Upon enquiry why the tip prompt was still showing on the payment terminal, I was told that the discretionary (but of course, for groups, automatically added) service charge (still) does not go to employees, despite the venue stating it does on several places. Tips do seem to go to employees. I can't verify it, obviously, but at the very least it's contradicting information. In any case, the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 is in full force since 1 October 2024. Visit was on 9 November 2024.

This is one of my favourite places in Chinatown if you're looking for some mouth watering dimsums or some juice pork belly. The only problem with the restaurant is its service. They have a limited staff so it might be a while before anyone comes to take your order. The food at the end makes it all worth it though.

If you’re looking for Dim sum in chinatown this is the place to go. I’ve tried many places in this area but thia has to be the best so far. Atmosphere is beautiful, service was great and the food was out of the world! Must try the Lotus Sticky Rice. So delicious, 100% this is my first choice every time when I go out for dim sum. Best part is they serve dim sum all day!

Used to be fine, really grim when I returned. Mopping the floor with boiling bleach while we were still eating was possibly the pinnacle of the poor service. Most of the food was cold and when we asked to have it reheated, it returned in the same form.

So disappointed with our trip to Plum Valley last night , every time we visit London as a couple or with friends it’s always been a must do. Last night although the restaurant wasn’t busy the wait for food was toooo long and the order when it arrived was mixed up. One of our starters came with our mains and was luke warm. I don’t know what has changed but it wasn’t anywhere near as good as usual. Sadly it’s time for us to change and try a new place. The staff were lovely as usual which is why we left a tip.

I’m not sure if we will be coming back again. We had to wait nearly an hour for an our first dish - pecking duck, which came in two different portions and was delivered 20 minutes apart. The rest of the food came one dish at a time with the egg fried rice delivered last. The egg fried rice was very dry and the prawns in it tasted not fresh. The service was very slow. The whole lunch took over two hours. We were all very hungry when the food arrived as we had to wait for over an hour

As we were browsing the menus outside the restaurants we were quickly greeted by the hostess who ushered us in. I decided to give it a try as one of my friends used to regularly go there but I will tell her how poor this place is. We were asked to go downstairs and the waiter gave us a table for 2 but as group of 3 people arrived the hostess asked me and my daughter if we could move for them and then told us to move again. At this point I asked should we leave but they said no it was fine. We ordered some dim sum and duck rice. The dim sum was ok but some was clearly frozen stuff which you could buy in the supermarkets, rather than handmade. The duck rice seemed ok at first and then after a couple of pieces we realised it was reheated old pieces dried out to a rocklike texture. At this point I made a compliant, the hostess apologized and said she would report it to the chef. I tried to explain and show her how awful it was, she didn't want to confess or comment but agreed to take it off the bill or give us another portion which I declined. She even said this is a specialist dim sum restaurant, but its ok seemingly to serve shrivelled up duck to me rather than take it off the menu altogether? Honestly what a con, so 3 items of dim sum and tea came to £38 ...what a con! I will never go back.

We came here as a walk-in on a very busy Saturday night. We had to wait a little bit but nothing too bad considering and they kept us updated throughout. It was a mix of vegans and meat eaters in our group, all of us were well catered for! They had delicious sweet and sour vegan chicken pieces, as well as vegan duck in black beans sauce. Portion sizes for the rice are generous so recommend one per couple. Would recommend this place to anyone!

This restaurant was/is great and the food, environment and atmosphere is very good too. I went here to celebrate a birthday and there were 6 of us, four adults and two children, 8 and 4, and it was lovely. The food and the whole place is a tad more posh, for want of a better word, than other places I've been, but I haven't been to many in Chinatown, but anyway, it was a very nice experience and the staff even brought the cake we gave them out with the candles and sung happy birthday and my mum, who it was for, really enjoyed herself and had a nice time. I won't like all the food we had lol but I would definitely recommend going to this place and I would definitely go again, no questions asked, I would even love to try their private karaoke rooms too. Visited here after seeing good reviews online, a party of 7 so they gave us a private room which was exciting, the room did not smell or felt very clean and the food was disappointing, 2 of the dishes: beef stir fry noodles and the fujian fried rice lacking in taste so we couldn't eat it. The food arrived cold, we could see the food sitting on the counter for a while before it was brought to us. I had the fried rice with prawns and eggs and I felt sick a few hours after when I got home, so were other members of our party. Would not visit again food and service was a huge disappointment.

Beware of this place. I ordered fried rice and dumplings and when the receipt came they charged me several pounds more for each item. Luckily I had the menu and showed the waitress where each item was 3 pounds less. She said they raised the prices and didn't update the menu. The rice was bland and the waitress was rude and inattentive. Luckily after showing her where the price was she said she would change it after making excuses but I would recommend not coming here. Its not worth the hassle and the food is average. If you do go anyway, watch the prices because they are trying to scam customers into paying more by charging higher than advertised prices.

I have visited this place two times before and writing a review for the third visit. I wish I would have given it 5 stars. We ordered 4 to 5 things between three people. Crispy duck: was ok, can skip next time. Egg fried rice: the rice was very plain and no herbs or veggies included Pork ribs: this was star of the dinner. Very succulent and rich. Perfect spice level. Malaysia chicken curry: was nice but had too much skin this time. I ended throwing away a lot of skin. Overall the staff was super quick and was attending well. Food arrived in time despite busy Saturday time. One particular staff by name of Mei was very attentive and ensured that our phone and bags were secured as we were dining in open street. Two things that didn’t go to well. 1. I fell ill after eating here. My family members were fine. 2. There is 12.5% discretionary service charge. The waitress would still expect you to put a tip over it, which I had to respectfully refuse. Other than that quite nice. I will possibly try other places before I go back here.

This is a popular Chinese restaurant right in the heart of Chinatown that serves a vast menu of Cantonese food. I’ve been there a number of times before mostly for dim sums. Quality of these tapas like small plates in Plum Valley is probably middle of the road but prices are quite keen. Glutinous rice stands out amongst the others. But the chicken dish cooked with oil & spring onion was rather disappointing. Meat was dry & overcooked. We were pretty disappointed as we had better experience before.

TOURISTS N.B.: You do not have to pay the discretionary 12.5% service charge. In fact, if you happen to find yourself here unfortunately, I strongly recommend you do not pay it. Service was fine. It was quick although nothing to write home about. Menus and the bill were basically thrown to us, and the male waiter upstairs was quite dismissive. So when it came to the service charge, I was not willing to pay an additional 12.5% for service that was subpar at best. When I expressed this to the waiter, he became quite aggressive and indignant, insisting that a service charge be paid unless I expressed a specific reason why I shouldn’t. At one point, he tried to insinuate that the service charge must be paid (because it was for the service?) perhaps thinking we were tourists. Absolutely shocking behavior. To the managers, little embellishments like having the waiter come around and refill water/tea do not make up for a bad attitude. To the waiters, I wonder how many unwitting tourists you have scammed into tipping for your terrible service. Will be sharing my experience on other social media. What a horrible way to end what was until that point, a perfectly fine Chinese meal.

The food is probably some of the best Chinese food I have ever had. Staff have a Customers first policy which is nice. A few things that weren’t quite perfect is we ordered an appetiser which never came, though it was never on the bill. VAT wasn’t on the menu, but was on the receipt as well as a service change. I’m personally not a fan of hidden fees, I appreciate leaving a tip for great service, however, the additional charge as well as adding VAT just doesn’t sit very well with me.

I have been here a few times before and always thought that the staff were friendly. The people at the desk at the front are always nice. The food is alright but overpriced. However, they effectively try to scam you when you go to pay. They automatically add a 12.5% service charge to your bill, even though it says that it is a “discretionary” charge and the menu does NOT include or mention this extra price. This is the UK. Not America. As a customer, you are not under any obligation to pay extra than was agreed. If a restaurant wants to ensure that its waiters are paid more money then they should increase their wages, not try to scam customers. Not only did they automatically add this charge without saying, they REFUSED to remove it. Me and my friends asked politely to pay only a few pounds extra in tips, not the full 12.5% that they had added on. Keep in mind, we were still offering to pay some money in tips, even though there was no reason we should, and did not have to. However, the waiter raised his voice and began arguing with us, repeatedly insisting that we had to pay the full service charge. This is unacceptable. You cannot force people to pay more for something that was initially agreed. Automatically adding 12.5% on and not offering the option to pay the initial price is already very questionable, but repeatedly REFUSING to change it is evil. Furthermore, the waiter was trying to shame us for not wanting to pay the full service charge. You should never shame people for not paying extra than agreed. You don’t know their financial situation. I am sure that the restaurant’s owners have more money than I do. I had liked this restaurant the other times I had visited, when I was lucky to be served by a nice waiter, but this experience has really ruined it for me. DO NOT LET PEOPLE GUILT TRIP INTO GIVING THEM MONEY. If they want to charge more, they need to advertise so on the menu. I am not familiar with British Law but, to be honest, I think their behaviour could even be illegal.

Wow, I wish I’d read the reviews before we decided upon this restaurant. What a waste of money. The food was truly awful. The rice wasn’t fresh, the noodles (chow mein style) were unbelievably strong in flavour, they were so dark with soy that they were deep deep brown in colour and virtually inedible. The soft shell crab in contrast was completely flavourless. The sweet and sour chicken that my son ordered was medicore but was by far the best thing we ordered. The dim sum also didn’t seem to be fresh, just heated up, and tasted similar to what you’d get in a supermarket. I had gristle in mine so that too was left uneaten. The braised tofu was very sloppy. In 21 years together it’s the first time I have ever seen my husband spit something into a napkin. The beer came with a glass hot from the dishwasher. I’m so annoyed with myself £115 down the drain. Never again. Please save yourself the money and choose somewhere else.

Shocking food, cold then microwaved & returned chewy & inedible for us to eat. One very good waitress who tried to rectify mistakes as they happened, but wasn’t able to, as the problems sat with the kitchen, who obviously didn’t care less about unhappy diners. We used to really like this restaurant and come often when in London, but the food has gone completely downhill. No idea what’s happened - maybe a change of management? It’s evident the kitchen is in chaos, as they cannot cook for 2 people wanting to eat at the same time, or get food out hot. Meals were delivered 15 minutes apart and only then after chasing our order up numerous times with the waiting staff. We sat outside on the packed terrace, in the sunshine. Plum Valley have a prime spot in Chinatown. However, when trying to pay before leaving, this proved almost impossible. They was no member of staff to be found. It then transpired about 6 members of staff were all sat together, inside, eating their own meals - leaving nobody to attend to all the full tables outside, plus those diners inside. Unbelievable. The salt and pepper chicken was lots of fried batter with salt and pepper seasoning with hardly any chicken in. The ribs were ok. Main courses were tasty but the duck and chicken in them wasn't nice. The duck was just big thick slices of duck and so so greasy that it made me feel unwell. The waiter was kind though and removed it from the bill. Would not go back.

Best chinese food I’ve ever had, it was amazing, Staff we so lovely, we were a little late for our booking but still accommodated, even took the time to speak to us about a show we had just been to see as they see our programme. Will definitely be back, thank you for the lovely food :)

food was disappointing. Beef and prawns overcooked. Duck was cold and service slow

The food here is decently executed by London standards (which are not as high as in Toronto). Dim sum dishes generally good as was the mango dessert. The service however is not attentive and the atmosphere is a bit chaotic. Probably a beter experience on the main flor as opposed to upstairs.

The food was good. My only comment is that the bill came with a service charge included (no problem) but when I went to pay with my card, the machine showed the total (including service charge) but with the screen asking me if I wanted to pay a service charge. If I had chosen this, I would have ended up paying the 12.5% + an additional % of my choice. This is misleading. If I hadn’t double checked, I would have double paid.

I love this place, I hope the standards remain high. They do dim sums until 10pm which is amazing!

One of the best Chinese meals I've had in a long time. Service, food and ambience was excellent. Would definitely come back again.

Food was good, service was good. They bought out our food kind of fast but made a minor mistake with two of the same dishes so that took a bit longer to come back out but would definitely recommend and will be back!

Smart looking restaurant in the heart of China Town. The vegetarian selection was limited despite previous reviews stating they were plentiful. Nevertheless the food was generally of a good standard. The spring rolls were crispy and flavourful whilst the dumplings were vibrantly coloured with delicate outer layers. The Kung Po mock chicken had a luminous red colour and was a sticky, sweet heaven. Truly dish of the day. The vegetarian lettuce wraps were also surprisingly tasty with an assortment of fresh, crunchy vegetables being enclosed within crisp lettuce alongside sweet plum sauce. However, the chilli and garlic tofu and salt and chilli mock chicken dishes were bland and chewy. Service was abrupt and bordering on rude. It was also rushed and it seemed like too much effort to provide explanations of the dishes. Seating was also cramped with 10 people being squeezed onto a round table fit for 6 people and this detracted from the overall experience.

Food was really nice. The dim sum ticked all the boxes. However the staff don't want to be there. They throw food on the table, make you fill your own doggy bag and want you out ASAP. A real shame

I have been there many times. The food has become very poor quality recently. The chef is rude, asked not to take more than one from Teppanyaki, and kept us await for 20 minutes for a small piece of chewy stake. It is better to spend money on a restaurant. Please do go and waste money.

El precio está "bien", pero no la comida y el personal. La comida es simplemente asquerosa y si quieres probar algo chino asqueroso, continúa.

Phoned at 11.55am yesterday to check availability for lunch on the same day .I was informed they could accommodate a table for two at midday (so 5 minutes away ) I politely said we would need a little time to get there and would arrive in less than 30 mins but I was informed if I couldn’t get there within 15 minutes I could not have the table !!I have never experienced anything quite like it and absolutely appalling customer service !Having since read many of the poor reviews they obviously did us a favour and we ended up enjoying a fabulous lunch at the OWO !Hospitality is supposed to be about accommodating guests requests the best way possible but not here!!They obviously don’t want or need the business and I certainly won’t ever be spending my hard earned money at any Peninsular Hotel if this is the way they treat there customers !!! Good day !

The food was fantastic, but the service was awful but the service was lacking. The waitress seemed handling too many tables, so we had to ask several times for water, chopsticks. Despite the great food, the inattentive service made the experience less enjoyable.
