A friend and I found this spot on the way back to Alford from Glasgow. We stopped in expecting the normal cafe style food. Boy were we wrong! We both had the unpretentious sounding ham, egg and tatties. What we got was perfectly cooked pork belly. Crispy and creamy pomme anna, a stunning apple and radish roumalade and the most delicious hollandaise foam. It was amazing. Everything on the plate married beautifully together and left us replete with forest flavours chasing around our mouths. The staff are just lovely. Welcoming and warm. And the cafe itself is a great place to kick back and relax. We can’t recommend this enough. PS. I bought my husband here two days later and he was equally impressed.

Really nice food! Halloumi burger and chips was very tasty, lots of gluten free options as well (you need to ask though) Service was really good and it was a hot day so we sat outside. Little bit pricey but all cafes/and restaurants seem to be upping their prices recently.

Do not go near on Donald Donnie day. Scandalous prices and only had option of a burger or fries. Could have fitted the fries in the palm of my hand and they were charging £4.50!! Feel totally taken advantage of as they have a captive audience.

Really delicious lunch at Potarch, a fabulous menu to choose from. We had children’s burgers- all homemade and full of goodness, I had the salad (flavour combinations were *chefs kiss*) we had the smashed peas which was SO good and shashouka, exceptional. The coffee is delicious too. It’s a must visit for Deeside if you can.

Wow. Not been here since it was under new management by the Nichols. And what a wonderful, friendly, cafe it is with superb food coming out of the kitchen. My wife had the posh homemade fish finger butty and I had the pulled pork with dauphinoise potatoes and a perfectly poached egg on top. Proper home baked cheesecake and coffee followed before we waddled off! Definitely our new go to place. Highly recommended.

First time visiting and it’s our new favourite spot! Drove down from Ballater with the dogs and went for a walk along the river and into the forest then sat outside at Potarch. Small, unique, beautiful menu! Fresh and interesting ingredients, delicious flavours. The dogs enjoyed the shade from the big wooden table. Friendly and attentive staff. We’ll see you next week!! :)

We cycled out to Potarch today for our 12th wedding anniversary. I chose the vegan curry with cauliflower rice, which was fabulous! The chef was kind enough to share the ingredients list so I will have fun trying to recreate it at home! My husband says his chips were the best, and so was his coffee. He wasn't keen on the jelly ear mushrooms in the venison stroganoff, but that's just personal taste. Staff were lovely and nothing too much trouble. And the curry fuelled me well for the ride back to Aberdeen!

Fish and Chips was very dry and by the dark colour of the batter had been twice cooked or overcooked once. My friend also had fish and chips, his was completely different and was freshly cooked. When I informed the staff of the situation, it was replaced with a half haddock. For goodness sake folks that was just adding insult to injury! This was not our first time and i must say we were a bit disappointed with the menu choice as it has changed little in the last 2 years. I understand that the venison comes from the estate, but with a venison casserole and a pie it does not balance the already small menu. We also experienced a similar situation to another reviewer, regarding a specials Board Quiche that was advised to double up on to make it a main dish.Everything else was fine regarding the service and the surroundings.

We had been to the Potarch previously and thoroughly enjoyed the setting and food. We were impressed with the menu and specials board and decided to have one of the specials as a main. We were informed that the special we had chosen, quiche, was a starter but we could have it as a main, which we did. When the bill came we were horrified to find that we had been charged for four starters which meant our simple Sunday lunch cost twice as much ad anticipated. We will not return!

We’d used this restaurant some time ago prior to its refurbishment and looked forward to a Sunday lunchCar parking was adjacent and a couple of electrical chargers promised good things personified by whom we assumed was the manager, a good guyThe waiter(?) chef(?) was the most sullen person I’ve encountered front of house. He was disgraceful and quite frankly the food he served wasn’t much better. Why didn’t we walk out? We’d been invited! Now it’s a country pub so fully expect the smell of wet Labrador at an adjoining table - adds a certain tang to roast beef but not one which my city friend could readily acceptPity, we won’t be back

We opted for lunch out in the countryside as it was a beautiful day for a drive out of town. The restaurant is approximately 15 minutes drive from Banchory & well worth the visit. The food is fantastic with a lot of the meat served coming directly from the Ballogie Estate. Both the venison & lamb dishes were melt in the mouth. Half portions are also available which were most welcome. The serving staff were attentive & helpful without being intrusive. Unfortunately we had no room for dessert so will be back to sample. Menu had just the right amount of choices, and the food arrived promptly and was piping hot, well made and tasty. Toilets, like the rest of the place, were immaculate. Lovely setting, pretty restaurant and spotless toilets. However, the staff let the place down. The waitress was not very welcoming and barely smiled the whole time we were there and made us feel like we were a burden. The place was not busy but it took an hour to be served a caesar salad and fish and chips...perhaps the kitchen had to go and catch the fish?? Also, whilst recognising the menu on the website is a "sample menu" the caesar salad was £3 more expensive than suggested. The portions were small for the price (for both dishes)

Lovely location and ambience. Loves the little amuse bouche and bread prior to getting our meals. The starters were gorgeous: mussels and prawns. The mains were slightly disappointing: steak and stew. The stew was just a stew, no sides and looked a bit funny on the plate by itself. It was very tasty though. The renovations and modernisation of the old buildings into a cafe and restaurant have been brilliantly done. While the atmosphere was of a quality restaurant and the food really was fabulously prepared and cooked lots of little things let the experience down..On one of the hottest days of the year only two small windows were slightly ajar, and it was baking in there. How hungry are you when you’re too hot? Added to this we were sat at our table ( with the menus ) for 10 minutes before our drinks order was taken, and it was another 10minutes before they appeared. While I am a big fan of not being rushed for our food order, as there was such a long wait there was no opportunity to get another drink until we had been there an hour ( bearing in mind it was very hot!) Our water jug had a chipThe menu had more of a winter feel to it - fish and chips, venison stew. All with chips, Something light, with salad, would have been great. We all had our eye on the homemade cheesecake, so didn’t have starters, only to find it was off the menu. So two of us had Eton mess instead, this was quite disappointing, as it was really a large glass of squirty cream with a tiny bit of meringue and some fruit syrup, a massive lack of summer berries ( in July in Scotland!)I’m not sure I would rush back, but I’m glad we went

We stumbled on the Potarch while staying on Deeside and looking for somewhere to have lunch. We were intending to sit outside at one of the picnic tables as we had our wee dog with us and it was too hot to leave her in the car. However, the manager invited us inside as the place is very dog friendly. We were lucky to get a table as it was busy being Sunday. Once seated and restraining our excitable pup the manager again appeared with a water bowl for the dog and proceeded to give her some gravy bone biscuits claiming he always fed the dogs first! The lunch menu is more adventurous than many smaller restaurants but we quickly opted for the set lunch menu for £12.95 for three, yes three, courses. What a good decision that turned out to be. A choice of five starters of which I chose classic mussels with shallots and wine which came in a small cast iron pot piping hot and plenty for a starter all large plump and juicy. My wife had king prawns with chilli and followed with fish and chips which she declared moist and very tasty the modest portion being ample for a three course lunch. I had the slow braised beef casserole also in a cast iron pot which kept it very hot. For me, who adds all sorts of flavours to such things, it was a bit bland but nonetheless very tasty and tender and ample portion. We could both have been satisfied with that but since sweet was included I opted for the Eaton Mess which was a delight with strawberries and she had a fresh fruit salad topped with a lemon sorbet which she said was wonderful. We shall certainly make a point of eating here again. The staff were really excellent led by the dog friendly manager who who assume is French and he certainly knows how to run this small but popular restaurant, quietly directing the staff and watchful of the customers.

Food: just acceptable.Price: not great value.Atmosphere: rather bleak.Greeting: unhelpful, slow and deliberately rude. The man who dealt with us behaved as though he was doing us a favour. Reluctantly - and ultimately offensively. Perhaps the absence of competition out here leads to complacency and lack of professionalism, but the deal should be the same everywhere:- the establishment ensures that we are dealt with courteously and professionally, if they fall short they apologise; - in return we give them our money, they aren’t doing us an unpaid favour. We kept our part of the bargain; they didn’t. It was little consolation to be told, without apology, that the behaviour of the person concerned was due to a severe hangover - and certainly no excuse. If someone in a customer-facing job turns up unfit to perform that role, he should be assigned to other duties. We don’t just pay for food, we pay for a pleasant experience. Nice location when the weather’s good. If we come again we’ll bring a picnic.

We were warmly welcomed into the pleasant ambiance of the restaurant and found ourselves a delightful corner seat. The service on hand was easy-going, friendly and efficient. The menu is extensive and comprehensive but our eyes immediately landed on the 'Specials' board which today featured Ballogie Estate Venison Casserole. Yum! Together with some tasty Potato & Leek Soup (on a chilly day), lunch was sorted. Since we had a variety of appetites at our table, we found the availability of both small and large portions of both the Soup and the Casserole to be very helpful, and just what we wanted. The Venison Casserole, complete with potatoes and vegetable in its own little cast-iron pot, was to die for and is well worth going out of your way! It was simply delicious, and very filling. On this occasion no room for a dessert, only coffees all round, followed by a walk to work off the lunch. We'll definitely be back! Thank you, Potarch Café & Restaurant! A great experience!

Have driven past here on a number of occasions and never stopped as only going to Ballater where we normally stop for lunch or a coffee. From now on I will be stopping here, it is excellent, the menu has a lovely selection and all courses are fairly priced, the food is outstanding and it is a great atmosphere within. Great service was provided by the staff on duty.I will be returning as soon as possible.

Popped in yesterday as we were in the area and after a short walk we went to the rrestaurant to ask if there was a table for 2 for lunch. There was a lady preparing a table by the door so I asked her if they had any tables - her response “no chance”!!No sorry were fully booked or unfortunately we don’t have anything, just “no chance”. Not a great first impression

I moved to Banchory a few month ago and discover this little cafe restaurant while walking along the river.Been there a few times since and never been disappointed. Had breakfast a few time and lunch as well, always very good, they started a lunch set menu 2 course for under £13 which is great value and the quality is fantastic, fresh and tasty food. But what made me write a review is the dinner, tried it in December. When you arrive they offer you an amuse bouche to start, then they give you some fresh homemade bread while you wait for your food to be prepared. I chhose their homemade chicken liver parfait and the venison steak, my wife had the mussels and the fish which was a lovely fillet of Cod in creamy saffron sauce with prawns, it was really tasty and well presented. We shared the sticky toffee pudding which is from cartmel, I believe it's the best I ever had. The wine list is also quite nice, not extensive but if you like organic wine they have a nice selection, we took a bottle of Italian unfiltered white wine which was amazing.Service was nice, attentive and friendly. I will definitely bring my family when they will come visit us, I can't wait to show them the place.

I’d viewed a few other local venues before settling on Potarch Restaurant to host Ann’s surprise birthday dinner for 24 guests. The restaurant manager Michael took the stress away with his can do approach; the ambiance of the restaurant was set perfectly; log fire with a piper playing in the background to welcome guests along with bubbly & delicious canapés.The superb food & courteous service enhanced the evening, finalising with a dance.Thank you for creating a perfect evening.Donald Keenan

Recently visited with family for an evening meal. The refurbishment of the property has been very tastefully done providing a warm inviting venue. The menu whilst small I regard as an indication that all produce is fresh whilst still offering the diner a varied selection to choose from. Our meal was well prepared and presented by friendly staff out to ensure their diners were well looked after. Without question I would recommend dining albeit it is a bit out in the sticks.Since visiting I have spoken to others who sing the praise of their lunches which in 2019 will be on the cards for us.

Came here with my family on a Sunday. We hadn’t booked, but only had to wait a few minutes for a tablet. Service was quick and friendly and we all enjoyed our food! The atmosphere and decor is really nice, especially the wood burner.

My family of 6 came during "the Gathering" so it was pretty crowded with spectators that came to watch attempted lifts of the Dinnie Steens and other strong man feats. We had a wonderful time. Food was great and the service was fast and friendly. We enjoyed a wonderful conversation with a fireman from Stirling that was there to attempt the lift. Which was great because he was there by himself so we became his cheering section as he made his lift. I also had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Martin Jancsics a stone lifting legend. As well as enjoying a conversation with Stevie Shanks' wife and mom. What a great day, with great people and really good food.

Lovely little place! Serves very tasty food - fish & chips and the burger options are always a favourite. Wood burner in the corner, seems very popular with cyclists and walkers given its location!

Vi stannade här för lunch och upptäckte en rad goda och vällagade rätter. Fish and chips fanns i två storlekar - en utmärkt idé. Alla i vårt sällskap var mycket nöjda och både mat och dryck höll hög standard, liksom servicen. Under högsäsong bör man nog boka bord!

It does not happen very often at all but all four of us all found the food, the staff, the building being disabled friendly, fantastic parking on-site, FAULTLESS. This place thanks to all the staff is as good as the 7star Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubi Even the toilets where outstanding. All credit to them all.
