Pho Me in North Hertfordshire

Gem of a place! I had a hankering for noodles after a morning shopping and a local cafe recommended Pho. The waiter couldn’t have been more helpful, explaining my options. My soup arrived incredibly quickly and was full of fresh ingredients, including extra vegetables as I’d requested. I was impressed he checked I was ok with a beef broth since I ordered tofu. Great view over the market square. Very happy!

You won't stumble upon this restaurant, but it's worth seeking out for a casual meal. It's up a narrow flight of stairs beside a key cutting shop in Market Place, right in the town centre. It's relatively new (opened April 2022) and on the Saturday night we visited it wasn't very busy. However Pho Me certainly deserves to be sampled if you like authentic Vietnamese food. The menu is short, but we've been twice in the last few weeks and their freshly prepared noodle and rice dishes won't break the bank. The crispy pork spring rolls are wonderful. Service could be swifter but there's a nice view of Market Place from the windows and it's a pleasant place to sit and chat while you work up an appetite for what's to come. Do give this restaurant a try. We'll definitely be back.

Visiting for the first time to hitchin we visited Pho me after seeing it advertised in the town square. Although it was empty we wondered why it was as the menu looked really appetising. We both ordered their pho bowls, one spicy and one not spicy and some gluten free pork spring rolls. They came very quickly and were all very delicious especially the pork spring rolls which I hadn’t had for a long time, as no where does them gluten free! Shall definitely be revisiting again .

Visiting with a friend. Food was delicious. First time I have eaten there..Service was a little slow but we didn’t mind as it was a Saturday night and we’d expect a place to be busy. Friendly staff too which is always a bonus! Definitely be coming back soon!

Sadly our meal was a disappointment. There were only two other people in the restaurant so the waiter was not rushed off his feet, however, he failed to clear a recently occupied table and our table was far from clean. We attempted to wipe the oily sticky surface ourselves but had to call him over for a proper clean. When he came over, he gave half the table a cursory wipe with a smelly cloth and didn't bother to clean the sauce lids which were grubby and sticky. Our order took some time to arrive which would not have mattered if it was worth the wait, but it wasn't. The food was overcooked, oily and very basic. I definitely will not be going to this restaurant again.

It isn't good to leave a bad review of a local business but feel its necessary in this case. 3 of us arrived at just before 8pm tonight. Was only a handful of customers there (approx 6 people out of max covers of around 32+). Firstly but perhaps least importantly, staff were all wearing white polo t-shirts unironed and creased, doesn't reflect well on a place or brand, but hey ho if the food is good who cares right (apart from the owners)? Ordered veg spring rolls for starters. For mains a beef salad, bun hue mushroom/tofu and a baguette. Beef salad arrived first (a main) followed 10 minutes later by the starter, followed by another main 20 mins later and the other main 5 minutes later. So obviously we all ate our food at different times. Beef salad presentation was woeful. Spring rolls were split from frying and burnt from the inside out. The bun hue was totally tasteless, is advertised as spicy but forget that it wasn't spicy at all it just had no taste whatsoever. Baguette tasted stale and disappointing And to top it off we had staff taking pics of us at 9.15pm presumably in a attempt to amuse themselves that we dared stay past 9pm closing (mains came not much before 9pm and we left them 2 half uneaten). I honestly can't remember the last time I didn't tip for service no matter how bad a experience was. Such a shame, I love Vietnamese food and would love to have a good local Vietnamese place to go to but Pho Me is sadly such a let down. Feel free to improve (lots and lots) and invite us back to, we will be happy to pop back, but until then we will stick to the many great eateries that Hitchin has to offer.
