Old Smithy in Barrow-in-Furness

Very poor.Fish ok but batter wasn’t crisp so ate fish and left batter, chips just about cooked pale and soggy could not eat and peas had so much salt in could not eat. £10 is a lot to pay for a portion of fish :(

This is without a doubt the best chippy in the Furness area! Beautiful food & Beautiful staff & owners!

After riding up from London in the Dave Day ride, I camped at the Roose Cons club, a member of the staff there suggested this place for fish and chips.. I was happy to see the shop has a Best Chippy Award, I ordered fish and chips, surprised it was described as fish and chips, not what fish, just fish... And a couple of sausages, took these back to my tent, when I unwrapped it, the fish had an off white creamy substance oozing through the batter, upon close inspection this was uncooked batter seeping through a very thin lightly cooked outer layer, the fish itself was the thinnest fillet I have ever seen and not what I would call fresh, most likely frozen. The chips, very anemic looking, after seeing the fish I couldn't bring myself to eat them, the chips and the fish went in the bin. Later while having a drink in the club, locals informed me the chip shop used to be very good but has undergone an ownership change...

Drove past just as it was getting dark and the smell filled up my helmet. I had to turn around and get something. Upon arriving they said they were about to shut the door but still served us with a smile anyways. Food was very nice (especially the battered sausage) and they even let me use the restroom before continuing on my journey. We shall be back again. Thank you for making our stop as pleasant as you did.

Used to think this was one of the best chippies in town, not anymore,(now probably one of the worst). Just had battered sausage and chips, which was very poor. Chips were over cooked, hard and cold, sausage was anemic and tasteless and batter was like deep fried cardboard. Definitely won’t be visiting again!

Not as good as it used to be. Better alternatives in my opinion.

I had food delivered and it was very cold

Pre ordered a meal at 12:44 for delivery between 17:30 +18:10. Rang about 18:15 as had not arrived. Told it was being bagged up and waiting for driver to pick it up. Meal finally arrived at 18:35. Chips were nice but fish was quite greasy. Won't be ordering again in a hurry .

Good portions with free delivery what could be better

Rude attendance, long long time to wait to prepare a Burger, that comes without vegs and sauces.. and more important COMES DEEPFRIED with no specification on menu. Chips was ok, burger so groce.. enough that i i'll never step inside again..

Best fish and chips for miles!! Well 30 miles to be exact, I live the the Lakes, and now travel a wee distance to have extremely tasty , freshly cooked fish with light crispy batter and great tasting chips. I love chippy curry sauce. Always really friendly staff. Thanks for another wonderful Sunday treat!

What a shame that this place has gone to ruin! Second bad one in a few weeks and so looks like the poor food is here to stay. The chips are under cooked and have a paper like consistency. Shame as it's been a favourite of ours for years. Always different staff in hardly see the same person twice lately.

Although twice my food was late,it was very hot and tasty and polite staff

Wow....how not to do customer service! Aggressively asked if I wanted anything in the fryer.....then no acknowledgement...too busy on her phone. Staff in small black shorts...working the fryers! No apron...just no.idea of customer service. Used to love that chippy in its hay day...kind staff made the difference. Chips were OK though!

Great menu, great value, superb food.

Ordered from here a couple of months ago and the food was awful, complained directly and was given a free replacement of the same meal the week after, which was marginally better but still underwhelmed. Thought we would give them the benefit of the doubt and ordered again, big mistake. The food was cold when delivered, batter wasn't crisp, chips mushy and my haggis was just a lump of stodge in soft batter. I certainly won't use them again, there are plenty of other places in the town that can provide tasty, hot and better presented takeaway food than this for £18.

Food arrived 1hr 30 minutes late first time ordering and will definitely be the last, the food was burnt and the fish batter was like rubber it was disgusting!! and to top it off the delivery driver put our food on the doorstep and walked off!! Disgusting!! Olympic is the best! But unfortunately it wasn’t open tonight ☹️

Awful food, waited nearly 2 and half hours, food tasted like it was reheated, asked for salt, but tasted no salt, it was just so plain, left in the door step by delivery driver who didn’t even knock. Was going to leave it for the seagulls, but they wouldn’t have touched it either.

Went today whilst in area from Derbyshire. After watching good review from Gareth the baldy review man on u tube & did not dissapoint . Parked over road in conservative club car park .. fresh cooked haddock & chips . Crispy batter lovely white fish & good value .. really enjoyed it

Good food but 2 hours to wait for delivery . Shocking .getting slower . All you get is not enough drivers and busy . Happening to often . Never again

Delivered Stone cold, burnt, ( nothing to do with seasonal potatoes re disclaimers on ordering page, they were cremated!!) completely inedible and went straight in the bin. this was the last chance i gave them because my daughter wanted to! absolute waste of almost £20 for a couple of meals ..save your money better chippys out there, 1 star as zero wasn’t an option. Id post a pucture but horror has to have an 18 rating

Well what can I say about the Old Smithy other than I am terribly disappointed, As a local member of the Holbeck community, where the Chipshop is based. I tend to be biased towards the restaurants in my local vicinity but you have made that impossible, I ordered on Saturday April the 8th, as this was Easter weekend I believed the food I would receive would be fresh and covered with crispy batter due to the amount of business I assumed it would receive. Oh how I wish that was true, the meal that I received was far from what I described, the batter surrounding the lifeless fish would have won first prize on the great British bake if entered as a Victoria sponge. It was the thickest, oil sodden batter I have ever tasted to date. The chips tasted like the were cooked last week and then microwaved to an inch of their potato existence and then tossed in with all the burnt pieces of batter and then served. If you do have the misfortune of having an experience here I had then my heart goes out to you.

Came in for lunch ordered sausage and chips for 2, chips were very brown, overcooked and inedible and the sausage was warm...our chickens liked the chips tho. Won't be visiting again.

Usually great food but this time fish overcooked . Supposed to homemade onion rings but got cheap shop bought ones .and no mushy peas . Not up to there usuall standard

Bit hit and miss with the quality, plus they cook to order which can take a while. Some people clearly don't get that you shouldn't park a car on a corner of a busy road there will be an accident Some day

This is the local chip shop to my parents. We always come here when visiting. The staff are really friendly. The food always tastes great. The guy who does the cooking of fish etc is really sound. Before they took card we came(without cash) and they let us have food and to drop money off the next day. You wouldn’t get that anywhere else!

Collected some food from the Olde Smithy Chippy unfortunately they forgot to add the curry sauce I ordered, within 5 minutes of my order arriving, they took the time to send one of the members of staff round to my house to drop off a carton with a very sympathetic apology , Fantastic service and fantastic food.

Delicious gluten free sausage and chips, the best I've had in a while, shame we live 65 miles away but surely will think of an excuse to visit again! Lovely service, friendly staff! Even gave water to our dog! Thank you :)

Ordered fish and chios with deluvery. Money taken by card, still waiting on delivery and now Old Smithy is closed. Wouldn't recommend here, others i know have had same problem. I had to give 1 star as would not let me post. If anything i'd give them -5 stars

Chips and cheese with Cajun sauce, proper hangover cure and delicious.

Been going to the smithy since moving to Walney and not had a bad meal yet. Fish and chips are always fresh and everything you want from a traditional fish and chip shop. Staff are always happy, cheerful and cater to anyones dietary needs.

Best in barrow. Food is always good and on time. Cant fault them

I’ve been recommended by work to come here. Was very disappointed! The chips were hard and the fish wasn’t great! The staff were lovely but I wouldn’t suggest anyone to come here

Large potion of good qaulity of fish and chips. Spoilt by not having the oil/fat hot enough when putting the fish I cook. It should be hot enough to seal the batter. It was soaked in fat/oil even after having been stood on the fish frier Drain ed for 5mins. By the time we got home and in packed them they were ruined has the batter stuck to the paper and came off . Cone to Leeds Robin hood fisheries see how its done.

Ordered Fish and Chips, delivery ok all arrived on time. Chips were really good Fish was dry as hell. No taste whatsoever. They also forgot my lemon!

Ok but often says that it is open when it is not, so beware lest you waste a visit. Do not make a special journey even if it says online that it is open. It may very well be closed.

Used to be very good. But received a meal today that was LITERALLY rock solid !!! Unable to eat meal delivered by Barro Eats. rang & to be fair offered replacement meal or refund. Now awaiting refund.

Ordered from barrow eats 19.08 food expected 20.15 called and asked about my order “oh he’s just set off” a 2 mile drive and 20 minutes later showed up with three stone of Luke warm mushy chips n what suppose to be haddock for £4 were more like grey dried pollock and gravy had skin on it It’s up to you

Very Disappointed ordered twice and both times have forgot items.

Fish was lovely, chicken and mushroom pie was disappointing and chips were only warm not hot.

The food was good however it took 2 hours to come. We had a call an hour after we ordered saying it was 15 minutes away. 50 minutes later it arrived. Unfortunately we won't be ordering again.

Just had fish and chips from here for the first time in ages as last time we were disappointed as the chips were anaemic and scrappy. Not tonight. They were lovely chunky golden chips and the fish was delicious and white and flaky. We will definitely be back.

Ordered two fish and chips with an extra fish. It took 2 hours to arrive. To make things worse, they forgot the extra fish and still charged us for it. Chips were soggy and didn't get many but the fish was nice but for around £8 each it wasn't value for money.

havent had fish n chips for while, December 2019 called by on way home and had a portion of chips, despite the negative reviews i thought id give them a try, albeit they were classed as one of thee best chippys about so with that in mind i thought id try them and glad i did, they were lovely, fluffy in the middle, cruchy on the outside, plentiful and will call again. Howver Covid stopped this and when allowed and passing by, I will call in.

I live local and we always loved the Smithy food . It was akways cooked to perfection. But having been twice since the change of ownership we have not been happy. Once hard overcooked chips and soggy batter round fish. Yesterday tried it once again. We were told no steak and kindney puds available anymore which my hubby always has. My fish had soggy batter again and the chips were greasy abd soggy... Hortid I'm disappointed and won't go again. I beleive the cutrent vowner is trying to take on too much and been too greedy with Barrow Eats etc and quality is taking a back seat. But eventually people wull realise and wont return.

With businesses adapting after covid a lot of places now offer delivery. Having had Fish and chips from other places we tried here. It was the worst meal I've ever had. The fish was burnt dry and cold. Chips were that undercooked by the time it arrived after swearing in boxes they were like liquid inside a skin. Never again!!! Other places have stepped up and excel but this place needs to stop this service immediately. Would not recommend to anyone.

Great food just a shame some things was missing off the order when we opened to eat .... we ordered over the phone in advance to collect 4 different orders but the ladies did still get a bit mixed up but overall food was good . Salt and pepper chips are tasty 👌
