Qismat in Moray

As a fairly regular customer and one who tru!t enjoys the food, I was really disappointed to find the prices had been increased for the Christmas period! To pay extra, without warning and for the pleasure of a Christmas napkin is pretty shoddy given that the web site still displays the original price, Disappointing guys Happy Christmas to you too

2 glaring negatives is all i can say about this establishment: 1: Whoever picked the ridiculously short tube skirt uniforms for the young female waiting staff needs their hard drives checked , its outrageous that a restaurant would make their young staff work in clothing that obviously makes them uncomfortable and barely covers them 2: The food we ordered was, without question, the worst indian experience we have ever had . Bland and completely tasteless , no spices no heat no nothing ... it was like eating unseasoned boiled chicken stew . Do yourself a favour and give this place a major bodyswerve !

The Qismat is a great restaurant that has really impressed me. The food is amazing and the service is friendly and welcoming. Well worth a visit!

Lunchtime with family. Absolutely delicious meal. Service perfect. Youngest described it as exquisite and we truly had to agree.

Went for lunch with granddaughter, will be back soon. Great food (not a drop left on plates). Staff were friendly and professional, we all tried each other's dishes and can honestly say wouldn't want to change anything. Well worth a visit. If you don't you will definitely miss out.

The Qismat is one of my favourite eateries in Elgin. Always an attractive restaurant, the recent refurbishment adds to the enjoyment of the dining experience. A comprehensive menu covers most of the usual Asian favourites. Prices are on par with other similar Elgin restaurants. Service has always been first class, and this was no different at my recent visit. Mr Ali, the proprietor is always on hand, giving friendly greetings to customers. Finally and most importantly, our meal was delicious.

Qismat in Elgin dominates the lunchtime market for curries. The menu offers a choice of starter and main course (mild, medium or medium/hot) with tea, coffee or ice cream to finish. A much reduced menu compared to times past. My chicken tikka starter comprised a goodly portion of chicken with a bland sauce and a few shreds of lettuce. The Lamb Tikka Faislabadi main course and boiled rice was served in earthenware bowls. Spicy dish but morose in appearance and lacking in the distinctive flavours of Qismat-past. Excellent coffee. Polite, friendly and efficient service. Cobra available on draught. Beautiful refurbished decor but the area nearest the bar seemed empty at lunchtime and lacking in ambience. Soft drinks available but only in bottles; no draught coke anymore. Eye-watering prices for a bottle of wine. The lunch menu has been cut tremendously since refurbishment. Didn’t like the serving bowls (unless Qismat is supporting a local pottery). No doubt the lack of competition in Elgin has resulted in this deterioration, A restaurant can only trade on its reputation for so long. Because of my disappointing lunchtime experience, I’m less likely to try an evening meal; there are superior alternatives in Elgin. Qismat seems intent upon increasing profits rather than providing an exhilarating lunchtime curry experience.

Hungrige Touristen auf der Suche nach einem Restaurant, das eher typisch für UK sein sollte. Wir fanden das Qismat, wo wir relativ preiswert fündig wurden. Deutlich war die Klientel durch Einheimische geprägt, oft genug - wie hier - für ein Zeichen guter Qualiät. Für etwa (umgerechnet) 85 € (3 Personen) wurden wir lecker bewirtet und genossen den flotten und freundlichen Service.

We ordered a takeaway and were extremely disappointed. I had the chicken tikka garlic and the sauce was not authentic or up to scratch at all. It was very below par and I wouldn't say it resembled any decent curry dish you would usually get in the Qismat. The chef the night of the 30/08/24 does not know what they're doing I'm afraid so I won't be going back! :(

First time I've been back to the Qismat since it was redecorated . Must admit I preferred it the way it was . Was still a nice meal but the menu has been cut back a lot from the old one . I have a copy of the old one at home and quite a few of the dishes I liked have now disappeared and the menu is a lot more limited . Think I'll try some of the other Indian restraunts in town for a while .

Had an evening meal here while in Elgin on Busines . Good on road parking outside the resteraunt ( free ) Staff were very helpful and welcoming . The menu is varied and well priced . I asked for lamb Karahi as it wasnt on the menu but it wasnt a problem . The dish arrived which really wasnt what i ordered but it was very nice so no need to complain. All the food was fresh and tasty and the price was reasonable . Definatley worth another visit next time im in elgin for work

Has to be the best Indian Resturant in the UK. Food always great and the staff are so helpful at all times. Great realaxed atmosphere and the new decor looks fantastic. Woud recommend anyoine in the area gives it a try. Legend of a resturant.

For one reason and another, we have not visited the Qismat for some time. It was time to correct this, and my wife and I had lunch there today. I am delighted to say nothing has changed since our last visit. A nicely varied lunch menu, quick friendly service, and most importantly, a delicious lunch. The restaurant has had a recent makeover, which adds to a very enjoyable dining experience. Recommended

I stayed in Elgin many years ago and moved away to Germany for 15 years and now moved to London. Visited Elgin a few days ago and visited the places where I grew up. I decided to bring my husband and kids to Qismat. It was very busy at lunch time and was lucky that they could accommodate us. They had a 3 course lunch menu which was excellent value around £15 per person, the portions are big and the service was very good. Definitely give this place a visit if in the area.

Been coming to Elgin for many years now for business and normally visit Elgin twice a year. First time back since they had a major refurbishment and they have done an excellent job with the decor. The food is just as good as before and love the new menu. Definitely worth a visit if coming to Elgin.

We went for lunch today and had a great dining experience, served by such friendly and efficient staff. The food was exceptional in both taste and presentation, tremendous value for money at 14.95 for three courses. Really couldn t fault anything and will most definately come back soon. Many thanks

From the moment we walked in we were greeted by wonderful staff and a beautiful restaurant, immaculate. We all had starters, mains and coffee/ice cream. The menu was exceptional quality and excellent value. We travelled through from Inverness. Really look forward to coming back soon

Had a booking for Restaurant, was not busy but service was far too fast. Starter plates were being collected at our table before everyone was finished eating. Empty curry bowls uplifted as soon as put down on table. Being watched and things picked up from our table all through meal. Not comfortable surroundings to be in. Mild chicken was tasteless and wishy washy. Very expensive, not worth money and wont be back.

We were in for a sit down meal last night and just want to send a quick message to thank you all. We didn’t book a table but you managed to squeeze us in, which we are so glad you did, a fabulous experience from the start, warm and welcoming staff and fantastic food. Still by far the best curry house in Moray. Highly recommend Murgh eh Mingora, chicken Desi or chicken shaslik All top dishes made with great attention to detail and authentic spices throughout Excellent for eating in or carry outs

Absolutely amazing lunch here today. Food was piping hot and delicious. Waiters very friendly and efficient and food was served very quickly. Great selection of food on the lunch menu to choose from. They even cater for kids that don't like curry. Couldn't ask for more.

Food very expensive £36.10 for 2 take out meals both below expect standard rice comes in a plastic bag not bpa free. Madras is very sweet and no other flavour. Food extremely wet and not appetising.

Went for the Monday buffet which finishes at 8. We arrived at 7 and had to wait a short while for our reserved table. The choice of starters and desserts was not great and many of the dishes had been emptied, without replenishment leaving largely dried out pakora and naan bread. The main courses of chicken and one lamb were reduced to the sauce only in a few cases , all protein having been taken by earlier diners and again not replenished. Admittedly, we were eating towards the end of the advertised times and perhaps things might have been better had we arrived earlier. The price was reasonable but the quality and choice of dishes on offer reflected that we felt. All in all, not a great dining experience sadly as this restaurant generally gets a good name. Our tip would be arrive early if attending the buffet night.

We had the business lunch menu which is great value. Food was good and plentiful so was the service. We're definitely going back.

There has been a change in the quality of the food. We have been coming here for a number of years but the last 4 visits have been consistently poor. The buffet night the curries Had no flavour and were watery. The starters were chopped up into little dry pieces. The take away recently the chicken tikka was 4 tiny pieces with no sliced onion as usual. The salad served was bagged lambs lettuce that had wilted away, no lemon tomato it was very poor. The rice and Nan had reduced in portion it was small. The onion bahjis were little half pieces served again no salad as it used to be. The curry I had,had hardly any chicken all sauce. The top of fresh coriander has gone also. The quality has changed a lot and there are other Indians I would recommend in the town that are good quality and value for money. This seems to be more profit over quality now.

Whenever we visit my mum in Elgin, one of the first things we plan is when we will be visiting Qismat. It has become a routine over the years. The food is great and the nan bread homemade and delicious . The staff are very polite, helpful and attentive which makes the whole experience very special. Can't wait for our next visit.

Very small amount of rice served directly on the plate, for the 50 years iv been eating curries the rice has always been served separately on a platter or bowl, it’s the first time I’ve left feeling hungry!

I’ve been a customer of the Qismat, Elgin off and on for a few decades, but have visited once a week for the last month or so. The food and service are always exceptional and the guidance of Mr Ali to extend your culinary experience is always welcomed.

Had a takeaway from here whilst working in the area, food was good but did lack a bit of flavour. Good vegetarian and vegan options and the staff were great and very helpful. Would visit again.

Went for a takeout with my family and our order was perfect chicken nice and juicy, rice soft and bursting with flavour and the sauce couldn’t be finer and when I came to pick it up the staff at the counter were very kind hearted Highly recommend

Last week I ordered a take away and specifically asked for no coriander as I have an allergy. I was told that this was no problem and they would make sure that there would be none in it. Drove home 23 miles and opened the curry to find it covered it the "green stuff". Curry not touched and wasn't driving back to complain. Just won't be going back to a place where use to be very good.

Two had dinner, bahjis and something else for starters and chicken and lamb curries for mains. The onion bahjis were a little floury but all the other food was very good. The mains were tasty and had good ingredients and were quite spicy. Overall very good. Service was very good. Ambience ok.

This was my first visit since lockdown was eased.I am delighted to say nothing has changed since my last visit.Superb service, a lovely meal. A varied menu and all regulations pertaining to Covid regulations were adhered to.I had been looking forward to a meal at the Qismat since the start of lockdown and I was not disappointed.

We eat at Qismat fairly regularly - but not for a long time during these lockdown days. A few weeks ago the restaurant opened for take aways and deliveries and we decided to order for home delivery. The delivery service within Elgin is free for orders over £25 or alternatively you can have a 10% discount if you collect from the restaurant. We enjoyed the food almost as much as at the restaurant but we missed the friendly service of the excellent staff. Thoroughly enjoyed !

The qismat is the best Indian restaurant in Scotland easy! Top class service from the staff and top class god every time wouldn’t go anywhere else in Elgin for an Indian apart from here.

The Qismat is the best place ever! The curries are delicious and the naan breads are the best I've ever had. All staff are so attentive and friendly. The portion size is perfect. Myself and my family won't go anywhere else. 10/10! Amazing. See you soon!

Had a great meal a bottle of wine and everything was fine until I received a call from my credit card fraud department.

Being institutionalised, I had what I always have, which is lamb patia and a garlic nan. What can I say? It's my fave. Hadn't been here in many years, as it went downhill, but had heard it's changed hands some time ago, so thought I'd give it a shot. To have only 4 other people in at 1.30pm on a Saturday in such a big restaurant was a bit of a shock. Says outside such is from £4.99 for 2 courses. I ordered mushroom bhaji, lamb patia and a garlic nan.The mushroom bhaji was just a few soggy mushrooms and a bit of tired salad, that had seen better days. The garlic nan was very garlicky (which I like). However, it was soft like a piece of cloth. So I'm presuming they had precooked it and just kept it warm somewhere. The lamb patia (which I had to pay an extra £1, just to have lamb) was 80% a tomato sauce, with a few very tiny bits of lamb floating in it (the size of small broad beans). I ordered a half of lager, which I was charged £4 for. Total bill was almost £14, and felt completely ripped off, as left most of it anyway. Utter rubbish and I should have taken the fact it was empty as a sign of things to come anyway, so my own fault I guess. As my dear old Mam would say - "Don't do it Ethel!"

Mr Ally needs to attend a disability awareness course and understand that if someone hesitates when speaking its for a reason. My friend is very ill and struggles with his words at times. Shouting Hurry Up when they can’t remember what they ordered is rude and offensive. We won’t be back.

Visited Elgin last Thursday. Noticed advertising board outside restaurant for business mans lunch £4.99 from 12-2pm. It was 1.20 soo asked if we could still get the business mans lunch. Was told yes but that they closed at 2pm. We were shown to table and given full size menus. I told the waiter we wanted the business mans lunch expecting it to be a limited menu. He pointed to the menus we had and said “yes” . I asked what options were available in the deal. He pointed out starters and 3 different lists of main courses and said “these”. We were served quickly with our food and everything was delicious. As the deal was for three courses we asked about desserts and were told only tea coffee or ice cream. We had a tea and a coffee and finished as quickly as we could as it was already 2pm and we could see they were anxious to close.when we went to pay the bill we were asked for almost £25. I said we had asked for the three course business mans lunch at £4.99 but we’re told that was for vegetarian option only. That had definitely not been mentioned at any time despite me stating three times that it was the lunch deal we were in for. We paid without making any further protests but it left us feeling we had been conned into paying for a full meal when we had made it clear three times that we wanted the £4.99 business mans lunch. We only had a soft drink each so that didn’t bump the price up. If you eat here make sure before you sit down what you will be charged.

Group of four for lunch, pre booked our table, as it was busy at lunchtime. Everyone loved our dishes and service!

Brought friends from London to have dinner and enjoyed a fantastic meal, we chose the set menu for four which gives and amazing choice of starters, mains, breads and a lovely dessert , and extremely good value too. The food, as always, was superb, The Qismat is well know for it's expertise in the use of spices and they excel in bringing out the full flavour of the food. Service, under the supervision of Mr Ali, is faultless and a most enjoyable meal is guaranteed.

Nothing negative to say. Huge menu, large portions, great service, good value, nice atmosphere. Good central location.

2nd visit this year and this time for the buffet on a Monday night. It’s famous and both sessions are full. Busy Staff as usual and the variety of food is great for all tastes. The desserts are a bit basic but that’s not really why your there is it!

Elgin is not the most blessed when it comes to good eating places, although variety and standards have certainly improved over the past few years. Quismat is one of our favourites as the surroundings, food and service are all of a very high standard.

Had a meal on Sunday evening at the Qismat in Elgin, have visited this restaurant several times and is one of the best if not the best Tandoori restaurant in the area. The service and friendliness of the staff is top rate, Mr Ali the owner is all on hand to look after you. The choice of menu is first rate and meals are prepared and presented excellently. I really enjoy their Chicken Tikka tandoori of the bone, best choice for me, mix pakora starter and mix platter was excellent, so was the peshwari Nan bread. My wife had the chicken burryanie which she really enjoyed. Will definitely be back to enjoy the food in such a warm welcoming atmosphere, it makes your meal out feel really special. Well done to Mr Ali and his team. They are very popular for take aways as well..

Simply a really good meal, excellent service, lovely surroundings. All at a reasonable price. What more do you want. Excellent experience.

We booked a table for four on a busy Saturday night and were not disappointed. Staff were efficient and friendly and the restaurant clean. We sat in a side booth so although the restaurant was fairly busy we had privacy and could have a good conversation without disturbing other diners! We all ordered different dishes and everything was delicious. One of our party asked for a recommendation as he doesn’t like spicy food and really enjoyed the suggested chicken mara and chicken passanda. We will definitely return when we’re in the area. The bill came to £95 which is a lot less than we’ve paid elsewhere for a good quality 2 course Indian meal, including alcoholic drinks, for 4!

Just back from a family meal at Qismat. 2 years ago we had a fantastic meal here but tonight was the complete opposite. It was buffet night but we ordered from the menu. Poppadom were soft. Pakora were few.dansak and veg balti we could not eat. Chilli chicken had no chilli. Would not recommend

Have visited Qismat a few times with both family and friends. The food is always excellent and the staff are always friendly and informative about the menu. My favourite is the Chicken Tikka garlic chilli and the Peshawari Naan. Look forward to going back 😁

Ate here on Monday. I have eaten here before, in Elgin on business regularly. Monday is buffet night and I am not usually a fan of buffets. I am sure they would have made me a dish from the menu but I thought I would give the buffet a go. Had two lamb dishes and a lentil one, both were great. Best thing, as ever, was the staff. I am sure they didn't need a solo walk in on a really busy night but they were happy to accommodate me. This is a business that is really trying. Good luck and see you soon.

Good restaurant serving tandoori and mughlai food. Ambience is good we coming back from Highlands and spotted this restaurant.

The staff were great at accommodating a group of 5 folks who hadn't seen each other in years and took ages to decide what to have and then would have talked all arvo!! The food was fabulous and much appreciated.

Booked a table for the four of us on Saturday. Glad I did as it was so busy at 6pm. Always smart clean and an inviting place to go to eat. We only had main courses as we know how large the portions are. . My husband and I had Murgha masala which was brilliant. It does have a kick but does not blow your head off also no after taste. I got towels to wipe hands and face a fee your meal. It is the same standard as it was when it first opened. Brilliant .

A group of local customers both business and social turned up at 2130 and were turned down for table service We are your lifeblood Why would you do that when takeaway was available??

I chose this restaurant out of quite a few available in Elgin. The service was efficient but not particularly friendly. The menu was very varied with a number of specialities listed I was able to choose a meal I’d never tried before. Sadly I can’t recall it’s unusual title. Sorry! However everywhere was clean and despite being quite busy service was very quick. The naans were huge and the portion size was excellent. I was unable to eat all my meal but this didn’t reflect on the quality.

Love the buffet here, always a wide selection on offer and it's always hot and fresh Booking is essential though

Visited here after being away for 20odd yrs. the service was brilliant. The young lads knee their stuff and offered advice on what to have. They noticed stuff and were always on the move and serving. The ambience was great and the place was busy. The food was excellent with a freshness and the fusion of the spices and the freshly cooked chicken were the highlight. Overall loved it and wasn't disappointed and the menu was wide ranging.

Visit here every time I'm up on business. Never fails to impress. Friendly polite staff but more importantly, excellent food every time. Wide choice of dishes and accompaniments, something to suit all tastes. If you're not going early you'll needs to book,it gets busy...always a good sign!

Torn on this review....4 if us visited here. 3 ordered different curries and 1 ordered fish and chips. I know what your thinking 'why order fish & chips at an Indian'. But due to being outnumbered and not liking Idian food, you have to go with the majority. Anyway, the staff were brilliant, very helpful. The curries were very good. However, the fish & chips was shocking.

Read the reviews this is suppose to be morays number1 indian restaurant well if it is id hate to taste the worst,went for a takeaway when we got home part of the order was wrong the chicken jalfrezie was bland the garlic bread had brown slimey stuff on it which made the bread sopping wet just went straight into bin,i think they need to send their cooks to the ashoka in glasgow to learn how to cook indian cuisine,do yourself a favour save your money go to marks n spencer and buy yourself an indian meal deal much better.they only got one point as the premises seem clean and staff were polite.

We love Indian/Pakistani food so specifically chose this place. As soon as we looked at the menu we should have left. The starters resembled a typical Indian/Pakistani but the mains were incomprehensible. We just hoped the dishes had a regional history new to us. Very few recognisable dish names and descriptions. We ordered two lamb dishes with strange names, one claiming to be ginger based, the other coriander based. Neither had one whole spice in evidence Both had mushrooms and no other veg except onion. One which claimed to have a bhoona base,reminded us of a cheap jar of Italian arrabiata sauce but with less flavour. Truly inedible as tomatoes were not expected in such quantity. The other had no fresh chillies or spices in sight but clearly had alot of chilli powder or similar chucked in. The lamb was chewy and had clearly not been cooked in either sauce. Neither dish was really edible. The naan was okay but we suspect bought in. The rice came on one of the dinner plates despite us saying we would share rice and bread. Surely a restaurant can find a separate dish for rice? The waiting staff were very smart and professional. The environment was very pleasant. Sadly, if you truly like real Indian food find another restaurant. It was also expensive whether the food was edible or not.

I visited tonight, booked on a recommendation. I normally do not like to go out and eat because I'm so particular, however, this place is utterly delicious. We had the buffet and it was fresh, hot, and the flavors were so much more than the run of the mill. I was impressed, service was fantastic, all the staff were impeccably dressed, friendly, and not intrusive. I will definitely recommend you, and be back sharpish!!

Nice people handling this restaurant. They were happy to make changes in the curry as per my requirements, what else do you need?

We had booked a table well in advance for Friday evening, but due to heavy traffic driving up from Aberdeen we had to phone a couple of times to let them know we would be delayed. That was no problem, and we were warmly greeted when we eventually arrived. The restaurant was very busy with festive diners, however service was great and speedy! We asked for recommendations and our waiter was very helpful. We shared an onion bhaji, which came with a delicious sauce and a garlic prawn & mushroom puri - both very nice! And then we had the Murgh Khan puri and the Chicken Tikka Lashkara for mains with egg rice and an onion& garlic nan. The curries were medium and medium hot and quite different but both very tasty! The only negative I would say was that the serving of rice was on the small side, however the nan was huge, so altogether between the two of us, it was plenty! I have to apologize for not leaving a tip, but we had arrived from Norway and had not been to a cash machine so we had no British cash and it wasn’t possible to add a tip on the card. So sorry about that! We will tip generously on our next visit!
