First time visiting, even though local and we were not disappointed. The dining room was lovely and were allowed a table of choice even as walk ins. The bar maid/waitress was excellent and friendly, even though it was busy she took the time to make sure we had everything we asked for and made conversation, a credit to the business. Amazing home cooked food for all three courses full of flavour and large portions, excellent value for money. We will 100% be back again, as a culinary employee myself I was impressed. A big thank you to all the staff.

Delicious food and big portions for a very good price, bit of a wait for food but you could tell it was all homemade and freshly cooked. Lots of vegetarian options and very lovely staff would definitely come again!

Friendly helpful staff who looked after us and our dogs with minimal fuss. Food was delicious, well presented with separate crispy vegetables. Will definitely revisit when back in the area.

Railway Inn looks tiny from outside but has tables in a bar area and more to the rear, well maintained - in fact looks newly/recently refurbished. Meals were excellent, well cooked and nicely presented. Staff very friendly and obliging.

Always spot on. Family friendly pub. Had a number of meals and the chilli chicken is excellent and the pizza better than most italians. would definitely recommend this pub if you are passing or staying locally.

On an evening that others were closed, we made the 10 minute journey from Isle if Whithorn to give this try. The external appearance is 'modest', and in bar where we sat similarly. But a warm welcome awaited within. And the food was a genuine,'positive surprise. Expect huge portions, and modest prices. We had the steak and ale pie - both the beef (it is beef country) and the ale being excellent local produce. 100m up the road, for film buffs, is the local library, which featured as a location in the making of The Wickerman, by the way...

We stayed for a week in Whithorn and on our last night we booked the Railway Inn. A very friendly local with great staff and a no nonsense menu of traditional pub grub but with the added bonus of all being home made and none of your frozen rubbish in here. Portions were huge and very very tasty. Just a pity this was our last night! Chicken Balmoral was huge and the steak pie was outstanding. Don’t drive by, drop in and visit this hidden gem

When we arrived the waitress said, “Is it Sandra?” I said, “No, we should have a reservation under Donald” she showed us to our table saying “you’re here, what do you want to drink!?”. It might’ve been nice to have had a seat first before having to decide what to drink! Then after we’d ordered starters and mains we waited an expected amount of time before the waitress announced “the mushrooms“ from the corridor. So when no-one else in the dinning room put their hand up and my husband had ordered the mushrooms, we assumed they must’ve been his. However I had ordered bruschetta and had prawn cocktail put down in front of me, so had an idea the order wasn’t right! It turned out the waitress had brought us another table’s starters, the younger waitress quickly came over to say that the starters were for another table and apologised to us and told us our starters wouldn’t be far away. They weren’t and they were ok, although the bruschetta was VERY crisp and I was afraid it would ping off my plate and hit my husband or one of the other diners when I was SAWING through it! Anyway we got through it! The second course was again ANNOUNCED by the original waitress from the corridor, we decided this time not to accept until we knew that this was our meal as there were a few other tables in the restaurant by this time, it was ours! We accepted our mains AFTER finishing our conversation sentence! Anyway, this time it was definitely ours, the venison pie for my husband and my seabass with boiled potatoes. This turned out to be venison soup with a piece of puff pastry set on top and a VERY slim, SHORT piece of seabass with two ROAST potatoes. We had some boiled vegetables and a few boiled potatoes in a side dish too but when I had ordered the seabass with boiled potatoes I’d have expected the boiled potatoes to be on the plate and have the roast potatoes as an option on the veg plate. My husband also expected the pie to be more of a pie than a soup, he said to me, “had I preferred mash, where would they have placed it?”. Understandably, we didn’t order dessert! I’m not sure we’ll be back unless (the waitress has some waitress training) we hear very good reviews. As one of two restaurants within 5 miles of home we’d have to be very sure it was going to be a good night out before making plans to go there again, would’ve preferred a quiet home-cooked meal and to have save the cash.

WOW.....how lucky were we to find this best kept secret in Scotland! Honestly, the homemade food is exceptional with amazing service from Caroline and proprietor David. I've critiqued on many Restaurants in Scotland, England and throughout the world and believe me this is up there with the best. We're back soon and can't wait. Highly recommend.

We visited as a group of eight on Saturday night. Starters were fantastic 6 mains were also spot on but two of us chose the Mixed Grill and were both very disappointed with sausage looking and tasting like a very cheap supermarket sausage not what we would expect. All 8 of us then went on to have desserts and they were great too. Overall very good and we would return but wouldn’t chooser the mixed grill.

Myself and my family thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this place! The owner was very pleasant and friendly and made us feel ever so welcome. The food was faultless; myself, my wife and my daughter loved both our mains and desserts - all of which were very reasonably priced! Will definitely be visiting again and I absolutely recommend this place!

After a nightmare start to our holiday, our car broke down in dumfries, we sat down for our first family dinner at the railway. The staff couldn't do more for us, so friendly and helpful. Kids were allowed to be kids and just had a great meal. Food highlights were the mixed grill, lamp chop was phenomenal. The lasagne was homemade and amazing. But the highlight was the homemade pizza. Absolutely delicious. Would 100 percent recommend

the meal was lovley until i got my pudding and i found a hair on the spoon, some of there staff are quite ignorant/ not well mannered. when me and my friend first walked in one of the staff said to us “what are you here for” which to me sounds very cheeky and made us not feel as welcome as we would liked. we also felt uncomfortable and as though we were a burden. we waited 17 mins after being asked if we want the desert menus to order our desert even when staff were behind the counter doing nothing. overall good food but not very good service

Driving on a rainy Sunday whilst in the area on holiday, we noticed this little pub in Whithorn. We stopped and asked if they were dog friendly- they were. A bar with a pool table to the left and a small dining room to the right. Another family with a dog were having lunch so a bit of barking ensued. The owners kindly offered us a table in the rear dining room which we really appreciated. Excellent menu, good choice of pizzas and other pub food. Not Sunday lunches though which wasn't a problem for us. Between us we had the gammon and a sweet chilli chicken dish. The portions were generous. Super friendly people and lovely food, would highly recommend and we're so pleased to add another dog friendly option to our list of places to go.

After full refurbishment the Railway Inn is bright, friendly & welcoming. We’re glad we went & hope to be back very soon

We had a warm welcome and the staff were very chatty and gave us lots of tips on where to go and what to see while we are here which was very helpful. We had two delicious freshly cooked meals, Fish pie and Chicken Balmoral. Puddings were yummy too, Sticky Toffee Pudding and Mint Aero Cheesecake and prices are very reasonable It is dog friendly which is great for us as we take him most places with us. We would highly recommend a visit.

If I could give more stars I would! We visited here on 2 occasions for food, as a family while holidaying along the road. My partner and I also enjoyed a few drinks in the beer garden on sunnier days. So impressed with the lovely, friendly, helpful staff. The food was really good pub grub, tasty and good value. I should have taken pictures, but I was too busy enjoying it!! Also, a special mention to the lovely wee lady behind the bar who got my rum & coke just right every time (1 ice cube 😉). If we lived locally, we'd be back for sure.
