any better, bad music blaring to the point of being difficult to hold a conversation. They had explained they could not turn it down. My friend had the beer battered fish and chips, at my recommendation. The fish was large, fresh and nicely cooked. I ordered the thai chicken curry. This was absymal - a roundel of rice, which I recognised as pre-cooked packet coriander rice sachet. On this has been poured a dribble of clear green curry flavoured juice, with some green beans on the side. Atop this pinged pile were two chicken fillets in some sort of coating which bore no relation to the rest of the meal, having seemingly just landed there. They were almost impenetrably leathery and flavourless - again, I suspect, pinged from frozen. I can't identify any element of this meal that could have been rightly called a curry. The food here has steadily gone down over the years and, although they are pleasant, it is obvious the staff have checked out. I shall not be returning.

After it being a few years since my last visit, this was a related birthday meal with my son's friends. Having booked for 7pm, we were finally taken upstairs to our table @ 7.15 & even though we'd pre-booked our food, didn't start to receive it till 8pm. Drinks flowing (which is how these places make their money), we had our mains by 8.30 & puds eventually, for those who had room. Good food & staff who served us, thank-you. However for the high prices you pay, same old story, a bit of decorating wouldn't go amiss in the seating area & as for the ladies' toilets, lovely peacock on the wall, but serious consideration is needed inside, know you don't go have your meal in there, good job really, as they let the place down. We have been to the retreat on many occasions, so this review reflects from the earlier times pre-2019 until now. The change in the food is the most obvious point of note. You are now served main meals on 'baby' plates. The content of the food is very poor. Tasty as it may be, you find your plate filled with items you are not going to eat. For £22.00 I received two small pieces of chicken, two small pieces of Monk fish, two small king prawns, and the rest were made up of chunks of chorizo and well burnt peppers. My wife's meal was the same. In the past, we have brought family and friends who have all complimented the retreat. But as I have said, this was pre-2019. The value for money now is very poor, and the menus are wipe clean affairs. It's not good for a resteraunt of this standing. The blame lies directly with the management and owners who are trying to claw money back from the Covid days. Unfortunately, you have now lost our business, and we were frequent customers. Arrived home having spent £76.00 for two main meals. Two small wines and two beers. Still hungry. This review is a very honest review from a local couple who are not best pleased not to have the Retreat in our list of local venues anymore.

Beth was so helpful in organising the event and rang on the day offering us the bar instead as it may rain. We decided to stay outside and chose not to have the roof up as we didn’t anticipate rain. We didn’t think it would be so windy and cold though on the August Bank Holiday weekend and ended up moving inside after about an hour anyway. The staff could not have been more helpful all round including the bar staff who made it very easy to order drinks to be put on a tab. The pizzas were delicious. They cut up and served the birthday cake without prior notice. They let us stay after the finish time. All in all a great afternoon and Retreat made it very easy for us. Thank you.

Saturday at 5.30pm Welcome service is great but all goes downhill from the moment you sit down. The service is rubbish. After 15 mins we finally got our drink order in and then the food. It took a long time to both order and be served. There was just the 2 of us. We ordered a garlic bread to share, a starter and burgers. They brought ALL the food to the table at the same time. It was ridiculous and way too much. I sent back the burgers so we could eat our garlic bread & starters first. When the burgers came back they had obviously just been under a hot plate. The buns were hard and roasted and considering it was the restaurant who brought everything to the table at once, and for the price, I would have thought they could’ve at least made some fresh fries. I had to ask for S&P and sauces. Nothing was offered. It was absolutely terrible. I had my very elderly mum with me and went to the Retreat as she doesn’t get out much. I just wanted her to have a nice time. So I just paid and left as I didn’t want her to be hearing any complaints.

The Retreat is very popular. There were many diners. We were sat for over 15 minutes before we were asked about drinks. I felt that was too long but my main complaint would be the very noisy 'music.' I personally felt it was too loud and with a heavy beat. I had trouble trying to converse with another in my party who was sat opposite me. Only a matter of a meter or so, but I had to cup my hand to my ear to hear what was being said. It was my first time and for me my last. Others clearly enjoy yhe Retreat, it just wasn't for me.

No one ever came back to take the dessert order so we just paid for our mains and left. It’s a shame as everything else was nice just the overall service let it down unfortunately.

This place has gone down hill over the last few years. We were here with friends recently and had a table booked for 6:15, we arrived slightly early so were told to get a drink at the bar while we wait for our table. We were stood at the bar for 15 minutes before we were served and were then told to take a seat and the drinks would be brought over. 10 minutes later we could see the drinks on the side of the bar but no one taking them, the beer got so flat the bar staff whirled straw in it to get the head back!! In the end I got up and collected the drinks myself. It got to 7pm and we had still been seated for our 6:15pm table so again we got up to ask when our table would be ready. 5 minutes later we were then shown to our table 50 minutes after our original booking time. The waitress who took our food order was lovely and the wait for drinks ordered through her didn’t take as long. The starters were fine, non of them blew us away you can get similar standard of starters in some good local pubs. The mains were a let down however, the meat on the kebabs were so dry and chewy we left most of it, the bun for the back and blue burger was not available and the tomahawk steak was overcooked slightly. For a bill that was £170 for 4 people this didn’t hit the spot to be honest. When you are charging that much for an evening meal I at least don’t expect barmen to adding gas back to beers using straws!!!

Came in here on Valentine's Day with my partner for lunch. Staff were friendly and the lady who took our order pointed out to us the lunch deal which we both decided to choose I had the seabass and my partner had a burger. Our food was very nice and we were both happy with the £10 lunch deal for food and a drink

So, so slow when it comes to service. Been multiple times and it's always painfully slow. Food is decent but honestly probably don't return now as sick of having to wait 1+ hours just to get a main.

The Chunky Steak Pie is the best around and very reasonably priced for the quality of the ingredients used.

Food: I’ve visited in past summers and loved the salads, which were fresh, tasty, and a real highlight. However, on this visit, the quality of the food has drastically declined. I tried to eat a vegan sausage sandwich, but it was completely inedible. The bread was hard and cheap-tasting, with low-quality margarine, and the “sausage” was a bizarre mash of potato, carrot, and broccoli fried together—it was awful. The coffee was inconsistent too, with some cups being fine and others disappointing. Considering the poor quality, the prices feel completely unjustified. Service: Most of the staff were lovely and welcoming, which was a positive. However, there was one staff member who was rude, making us feel uncomfortable and causing us to try to avoid her. Atmosphere: The café has a charming aesthetic, with a lovely counter full of cakes and cute knick-knacks, which initially made it feel inviting. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was frustrating. My friend and I, not having children, tried to sit in a quieter area but were told it was a no-eating zone. Strangely, children were later allowed in, spilling milkshakes everywhere. It would make far more sense to designate this space as an adult-only or quiet area given its separation from the main café. Overall, while I’ve enjoyed this café in the past, the steep decline in food quality and the inconsistencies in service and atmosphere were deeply disappointing. It’s a shame, as the café has potential, but it needs significant improvements to meet its former standard.

Food was good and orders taken relatively quickly but then a long wait for drinks. In fact, food brought out before drinks arrived. Staff stood around but seemed to be a lack of urgency with a number of them stood around chatting. Male staff members seemed efficient. Shame, as we like it here and prices are reasonable.

Lovely little cafe near Rivvy Pike, very pretty gardens in woodland setting. Went in hoping for a light lunch, but was told food had sold out due to unexpected peak in business on a lovely sunny day (food being served to other prior visitors did look tasty!). Happy to order coffee and cake which were brought outside to us. Cakes were very tasty and staff were friendly and attentive. Thought the cost of £18+ for 2 cakes, a coffee and a Coke was on the expensive side, but otherwise a nice change from the usual cafes we stop by.
