The building is characterful. The menu is the standard Pizza Express. You know what you are getting. It is good pizza. Side salads good too.

Were here, 5 people, around 4pm. Were told couldn’t get table before 7pm. The restaurant was completely empty! Don’t know what that was about, but the guy wasn’t interested in having us as customers.

This restaurant was poorly staffed when we visited with only one server. He was knowledgeable about the menu with regard to my special dietary requirements. The problem was the meal. There was little on the menu that I could eat and so ordered a gluten free, vegan pasta dish. There was a big bowl of pasta but It wasn’t well cooked. Some of the pasta was almost raw. There was very little sauce and it was barely warm. It was very unpleasant. My husband ordered a vegan dish which was hot and enjoyable but he had half eaten it before his dough sticks arrived. The whole experience was not enjoyable. I won’t return to Pizza Express.

The food is cold, and the wait was too long. I could not contact the courier, and he drove in the opposite direction to my location once he had picked up my food. I want a refund.

Visited as a treat due to getting a voucher. The service was good and we had our food order taken swiftly. The pizza was delicious and had a crispy base. I would definitely have that pizza again. It was a little on the expensive side in my opinion but still good.

I paid for extra chicken and olives. There weren’t any extra - I had 6 olives The bread sticks were burnt. Awful

Went to Durham pizza express. Adam was great , friendly and made our dining a little bit extra. Lovely place We sat at the window and enjoyed the show.

Lovely experience all around. In Darlington, we don't have a Pizza Express - we have only a Domino's, Papa John's and a few other Kebab/semi-pizzeria places, with only a couple of high quality pizza places. This was a breath of fresh air - the cheese was soft and stringy, the crust was light and chewy, and the dough balls were fantastic, with the inclusion of an actual tub of garlic butter novel, though very heavy. I wish I could go there again, but I live too far away. The customer service was wonderful - extremely prompt response, service with a smile and telling me it was with "chef's compliments", I was very flattered. If there is one qualm I have, it is that I wish the pizza was bigger.

Ordered food at 5:30pm and food didn't arrive till 8pm.. the time was originally to be delivered at 6:20 and kept getting pushed back. On top of that food arrived absolutely freezing!

Visited on a Thursday lunchtime in half term. Was only a few tables occupied. Service was average. Given. Choice of two tables near each other. I imagine when it’s busy it would be very impersonal as tables are very close to one another. We ordered the garlic bread with cheese as one of our starters, we intended to share this but it was so small it wouldn’t fill a toddler, I would probably avoid this choice I have never had a garlic bread as small. Ordered the lemon chicken wings also but they had no taste and were extremely greasy. Mains I ordered a large Romano style pepperoni- it was extremely thin and again not filling. When we left my daughter went to get a desert elsewhere as was still hungry not what you would expect after a 2 course lunch.

This was far from restaurant quality food. The toppings were scarce and had very little flavour. The food took a surprisingly long time to reach us once dispatched, 20 minutes to travel 3 miles) and was cold when it arrived. The mushroom pizza appeard to have one 1 mushroom on it and the etna had aproximately 10% topping coverage. Very disappointing. Would not order again.

Lunch today at pizza express in Durham City. Pizzas were absoloutly amazing. Great service . Manager very friendly and professional. The building is beautiful. Will be returning. Thank you.

Food was over an hour late and when it arrived was stone cold

Most of the food cold, the chicken gave a lot to be desired, very poor quality not breaded on all sides. I couldn’t actually tell what it was at first. Also was unevenly cooked kind of burnt on some edges and then tasted just as terrible as it appeared.

The pasta and chicken were undercooked and were delivered cold. The bruschetta had an insane amount of pesto poured over it and the garlic butter dough balls were delivered with no garlic butter.

Ordered at 18.10. Rang restaurant after 2 changes to delivery time. Pizzas were obviously ready but was advised just eat didn’t have many drivers. Took 1 hour 45 minutes to come - stone cold. Had to heat up in oven, making them dry and brittle. Dreadful just eat experience!

The pizza base was very thin and cold and the starter was cold too. We ordered before and it was ok.

Had a meal with my sister during my visit to Durham centre and we had the pleasure of having Phoebe as our assistant. She was cheerful and chatty and really made the experience thoroughly enjoyable. Great work Pizza Express for finding brilliant staff. It makes for a more special experience, will definitely recommend to others🙏🏼

I came into this particular Pizza Express looking for part-time work - but figured I’d try the food and service first and I’m glad I did. The Fiorentina pizza was remarkable as usual - a great classic! HOWEVER. The service was particularly concerning. The waiter initially was rather pleasant - but I had to walk up to the desk to give my order as he seemed to be having a little snooze behind the bar; rather dangerously he didn’t ask about allergies (I have a few lethal ones… and having worked FOH before I’m pretty sure you always ask!); and finally, the chefs really seemed to dislike him since they kept shouting “service” and he wouldn’t come… The sauce that came with the polenta chips was also something that had more in common with drain cleaner than the tomato/basil it was supposedly made of! Extremely bitter, almost an emetic, looked and tasted like liquefied moss. Not to mention how the chips seemed to be microwaved (and weren’t cooked at all - really mushy!). Probably not going to apply for work here… unless they seriously improve the quality and care put into their restaurant service!

On that chilly September evening, my wife and I stumbled upon Pizza Express in Durham City Centre She welcomes us with a smile that burned brighter than a thousand suns She showed us to our seats and bedazzled us with her encyclopedic knowledge of pizza and pasta dishes She already knew our order, her warm eyes gazed into my soul and she read me like a book She brought the pizzas to our table with the elegance of an Olympic skater, leaving us speechless And the food was incredible, my wife's pizza was so good it saved our marriage As the restaurant filled up, any normal person might have succumbed to anxiety, but not our Phoebe She handled the chaos with bullet-proof confidence When she handed me the bill, I felt compelled to ask how we could repay her for her god-tier skills Her request? A humble review Well, here it is, Phoebe And to the powers that be at Pizza Express, I implore you to promote this pizza prophet and give her a salary that matches her superhuman talents We are unworthy of Phoebe's greatness!

The pizza was lovely, although I found the base to be very thin, but the size of the pizza kept it filling. It cost around £15-17 for one pizza which was far too overpriced. In total for two pizzas, with VAT, and a tip, and £12.80 off through the app, it still cost us £31.81. Much too expensive, nice for a treat but won’t be going back anytime soon.

Asked for a Table for two, was told the table nearest the door was the only they had so we accepted it. Two minutes later another couple came in and were directed To a really lovely placed table, same thing happened a few minutes later, yet nobody had left in that time. The waiter walked past several times us and simply ignored us. I asked if we could order too which he barked ‘two minutes! Two minutes! He then came to the table NEXT to us and took their order. Rubbish service-average food if it’s the same as other pizza express resistant-and disgusting behaviour. NEVER AGAIN-AVOID

I would just like to say what a pleasure it is to visit Pizza Express in Durham City. The service is always brilliant with very friendly, helpful staff. The food is the best I have had in any Pizza Express, especially the Calimari. Special shout out to Andrew who served us the past few times.

The food was pretty disappointing. It's difficult to do pizza badly but mine seemed to be a little undercooked. It wasn't busy so no need to rush food prep. Another really annoying thing is the different menus. The one posted outside listed prices for standard pizzas. Once you are inside the menu lists the more expensive pizzas.

My husband is quite keen on Pizza Express and I have something against it (can't remember why) but we went today and it was very nice! Staff were polite and the food was lovely. The restaurant is a bit tired but it has been there a while.

Fantastic service from Ewelina! Drinks, starters, mains and deserts arrived super quick and everything was absolutly delicious!! We came in with 5 kids so really hopped our dinning would be as smooth as possible and it really was! We really enjoyed it and the waitress made us feel very welcomed and relaxed. Thank you

First time coming here and I will definitely return! The place is so clean, the service is impeccable. The food is absolutely beautiful too, not to forget it’s a child friendly place too! My 2 year old son had a pizza and he’s usually very fussy, he ate more than half🥳 Price is reasonable for what you get. Can’t fault the place.

Nice waiters but poor food/drink. Sicilian lemonade was weak and tasted watered down. The dough balls were too airy and unlike any other plate of dough balls I have had at Pizza Express. I ordered the Fiorentina pizza, but the egg has been cooked through and the pizza lacked any flavour. Disappointed.

Service was good but pizza express have clearly given up on their 'classic' bases. I had a margarita and it was soggy, sad and tastless, with one basil leaf in the middle, no other seasoning. One of the worst pizzas I'd had in some time.

Food was 1.5 hours late, with no communication from the restaurant. Tried to call, but was unable to get through. Food was ok, but barely warm when it arrived, and the toppings on the pizza had all slid to one side. I'd eat here in person, but wouldn't recommend a takeaway from them.

We're fans of Pizza Express as a chain, but this location needs some investment. Small and uninspiring space. Plus you'd run out of pasta by 6pm on a Saturday evening! Staff were good so come on Pizza Express, find a new venue in Durham and make it shine.

Called in one evening mid-week; six of us including one gluten-free and one vegan and all catered for. The service was friendly and helpful. The food, cooked by Jamie, was delicious. Best pizzas we have had for a long time. Good value, good experience and fantastic food. We had a great evening.

Had a meal here as visiting Durham: initially it was a nice experience but then the waitress bought out our pizzas before we had finished our staters, that to me is a no no. The prawns were lovely but the pizzas were not. How can they be so different from each pizza Express? Staff had forced smiles which changed as soon as they moved away. We won’t visit this particular one again.

Typical pizza express. Nothing changed. Flavoursome pizzas good lasagne and pasta, just felt rushed on a quite Tuesday evening. Plus side we had tesco points and had 45 quid off

This pizza Express is right in the heart of the old town so good location and handy for visitors. We booked a table just after lockdown was lifted and felt they’d got it pretty much right. Tables a good distance apart, staff in face coverings, drinks and food delivered by tray to the end of your table, menu online, or disposable paper one available.There was still a good atmosphere and the place was fairly busy. Pizza and pasta were both very tasty, as was the sweet.Decent prices, nice staff!

Lovely place. I got talking to my old friend Dominic Cummings who told me it was a favourite for Prince Andrew. I don’t know why but he asked me Nat to mention to anyone he was there. As he left I couldn’t help but notice his car half parked on top of a waste bin, he mentioned something about wonky eyesight, I told it maybe it would have been better if he’d gone to SpecSavers.

Arrived in Durham with a hungry and tired seven year old.Came across good old Pizza Express and knew we should be ok for kids menu.Seated really quickly, colouring stuff given to keep hungry child entertained. We ordered food arrived, service was great no complaints at all.

Durham..a lovely city made special by the Art, Culture and History. I know there are quality food establishments that compliment the above. However this Pizza Express does not !! Be warned ! The food we had was sufficient and did what was necessary to quell the rising roar of hungry tummys but unfortunately they were served with a large side of attitude. The server was very 'put out' shown via being brusk in speaking tone that we did not order how she wanted us to. We only wanted a couple of dishes to share NOT individual dishes for each person. My partner works for the NHS and does receive discounts at numerous restaurants but on enquiry we were told quite harshly that NO WE DO NOT ! On asking a Manager who did the right thing by looking into her data we were told then, Sorry but we do not. After leaving, On further investigation they no longer do but..let's not take away the point that a nice apology of no we don't anymore would have been very much appreciated. I am sure Durham has educational venues that teach Customer Service. Maybe this venue should utilise that option. Anyway, we paid but left no gratuity and am writing this to ensure future users wear a combat jacket if choosing this place to eat.

A bit slow to receive our pizza but we didn’t have a booking and it was a busy Saturday night so it was to be expected. I did get one pizza very quickly but it was whisked away again as it wasn’t meant for me! The food was really nice and the servers were polite and friendly even though they never seemed to have time to draw breath.

There are a lot of poor reviews about this place at the moment. I have been going to this PE for many years and out of all of them it is always my favourite. I love the small, cosy atmosphere of it. They've thankfully improved the door heater as the door opens into the restaurant and can be cold! The place is small, noisy and loud if it is busy and is quite tightly packed in, but for me retains all the things that PE was about when it launched. There is one waitress who has worked there for many years who is rather loud and in your face, and whilst serving you will be watching three other tables but I always have great food and it is fun! Yes it is not the laid back, wooden and low lighting kind of place that ASK tries to be, it is more brash, loud and busy but I like that. Each to their own.

Been going to various pizza express restaurants over the years and thought this would be the same as all the others; good food, good service and in a nice setting. Except this particular restaurant was none of these. Not sure what's gone on but somebody needs their butt kicking to make this place work. Service very slow and snooty, food slow and a bit tasteless. Had to pay on the online app as the waitress seemed to have forgotten about us. All in all poor and disappointing for a pizza express (which i usually really enjoy)

The staff were very pleasant. Only one other table occupied and we had to wait 40 minutes for 3 pizzas and 2 portions of chips. I say chips but not what we know as chips. Seemed like mash potato with outer coating and cheese on them. Extremely odd. The pizzas were moderate. The bill came to £52.00 without drinks. None of us were impressed with Pizza Express and won’t be returning.

It was really cold when we visited, mainly because we knew what the food is like and did6want to wander around. As usual it was consistent with other pizza Express which we have visited. Quick efficient service. Our pizza and salad was lovely.

We were disappointed from the start Sat right next to the stairs leading to the toilet even tho there was plenty of other tables available. Service was slow and unhelpful and the food offers were not compatible even though we had used them before at a different pizza express ... generally was a forgettable experience.. food was fine I guess but we were already eating to leave.

Visited with 3 generations of family.Crayons and colouring for the grand children,Great...Drinks for the adults ,Great...Menu choices and questions dealt with,Great......what more can you ask for .The staff were attentive and the price was reasonable AFTER taking off vouchers.

We needed to eat quickly before catching a train and realised that we could have a 'two main courses for £10 deal'. On this basis, it couldn't be faulted. The pizzas were served quickly and they were piping hot, while the waiter was friendly. Excellent value!
