Rasputin in Breckland

Haven't been to rasputins for a while not for any reason other than being busy. Didn't realise how lovely the food was here along with the friendly efficient service. They have also updated the menu... and have to say really loved the new addition of chicken schnitzel. So definitely worth a visit if your in swaffham and fancy something different. We won't leave it so long next time before returning.

Well that was a surprise! We're local, and I've been eying up Rasputin every Saturday when we go walking around the market and shops. I've been waiting for the right time and today was the day! It has a bit of an unobtrusive doorway under the Plowright arch that looks like it's a secret lair and if you pop your head in the door you'll see an imposing wide, creaky and obviously very well travelled staircase leading up to the restaurant. It all looks a little bit like you might be intruding on someone's residence. Fear not! For the staircase leads to the restaurant. Obviously. It's a nice size, no more than 22 covers, with seating from 2 to party's. The menu, thankfully isn't huge, the chef after all, is a lovely Estonian lady who does ALL of the cooking for the restaurant. It was easy to sort a starter of borscht and a main of beef goulash - when in Rome (or Tallinn), but there were a good few other options to choose from - we asked for recommendations from the waiter and the wife ordered the mushroom blini and pork mains. We figured from the menu the wait would be 30-45 minutes so we ordered a sharing platter of nibbles and a paddle of 6 randomly selected vodkas for the duration. The food is all home cooked goodness although the combinations were odd to our taste they worked very well! The nibbles were very nice, particularly the homemade pork paté. 3 vodkas gone by the starters. The blini was like pancake stuffed with mushrooms and sour cream and was very yummy apparently, and the borscht was a wholesome beetroot and onion soup (no red cabbage though, apparently it doesn't always agree with the clientelle). 5 of the 6 vodkas gone. The goulash was delicious - the meat was very tender and the veg cooked just right, all in a delicious gravy and incredibly filling. There wouldn't be room for desert :( The wife's pork dish was equally filling, with sauerkraut, broccoli and mash with a coated pork steak topped with cheese and mushrooms. Very tasty, very filling. All on all a lovely experience. The service was great, very attentive but not overly so and very informative, and the food was delicious hone cooked fayre. If you've been thinking about it give it a try. If you've never heard of it, give it a try. If it's not your thing, but you like good homecooked food, give it a try!

I didn't know this place was here, only in Swaffham area 2-3 times a year, found it tonight, it'll now be my go to place to eat in Swaffham. My Pork so succulent, veg cooked to perfection, go on, treat yourself to a great meal. I couldn't believe food this good was so affordable. Can't wait to cone back to Rasputins.

We just went to Rasputin tonight and we absolutely loved it. Staying in Swaffham for a few nights. We were Recommend by the locals to this restaurant. We ordered mixed Bellinis to start which were gorgeous and the goulash and schnitzel, which were huge portions and absolutely lovely. The meat was so tender and the flavours were great.. we have eaten in lots of the local pubs here and it was a really nice different meal to try. The host is super friendly and welcoming really can’t the restaurant loved it. Thanks Rasputin for a really nice night x

A different dining place and experience when visiting Swaffam. We enjoyed our meal from a menu that offers a good choice of options all freshly made to order. And all at a reasonable price Our waiter was polite, friendly and efficient. Can think of no reason not to recommend or return.

Rasputins is a welcome surprise on a wet Tuesday in Swaffham. With a good selection of dishes, prepared to order, and some excellent Georgian wines, we enjoyed a very good meal. The smoked salmon blinis with sour cream, pickled beetroot and rocket to start were an absolute treat. We’ll be back!

Our second visit to Rasputin whilst visiting Swaffham again, and we were not disappointed! Lovely, tasty food, attentive waiting staff and very good value. We will not hesitate to book a table again when visiting Norfolk. Thank you!

Really good beef goulash. The lamb was good, but I couldn't taste the rosemary or mint that was in the menu description. Very nice and helpful owner. Upstairs in historic building... nice ambience.

Absolutely amazing from start to finish, starter of homemade and rye bread so good asked to take what I had left. Meal was beautiful I had the lamb hubby had the beef stew, exceptional flavours. We weren't rushed able to really enjoy both courses.

Last ate here about eight years ago and we all had a fantastic evening back then and we had a fantastic evening last night. We all had something different to eat and everything was delicious. The service was so welcoming especially from Irina and we had a lot of fun with the paddle of different flavoured vodkas, as did the other diners! Thank you and will not leave it quite so long before we return!

Came on Saturday with a group of friends for our Scout Christmas meal. Never been before and I have no idea why because WOW! What a gem of a place. The food was outstanding and service was brilliant. So warm and welcoming. Don’t expect to eat and run here as everything is cooked fresh to order. It was so nice to sit and relax and not have each course shovelled down us! Really really good. We shall be returning

Have never been to a Russian restaurant before and saw Rasputin had good, reviews on Tripadvisor when visiting family in Swaffham so, we booked a table. Brilliant!! Lovely, tasty and delicious food from the nibbles to start us off, right through to our desserts, and all at a very reasonable price! We will definitely visit again when in Swaffham. We had dinner at Rasputin on the back of the reviews here. The reviews do not oversell the place! The cooking is wonderful, and we had a most excellent meal. We shared the three-dish 'nibble' - so flavoursome with the tastiest rye bread. For mains, R chose the ravioli and S the Rasputin pork. Both were delicious. This is homestyle cooking rather than fine dining and we wouldn't have it any other way! We both chose the layered Russian torte for dessert. Both were delicious, but the honey version won by a nose. R heard of kvass for the first time and drank two glasses - think very malty beer, but non-alcoholic. S, who wasn't driving, fell in love with the walnut vodka. Seriously, you taste this, you wonder why they bother carrying the other flavours. This is what vodka tastes like in Heaven. If you're near Swaffham, eat here. If you're not near Swaffham, head towards Swaffham...

Having never been out in Swaffham before, we had asked friends for a dinner recommendation. 'Rasputin's Russian restaurant is supposed to be good' we were told, and so we thought we'd check it out. The entrance way up a dated and tatty staircase didn't fill us with confidence, but we persevered and were glad we did. The restaurant itself is in one high-ceilinged space, decorated with an eclectic collection of Russian pictures and objects. Upbeat Russian instrumental music from a stereo added to the atmosphere. Tables were neatly laid, and we were able to choose one next to the large windows overlooking the market place. We immediately felt welcome and were put at ease by the lovely hostess. Menu choices were varied, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Description of the dishes on the menu helped us to navigate Russian specialities. The food was delicious, service was efficient but not rushed, and the beer was good too. At the end of our meal, we were invited to move to some comfortable arm chairs to finish our drinks, a nice touch. Overall, the food was delicious and I would love to return to sample more from the menu (especially the vodkas!). It is a comfortable and welcoming restaurant, albeit a little tatty round the edges. Highly recommend!

What a find! We were looking for a local restaurant to celebrate my Husbands birthday. Rasputin came up in a Google search and after browsing the menu we decided to give it a try. I’m so glad we did! Keen travellers with a love for authentic food we were amazed! The food was lovely, tasty and authentic. The service was efficient & the staff friendly. We are so glad we found this restaurant & will be back soon to sample more!

Our son's birthday was the reason for the booking. We've only moved to the area recently and noticed Rasputins whilst out shopping. Sounded interesting so we booked.Great experience. Food excellent, service great and quirky atmosphere which we loved. Will certainly recommend. Everything freshly cooked from scratch so don't expect to be back home in an hour. I rarely get the opportunity to try food that is truly authentic as travelling has always been difficult. Part of the excitement was the fact this is a family run business so as close as you can get to eating in Russia without actually being there. My family had booked it as a treat for me and all of us came away happy, especially myself thanks to a lovely birthday vodka! Delicious food and a warm welcome. We kicked off with a paddle of vodkas (the walnut is really excellent) to whet the appetite, followed by starters of borscht and salmon blinis, then fantastic mains of duck stroganoff and mushroom & Stilton risotto. It was all delicious, as were the puddings of Pavlov and multilayered chocolate torte. Irina our hostess was lovely and chatty. The Russian ambience is great, especially the music! In short, we had a really great evening here.

We just called in and hoped for a table. Which we got. I had Peter the Great Lamb and my wife had Rasputin Pork. Followed by Russian honey cake tort. All very nice a totally unexpected pleasure. Never had food like it. Well done.

Just had the most amazing meal at Raputin. Brilliant service, perfectly cooked tastiest food ever. Menu makes you want to come back for more. Meringue for dessert the lightest I have ever tasted. On holiday here but would drive the 2 hours from home to eat here again!

Russian restaurant in the market place of the attractive Norfolk market town of Swaffham. An interesting and tasty take on British ingredients. The food was delicious but more than that the service was great, especially the intelligent and engaging cook/waitress/owner who seemed to do it all herself. I'd recommend this restaurant if you fancy a meal with a difference with vodka and a conversation about the cold war! Very good.

An excellent restaurant in typical Russian style. The service was pleasant and food high quality, provided to us courteously and efficiently by Irina and Chloe.

So good we had to go back twice! The nibbles are a great way to start off the meal and are a great assortment of foods to pick on while you wait for your starters. For a starter I recommend the smoked salmon pancakes, or the goats cheese on bread. Both are delicious. For the main I definitely recommend the pelmeni which are little pasta filled with meat. After that is dessert. I suggest the pancakes or the strawberry pavlova for dessert as it is a sweet and delicious way to finish the meal. The service of the restaurant is friendly and kind. The restaurant is amazing and is a great place to eat. (Written by my 12yr old son - very family friendly, great food)

We booked the day before for dinner on Friday evening. On climbing the stairs we were welcomed by Irina, who led us to the sofa for drinks while choosing the menu. The ceiling had a raised area with a map of the world, and the walls were red with different paintings. We chose the Nibbles to start which were salmon on pancake, egg mayonnaise on pancake, pate on brown bread, olives, gherkin and nuts. This was accompanied by a shot of almond vodka. For main course my wife had duck and I had breaded pork steak with broccoli, saurkraut, and mashed potato. The room was pleasant with 14 social distant guests, and Irina and her husband were welcoming. There was an opening so the kitchen area was visible. The best place for a meal in Swaffham.

Visited with family who live in the village. Group of four ordered meat dishes and two arrived only mildly hot. No-one checked if our food was OK, but when the chef came to collect our plates, we did make her aware. She apologised and asked if the waiter (who had gone home) has asked if the food was OK. However the desserts were delicious.

Valentine's special takeaway was fantastic, it is my understanding that this was the first takeaway option. I had high hopes as I have been to the restaurant a few times which has always been a lovely experience and this there first (hope of many) takeaway options was fantastic. The food and service was at its best as always. I will keep an eye out for future options. Well done, great 3 course meal for a great price. Look forward to visiting again soon in person or for takeaway.

My 4th visit. We went on a Saturday and was pleased to see the restaurant was pretty full. Very tasty food. Each of us had a different dish, and all were very happy with their choices.

Don’t be put off by the entrance to this restaurant. On entering it’s like you are being welcomed to her home. Irina greeted us, took our order, presented a authentic home cooked meal, attended to all our needs single handily. There were also 4 other tables she dealt with too!!! All three courses were delicious and a good portion. We were just so impressed with her organisation skills and work ethic no customers were kept waiting. All done with a friendly smile. We will definitely return when in the area next.

Amazing food, top service and friendly staff, it the quick summary. To dive in more detail, I would say it clearly is such an amazing restaurant in the lovely town of Swaffham, Norfolk. The friendly (Covid safe) staff & environment it makes you feel you are in someone’s home with great food and such a welcoming evening. Every course including the nibbles was well presented with a fabulous taste and portion size. This is our second time visiting and will visit again with different people to share the amazing experience. Well done to the staff & owner!

What a refreshing change from the usual pub or restaurant offerings. Rasputin's is a homespun Russian restaurant with a small but perfectly formed selection of traditional dishes with a modern twist. Probably the first time I've wanted to try every single dish on a menu. Settled for pancakes with smoked salmon & the lamb. Both delicious & reminded me of my grandmother's cooking (which is high praise indeed). Loved the Georgian red wine - and the vodka, of course. Well done to chef Irina who was working very hard in the kitchen and serving our dinner with a smile and friendly chat. Can't wait to return and try the rest of the menu. A hidden gem of a restaurant.

Having rasputin on my doorstep, and finally going in to eat there I was blown away!!!Me and a friend went in for the eat out to help out and the food was that good we ate another sharing starter and main course to share!!!The vodkas on offer are sublime as is every dish we had.It’s spotlessly clean and the view over the market place is lovely, I have no idea why we have never been before but will certainly be returning!!Peter the great lamb and the pork in breadcrumbs with sausage was very simple but divine!!!

We missed out big time not coming here on our last trip. Brilliant food served really well, there was nothing we didn’t like. This is the type of place you wish was your local restaurant.

We ate here on Saturday 15th August 2020. First visit, but all 3 of us were so impressed with the food, it was delicious. We had starters, mains and dessert and all delicious. I had pancakes, vegetarian risotto, scumptious, will definitely go back.

I have been here several times. Lovely servers and fantastic, attractively presented food. Always a friendly welcome from the staff when you go there. This was my first visit to a restaurant after lock-down. I was pleased to see the restaurant busy. Well done everybody who supports local restaurants!

Lovely starters, great main courses and too full to eat deserts. Loads of flavour, well cooked, different from normal UK pub grub, and not expensive. Try the mixed nibbles with Vodka, fabulous. Service was relaxed and friendly, not slow but not pushy, perfect. Look forward to visiting again.

Based on the reviews on Tripadvisor we visited here in September. The restaurant felt very homely, as if you were eating in someone's dining room. An interesting out of the ordinary experience with good service, good food and good beer.

This really is a little gem of a restaurant - not a hugely extensive menu which in my book is generally good and proven to be so on this occasion - but all freshly cooked to order. Quality of the food was excellent with some interesting dishes to try out from Eastern Europe and of course Russia. Service was warm and friendly - nothing appeared to be too much trouble. We would definitely recommend and plan to return very soon.

We were staying near Swaffham and when I saw that a Russian restaurant was in the town centre we just had to go. After climbing the stairs, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table. I'd already chosen what I was going to have, Beef Goulash, I hadn't had it for years and was really looking forward to it. My wife had the Duck Stroganoff and both meals were absolutely delicious. Although we had to wait a while for it to be served it was well worth it. Definitely recommend it! I just wish I wasn't driving as I would have loved to have tried the vodka.

Friendly host on arriving taking our coats and asking if we wanted to be seated at our table or enjoy a drink relaxing on the sofas. Starters were lovely ..and also the mains and desserts..

We wanted to try something different to the norm Chinese / Indian Restaurant and so we visited this quaint little Russian Restaurant in Swaffham.Never been to a Russian Restaurant before, dont think I have ever seen one before at least not in East Anglia.It was a very pleasant experience.The restaurant is only quite small, but uniquely decorated, it is an intimate dining experience.The restaurant was quiet the night we went, in fact we were the only diners.The host was lovely and extremely helpful.The starters were very nice, we had a mixed platter which had the loveliest pate. It also had a shot of vodka that came with it which was also very good, wish I had got the name of that as could have done with some more.For a main course I had the duck strogonoff which again was very nice, decent size portions.Overall was a very pleasant dining experience and something different for a change and would most certainly return.

We eat here regularly and the food is consistently good and reasonably priced. For Russian food think hearty English and you won't go far wrong.

Eaten here on various occasions including Christmas dinner, we’ve had a variety of different dishes and always loved the food. Very welcoming, pleasant atmosphere, great service. Can not recommend enough, family run, hidden little gem.

Have been meaning to come here for sometime and finally made it. The food is certainly as good as other people have described, large portions, very tasy and very good value for the money. The owner/cook is very helpful in explaining the various dishes for people like me who have not eaten Russian food before. not too many people when we visited which is a pity. Do not expect the Ritz but it is well worth a visit. I will certainly be returning. Only negative points are that they will only take cash and I wasnt too impressed with the pint of Russian bitter but that is a minot point as there are many more alcoholic choices.

Have been meaning to try Rasputins for a while and finally went after reading the positive reviews. Wasn’t disappointed. Lovely food. I had the babushka meal -meatballs with creamy mash and sauerkraut while my partner chose the Pelmeny. This was on the impossibly cheap two course meal for £10 menu followed by gorgeous honey pancakes and ice cream with a drink included! The host explained the portions on that menu were smaller for the price (teenager size, she said) but believe me they were enough for us. Quiet being midweek but Swaffham has a secret gem here, a must. Cannot understand it being so quiet. Will return. Be aware - take cash as Rasputins don’t have card facilities.

We ended up in swaffham for dinner after visiting oxburgh hall. We found this gem of a place on the town square. The starters and mains were excellent hearty fair with generous portions. Soup was great too. Russian music, the proprietor was friendly and welcoming. Sit by the window the views of the church tower are lovely! Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed my visit to this restaurant. It's a really good place for a hearty meal in a homely atmosphere. We came as a large group, with some fussy eaters and dietary requirements (vegan). It was really great that there were real vegan options on the menu, not just as an afterthought but a real meal. I really admire the manager. She has a straightforward Russian style which might seem a little blunt to some English people but actually shows that she cares very much about her food and is very proud of what she prepares. You feel that you are eating as the owner's guest at her home, not as her customer in a restaurant.

On holiday with wife and 5 children aged 10 to 19. We fancied something other than Italian Indian Chinese or Pub food saw the reviews and liked the ambience and authenticity also the food was tasty, interesting, generous and reasonably priced. Very friendly welcome! Would definitely go back although we are on holiday in Norfolk so may be on the next trip over here. Vegetarians catered for.

Sometimes you wonder if all the excellent reviews can be true they certainly are in respect of this wonderful restaurant. You have a sense that you have been invited into the owners home and are offered genuine and authentic food from a menu that would grace any Russian home. There is good space between the tables and although busy when we booked our table the service was very friendly and whilst you wait for your food you know that it will be freshly prepared by the owner who is rightly proud of her work. Very reasonable prices, beautifully cooked and presented, there are vegetarian options and gluten free options not a problem as the food is freshly prepared and can be adjusted. very friendly owners who tell you all about their food and culture. A rare find simply wonderful. The desserts are unbelievable and the Russian beer/lager as good as it gets (quite strong at 5.2%) Booking a table advised, parking in the bays outside on the main street free after 6.00 pm. Access via a number of fairly steep stairs. Just brilliant Go for it!! oh and highly recommended!!

We visited this place with friends who were staying in Swaffham and who had spotted it above the bandstand area while they were touring round. We were delighted to find a light and airy restaurant with spacious seating and were made very welcome by the Russian lady hostess/owner/cook. The menu was attractive with choice of the a la carte menu that gave large servings of tasty meals, or of £10 for two courses offering smaller platefuls but two courses. We all chose the extremely tasty Mixed Russian starters and were amazed at the lovely flavours on our plates. We all thoroughly enjoyed our main courses and it was so relaxing, not being made to feel rushed and enjoying the lovely view over the fairy-light lit square. We will certainly go back.

The restaurant is on the first floor, but it's well worth the climb. On the way up the stairs, you might notice the décor is a bit DIY, but keep climbing, you're there for the food, not the wallpaper. The service is friendly and informative, the lady chef was happy to answer questions about the cuisine / food. As this was our first time experience of Russian food, she recommended the £10 set menu, which was also our cheaper option. Nice to see someone putting a good experience above takings in their till. The food was so delicious we went back two evenings later, on the last night of our holiday. We got a real feeling of personal service. Unusually for a restaurant, the seating plan is very spacious, not trying to maximise covers. So you feel like you can stretch out without feeling hemmed in. Thoroughly recommend, even our fussy child tucked in!

Its been a while since our last visit to Rasputin .... and we had to ask ourselves the question why we hadn't come back sooner?

Located in the centre of Swaffham with the main square parking adjacent, the Rasputin is on the first floor. A clean and tidy room with linen white table cloths and comfortable chairs. The food was excellent and a compehensicve menu is available offering a variety of Russian cooking. Reputed to be the only Russian Restaurant in East Anglia.

Saw this place across the road and on checking it was no 2 on Trip Advisor in Swaffham and the set menu looked good value. We were the only customers that night and were very well looked after by the owner/cook/waitress; a lovely Russian girl who did everything that evening on her own! She was very friendly and we enjoyed chatting with her. The food was very good and made a change from our usual dining out choices

I have never eaten this type of food before, but I ate everything on my plate. Owner was friendly and knowledgeable and made our stay very comfortable. Have the meatballs and sauerkraut. Delicious! Decor was a little shabby, but the food was amazing, as was the different choices of vodka

We have just enjoyed our first taste of Russian food and were not disappointed. It was freshly prepared, authentic and delicious. The service was good, the waitress was very pleasant and helpful. On chatting to her we realised that she is also the cook and some of the dishes are family recipes. A real treat.

The food here is russian and delicious. The first time we went we ate off the 2 courses for £10 menu. The second time we used the full menu which were the same options but bigger portions. In fact we were too full and the last time we went we were back on the £10 menu, Have the vodka with the starters, the raspberry is excellent, and have the semolina cake or the tort to finish.
