Great pub good atmosphere as well

I have been coming here on-off for the last 10 years and up until yesterday I have only ever had an amazing experience - from the atmosphere to the food. However, it’s clear that since it’s been taken over the pub has gone down hill. Their vegan roasts used to be one of the best in east London, and now they don’t even have one as an option! Even the vegetarian option was an aubergine bake…so not even a proper roast! Absolutely bizarre for a pub to go backwards on this - we ended up having the only option available, a burger and chips, which I can only rate poorly; bland, dry and drenched in mustard, accompanied by pale cold chips. No matter which day of the week you’d go to this pub, it would be heaving, and yesterday it was dead, on a Sunday afternoon. So sad! They also used to have live jazz in the evening but that has stopped too. Not sure why anyone would buy a clearly successful pub and change all the good bits about it, I can only imagine it’ll continue to decline! Such a shame because it really was a fabulous pub with amazing atmosphere

Just held our Anniversary at the Red Lion, what a fantastic place to hold any event. Relatives and friends were amazed at the wonderful décor and atmosphere. Everyone had a brilliant time and our thanks to the staff who were so accommodating, especially Angela and Kevin who couldn't have done more for us. The rooms were fantastic, as was the buffet. This is the perfect venue to hold an event. We all love this pub, Our special thanks to everyone involved in making it such a memorable evening.

By the end of their ‘sessions’, one can almost imagine the kids being decanted from the pushchair only to be replaced by one of the quaffing parents, the other one being tasked with pushing them home. During the week, at least some order appears, but there is a very small group (3-5) of rather basic, judgemental men (as usual!) standing at the far right (appropriately enough) of the bar and making disparaging comments about customers, without being challenged by either staff or management. The staff are relatively welcoming, long-suffering and efficient, though the strong support of management is needed to challenge this very small group of ‘regulars’ standing confidently and seemingly with impunity, at the bar. I have never attended a live music event, but I hear that they are good. Food prices seem a bit pricey to me. Drinks are, of course, much more expensive than Wetherspoon’s, but then again, it’s a choice between a nice, calm, pleasant venue (i.e., here) or one that resembles, at times, a night shelter. There are no mirrors in the Gents- just as well considering the state of the men I’ve seen here.

The most well located, cosiest, most welcoming place I’ve ever stayed at. I wish I could live here, that’s how good it felt staying here. Completely like home. If you enjoy having bubble baths be sure to request the “Charles” room. Dogs welcome and amazing forests and woodlands 5 minutes walk. For breakfast check out the San Marino Coffee. Enjoy your stay!

Trusted meeting place whenever I go to Leytonstone.

Nice pub. They had Lucky Saint on tap which is always a plus.

Avoid for any major football matches. I’ve been to the Red Lion for the England World Cup semi-final in 2018, the Euro 2021 Final, and many other big England games and it's been brilliant. However last night for the Euro 2024 Final they really rubbed salt into the wound and it was the worst experience I have seen for a major sporting event. It was comical how unprepared they were. There were no seats for people who had booked in the ballroom, asking paying customers to carry chairs upstairs, then totally running out of chairs and making people stand for the full game. There was nowhere near enough staff for the main bar, queues of 40 mins upwards before the game, and no staff at all to open the ballroom bar which remained closed for those who had booked to be there. Also no real sound in the ballroom for the match. It was like they didn't know the final was happening, which is a shame as they have put on great events in previous tournaments but it was a total shambles last night. Overall awful service from a once great pub.

Stayed at the hotel and had diner in the pub. Both were really nice experiences. Rooms are beautifully decorated and are up to date. Pub is old and has beautifull charactere, fun live music and even a festival when we where there. Food was great and fresh. We had a room at the top floor, at the back of the building, we did not hear any noise of the party (was untill 2 am). Neighboorhd is also really nice and good underground connection to the whole of Londen due to the 'Central line'. Only remark is that the room gets hot really easily and the shower had a bit of damage due to knob easily faling down (could be easily fixed with a screw, but seemed to be neglected)

Appalling service. Waited for a portion of chips for 40 minutes, asked waiter (brunette lady, red lipstick) about the delay, to which she said ‘just wait & be patient’ & walked away as I was mid sentence. Made me feel embarrassed for even asking. No apology whatsoever.

Three old codgers came to the Red Lion expecting a hearty meal. Tuesday. Kitchen closed despite what the web site said. Forced to eat Pizza from Yard Sale. Tasty but NOT why we came. Might want to make a note on the web site? Very misleading.

Really lovely pub on Leytonstone high street. Very cool distressed interior and it feels cosy and welcoming. The Sunday roast was excellent and the atmosphere was lovely. Highly recommended.

It was a lovely evening and a great vibe up until the barmaid lost her temper. I was a little hoarse and couldn't hear well over the music but essentially the 3rd drink was very clearly not a brandy and coke. When I explained and wrote on my phone it was a brandy and coke I asked for she became disproportionately angry. I hoped to salvage the situation by asking what the 3rd drink was so that maybe we could have taken it and added a 4th drink to the bill but she wouldn't tell me what it was and kept making out I was trying to gaslight her and avoid paying for drinks. It was extremely confusing, unexpected, aggressive and unnecessary. Finally I spoke to the manager who she called over to 'deal with me' and he just got us the 3rd drink we'd asked for and we paid the bill. It definitely ruined an otherwise great evening and we left as soon as the drinks were finished

Cracking pub 🍻 in heart of Leytonstone. Huge ceilings and great staff and beer

Booked a table for Mother’s Day, got there - it was heaving. Our table hadn’t been reserved, we were left waiting at the bar for 20 minutes, I’m 8 months pregnant and we have a toddler so this wasn’t ideal. Finally got sat at a dirty table I had to ask for, went to order food and got told they’d stopped taking orders. Another customer basically told us to leave while we could, so we did. This is peak afternoon, they were just too busy. Terrible. These things happen but the staff didn’t even care about the situation or apologise.

Really nice pub visit, had been meaning to go there for a while, but didn't get the chance! Upon entering found it to be very spacious and welcoming. They had a band on when we went which was fun, and we found it was friendly towards kids. The staff were also really nice, friendly and welcoming (which sometimes is quite rare!) The food (starters and mains) were tasty, better then most of the pubs we've been to recently! The only thing that let it down were the desserts, they didn't taste great at all, a bit of a strange flavour to them but all in all we'd definitely go to the pub again and more often too!

Spectacular roast. Been a while since we had a decent Sunday roast in a pub but we couldn't fault this. Beef was edge to edge pink but fat was rendered. Potatoes were fluffy/crispy and the variety of veg was great (sweet carrots, buttery leeks and sharp cabbage). Cauliflower cheese side was also the perfect consistency and well seasoned. House wine was a great value Romanian red. Really wasn't expecting much but will 100% be back for the food, clearly they've focused on quality here. Have paid a lot more in supposed gastropubs and been disappointed. Selection of beers and vibe was also great, but this was expected.

I think this is probably the most Normal boozer on the high street. I wish the outdoor area had less sand. Seldom see families with small children in here which is definitely a plus for me. the prices are so-so, despite being in zone 4 they're keeping us grounded and reminding us leytonstone is still a part of london with them. There are cheaper pints about but it's got a cosier atmosphere than wetherspoons and it's not overpopulated with IPAs. I've never tried the food but judging by how overrun it seems to be with OAP's on sundays i imagine getting a table requires some pre-planning.

Beautiful old pub with very tall ceiling, lots of different seating options. Small food menu but very tasty, we had the burgers and they were lovely.

We booked here as we have family living nearby and they highly recommended this hotel. Unfortunately the day before we are were due to arrive, my partner fell ill with covid. As it was so late, I fully expected the best case scenario to be offered a date change and worst case, having to pay the full room rate for the missed night. I phoned the hotel and the gentleman who answered could not have been more helpful or polite. He immediately cancelled the booking, said he would waive the fee and wished my partner a speedy recovery. We will definitely be staying and using the restaurant here in the future. Top notch customer. Service and given by a small company that could easily have been justified in not refunding given the short notice. Thank you!

Nice pub. Live music when we visited Sunday afternoon. Very good roast dinner. Great selection of vegetables. Generous adults and kids portions. Friendly staff.

Lovely room (Jane suite). The staff were really friendly and accommodating. Good atmosphere in the pub. Lovely cosy bed!

Consistently the worst smelling toilets in the borough. Only leaving this review in the hope they sort it out. It's been this way for years.

Another fantastic night in a East and pub that I have gone to every time I've been in Leytonstone I love it !

We had been to the 'Luna Lounge'' but not enjoyed it, as we needed to catch up and it was too loud. We moved on to the 'Red Lion'. I loved the comfy sofas and the atmosphere was chilled but with a good vibe. It was a Saturday and sport was happening on a TV screen somewhere.

One of the better pubs the Leyton/Leytonstone area. Only been for Sunday Lunch but atmosphere was comfortable and relaxed. Could have spent all day there. Had Beef roast, good meat (and generous) also the red cabbage was great. Spuds could have been more crisp and gravy could of had more power. Also had double cheese burger, cauliflower harrissa hummus, leek/cauliflower bake, pardon peppers, sausage roll. Sausage roll was the highlight. Everything else was good pub food but to take it to the next level could have done with everything being amped up a bit on the flavour. Very good prices on wine and local ales.

Decent pub with a range of beers and plenty of seating. I wish I had this kind of pub near me.

The place looks very old and dull from outside but the moment you enter you can feel a country side pub vibe and the staff are very friendly. Also there are games at late hours to engage the public and above all lovely live music.

I love this place. Always a good night out. DJs are usually very good.

Music too loud wrong sound system

I’ve lived in Leytonstone for ten years, and the Red Lion used to be an exciting, comforting and progressive feeling pub. Sadly as many noted it’s not only the food that’s declined but the service and general feeling of being welcomed. After trying it again today, it still hasn’t got any better, and as many others will attest your find a much more pleasant experience in one of the neighbouring pubs. Not wanting this pub to fail, I really do hope you get your spark back and become the welcoming Leytonstone local you once were.

Was suppose to be staying here for a weekend in July for one night, booked a couple of months ago on booking.com however got a message to say they are renovating the rooms and they have to cancel our booking with less than two weeks notice. Unfair and poor communication still not had a reply back and no more information given regarding payment very poor service! Now have had to rebook another hotel for triple the price due to it being last minute :(

When voicing a concern regarding creepy and unsafe behaviour from a fellow patron in front of and towards other members of the public, particularly vulnerable women, rather than removing the offending, potentially dangerous individual, the pub security just told us to move tables if we were uncomfortable. This is disgusting. You shouldn’t be waiting until assault has happened to remove the perpetrator. If the comfort of a perverted regular is More important than the safety of women, you should be shut down.

We came back to Red Lion to visit our daughter who lives around the corner. It's a great spot right in the main part of Leytonstone. The room is clean and comfortable, perhaps a little dark but warm and cosy. Would recommend.

Not a child friendly pub. The website advertises a full children's menu but it doesn’t actually have one. We brought my two year old there for his birthday and there was no kids food nor would the supervisor ask the kitchen to make anything child size or friendly. The very limited menu only had fried food on it and it was not very nice at all. I was genuinely surprised at how unhelpful the supervisor was - blaming management for not changing the website but did nothing to accommodate for the children. Bar staff are nice but other than that no reason to go back given the bad service, greasy food and long wait for everything, including a plate of oily hummus.

Best vegan roast we’ve found so far: sweet potato nut roast, amazing roasties, kale and beens. This week there was also vegan cheese as a side - please keep that up @TheRedLion! More generally - a lovely cosy pub with plenty of beers and always does good food.

Popped in for a drink and was impressed by the level of covid19 rules being followed. Meaning I was happy to stay for a drink. Masks worn by staff, hand sanitiser at the door for when you enter, table service only, contactless, floor marking for social distancing. Sat in the garden and it was pleasent.

Better than the other whetherspoons I have visited. The pub is quiet and the staff are professional, I had the ribs and chips which were nice and had nice flavouring. The casino games kept me and my sister entertained while we waited on our food and the drink selection is good.

What the bouncers did to me and my girlfriend was so terrible. Lovely pub but they need to change the bouncers. They are provocative and clearly not there to protect and diffuse situations. Instead start fights and bully normal customers doing nothing wrong Concerned to see the same bouncers still working there after a formal complaint made to the management Disgusting

This pub has to be one of the best in the area! Very trendy and modern, staff are friendly and it happens to have one of the best beer gardens around. Prices can be a little steep but the food quality is awesome. Over the weekends they also have a dj playing so you can have a little boogie

Visited this pub for the first time last week for the quiz,which had been recommended to us. For this area of London,the pub was quite trendy,which normally goes hand in hand with high prices,but we thought prices to be reasonable,answering those that ate enjoyed the food. The big surprise was that the quizmaster was Big Keith from the Office.He did a great job! Oh,and we won the quiz so it is fair to say we were happy bunnies all round,and will definitely be returning.

Ozzie was amazing! So patient and attentive. I had the red lion beef burger which was fabulous. And the drinks are good priced. Love my evening here and will be returning soon. Someone ask if ozzie has a girlfriend please?

Ayer, mi familia y yo fuimos al Red Lion para una cena asada. Todas las mesas a nuestro alrededor se sentaron mucho más tarde, pero recibieron sus asados antes que los nuestros. Todas las camareras que visitaron nuestra mesa fueron educadas y serviciales, pero cuando finalmente pedimos ver al gerente, tuvimos una experiencia completamente diferente. Really enjoyed our one night at the Red Lion. Very comfortable and elegant room. Well equipped and beautifully prepared. It’s a long climb up to the top floor but worth it for the view (Room: Victoria). Basic reception facilities but a really helpful reception lady quickly appeared when called by the bar, and showed us to the room.

Came in for a drink with family my brother went to the bar with my Mum and she tried to pay but my brother insisted she put her purse away.

Super friendly staff team great advice on slow gin with bitter lemon. Awesome chocolate and salted Carmel brownie with ice cream. I’ve never been served so well by staff in bar!

Perfect place for lunch, dinner or just some pints. I was there with a few local friends and it was perfect. Service was good, beers were unique (for us foreigners anyway), outdoor area was elite, inside was great and spacious! Recommend the traditional fish and chips here along with a pint.

The service was lovely, nice bright area and a great menu with good choice for all. Would recommend the cheese and cauliflower croquettes.

Went here on a sunny Saturday afternoon with the family and the pub is gorgeous, there was a lovely atmosphere coupled with a pretty good drink selection. Our waitress was accommodating and starters like the crab pate and mussels were a big hit. For mains I had wonderfully cooked salmon with a potato cake and horerasish and beetroot which was delicious, others with me had clasdics like fish and chips and a ham hock pie. The orange posset with rosemary biscuit was gorgeous too.. Will be back!!

Comida perfecta Servicio atroz de una camarera amistosa pero muy olvidadiza (camarera 1). Llegué al restaurante a tiempo para mi mesa reservada: la camarera 1 saludó y echó un vistazo al plan de asientos y me dijo dos minutos. Después de diez minutos me di vuelta y ella estaba sirviendo a otros clientes. Entonces le pregunté a otra camarera y ella dijo que lo sentía y me senté a mi amiga ya mí misma. Esperó 30 minutos y ni una palabra de un miembro del personal. Me acerqué a la camarera 1, se disculpó y diez minutos después vino y tomó mi pedido. Ella se olvidó de servir nuestras bebidas. . . Así que me acerqué a otra camarera que rápidamente nos los trajo. La comida salió de inmediato.

I've had a fair amount of bad experiences with the food at the Red Lion in the past two years, with a lot of the food served being mind-bogglingly bad (i.e some advice - avoid the fish and chips unless you want to try London's worst pub fish and chips) but due to its prominence in Leytonstone, every few months I go back to try again and try to write the past off as a random bad experience.

We've been loyal customers of the Red Lion for many years, enjoying Sunday lunches, live music, good beer and the garden in the summer. We booked last week for lunch yesterday for 10 people at 12.30pm, adding an extra person by phone on Monday. When we arrived, there was no record of our booking and Carl, the manager, had to ask a couple at a table to move so that he could put two tables together. We were chatting and didn't order food for a while, but nobody came to our table to take a drinks order- we went to the bar ourselves. We were given menus and not told of any unavailability. 5 of us decided we'd like fish and chips, but when Carl took the order, he said there were only 2 portions left. By the time we'd made alternative choices, there was only one portion. He said that it wasn't his fault- the chef had failed to tell him the fish delivery hadn't come! We were astounded, but ordered other items, which took an age to arrive. I tried to make light of the situation but Carl continued to be defensive and almost downright hostile. Some friends reported that the food was ok, but most found the portions stingy and overcooked. My salad was mostly raw cabbage, but by this time I'd lost the will to live. One friend reported that he's never seen such disgusting toilets. When told, we found Carl again defensive- nothing seemed to be his responsibility. We requested a reduction to our bill, which was granted, but we went home disappointed and our festive spirit had been dampened. it didn't help that many of us were still hungry.

This pub is clearly cashing in on the fashionable uplift of the area, no real problem with that. However both drinks and food are expensive for what they are. They serve some good beer, but it is significantly dearer than other pubs nearby. I have been here twice in the last week, on both occasions the service at the bar has been slow to the point of comedy, there are plenty of staff, however they appear to be doing everything but serving drinks. On both occasions customers at the bar have ended up joking about dying of thirst , whilst staff stood talking in the kitchen, waited on tables and made up drinks trays for tables etc. The food is poor for the price, small portions and a triumph of style over content. There was a lot of red chilli added to a vegetable , that was not specified on the menu. To be fair to the pub, I was provided with a replacement when I spoke to them about this, so perhaps I am being a bit harsh about that. However, in my view it is poor value. The staff need to be better organised.

Visiting London and staying nearby. Came in around 7pm, had a really good meal - I had burger, very nice while others had fish and chips; fish was nice and lightly battered, really good food for only around £10-12.

The food is very indifferent as is the service. If you still serve roast Sunday lunch at 5pm then please make an effort. It was luke warm, arrived within 5 minutes of the order and the service was disinterested. What a shame. It has been an asset living nearby but competition is increasing locally. Time for a shake up.

Went in for an evening meal, lucky enough to find a table. Nice place with lovely atmosphere. We all had fish and chips and 3 were covered in too much salt, one couldnt be eaten because that's all you could taste. Disappointing as it looked and felt so welcoming.

Habíamos hablado con Carl, que era el Gerente de Red Lion, y él estuvo de acuerdo en dejarnos despertar a nuestros Padres en el salón de baile de The Red Lion. Queríamos un lugar y una fiesta para darle a mi papá una buena despedida y fue una noche fantástica. Carl y su equipo hicieron todo lo posible para hacer lo que pudieran para ayudar con el evento. Fueron útiles y realmente nos ayudaron a hacer que la noche fuera lo mejor posible. También manejaron nuestro buffet y fue absolutamente encantador. Especialmente los rollos de salchicha vegetariana. Almuerzo ordenados y cuando llego nos estalló riendo! ! La segunda cosa que hice fue pedir nuestro dinero. Sinceramente deseo que había tomado una foto. Este fue destinado a ser un Plowman's. We all had the fish and chips as usual but it was so disappointing. Very thick batter so the inside was not cooked. Neither was fish cooked due to the thickness. We had to leave much of what is usually an excellent meal here.

Además justo antes estábamos listos para salir, nos dimos cuenta de que uno de los vasos de agua que tenía labios. Inaceptable. El servicio era amable y eficiente.

Encuentre aquí con un amigo para bebidas y algo de comida una tarde. Me sorprendió la transformación de este lugar, que ha pasado por algunas manos chungas y recuerdo cuando era la horrible etcetera, ahora es la original es Red Lion, un encantador lugar muy acogedor y relajante, con mesas, bancas y asientos cómodos para beber o comer. Hacen una selección de cervezas que se pueden probar antes de comprar, y el servicio fue muy bueno, desde el personal de bar. Comimos allí y la comida era deliciosa, así que tome un bocado cuando su. Es familiar con parejas en su haber con algunos cafés y comida a los niños que estaban muy bien educados. Si su Pop calificación incluso con la familia como quedará gratamente sorprendido, sobre la hora de calificación tenía algunos buenos lugares para beber como este.

Majorly busy friday night, problems getting served?? NO WAY.. The bar staff are massively on the ball. Good beers good friendly service. I really reccomend this pub its superb..

We came here as our niece recently moved to the area and had lunch and drinks.

Definitely the classier local pub for us, we semi-regularly attend the Monday Pub Quiz, but rarely eat here due to high prices. Can't justify a fiver for popcorn chicken with KFC next door!

The Haddock was even better than Harry Ramsden ! Chips were delicious and crispy. Good size portions. Friendly staff. Do give this pub a try. It is so worth it!

Estado aquí un par de veces para tomar una copa y quería probar la comida como el menú parecía genial. Realmente decepcionado y verdadera decepción por la calidad de los alimentos. Apenas pasada, patatas fritas caseras, por debajo de la media hamburguesa, opción la fritura de maíz vegetariano brunch muy pobre. Precioso lugar espacioso y buen ambiente. En el aspecto de gestión de esperanza como algo de comida decente podría hacer que este lugar fantástico.

Sitio personal increíble, agradable, pero la seguridad es realmente desagradable. Así que parece que el pub como es la política propia en lo que concernía sólo en personas por encima de 21 años, pero me dejaron entrar con mi 19 años viejo amigo. Cuando mi hermano venga despues ya no dejes que él porque él parecía joven y él es 18 años! Me dijo que si no tenía pelo rapada tal es aspecto mayores suficiente para entrar! Vino el gerente y no dejes que en sabiendo que todos nosotros ya estaban dentro de beber con un amigo de 19 años así! Así que simplemente aplique su "propio" con personas que les gusta! No son justos!

Estoy aquí ahora que regular viven cerca. El servicio siempre es muy bueno. Sonriente y amable personal y siempre servicial. La comida está bien

Me encanta estar aquí, fantástico pequeño pub/restaurante jardín encantador. El personal puede ser un poco grosero que a veces, pero es inconsistente. La bebida siempre son buenos.
