Phoenix Chinese in North Down

My family has been ordering from Phoenix for at least 10 years. We will never order again. Recently the food has not been up to standard and today it was so disappointing. It is sad that such a well established restaurant has come to this.

Food was delicious. A bit outdated as far as the decor was concerned and a tad run down. We where seated at the window and it was very cold as there was no double glazing. The waitress was very friendly and chatty recommended where we could Go for a cosy drink. Outstanding value for money.

Title says it all . Come on Sally you can do better . Crispy chicken was only batter. Waste of money.

When going here I prefer to order appetisers, they are large portions and nice with chicken curry. Very cheap , service is always good, although been before in the past and food hasn’t been the best although last time was great.

The Phoenix is great if all you want is some decent food and a night out without breaking the bank. Service is OK, maybe not the fastest in the world, but the staff are friendly. We went with my son and his girlfriend and had a very good meal. He had satay chicken skewers (good), his girlfriend had spring rolls (OK), my wife had chicken noodle soup (tasty, though would have liked it thinner) and I had smoked chicken in spring onion and ginger (very good). For mains we had garlic chilli chicken (very good), chicken curry (a bit on the mild side, but OK), lamb in spring onion and ginger (very good) and sizzling beef satay (excellent). The ginger and spring onion dishes (my starter and my wife's main) tasted particularly fresh. We finished with coffees. It's not fine dining and the decor won't win any prizes, nevertheless an enjoyable night out.

I have attended the Phoenix many times over a number of years, and it isn’t nice to see a place you once enjoyed not maintaining a standard they once had. Each time I go I feel the food declines in taste and the customer service declines further along with it, but I always try and balance things out and give them a chance. Tonight I convinced a friend to go here for a change from the usual place we go, and I was embarrassed I had recommended it. Food was just about eatable, mainly due to the chicken dishes in both the starter and main course having a chewy unpleasant taste to it. Our sides of rice and chips were brought out with a long wait before our main dishes were brought out to go with it. As for service, there was a lovely girl on who seemed to be running around doing most things and trying her best with the handful of people dining and phone orders. Around 6 people dining in total. Whilst the owner who seemed to have a bit of an attitude, served the food and was working the kitchen also. The owner made us feel unwelcome, and came across very unpleasant, making the atmosphere uncomfortable. No pleasantries, conversation or even a smile the entire time. When bringing out the dishes mumbled the names at us and when I said ‘yes’ for the dish that wasn’t mine but quickly corrected myself, the owner rolled her eyes like I was an inconvenience. Between the starter and mains she also lifted the dish still containing a cracker, asking were we done whilst walking away with it, not giving us a chance to say we were intending to order more. No dessert offered either that comes with the high tea, although by that stage we were ready to go. On our way out whilst paying we could hear a phone-call booking being taken by the owner where again politeness seemed to be a thing of the past. Shocking all in all at a time when custom can be hard to achieve and maintain, but it didn’t come across that anyone was worried about that. Can safely say my friend and myself will not be back.

Called in tonight with the family for the first time not knowing what to expect have to say had a great meal the food and service where great..Food was served fresh and hot and young guy serving us was very friendly and polite ..we ordered salted chilli chicken to share for starter then honey chilli chicken with cashew nuts and sweet and sour chicken hong kong style and a kids meal all where beautiful....decor a bit tired and dated but heyho not there to look at decor more interested in food and service...its also BYO for only £2.50 per couple or also its licensed and has winelist etc ...will defo be returning 👍😃

Phoned to order food for collection.Asked how much food would be when calling for it. Was asked to hold on which ended up being 7mins on hold and noone came back.Then had to spend time trying to call back to see if order was placed and how much again. On collecting order my other half was collecting,was told no spring rolls left.My partner asked to order sesame toast and was told that would take to long,and the other food we ordered would be cold. I did call to try and complain,got no apology and was hung up on. Communication and customer service disgraceful. If only I had been told at time of ordering no spring rolls and also the fact I gave a second chance of being hung up on placing order. Takes nothing in this world to say please and thank you to a customer and treat them the way you would like to be treated when ordering food. Will not be back.

my family ordered delivery like we've done for a long time, they forgot a chip with one of the meals and when questioned about it over the phone they denied we ordered it when we clearly did and kept claiming we were wrong while being continually cheeky over the phone. in the end nothing was done about it we just had to hang up angrily. will never go back

This is first I’ve ordered from Phoenix ordered the shredded chicken starter and then the chicken curry Starter was magnificent flavours were astounding and portion size was great To top of whole meal the curry was on the same level of standard Highly recommend this place

Booked in for a family meal for 6 people. Shown to a table promptly but had to wait a few minutes for our drink order to be taken. Ordered food and sat for an hour. Eventually left without eating. Bad enough having to wait so long but when other people who arrived later were served first it is completely unacceptable. Won’t be back in a hurry and we used to love this place... Simply atrocious!

This is one of Bangor's most established Chinese restaurants having a very extensive menu and very friendly staff. It is not very fancy but our family always enjoy a night out at the Phoenix. Portion sizes are large and they have various types of tables including a large circular one with a rotating centre which is great for sharing.

Service always welcoming and fast, bring your own keeps the price down and the food is fantastic. They will cook dishes for you that are not on the menu, and will change ingredients to your taste without any difficulty Prices are very good and portions are generous - carry out service is also quick and tasty

Despite the restaurant being virtually empty (only 2 other tables were occupied with a total of 7 customers including me and my guest), the service was ridiculously slow and they managed to get our drink order (a pint of lager and glass of coke) wrong twice. When the food eventually arrived the portions were large but, unfortunately, it tasted awful. The rubbery chicken was practically inedible. I definitely won't be back.

Came for tea with my daughter recently. I had spring rolls and she had noodle soup. Spring rolls were sodden with grease and oil. Impossible to eat. I pushed my fork against one of them and the oil squirted out. Waitress asked why I didn't eat them and I told her the truth. She offered me more but I refused. My daughter said the noodle soup was just ok but she wouldn't order it again. My main was a sizzling beef in black bean sauce with green pepper. This was tasty although the sauce must have been thickened with something as it was far too thick and solidified very quick. My daughter had bread-crumbed chicken and it was deep-fried with oyster sauce on the top. She enjoyed it.My last visit here was quite a few years ago and it was a really smart restaurant. I think the place needs a total revamp and the sticky carpets replaced along with the windows that seemingly don't close!Waitresses were overworked but coped with all the tables.Personally I wouldn't return.

Food here is unreal, very well priced and good sized portions, every time I go here how ever I can see the hearts in Sallys eyes when shes looking at me, Im a married man! I just want to sit in and enjoy my food. I recommend the salted chilli chicken for starters and maybe satay or curry or main. I am giving this a 5 stars because A) Its awesome and B) I dont want to make Sally angry, nobody wants to see Sallys angry side!

Two friends and myself went lasr night for hogh tea. Very disappointed. We had to keep our coats on during the meal as the restruant was freezing. Even the owner had her coat on. We also felt the waiter was rushing us as was taking plates away before we had finished each course. We wont be back.

We have been coming here for years to the restaurant and for takeaway food and the quality has never faltered. The restaurant could probably do with being spruced up a bit but this doesn't take away from the quality of the food. Staff are very friendly and accommodating and we have also had a relaxing meal, where you do don't feel pressured to rush. It is very reasonably priced often with a number of offers available. I would highly recommend this restaurant and takeaway.

We've been coming to the Phoenix for years, wouldn't go anywhere else for delicious Chinese. Sally & her team are so friendly and welcoming. They make you feel like family and the food is simply fantastic, lovely chicken satay skewers are my favourite also shredded chicken in garlic chilli. Everything is first rate. Complimentary prawn crackers. Won't be going anywhere else , ever.

Awful!!!!! Got chicken and black bean with no green pepper or mushrooms and gave me beef! Phoned and asked for a replacement and they asked for the old one back!!!!! I then get the new one with mushrooms in it!! Poor poor service ! Will NOT be back!

Tried to order a takeaway from here but was waiting for someone to pick up the phone for a few minutes When I arrived to collect, there was only one lady running round doing everything looking awfully stressed ! When I asked her where the owner was her reply was "don't know, probably shopping or sleeping" Food was lukewarm and bland nothing special really This place would probably be nicer if the owner invested in a few more workers

Ordered honey chilli chicken with fried rice and chips the chicken was stringy the sauce was pure sour and vinegar the rice was so dry and all clumped together and the chips tasted refried !!

We ate here recently and will definitely be back.The food was lovely and incredible value. Early bird menu which is until 9 pm , even on a Saturday night, is £11 for 3 courses.The choice was very good on this deal. We couldn't finish ours, simply because of the quantity, not the quality.The service was excellent and this is a long standing family run business. It shows. Friendly and very welcoming.I wanted to give 5 stars but the only reason I didn't was the place could do with a bit of a lift decor wise. A bit tired looking.That won't stop us going back though or recommending it to others. Although we had the early bird deal this time there was also huge selection on the main menu. In short...great food...great service... Great value.

This is a well established Chinese restaurant serving large choice of food. It's up-stairs so limited access. Gets busy at weekends so book. Good car park nearby.

This restaurant is by far the best Asian food ever created. Both in the restaurant and take away the quality is always the best. The ingredients are of the best and freshest you will find and I think that's what makes it stand out from the rest. I've been eating here for a long time and would not even contemplate anywhere else. On the menu I chop and change but everytime I order no matter what I order it's always perfectly cooked and I never stick to the same thing because it's all delicious! Trust me!

I love a visit to the Phoenix Chinese in Bangor and why wouldn't anybody that loves Chinese? At lunch time its only £7 for a 3 course dinner and £11 at night time. The food aint bad at all and is actually very nice, the problem here comes with the owner and as a regular eater I am not being harsh in any way. I had heard from different sources that the owner can be quite rude at times, the first time I encountered an iteration with the owner was one night after I finished my main meal I asked her could she put my cheesecake in a carton for me to take home where to my shock she just said no to my face and kept looking without any further comment, I said ok why is that to which she replied eat it here or do without. I dont see what the huge problem is with putting what I was paying for into a small carton considering the fact it is also a take out. Another bad point is the fact the place has the atmosphere of Clarks funeral home and is always freezing as the heating is never switched on so wear a coat if heading in winter. Despite what I said above remember that the food is actually decent and IMO well priced. I have rated this 3 stars and I give the stars based on the fact the food is actually good, everything else is poor, if this place was re-decorated , warm and the staff learned how to be friendly this would get the full 5 star bramble approved sticker however I have no hope for this happening any time soon. I have heard people say they wouldn't go here because of the staff (when I say staff I mean Sally) It really is a pitty as this place could be so much better.

Love the Phoenix. We've been coming here for years and just love the food here and the really friendly service. All the staff greet you like you are one of the family. Wouldn't even consider going anywhere else.

It was good, not great. Food was hot when it arrived. The lady on the phone helped with suggestions and was very pleasant. Their was a lot of food, just not great food.

My family had been going here for a couple of years now and I decided to join them last Wednesday. We were met by the owner who welcomed us to our table near the fish tank, which was great for the kids. The waitresses were warm and friendly to us and incredible attentive. And the food was beyond average standards of typical chinese food.After the great start to the night I decided to inquire about the review that I read before we got to the restaurant (to get a feel for the place before we arrived) regarding the tips situation. I spoke with the female waitress (privately, away from the owner just to be sure) and it turns out that the claim made on this website was bogus, the tips do indeed go towards each member of staff, not just to the owner.So just a heads up for those who read reviews before heading to the restaurant (like me).

Arrived for lunch today @1.25 with my daughter to be greeted by "the owner " sitting in an empty resturant on a laptop...lunch hours state 12 - 2pm. When asked if we could have lunch we were responded with a "mmm what time is it....okay then!! We close at 2pm" and a clearly unfriendly manager who was clearly unhappy to have custom...meanwhile waitress runs out of kitchen looking at us as if to say not another customer!!!...we felt unwelcome and uncomfortable...lunch states 12 to 2pm so what was the issue....manager/owner needs to learn how to treat her customers....will not be back

Great food and great service. However owner bit rude, our waiter was lovely but the tips don't go to waiter? The owner keeps them. Surely you are tipping the service and not the owner. Other than that it was good

Ate here last night. I was looked after by the owners daughter who was absolutely charming. Good Northern Irish twang to her accent:). For the first time in 40 + years I asked for recommendations. The food she suggested was wonderful. I was late ( ish) on a quiet night but I wasn't rushed . I will deffo return.

Have been going to this restaurant for several years now and have never been disappointed. The staff are friendly especially those who have been there for a while their customer skills are second to none. The food is good and we have been to many restaurants across the globe and this one fares well.

My family and I decided on this restaurant after hearing great reviews from friends who had a big hen party in the phoenix. The food- was amazing standards for a chinese restaurant, much fancier (presentation wise) and much tastier than any chinese we've had, and we go to a lot of chinese's in Northern ireland. The service- was great, although it seems they are a little short staffed so patience is needed at some points but for the most part the service was incredible for the circumstances, never had to wait long for drinks or the food. Staff were attentive as can be and were a great addition to the standards of the restaurant. They even helped out with the little ones and kept the fussy toddlers happy- great great customer service points there. Very family friendly environment and I've seen lots of couples so it's really an all rounded environment. Must try the takeout and delivery service, also heard great things about the quality of food and the quick timing of deliveries and collections.Definitely visiting the phoenix again!!!

My friends and I popped by to the phoenix for a girls night out and the service was just great. Nice chatty people who all made us feel very welcome. The decor isn't as bad as what some people have claimed it to be on the internet, its actually quite refreshing as its not flashy and all in your face when you're trying to have a nice relaxing dinner. The food was great for what we paid for, the £11 high tea dinner was superb, portions were huge and we even had to take some of it home because it was just too good to let it go to waste.Definitely taking my family there for some good grub next!

Like to use this restaurant at lunchtimes occasionally as my wife and two grandsons did on Thursday 2nd July to celebrate a birthday - nice food and cheap too!Oh dear. Talk about a grumpy server and we were the only ones in the place.Felt like we were interrupting the peace and if that's the case then don't open.Be a while before we're back.

Staff very welcoming and friendly, no long waits between courses, food varies from good to great. Decor OK if not particularly modern, decent ambience, usually very busy on a Saturday (my wife told me that - she's a frequent Saturday visitor on girly nights out). You can bring your own drinks for a small corkage charge or buy from the bar at reasonable prices. Meal deals are very well priced - I really should come here more often.The restaurant is upstairs so not suitable for all visitors, but other than that there's not much to find fault with.

The food first of all exceeds the usual expectations of chinese food, not only is there a more extensive list of different styles and cuisine but the more known dishes are done superbly in the chef's own original style. Honestly.. it's the best curry in Bangor and maybe even Northern Ireland!The staff are welcoming and attentive, nothing much more to say than that!Amazing prices and deals: the £11 restaurant set menu and the £6 take away meal deal are perfect for me and my family (the kids like a bit of everything but can afford it with this all in one box meal deal!)Definitely recommend to anyone who pops by to Bangor!!!!!

Visited this place because we fancied a change and we have tried the other Chinese restaurants in Bangor, which are all awful. Well, this was no better. Usual greasy starters and over-thickened, tasteless sauces on the mains. Couldn't eat the chicken in a Szechuan sauce because it was so insipid. The staff were slow and vague. The restaurant itself is very tired and drab, with a real look of decay. A very depressing room with no joy in it. The chef and staff are clearly going through the motions churning out barely edible food in the same way as the vast majority of restaurants in Bangor. Anyone can cook better at home. Even the ready meals in supermarkets are better than this. You can't get a decent Chinese meal outside Belfast in NI (and even then only a few places are worth making the trip). Save your money and go to the supermarket.

We just love a mid week visit here with a few bottles of bring your own. Great food matched by great service and all at a reasonable price. 😄

Sally and her people are the nicest you could hope for in any restaurant, whether Chinese or otherwise. Nothing is too much trouble. The food is excellent, whether sit-in or takeaway. It is our favourite and has been for many years. Recommended plus

We've been going to this restaurant for 20 years - in that time so many places have come and gone but the Phoenix has always been there, serving good Chinese food to Bangors population. It won't win any fine dining awards but the portion sizes are great, the foods piping hot and the service is consistently high. Would recommend.

The Phoenix in Bangor is my fav chinese. I always visit this place for a sit down meal or a carry out.The decor is not the smartest but dont let that put you off. Food is always good and service quite quick. Staff are always friendly and will take a photo of your group should you desire.I normally order a beef curry and you can ask for it to spiced up hotter should you desire.Never really had a bad meal here.

When in Bangor at lunchtime or early evening and fancy that little oriental treat then turn into Market Street and find the Phoenix.It's up one flight of stairs at the Asda car park end of the street.Great Cantonese, Thai dishes avaiable served by attentive and smiling staff.Driinks are priced well and deals at lunch and the buffet will satisfy the budget conscious.All the time you can people watch from your first floor window seats.

Been here a few times over the years and its always been alright. Menu has improved and food is always good. Staff are friendly, helpful and efficient.But it lacks style and ambience. Needs redecorating and I do wish they would replace that carpet.There is a bump halfway along and I always trip on it.

We have been going to this restaurant for many years. Sally the owner always makes you very welcome. The décor could do with a change and a sprucing up however the food has always been good and I think over the past year has got even better. It is always well presented and plenty of it. It is upstairs which can be difficult for people with disabilities. It is also a restaurant that locals would know about but if you were looking for a Chinese restaurant it could be missed. Well worth a visit.
