Oshibori in Dundee City

I have no clue why this place isn’t 5 stars. I’m writing this review 3 days later!! This is by far hands down the best restaurant me and my partner have been to. It is pricey but I feel as if the price matches the food, I am willing to pay £30 on a meal that meets its price because of the taste the amount you get and so on! Honestly never tried Japanese food before thought it would be a nice change and we like to try different foods. Honestly the best restaurant ever. I never write a review but I just feel I had to. I am so happy that I took my partner here for our anniversary it was so meaningful, romantic, calm and delicious. I’m very very happy with our meal. Thank you so much to the chefs and even the lovely waiter. Thank you, will 100% be back. Also noticed that people are moaning about the wait, the food is fresh it’s good to know it’s being cooked the second you ask for it. We thought. It was quick service.

But overpriced for the portion sizes, I guess we're just used to more sushi for our buck. It was only okay.

Almost half of the light bulbs in the restaurant were off or broken. The table legs were in the middle of your legs that was very awful if you were wearing a dress because you have to open your legs. The service was extremely slow and I was wondering how many people work in the kitchen. There were only two staff including waiter and bar tender on Saturday night. The rice wasn't Japanese rice. It was more like Jasmine rice that the Chinese restaurant used. The green tea wasn't green tea. The tea bags probably were from China. The toilet wasn't very clean and no soap, no hand towels or hand dryer.

Went out for my daughter’s birthday dinner. It was lovely. The waiter was really lovely. Very pleasant experience.

Took approx 2 hours to eat meal as service was so delayed even though there was only one other table in. Food was bland and unremarkable. Tempura’s prawns tasted as if they were frozen / not home made.

Amazing food. I love this restaurant. I recently had dinner again, and it was amazing. I will be returning :)

Bit late for the review, Dined in on 1st Sep , Was supposed to be a happy occasion as was celebrating my daughters birthday, but what a horrible experience. Advice to the owner, Japanese authenticity starts with their etiquette. After booking and confirmed the reservation via OpenTable our table wasn’t ready and on top of that we were made to feel very unwelcome and made to sit near the doors away from all the other party which was quite insulting. After having travelled extensively in Southeast Asia and dined at MS Japanese restaurant, the experience was really below par. Had to wait for more than hour for our food to come out of the kitchen, even then the pork cut in Ton katsu was wrong, in my Crab Donburi bowl, there was an oyster shell and an inedible flower for decoration🙄. Overall not to my standard

The waiters were fine and polite when we walked in. There was a long wait for our food to arrive. My gyozas were good and ramen was okay. My son's salmon was average and he ordered the spicy chicken Ramen which he could not eat as it was too hot. We asked for a replacement and were told this was okay as long as we paid for it. We ordered desserts which were average. I found the toilets to be unclean and lacking toilet paper. Lots of customers looking like they were waiting a long time for there food. An average experience with a limited menu.

The worst Japanese food i had ever had in my whole life. When we arrived, the waiter brought us to table real quick, which is good. The environment looks nice, the atmosphere is good as well. The food takes ~20mins to come, which is acceptable. Food is terrible tho. The fundamental of sushi, vinegar in pearl rice, none. They used normal rice for sushi, the rice are wet and fall apart when picking up. Then, they used egg noodles for ramen, which I don't think it can be called ramen. The noodle was soggy and the soup tasted horrible. When it goes to the tempura donburi, I can never think of a broccoli tempura is even exist in the world. The tempura sauce, which is not actually, is soya sauce only. At the end it takes about £60 for the dinner, around £20 per set. Overall, the only star is for atmosphere, the quality didn't meet the price. They really owe Japanese an apology. Absolutely not recommended if looking for good quality japanese food.

Ramen was really good but everything else was a dissapoinment. Dessert had flavoured of wasabi instead of choclate. The dish was dirty or kitchen staff disnt not switch its gloves before serving. Warm beer and green tea from tea bag topped it of :( I would not come back.

Brought my girlfriend here for dinner on her birthday as she has a degree in Japanese and has always really enjoyed the culture and food. We were seated at a gorgeous marble table with comfortable chairs. Soft music was playing and the atmosphere was cosy and relaxed. The servers were incredibly attentive and polite. I've noticed that some have given negative reviews due to the time it takes for the food to arrive and this is true - service isn't quick and if we had made plans for after the meal perhaps then it would have been an issue. However, we had no plans and got to enjoy some time together to talk and enjoy drinks as we waited on our dinner. We were in no rush, but in any case, the food was entirely worth the wait. Our dishes were obviously made fresh and with great care and attention to detail. Generous portions, beautiful flavours and visually stunning. Often times in restaurants I've found fast service takes precedence over food quality - no doubt a result of customers clamouring for instant gratification and venues itching for fast customer turnover. In contrast, this felt like a calming oasis where good conversation, atmosphere and food made our dinner an experience in and of itself. We had a delightful time and were highly impressed. Thank you Oshibori for a perfect birthday treat for my partner!

Dissapointing and overpriced. Restaurant was run down, wallpaper off walls cold and quiet, no atmosphere. We asked for the hearing to be turned on and they said it’s on full blast. Food was bland and another dish too salty couldn’t finish it. Cannot fault the servers they were lovely. Wouldn’t waste your time coming here.

Atmosphere was a bit bright and service was attentive but food slow. Sushi was great but beef was lacking. Not as tender as it should have been and looked like a plate of mince

I took my family for what I thought was going to be a lovely Japanese experience, it was incredibly disappointing. Two young men were there when we arrived and did extremely well but had no help or leadership, the decor was anything but Japanese more like a garden shed, as my five year old granddaughter said, and it could be a lot cleaner. The food was the saving grace it was good but after a visit to the ladies room I was worried as I don’t think I have ever been in a toilet quite as dirty before. Really a very disappointing experience and we certainly won’t be back. I must stress however that the two young men were polite and tried to please.

Went all the way to Dundee and the shop is close , not mention in google and no notice on the entrance. Bad ! Waste of time and money

Been here for years... highly recommend for anyone fancy Japanese cuisine this is the best place I've ever been for dinner ...food was very delicious & fresh really high standard wonder who made the hot food ? must be so talented chef , staff were friendly. Extremely gorgeous restaurant decor & atmosphere very impressed would come again so often xx Nan

The food was just excellent, superb Ramen, starters and deserts. Staff were nice and attentive. The interior is fun and different. One star off on atmosphere as it was a wee bit cold in the restaurant. But will be back - for sure.

Service was very slow and we were the only table. We waited almost an hour for our food. Food quality was only slight better than a takeaway. When the bill arrived it was more than we expected with 10% service charge. Needless to say we wouldn't hurry back.

A chilly restaurant with mixed quality of food. Some bits were good (fried salmon) while others (nigiri and sashimi) suffered from an overwhelming seasoning of sesame oil. I'm a big fan of it normally but not in these quantities. Interior of the restaurant is very cool, service was fine, but wouldn't go back purely because the food wasn't great and most things over-seasoned.

A bit underwhelmed.. was looking forward to a bit of Japanese cuisine in Dundee ... the restaurant itself is a bit rough around the edges decoration and wall paper coming off.. on top of this it was very cold inside the restaurant. The server was very friendly and helpful however the food took over 30 minutes to arrive and there were only two other tables in the restaurant. My partner ordered ramen and I ordered a chicken katsu Bento box . The Bento box was ok and my partner enjoyed his ramen ... Overall I won't be returning to Oshiburis, I thought the price was quite steep for the quality and setting of the place.

The wait is slow, I had to make eye contact 5 times before they came over to take my order. The food itself is very nice, I had the sushi platter, the wasabi is of good standard likewise the ginger, the salmon is also pretty fresh as well as the tuna, I had the California rolls, they were nice but I’ve had better, the rice was slightly hard, everyone prefers soft sticky rice, the cucumber on the side for garnishing was old, the presentation of the food itself is good, the tables are sturdy and it’s a very nice environment to have food in.

The service was exceptionally slow. We waited for over an hour before receiving our orders. It's understandable to have some waiting time during busy hours, but this delay was excessive and unacceptable. Unfortunately, food wasn’t great either. What’s happening in the kitchen?? If you have half a day to waste, then by all means. If not, I unfortunately cannot recommend this place. First and last time.

Had lunch here on Friday, very tasty and staff super friendly. Talked about the Game of Thrones room and garden decor which was very cool! Thank you. Certainly the best Japanese food in Dundee

Food took 50mn, quality was well below average and the ramen stock was suspiciously too white. Friendly service, though was clearly overworked as the only staff on premises. Atmosphere was good only to be let down by the food.

The food was very tasty but as other reviews suggest, it was very salty. Good quality though. Service was quite slow from ordering to receiving food but the staff were friendly and accommodating.

I have previously been here a few years ago and it was nice, the service was prompt and food was good, however returning recently there must have been a huge change of management. The food took about 1 and 1/2 hours to come after ordering, which is much slowly than a few years ago, and all the dishes are different from what they were, a drop in quality in my opinion. To top it off the waiting staff didn’t seem to know any dish names and weren’t able to provide us with spoons as they couldn’t find any. Disappointed in the decline of the restaurant, the food is still decent, but maybe not worth the over an hour wait

I recently visited Oshibori Dundee to celebrate a friend's birthday, and I must say, our experience left us feeling quite disappointed. As first-time visitors, we were excited to try out this restaurant, given its glamorous appearance. However, our initial impressions quickly faded as we encountered several issues throughout the evening. Upon arrival, we found that there was no host to greet us, so we approached the bartender to inquire about our reservation. Eventually, we were seated at our reserved table and handed menus. However, it took a staggering 20 minutes for a waiter to come and take our order, which immediately set the tone for the slow service to follow. After 50 minutes, our alcoholic drinks finally arrived, but we were promised water that never materialized. We had to remind the waiter multiple times, and it took an additional 10 minutes before we received it. By this point, we had been waiting for an hour and had yet to see any sign of our food. What frustrated us even more was that tables that arrived after us were served their meals before us. When we raised our concerns with the manager, we were informed that those tables had preordered their food. While it's understandable that preorders might take priority, it left us questioning why our status as paying customers was seemingly disregarded. It took a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes before our food finally arrived, which was an incredibly long wait. While the quality of the food was good, the overall experience was tainted by the excessive waiting time. To make matters worse, no compensation was offered for the poor service we endured. Considering the high prices charged at Oshibori Dundee, we expected much better treatment as paying customers. Regrettably, our evening was spoiled, and we left feeling let down. Furthermore, I would like to add that our disappointment with Oshibori Dundee extended beyond the service and waiting time. We encountered additional inconveniences during our visit. The restroom facilities lacked basic amenities such as hot water and even toilet paper. It was quite surprising and frustrating to find such shortcomings in a supposedly upscale establishment. These issues further contributed to our overall negative experience at Oshibori Dundee. Based on our experience, we have no plans to return to Oshibori Dundee in the future. The slow service, lack of communication, and overall disappointment overshadowed the positive aspects of the food and ambiance.

The best restaurant I’ve experienced in Dundee and I’ve tried most. It’s not just the best in Dundee, the meal I had here was as good as the best I’ve had…. And I’m pretty old! Ordered the salmon sushi platter, the salmon was pure velvet, the flavours, I’m not going to forget. We then had another sushi, I forget the name, was a kind of katsu and avocado. It was dressed with the beautiful sauce and the flavours were so deep, complex and thoroughly delicious. You know you’ve had something special when you’re still thinking about it the next day and beyond. I would recommend to everyone, especially if you’re a sushi fan or noob because there simply isn’t better in Dundee

I wanted to eat sushi all the time during my pregnancy so we came to try best sushi but it was awful, tasted like from Lidl. Waitress didn’t had any clue what is going on. People who came before us was waiting their food for 2 hours, we were waiting more then hour… horrible service.. I DO NOT RECOMMEND. For this money I would better go somewhere else.. disappointed.. waste of money.. and service soooo poor.. 1/10 never come back and now I don’t like sushi..

Lovely food as always. Unfortunately I found the service to be a bit slow (although we were the only people in the restaurant) and I had to leave before my dessert arrived. Judging by previous occasions though it is a wonderful place for a meal with a lovely atmosphere and decor.

Excellent food and location if you sit out in the gardens. Quite expensive but a jewel in Dundee.

It's truly a horror show. I was the only one in the restaurant and service was still slow. I got a scolding hot (Sake should be no higher than 45C) sake and a flat coke. This was followed by a disappointly dumped on a plate soft shell crab tempora, underseasoned and tasted frozen. Before i had even finished this a grand tray of two whole skewers (Sarcasm) was brought out with an inedible flowers which is against the law to serve with, a sea shell coated in sauce, overcooked rice, and mediocre chicken. £60 for this complete mess. No point in complaining go the teenager in charge just vote with your feat which is what everyone else seems to have done. Genuinely the worst dining experience ive ever had.

Honestly this place has become a bit of a joke. The food and service used to be amazing and now it has all gone to shambles. The restaurant it self is run down and dirty (with a desperate need of repair). The service from the staff is just a lack attention towards the tables they are looking after, be that from inexperience or simply never having enough people working on busy days. And the food itself tastes like a student has made it. Ok if you were making it yourself but not when you are paying over £30 a dish with a mandatory 10% service charge added for no apparent reason. Its a shame but hopefully the owner sees this and pulls the silver spoon out and does something productive for his business.

The food was really nice and fresh! However they were short-staffed and hence the service was slacking in promptness. Overall, the experience could have been better with the service, however the food made up for it mostly!

The portions were more than enough. The service was very good. Only slight problem was a leak in the roof. However no one was placed near there.

If you're looking for a unique dining experience, this Japanese restaurant with an interesting theater-like setup is definitely worth checking out. From the high curtains to the wide seating chairs and glass chandelier, the atmosphere is definitely a standout feature of this restaurant. I tried the lunch menu which consisted of a salmon sushi bento box, and while the salmon was generally fresh and flavorful, the rice was slightly overcooked which took away from the overall experience. However, the presentation of the bento box was beautiful and added to the theatrical feel of the restaurant. The real standout of the meal, however, was the homemade mascarpone cheesecake with a meringue. The dessert was absolutely amazing - the cheesecake was rich and creamy, with just the right amount of sweetness, and the meringue added a lovely lightness to the dish. It was clear that the dessert was made with care and attention to detail, which really elevated the overall experience. Overall, while the lunch menu may have had its ups and downs, the dessert was definitely a highlight. If you're looking for a unique dining experience with a touch of theater, this restaurant is definitely worth checking out. Just make sure to save room for the cheesecake!

I think this was the worst customer service I have ever received. When I asked for the menu he wasn’t sure which one to give, then after that I asked for an itemised recept and he didn’t know how to do that either. After nearly an hour wait we got our food… He also didn’t want to offer us soya sauce….

Worst Xmas dinner ever. Temperature in the upstairs single-glazed restaurant was below 10C, the old radiators were luke warm. One of our party became ill with cold as a result. We had to sit with our coats on. The food isn't specifically Japanese. It's rough, cold and overpriced. The staff could have at least brought in portable heaters but they didn't. Ah, and the green tea is a joke. Neither of us are coming back there.

Service was terrible waited for 20 minutes to be served food and we were the only table there, waited for our drinks and didnt arrived until we asked. Was freezing, no heating was on. Mains were not good, the sushi didnt taste fresh at all! The food was okay and edible however did not taste as authentic as it was advertised, very disappointed! Bill was given straight after mains were done without asking for further drinks or dessert. Overall bad experience and overpriced for what you are getting.

I ordered twice and both times the rice was not good. Never again.

By phone, I ordered Chicken Teriyaki Bento to take and the process was easy - one star. The food portion (I ordered Small) was good - one more star. However, the dish was not Chicken Teriyaki - it was Chicken Katsu smothered in Teriyaki sauce. Also, the rice, which was not sticky Japanese rice, was flavoured with a more Chinese twist to the flavour and the green garnish (mini salad) had a sweetened dressing - No star. What was given to me was, wrongly, Chicken Katsu (Breaded Chicken) with Teriyaki sauce - if in Japan the sauce for Katsu would have come in a sachet to squeeze over yourself just when you sit to eat. And for the mini salad too as sauce and dressing soak into the food before you get home spoiling the flavour and texture on your palette. While perfectly edible, the flavour was not bad, just not authentic: Chicken Teriyaki is NOT breaded chicken. Price-wise, more palatable if lower. A bit disappointed: I lived in Japan for 30 years and was looking forward to the real deal, as advertised.

Two course bento box lunch for only £15 per person... An absolutely fabulous mixture of flavours and textures. Excellent service in very grandiose surroundings. Restaurant could have been a bit warmer but I'll definitely be coming back here.

Easily some of the least flavorful sushi and worst cocktails we’ve ever had. The gyoza were deep fried. The patio was neglected, had trash in nooks and crannies, grass and bushes overgrown. The glasses not polished, floaters in the water pitcher, no or little ice in the cocktails, really basic bland cocktails for that matter. Certainly overpriced for most everything. If it weren’t for the fact that Dundee is already struggling for hospitality I’d say this restaurant should not exist. That said, we’ll never be going back. The only bright note was the kindness of the host/waiter. Certainly understaffed in every way and obviously an owner who just doesn’t care about quality control. Sorry but not sorry, it was quite an embarrassment of a “Japanese” restaurant. Late addition, this response from the owner says it all. Takes no responsibility of the quality of his establishment. What a joke. (And obviously a man with many problems)

Przepyszne jedzenie, pięknie udekorowane. Profesjonalna, miła obsługa, atmosfera rodzinna, muzyka relaksująca. Niedługi czas oczekiwania na posiłek, który jest przygotowywany na bieżąco ze świeżych produktów. Jestem zachwycona, w skali od 1 do 10 daję 10 z dużym plusem. Napewno z wielką przyjemnością wrócę w to miejsce.

Food was amazing and service was brilliant couldn’t fault it, the only thing I will say is I was extremely disappointed that they haven’t took the wagyu off the menu and I didn’t get told when I went in, so when I ordered it I was told they don’t do it anymore as they haven’t been able to get it since covid, was gutted as was going to treat myself for my birthday and that is the only reason I booked this place, however the food We did get was amazing so that made up for it, will definitely be back. Also very reasonable price for what you get

Restaurację Oshibori odwiedziliśmy po raz kolejny i po raz kolejny było to bardzo miłe doświadczenie. Jedzenie jak i obsługa są na najwyższym poziomie. Atmosfera panująca w restauracji jest bardzo przyjemna, profesjonalna i miła obsługa, która czuwa nad zadowoleniem klienta a posiłki są przygotowywane na świeżo i szybko serwowane. Wszystkim, którzy chcą spędzić czas w miłej atmosferze i przy pysznym jedzeniu z ogromną przyjemnością polecam restaurację Oshibori. Niesamowite kulinarne doświadczenie.

This is a bizzare place decor wise and seems that Tangs is shut and Japanese now upstairs so need to sort signage. There is a massive menu and lots for vegan. The options we had were mostly very good although the large vegetarian sushi platter was mostly the same which was a shame. Service was quite slow despite being quiet but only one staff member in. Would probably order takeaway next time.

Waiter was friendly and tried his best. Restaurant was freezing, no heating on at all. Bill given when finished mains without asking about further drinks or puddings. We were told the chef had already left. There were 20 minutes left until closing for the lunch service with other people still dining.

Worst restaurant experience ever. Place was filthy, service was terrible and after waiting 20 minutes for an order to be taken, we walked out as did 2 other groups of diners at the same time. Incidentally I did go to use the toilet on first floor and I noticed a door half open nearby. A chest freezer could clearly be seen to have the lid open wide and a huge build up of frost all around the lid area. Not exactly encouraging. Would never go back

So turned up at Oshibori looks nice friendly staff then where we were sat it was dirty dead fly's and bugs on the windowsill down on the floor dust and bits of broken plaster. I had been looking so much to go for some sushi and ramen then to my amazement sorry no ramen as there's no noodles (no noodles on a Friday night) so then kind of just picked something quickly off the menu chicken kushiyaki and a katsu chicken bento so waited 45 minutes for it then it turned up it looked nice but for what it was it was a chicken tikka kebab with boiled rice with some sesame seeds on top needless to say was even more shocked they charged me close to £30 for my chicken tikka kebab won't be back and if anybody else reads this go to koku shi in Perth now that's outstanding Japanese food.

I was excited to visit Oshibori. I haven't had sushi for so long and I couldn't wait to try it. When you are coming in to the restaurant the air smells of wood, the decor is nice, more modern than traditional, but lack of music was disturbing. Nice waitress welcomed us etc. So far so good until. I love Japanese tea, so first what I have ordered was green jasmine tea - and it came in teabags with only 1/3 of teapot of water in the pot. Big disappointment. Then we were waiting 50min for our food. Hubby had vegan ramen and I had sushi with miso soup. Miso soup was very weak, no tofu in it, and just warm. The miso soup arrived 30min after our placing order, and only I had it, hubby still awaiting. Another 25 min and out food finally arrived. Another disappointment... I should maybe took closer picture on my sushi but it was looking like made by amateur. You know after 50min I could expect something better. Hubby said his ramen wasn't wow too. So yes... We gave it a shot but we are not coming back.

Just moved to Dundee and already found my favourite place! Amazing food and service, ramen was so delicious, one of the best I’ve ever had! Sushi was fresh and beautifully presented, will definitely go back to explore more :)

Short version is we came for a takeaway and the takeaway menu wasn’t available as they only had the sous chef who was new and didn’t know how to prepare those dishes. When we got our order it was missing the soup, was improperly wrapped and falling apart and just not great. I called that evening and the next a few times to complain and got nowhere. So I left a google review saying pretty much what I said above and emailed them. The reply I got is attached where the owner called us minks. So if you have a bad experience and complain, instead of professionalism, you get childish insults. Would avoid.

Not very authentic but it’s decent. I ordered ramen but the noodles were egg noodles, not ramen. I really enjoyed the broth though and the service was good.

Really let down by our experience last night. Discovered it was only the sous chef available and a limited menu, despite ordering takeaway, we were forced to pay certain prices and were missing items. What we received was also loosely wrapped and badly prepared. Won’t be back again in a hurry

While the food was excellent, we had to wait over an hour for our starter, some problems in the kitchen. We were left to ask what was happening. The Ramen was excellent when it arrived.

Food was incredible, staff were fantastic, decor was beautiful, atmosphere was lovely! A vibe indeed!

Huge disappointment. Ramen tasted like pack noodles with some toppings. No dashi, just milky broth with soggy vegetables. It’s weird how none of the ramens they serve comes with an egg. Noodles deffinitely not homemade. Portion huge but whats the point, I lost interest after a spoonful of the broth. I make much better ramen at home for fraction of the price. I may come back to check out the bentos as they look great but the waiting time is appalling so not any time soon.

This was one of the most disappointing meals of our lives, front start to finish. Firstly when we arrived the gate next to sign was locked. We then discovered we had to enter through an old Chinese restaurant! The decor was extremely strange, almost like being in an antique shop. The chairs were dirty and the tables were not cleared around us for an hour. The one waitress working seemed confused at all times and very slow. The food itself was appalling for the price. There was no flavour to anything we ordered. We have had better sushi from supermarkets!!! We weren’t given plates and we’re not offered soy sauce etc with our food. Please avoid at all costs!!

Very disappointing dining experience. The table, placemats, and glasses were all dirty, to the extent that we didn't drink any water during our meal. We were sat in a dark corner, and I could barely see my food. The decor is an almost absurd number of fake-gold painted objects, and the head of some unfortunate horned animal on the wall. Overpriced, at more than 60 pounds for a regular meal for 2. There are much better places to eat in Dundee just up the road: Rama Thai, for a nice upmarked asian dining experience. Canton House, for an authentic chinese takeaway. Beruit for a quick meal near the uni campus (great wraps). Honestly, this was a real let-down. I came with no expectations, yet still left disappointed.
