Visited with DIL and son. Very pastoral and peaceful location. Service was excellent and food choices quite varied and well prepared. In house spa we'll staffed and elegantly appointed. The rooms were as nice as the setting. Great for a luxurious getaway.

A nice hotel for a quiet weekend. The spa inside the property is very small, with only one indoor tub, a very small outdoor one and only a 3 minute sauna/steam room/saunarium. The bar service inside the spa is quite expensive and very slow, so I do not recommend it. However, we had a great time with the lobby bar for an aperitif and the hotel restaurant for dinner. The menu is a fixed 2 or 3 course menu, while breakfast has a small buffet and you can choose to order a cooked breakfast. The room was completely redone and very comfortable.

I'm still very chilled after my spa day last weekend (it's now Wednesday!). My massage and facial with Dominika was heavenly. Lovely location, staff were nice, no parking or lunch service for hotel guests due to some sort of Saturday function. Room was very big, although smelt a little damp, booked a 4 poster bed and one of the posts was broken. Mugs, plates and glasses were all dirty and bathroom wasn't cleaned properly from previous guest with left over rubbish behind the bath. However, they did allow an early checkin and late checkout and staff were really friendly. So just attention to detail required

My wife and I went to The Greenway to celebrate my 50-something Birthday. There is no need to go into what we actually ate etc. What I would like to say is the Greenway is a stunning place to go, well the Queen Mother can't be wrong can she. She used to always stay here when she came to the Cheltenham Races. The service was impeccable and the food very plesant and good value for money. I only had 2 courses and couldn't even fit a coffee in afterwards. Thank you for making the meal so special.

We had book a four day visit to The Greenway recently. Normally, we take all or most of our evening meals in the country house hotel in which we stay. Prior to our visit, I read numerous reviews of the restaurant and had concerns. For that reason we advanced booked only the first evening. That was more than enough. Its a shame to waste a nice setting with a mediocre dining experience. As others have noted, the bread was stale. My wife and I both had venison, which was accompanied by an indistinguishable venison related side dish. This just seems to be a restaurant where average meats are prepared with sauces and froo-froo. Our server was very nice and tried hard, but did not appear well trained or supervised. Sadly, we dined the next three nights elsewhere, going to Cheltenham and Painswick, where we found excellent dining.

Went for dinner as large group. No one in our group raved about the food. Although well prepared there seems to be an over-reliance on fancy cooking techniques with the sum not adding up to the individual parts. With so more emphasis on locally sources ingredients I would just let them shine rather than push to have too many unnecessary flavours on the plate. Marigolds really don't add much to a dish! Far too expensive to rate highly. Staff were generally very attentive to our table but the receptionist was rude and dismissive both when checking in and trying to pay.

A very mixed experience as we had expected a lot better. We have stayed and dined at Mallory Court and Brockencote Hall both of which were significantly better experiences than here. Canapes were excellent and amuse bouche really good, only white bread on offer as nothing else had been delivered - if so they should be baking their own! Pressed skate starter was so cold as to devoid of flavour, both mains were good but not outstanding but the sticky toffee pudding was so tough it needed a knife to cut it. Compared to Mallory Court, were we dine often, this was very disappointing. Staff were lovely and service was good but this meal was nowhere near as good as we expected.

We visited with a larger family group, including two children. Our visit started promisingly when we were told the chef would cook specially for the children, and let them pick exactly what they wanted. However, for the adults in the group, the meal itself was underwhelming. Some of the food was very good - the cod was excellent - but we found that some of the food was really not as good quality and sometimes misleadingly described on the menu; for example, the pâté with brioche turned out to have one or two tiny croutons on a large slab of pâté. The slow-cooked lamb served for main course was cold and fatty. There are no vegetables served with the main course or offered separately on the menu; this caught us out, and also the adjacent table. Four of our group opted for a Bakewell tart for dessert and found it extremely bitter and burnt around the edges; on querying this, we were told that this was intentional. To their credit, the waiting staff did not charge us for the desserts. However, other aspects of the service were very disappointing. Bread came after we'd nearly finished starters; the wine list was provided as we neared the end of our main course (meaning that at least four of us didn't have drinks at all during the meal); our water glasses were not refilled once; and at no point did anybody ask if we were satisfied or needed anything extra. Overall, this is not the level of service expected on a relatively quiet Sunday afternoon, when there were three waiting staff for just four seated tables. I am sure that they aspire to fine dining status, especially given the magnificent surroundings, but the overall experience was, sadly, very poor value.

We went for a meal recently and unfortunately the service was not up to its usual standard. The restaurant was really quite busy for a mid week dinner and there were obvious problems coping with the numbers. Our starters were brought, eaten( food was delicious) and then the empty plates were removed......and then......we waited.....and waited. At least half an hour went by. A nearby table who came in after us and had finished their main course before we had ours! The maitre'd did pop over to say ours was being plated up.....and still we waited. We were not given any reason, nor, sadly, any apology. A real disappointment. We like this place and we try and go at least a couple of times a year as it is so close. I do hope that this is a one off as the food and staff are excellent.

Stayed for 2 nights to attend a wedding, the first evening we ordered food for the 8.30 booking we made on arrival at the hotel, at 815 we went to the bar where we were the only two customers, we ordered our meal and at 9.15 I asked when we would get our food, we were then shown shortly afterwards to our table where we ordered 1 large and 1 small dry white wine, when this arrived she put one glass of wine on the table and then spilled the other 2 glasses on the tray over me and the table. At this point our food arrived so we were moved to a table that had already been used so it wasn't laid properly. The food was a tepid and the portions were very small indeed. I asked when they would bring the other glass of wine which they did it was a small one and it was the same size as my alleged large wine, i queried the sizes and the waitress said in an accusatory manner had I been drinking my wine. I hadn't and said so. they then brought a large glass of wine and took 1 small one away! The staff were not proactive at all and not friendly in the least. We did complain to the head waiter and in fairness he did waive the charge for the meal and the drinks. The wedding next day went smoothly and was very nice but the portions were still small! Baring in mind the price of a room and the prices of food it is not value for money!

we have been here twice with a half price voucher from living social. Last night we booked a table for 8pm , were shown to the lounge for a drink and to view the menus, which is a nice touch, but we didn't get to our table till 8.50 by which time I was ravenous. We had complimentary bread which had obviously been frozen, or wasn't cooked properly , the food was just ok, I had sea bass which I did find a bone in, baby leeks on the plate were tough and stringy, we ordered a separate bowl of veg which was just more tough leeks with a small amount of other veg. My desert of pecan tart reminded me of something you would buy in a party food box from Iceland. It does make me wonder whether you get half portions because you pay half price. The drinks are extremely overpriced. When the bill came ,the discretionary service charge was based on what the bill would have been if we had not had the voucher!I have eaten in Michelin star and many good a la carte restaurants and don't mind high prices if the standard is high, but this place needs to improve the standard of their food. I will end however by saying that all the staff I met were excellent ,and very knowledgeable.

Some friends rate this as one of their favourites locally and had urged us to try it, so when a Living Social offer came up. we decided to give it a go. Our voucher entitled us to the 3 course menu (normal price £49.50 per head). We were escorted into the lounge and had drinks while making our menu choices, we were then led into the dining room and dinner was served. The food was superb but the portion sizes were tiny - more around what we have received as part of a tasting menu at other similar establishments. My husband commented that it was a good job we were offered the rather delicious bread several times! Our main was venison and we could not fault it - apart from the portion size! 3 small rounds of venison, 1 game chip, 1 mushroom and a kale leaf - it looked and tasted lovely but really! Wine and drinks came to £53.00 so if we had not been on a voucher the whole evening would have cost in excess of £150 and we left feeling a bit hungry. Don't know whether we were served less as we were on a voucher but I certainly wouldn't feel happy paying the full price for what we received.

We were staying at the hotel for a couple of nights and eating there for the first night. Service in the bar was OK but not great. It fell down big style in the restaurant. They kept our wine out of sight in an ice bucket which would be fine if they kept an eye on when our glasses needed topping up, but they didn't. We insisted on having the bucket brought to the table after that.If we asked for anything, more bread, another bottle of wine, we had to ask at least twice and then it took a long time to arrive. The food was mainly good, with the exception of my husbands crispy duck egg which was underdone and had a soggy gelatinous white. I had a goats cheese and beetroot starter which was good, if rather small. We both had Brill and Ox cheek for main. The meat was well cooked, though the portions were small and the veg consisted of two tiny mushrooms and 5 shreds of kale. There was a decent cheese trolley with plenty of biscuits we could fill up on. We asked for butter and got a rock hard lump straight out of the fridge. At breakfast the next day the soggy egg theme continued. My husband's fried eggs were just about edible. My eggs benedict was a very small portion and the egg white was soggy and gelatinous. The service was OK.On the second day we both ordered scrambled eggs. We reckoned that a tendency to undercook eggs works well if you are scrambling them and our plan proved to be a good one. The service was again poor. The man who showed us to our table and brought our tea disappeared before we could order our food and we had to catch a passing waitress to do the necessary. The man then visited our table twice to enquire how we were enjoying our meal (which so far had only consisted of tea and cereal) but did not take away my dirty cereal bowl. On the third occasion, when I actually had to move the bowl out of the way for him to put my cooked breakfast down I thought he might get the message but the bowl was left. I am not precious enough to demand that dirty crockery be removed unless the table is totally overcrowded, but I don't like sitting there staring at it.We would stay at the hotel again but certainly would not dine there.

I stood with the rest of my party in the middle of the restaurant, and although there was staff from the spa in the vicinity, nobody offered to show us to a table or even ask us why we were there. A more senior person served the food, but could not get out of the room quick enough when I complained about the time that the food was taking to arrive. The food itself was first class and good value but I would not return unless I heard they had increased the numbers of staff and trained them better.

I booked a Masterclass for partner and myself at the restaurant with the head chef followed by lunch. Neither of us were sure what to expect, to be honest I was a little dubious about the idea - how wrong was I?! What a wonderful experience. The Head Chef Robin Dudley couldn't have been nicer and we had a fabulous time creating dishes we just would never have attempted at home (we will now though!). It was such a great time we have already looked up the next class ready to book our babysitters and book ourselves in.Following the class we had a delicious lunch in the beautiful fine dining restaurant and then coffee and petit fours in the gardens - helped by the fact it was a glorious sunny day.I booked it as a birthday surprise for my partner who is fascinated with cookery/cookery programmes. It's getting harder and harder to find interesting things to book as surprises but I can honestly say this was one of the best 'things to do' for adults/couples we've found. Also extremely good value.I've mentioned Robin by name as we spent most of the time with him but I also want to say every single one of the staff were lovely, professional and friendly - they have been everytime I have visited here.

In the very well presented conservatory restaurant, the freshly cooked food did not disappoint and, although quite small portions, three courses for lunch was more than enough. Excellent coffee and petit fours followed. Friendly staff, good food and beautiful surroundings. We will not leave it so long until our next visit.

My mum and i had afternoon tea last Sunday. It was a birthday treat for her. We were asked to take a seat in the lounge on arrival, there was just one small table available right on the entrance so we took a seat expecting to be seated somewhere else to eat. We ended up staying there even after requesting to move somewhere more suitable. but unfortunately this wasn't possible. Service was very slow, couldn't find any staff at one point to ask for more tea. The sandwiches were ok but very average, Scones- were ok but on dry side, choc eclair was nice, but what was supposed to be lemon drizzle cake was not what id expect as a homemade drizzle cake. it was dense and i would say a cake that had gone wrong.. we didn't even try the fruit cake... To be honest it was embarrassing as this was meant to be a treat. Certainly would not recommend for a special occasion and not worth the money

My friends and I had afternoon tea in the hotel today. At £20 per head I expected better. The service was slow and we were brought a full afternoon tea despite the fact we hadn't been asked what we wanted. The sandwiches and scones were ok but the cream eclairs were heavy and doughy. Admittedly I didn't try any of the other cakes but none looked that appetising and after being disappointed with the coffe and eclair I felt the rest of the cakes wouldn't be worth the calories! All in all not a good experience. Slow service, poor food and even worse poor coffee! I've had far better for far less money.

We haven't been to the Greenway for 2 years, having left it too late to get in for Valentine's Day in 2010. In the meantime, there's new management and a new chef. The hotel is much the same in appearance, with attentive service and the sitting room and dining room elegantly understated. Greeting on arrival is correct and drinks service prompt - my wife's Kir Royale hit the spot and the barman was able to put together my tonic and angostura bitters without any difficulty. The limited choice set menu was familiar and welcome, with most dietary requirements accommodated. My wife chose the foie gras bob-bon for a starter followed by salmon, my daughter the salmon roulade with avocado puree and crab mousse and pan fried sea-bass with smoked eel. I also had the salmon roulade but went for the pork belly for a main. A plate of fresh and varied cocktail roles was presented with a pat of butter - both good quality and perfect size and portion - pity about the badly chipped plate. And that's when we noticed the difference. The flavours in the starters and equally understated but delicious mains was breath-taking. Typically, we find that most set menus do good starters but rather mundane mains. There is a very talented and competent chef at work at the Greenway, who knows how to combine ingredients to tease and tantalize in the most provocative way. Well done. My wife stuck to bubbly and had a glass of Bollinger with lunch while I went for a very impressive South African chenin blanc. We couldn't manage pudding, but my daughter had the passion fruit cheesecake which she thoroughly enjoyed. We finished with coffee and friandise, which were good. The table has definitely moved up a notch or two - what a wonderful surprise. We've always liked the Greenway, but its back at the top of our list for Cheltenham.

We were invited by family visiting from the US for dinner... hmm lovely idea a posh Hotel with restaurant.A three course menu costing nearly £50 per person. We forgot to take our magnifying glasses - portions are minuscule. I had scallops for starters, two tiny scallops the size of ten pence pieces topped with a smidge of tomato - two mouthfuls of nothing special. My husband had celeriac soup and was presented with a tiny bowl with shreds of celeriac in the bottom, then a small jug of soup was poured on top. This was luke warm and again finished in two spoonfuls.Main course - I had lemon sole - this was a small portion of OK fish served with a few strands of samphire and three tiny new potatoes. My husband had loin of lamb - two small brown lumps served with some slivers of courgette and some sauce, and some unidentified green ball - he didn't bother to find out what it was.Pudding - I ordered Summer pudding. what came bore no resemblance whatsoever to Summer pudding as you and I know it. A small glass filled with dark red jelly and a few fruits, two slivers of biscuit and a small scoop of ice cream. My husband sensibly ordered cheese, which came in a reasonable portion.A disappointing experience - the only decent thing about the whole evening was the wine and company.

We went for sunday lunch as an anniversary treat. I can honestly say that the food was done to perfection. I had red pepper espume, beef and chocolate tart, my partner duck, pork and the sorbet. We couldn't fault it. However the service once in the dining room was minimal, When the main course came out the waitress put the wong dish infront of each of us when we said that it should be the other way round she swapped them, didn't ask if we wanted anything else and dashed off, leving us in the dining room alone, then we had to wait 4 mins before another waiter appeared and asked if we wanted anything, i asked for some wine and he was off agiain before my partner could request anything. We would recommend this restaurant if only for the food, but go prepared to miss on the service that should go with a beautiful venue like this.

I went to the hotel not staying but for afternoon tea to celebrate a birthday. The experience was the worst that I have ever had.The staff were hostile and not even a little welcoming. No conversation was offered and when asking if we would be the only people taking tea we were assured other guests would be doing the same. This was clearly a lie and after being shown to the large drawing room we were served our tea we were the only people there. The scones were delicious but the jam and cream were nothing special and we were given one strawberry between us.At no time was there any conversation with the waiter to make us feel even a little bit welcome. It was as though it was just a big chore. In fact we waited for the bill for so long that we left the money on the table and left. Not even a goodbye from reception.I did email the hotel to express my disappointment but even then not even the courtesy of a reply. So many other hotels in the area that I think it is wise to give this one a big miss.
