After all the great reviews unfortunately we found this restaurant pretty average. Our starters were generally good & service was fine however the pate came with a standard part baked baguette and the salad was an iceberg shredded lettuce & a cherry tomato. Not what you would expect from all of the raving reviews. The mains again were mediocre with the duck being quite dry and the supposedly “homemade” chips were hard and tasteless. Overall we were disappointed with our meal and wouldn’t go again. It’s a shame as it’s a lovely local venue that had a glowing reputation. Hopefully things will improve.

Been here 3 times now...what can I say..staff are very professional and the food sublime..the owner and chef is very knowledgeable about all aspects of what he prepares and cooks...a well oiled machine... I started with fresh garlic bread and the soup of the day..both excellent..for a main I had 16oz water buffalo t-bone steak. The taste was superb and fell off the bone..home made pepper corn sauce...you could taste the difference all washed down with a nice bottle of melted reserve. Well done team...will be back soon.

I can’t recommend this place enough, fabulous food, and the service was excellent. There were 13 women and we all got our meals served together. The food was amazing and some of the ladies were very adventurous choosing to have camel, kangaroo, python, wilderbeast , the choices were varied and cooked to perfection. I highly recommend this place, definitely planning to take the family there . Big thank you to Tony and his granddaughter for giving us a fabulous time x

Took my girlfriend there recently, didnt tell her that it's hte best steak I've ever had because I didnt want to hype the place too much. During the meal she told me it was the best steak she'd ever had! Went again yesterday and had the lamb special, it was amazing, although I regretted not having the steak because it's so good. It's very quaint inside and to be honest the decor doesn't fill you with confidence but the food here is so good you simply have to go. 2 starters, 2 mains, and a good bottle of red (not house) was £62, I find that more then reasonable given the standard of the food.

Myself and 5 friends attended o’sullivans On Saturday 6th of April after a long day of golf. We had an amazing, freshly cooked meal in a relaxed environment. The menu is completely different from anywhere that I have been before. Tony, the chef and owner, took the time to come out and explain the menu with all the exotic meats, the best way to have them cooked and the best accompanying wine (I highly recommend the Faustino Rioja). Several went for the Exoctic meat starter which included venison, python amongst other things and all plates went back clean. For mains, a few of us went for the eland (type of antelope) which was delicious. One of the boys went got the wagyu beef burger and said it was the best he’s ever had. Only a couple managed desserts but again there were clean plates. Overall, I highly recommend o’sullivans! We can’t wait to go back and try something else new and i now have a new favourite wine Thank you all!

What can I say. Been going to this restaurant for 25 years and it’s like a fine wine. It gets better with age. Lovely and friendly staff. A good family feel about the place and the chef is as friendly now as the first time I visited many moons ago. He has a vast amount of knowledge of the meat he cooks and always knows the source of where he gets it from (he’ll tell you in one of his stories no doubt). A good selection of bottled beers/lagers with a very good wine list at very reasonable prices. A very quirky restaurant which gives it character. The place is also spotlessly clean. There also seems to be a collection of hats on the walls that has grown over the years. This I believe would be a collection of hats given to the chef/owner over the years by the customers. I would definitely recommend this restaurant as one for the bucket list as it’s like no other restaurant I’ve been to. The most recent visit I had the special chosen was the crocodile t-bone and I would definitely have it again (I’m yet to try the same dish twice there as there’s always something new). 😆

On reading good reviews about this place I decided to book a table for myself and my partner. Best description ...It’s a grubby looking cafe with restaurant prices !! Dusty baseball caps hanging on the walls (didn’t get it). The “Snowdrop” starter (I read a great review on this so I overlooked the surroundings and tried to be positive) arrived 😂. Small prawns, salmon & crabmeat on a bed of lettuce with a half of a cherry tomato, it was as basic as that. Mains were not much better, undercooked chips and fatty meat. Chef made an appearance and we wish he didn’t as he was arrogant to say the least. Bottled beer only (one choice), service was ok. Dessert was nothing to rave about. My partner and I often eat out in and around the area and we both agree that this is by far the worst restaurant that we’ve ever been to, not just recently but in our lives. Trust me people....avoid this restaurant and spend your hard earned money elsewhere. There’s some really good eateries around and this isn’t one of them.

Had a lovely meal here Valentine's day. Partner had deep fried brie to start. I tried some and it was brilliant. I had the mixed seafood. This was equally as good prawns and calimari cooked perfectly. Partner had fillet steak for main and i had buffalo. Both steaks were perfectly cooked and the sauces with them were some of the best steak sauces I've tried. The chips were also brilliant. Thick chips but crispy chips. One of the highlights of the meal. The wines are also brilliant, and have a impression of being hand picked by the chef. The wine is also more reasonable than I would expect in most restaurants. Had chocolate cake for dessert, had this to share as both of us were stuffed. The cake was delicious.

First visit here for many years. We had friends visiting us and wanted to go somewhere different - this was it! A party of four, we were well looked after on arrival and given the opportunity top choose the menus - first tip, ignore the 'normal' menu and wait until the specials board comes round otherwise you will not get the full experience. The chef will then come and talk you through the menu and advise you what the different types of meat will taste like and how they are cooked. From the menu, I took the mixed starter - pieces of crocodile, python, venison and ostrich in sauce followed by a main course of camel steak. The rest of the main courses included kangaroo, zebra and wildebeast . All the food was tasty and exactly as we expected following the chef's descriptions. Not somewhere to rush over a meal, we finished off with dessert and had a great evening.

I hadn't been here for a long while but as we had friends visiting who are adventurous eaters like us we thought we'd go back and give it ago. Very quaint decor with subdued lighting which added to the experience but it was the culinary delights we came for. The exotic meats on offer made for much discussion as what to order. We all agreed to start with the exotic meats platter and was great fun trying to guess what meat we thought it was and was delicious. on to the main course, The guys went with the 10oz Buffalo steaks, very juicy with a nice little kick to the sauce. That would have been enough to send me home happy but after trying the wifes sauce with her Moulfon I wished I'd gone with her choice, absolutely stunning. Oh well that for next time. The owner and chef wandered about when he wasn't cooking and stopped to chat with the customers which I thought was a lovely touch. He was full of stories about sourcing the meats and wines, what a charming guy. Needless to say I will be back but won't leave it as long this time.

I've already left one interview on here a year or two ago. We celebrated our 7 year anniversary in this fantastic establishment last night and it never fails to deliver. Gorgeous food, wonderful service and lovely wine. My partner and I wanted a bigger main course than usual but still wanted starters so Tony, ever so thoughtfully, made us a small sharing platter of our favourite starters (snowdrop and garlic butter King prawns) with some French bread. For mains we had the buffalo steak. I had 20oz and my partner had 30oz. Both cooked to perfection. The menu may look intimidating to those less adventurous eaters but honestly, give it a try. Your server will explain everything to you. We love coming here because it's never like eating at a restaurant, it's like going to a friends house for a five star meal. Whoever says it's overpriced is clearly very stingy. The food is worth every single penny.

We were visiting our daughter in Llantrisant and were intrigued by this restaurant. From the outside it looks nothing but when we went inside we were pleasantly surprised by our warm reception and very comfortable surroundings. The waitress was very helpful and cheerful and explained anything we needed to know on the rather unusual specials board. There were many kinds of unusual meats on offer and I went for the buffalo steak which was delicious. We shared starters of Spanish meats and a baked cheese - both of which were delicious. We also had room for a pudding and the lemon mousse was particularly delicious and if you are a chocolate fan the chocolate cake was amazing. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and look forward to coming again when we visit my daughter next time.

Do book because it is quite small with just a few tables. But, an extensive menu with exotic meat and fish not normally found in the UK and a good wine list, in particular for good Rioja. All excellently cooked and presented. In four we shared an exotic meat starter and battered brie, four main courses of bison, wildebeeste, kangaroo and ostrich with a side of python, lovely baked and new potatoes and ratatouille and a couple of good bottles (there is good house wine also), running at approx. GBP 30 a head. There are of course other choices on the menu for those less adventurous. The owner and chef is knowledgeable about his wines and food - you would be hard pressed to find such food and service in an up-market restaurant in a big city, let alone is a small town in South Wales! Well worth a visit (and return visits, as the menu changes according to what is in season and available) - we make a point of returning every time we are in the area.

Visited on the evening of 2nd sept with the family. Nice welcome on arrival and prompt service. Menu was explained describing the different tastes and textures of the exotic meats namely Bison. Buffalo, crocodile kangaroo as well as standard fair like sirloin and filet steaks. We all opted for the home made chips but next time I will have the baked potato as the chips tasted of old frying oil as did the deep fried Brie starter. Apart from the chips the meals were perfectly cooked and the portions were very generous. The chef even came to the table to check how were wanted the meats cooked. If you want to try something different that's tasty and with friendly staff then O'sullivans is the place to visit. Cost wise our 6 starters and 6 meat mains (4 of which were exotic) a portion of garlic bread, a bottle of Asti, a bottle of beer and 3 cokes came to £175 so at less than £30 a head can't complain :-)

Just wanted to leave a quick review - not actually about the food as I've been here on several occasions and the food is of excellent standard and I would 100% recommend the food. I travelled to the restaurant on Saturday (20 min in car but always worth the drive!) but as soon as I got to the front door I turned away. The place stank of drugs - clearly from the window that was open above the restaurant! To say I was shocked was an understatement and I checked on three occasions but it was clearly coming from the open window above the restaurant. I have never had this on any of my previous visits, but won't be returning ever again and won't be recommending the place either to anyone after this experience! If you want good food with the stench of drugs - visit! But if you just prefer a good food experience avoid at all costs!

O'Sullivans is out second trip out to eat in the area for us (incomers to the valleys). It was a special occasion selected solely on Tripadvisor reviews and I am glad we ignored the extreme ones at either end. The building is several hundred years old, rather narrow but manages to fit 22 covers in what can only be described as a rustic setting; it is clean & tidy with great atmosphere. There were two menus to chose from - a 'steak and chips one (to be fair there was duck and chicken available as well) or the 'specials' which covered the exotic meats. These exotic meats are the heart of the O'Sullivans - Tony provides well cooked exotic meat; if you are not looking for that please choose somewhere else to eat! There were 4 of us eating... after we had been talked through the menu and the characteristics of the meat we selected king prawns, exotic meat on bread - could have been toast for a slightly better dish I think, deep fried brie, Tony's mushrooms as the starters; zebra, bison, ostrich & kangaroo, buffalo were the mains. Not a single scrap was left on any plate - the meats were all cooked to perfection and the sauces complimented them perfectly; a change of sauce for the bison was not a problem. We all had deserts - nothing remarkable there.I think the total bill for the 4 of us was £154 including a tip so not too bad at all and cheaper than some local competitors providing a less welcoming environment and less well prepared meal! Will we be going back - certainly; it is just our sort of restaurant.

We have never had a bad meal here. Whoever says the decoration is poor is either extremely snobby or doesn't know how long the family owned restaurant has been going for. We find the displays extremely enjoyable and there's always something new to look at. Visited this eatery in the week leading up to Christmas having booked two weeks beforehand. My first impression on entering was dismay. I had imagined it would be quite upmarket but it was like entering a pub that didn't have any atmosphere. There were five of us, three were our guests. Food was average, apart from one of the starters which was really enjoyed. There is a menu on the board which has the more unusual meats and fish dishes on then there is another menu (very sticky) which has general pub type dishes on. The two didn't seem to correlate and when I asked to have two starters instead of a starter and a mainthe waitress actually said "I don't think you can do that"! I was a surprised by this as I have ordered in this way at at least 50 restaurants. We also found the decor in the eating area very dated and tired. I am not sure what all the hats displayed on the walls were all about ( the lighting was very poor) but they were really covered in dust and it didn't add to the experience.

We were visiting LLantrisant and staying overnight nearby. We had heard of O'Sullivan's from a retained review of "exotic" eating in a magazine article. Parking in the old town of LLantrisant is fun, it is a very popular thoroughfare. From the outside first impressions are not sparkling but cross the threshold and you will find a warm, personable & friendly greeting extended to all. Tony, the owner & his family staff are tremendous. The menu choices are extensive, intriguing, heartly and thoroughly enjoyable - supplemented by a choice of the day board and some superb wines. Tony has an explicit and informed interest in your service and expands your knowledge in your selections. Meats are sourced very selectively and and great support is given to local producers for Lamb, Beef and vegetable for example. Back to the wines - a really great selection of well priced choices and some delightful high end vintages. All accompanied by a story and a shared delight in youe enjoyment. We had the full 3 courses and a coffe before being amongst the last to leave. The departure was as friendly and warm as the welcome and headed off into the dark night more than well provisioned!! We will definitely be returning. It was also nice to see an advertisement in some local tourist literature in the following days echoing our experience.

Have visited here for an evening meal several times. The restaurant is very small so you need to book. O'Sullivan's are known for their exotic meats (crocodile, zebra, goat, kangaroo etc). They do a starter plate of mixed meats if you are feeling slightly adventurous or you can go for a full fillet of something exotic if you're feeling brave. If you're not so adventurous, they do regular meals too. The food is all stunning here no matter what you have. Even the chips! The owners have been extremely helpful every time i have visited, and they explain what everything is. It is not the cheapest of places so best enjoyed as a special occasion, although the money is well spent on such a nice evening and meal. Easily my favourite local restaurant.

I been here several times and love it. The owner is very friendly and really makes you welcome. He takes time to explain the menu and the taste/textures of the unusual meats. For the quality of the food you certainly get what you pay for. If people think this restaurant's prices are expensive I suggest they stick to the big business chains (i.e. Harvester, Macdonalds etc). However if you want tasty, well cooked food (and cooked to order not defrosted and reheated rubbish) then this restaurant is for you. For a three course meal, it came to just over £30 a head. Consider this a very reasonable price !!!I wanted Mississippi chicken which I had on a previous visit. This wasn't on the menu but Tony said he would cook it for me. You certainly won't get many restaurants doing this!!!Highly recommend this restaurant.

From the outside, O'Sullivan's doesn't look like much - but wow, what a treat lay in store. My partner and his parents went to O'Sullivan's to celebrate a birthday and we certainly weren't left disappointed. The restaurant itself is quite quirky and has the appearance of a living room, but the atmosphere this created was wonderful. We were quite early to arrive, but it was wonderful that, as the restaurant filled up, the atmosphere remained private and intimate. The food was quite something else - we had kangaroo, crocodile and zebra between us. An odd combination, and perhaps one made worse by my vegetarian partner. Saying this, he enjoyed was was offered to him and the restaurant were extremely accommodating. Service was wonderful - the family were polite, helpful and friendly. All the factors above contributed to a very pleasant evening.Highly recommended if you are ever in the area.

The food and the hospitality were first class. The Owner/Chef took the time to explain all the different meats to us and gave us suggestions and made us laugh with all his stories, you couldn’t get a friendlier person. Everything was cook to perfection and we could not have asked for a more relaxed enjoyable night. I highly recommend the Bison & Kudu.

Came to this restaurant for the first time over two years ago,and have never been anywhere more satisfying and welcoming. From our first experience we felt like we were with family due to the owners (tony) hospitality. The food has always been to an exceptional standard and can't speak more highly enough of this fine restaurant. You only had to read the majority review's 95% of the people's review's to see how amazing this excellent restaurant is and has been a well estabalished name for over 30 years with many famous people coming to experience the classic not over top and more than friendly service.Once a customer you leave a friend for life.If you want a over the top fancy restaurant with a snobby waiter/waitress standing over you this is not the place for you,But if like myself and my wife you like a warm family restaurant with outstanding exotic food this is the place to come and you will not be dissapointed. To the sad people that decided to review this brilliant restaurant badly and unfairly please keep eating in the beefeater and mcdonald's as I believe this would be a more suitable place for you to dine and feel that extra warm experience well me and the over 95% of the population will carry on singing the praise's of this fine establishment. Many thanks tony and family Tommy and Laurie x

We went on a special occasion my birthday , it was over priced overrated , they have started doing these obscure foods that so many restaurants have tried and to me it's pathetic, foods like crocodile, zebra, ostrich, ect , all frozen tasteless my friends had ostrich and crocodile it was horrible tasteless and tough .Not for mus will not return , the owner said try Tony's mushrooms,he's one of the owners , it was all I can describe as a plate of mush , about a pint of sauce with mushrooms buried it was like a thick mushroom soup , terrible .Not our cup of tea we will not return , the atmosphere was nice small quaint restaurant which could be so much better with the right chef , very expensive overpriced. The wine prices were discusting , who do they think they are are Ramsey........!

Really warm welcome unusual menu great staff and excellent chef.If your looking for an alternative meal this is the place for you myself and my husband often frequent O'Sullivan's because you are guaranteed a real change from the norm. For starters I had mushroom topped with buffalo and garlic butter my hubby had toasted bread topped with crocodile, bison and antelope in a sauce fabulous. Our main course was myself bison steak my husband had kudu steak (a type of deer) served with home made chips and a selection of vegetables, we finished with vanilla custard tart topped with fresh raspberries I had chocolate crepes and ice cream what a banquet. The restaurant is a converted terrace house very rustic and very welcoming and accessible for those of us with disabilities. Will be back soon

This is a brilliant restaurant. The exotic meats on offer are a must to try.I had the exotic meat starter which had crocodile, impala and kangaroo, followed by wildebeest steak, but there are others on offer such as zebra, bison and buffalo. You can have 'normal' steaks but why would you? The staff are very helpful and talk you through all the exotic stuff to give you an informed idea of what to eat. All in all, an excellent place

Of all the years I've known of this place, and living within a mile from it for the last 15 years, this is the first time I've been. The only reason is their waiting list, which is a great sign but I always tend to decide to go out a week before. Anyhow, the decor was unexpected, and the table was quite small for the six of us, but then again, it appears that they like to keep things simple, but offering great food, which it was. Great night. I had a starter that included Goat, Venison and Crocodile, Main Course was Python with a half and half sauce, followed by a triple chocolate pudding.....all stunning, and fantastic sauces with all. The wine we had was good too. A must try restaurant

What can I say? We had heard of the restaurant but had never been so took the bull by the horns and booked with friends. What a lovely welcome, the restaurant isn't your modern look but is welcoming warm and comfortable with great service.Having been very much a medium to well done steak person or chicken, I was nervous about trying a new variety of meat but didn't want to leave not tasting something different. The chef and waitress both spent time talking us through the range on offer and I chose Zebra. What can I say? Beautiful and exactly as described I would definitely choose it again. Are you asking about the costs I hear well for 4 people dinning we had starters, main, desert, coffees along with 2 bottles of wine, beers and soft drinks for £167 - just over £40 per head not bad for a superb quality meal and drinks.Thank you we will be back soon!!

Restaurant was very quiet, only 2 others tables occupied.Service was efficient & friendly. For a starter I had clams & mussels - clams were enormous but VERY tough, mussels were tender and excellent flavour.Main course menu relies heavily on exotic meat e.g. zebra, bison, crocodile, but I had rump of lamb, very tender in an excellent garlicky sauce.Overall I enjoyed the meal, but was bowled over by it, as I expected to be from previous reviews

A party of four attended, two couples. We had a brilliant evening and the total bill came to £120 for for and drinks which was incredibly reasonable considering we all had 3 courses each with 3 of us having coffees aswell. For starters 2 of us had garlic mushrooms which were absolutely delicious, I tasted my partners, it was lovely, I had chicken and duck pate which was amazing and my friends husband had an exotic meats starter which had the likes of crocodile etc on it, this was in a sort of gravy and so I am told was absolutely yummy, the plates were cleared in minutes. For mains, myself and my friends husband had a mixed grill which consisted of: Bison, Oryx, Reindeer and Zebra these were served in a mixed pepper and garlic sauce which was amazing, not to overpowering, just perfect, the meats were cooked to perfection and tasted incredible, I would definitely have it all over again. My partner had Zebra which was also beautifully cooked and my friend had plain chicken, it was wild chicken though that was left to feed in woods, you could 100% taste the difference! it was stronger and had a more meaty taste. The deserts were 1 cheesecake, 1 chocolate orange sponge and 2 treacle puddings. I don't know about the others but were told they were amazing too but I can tell you my chocolate sponge was the best desert I have ever tasted in my life, it was like a Jaffa cake but in sponge cake form, wow is all I can say.I would recommend O'Sullivans to anyone who likes the un ordinary dining experience, as others have said we had problems reading the board but its explained no problem if you ask.If your down this way definitely check it out

2nd visit ........Quaint restaurant, small resturant about 5 tables suitabtle for couples, converted terrace house with lots of charm, very nice old photos on wall of area. The menu was explained by Sue female host as we struggled to read the handwritting on specials board, thank you Sue was a nice personal touch, but young male waiter seemed less enthusiasic or dis-interested. 2 starters and a 2 mains and beer for my partner (food included exotic meats )cost £60 bit pricey even though its a unique experience for most (have been many times to resturants serving exotic upmarket cusine so have knowledge to compare with). Meat was beautifully cooked but drowned in lots of very overpowering strong sauce apparently " Indian pepper is stronger" being an avid cook that cooks on taste and instinct not following recipies, all i can say from my experience chef did not taste test sauce before serving, all I cud taste was garlic shoots which are very strong and burny on the palate, maybe taste the sauce and serve in a sauce pot seperate next time, I love lots and lots of pepper and garlic but sauce was so overpowering it spoilt the beautifully cooked meat that looked like tinned cat food so disappointed as special occasion. Was not asked if we wud like more drinks and waiter was rushing about so unable to ask. Suddenly I Had dickie stomach so had to spend a penny, horrified to find Toilets right next to kitchen and could clearly hear a very interesting somewhat heated conversation from a unkempt looking kitchen as door open right next to the toliets. (Legal requirement 2 doors SHUT between kitchen and any other area to prevent spread of germs etc) Come on O'Sullivan's u got a niche market.....get your act together. And sue your lovely but plonking walking stick down on dinning table is not professional and nearly had to peel me of the ceiling I jumped so high lol.

We were last here 16 years ago (and thoroughly enjoyed our meal then!). It's a small restaurant with only ten or so tables, which gives it a nice, low key & personal ambiance. The service is almost 1-2-1 and is very good. The menu here is unique with some very "adventurous" dishes. I had Crocodile, Wild Boar and Kangaroo in a Garlic Sauce for starters and a Wagyu steak for main course. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and there were a number of equally "exotic" alternatives which I could have selected. Tony, the chef, is excellent. Not only is he a great cook, cooking the alternative meats to perfection, but he is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does and is prepared to spend the time talking to you / explaining the way he cooks it. Upon enquiry, he was also prepared to order in any more unusual requests (as long as you give him enough notice!).The prices weren't cheap - but this isn't a negative as you do actually get what you pay for. It's located in a qaint old village, which is very nice but as it was a Saturday night it was very difficult to find somewhere to park. Leave yourself plenty of time to find a space. Will definitely go back and we wont leave it quite so long next time!

Thought it is about time I gave this place The credit it reserves.I have been going to O'Sullivans for about 15 years it's a Family Business with incredible food and great value wines. We went again last Saturday and I have got to say I can't wait to return, every time we go I'm determined to have something from the specials board which have ranges of different meats and fish which are sometimes away from usual fare. This time I had the King Prawn starter which was stunning, for my main I ended up with my usual 10oz welsh black fillet cooked to perfection with home made chips with sides of garlic sauce (incredible over the veg which today was served as mushrooms, yellow pepper and Kenya beans) garlic bread and onion rings shared with my Wife and Son.Kirsten had the Welsh black ribeye as a main and Rudy had Chicken breast in batter both with chips both loved their meals. So lovely to have real chips not frozen versions the other choices were garlic new potatoes or jacket potato.Estrella Damn is the beer on draught again not the normal run of the mill beer in this country a nice change from the usual suspects.Staff are always friendly and Tony and Sue are not just owners of this incredible place they always provide a great welcome.I know I'll be having fillet again next time as when something is this perfect I can't get out of that addiction.Closing note....The best Steak and Chips anywhere in my mind.
