Such a shame they’ve closed So glad we had the chance to stay at this magical place run by a lovely couple & a slightly arthritic golden retriever. Best full English I’ve had & magnificent dinner. If you see this by some chance, you may be gone but aren’t forgotten. Simon Rhodes

Our daughter and son in law took us there as part of our Christmas present. I can honestly say it was one of the finest, if not the finest meal I have had. This was also the opinion of the other three. It was in a very relaxed atmosphere and we shall certainly revisit. We all chose the taster menu and We would highly recommend it.

We stayed for two nights with friends and couldn’t rate it highly enough. The food was all brilliant, from the welcome tea and cake to the fabulous dinner. Between us we must have tried everything on the menu and it was all great. The rooms were comfortable and our dog was welcomed by the friendly owners. The walks direct from the door are beautiful, no need to drive once you are there.

After having had a terrific dinner here a number of years ago, I was keen to return to the Old Inn. Unfortunately this visit didn't live up to my expectations. There was a choice of a la carte or set menu. As we didn't fancy some of the courses that were part of the set menu, we opted for the a la carte. The amuses were nice and well presented, as were the lobster cannelloni and sweetbreads. The main course of Iberico pork was a disappointment: it was dry and tasted more like an ordinary pork chop than what I would expect of an Iberico pork main course. At £54 for 2 courses, I felt rather short changed.

The whole experience of staying and eating at the Old Inn is a treat. Top quality ingredients are prepared with great knowledge and presented without fuss or adornment, so the chef's skills are plain to see. A particular highlight was the quail leg, served alongside a roast quail breast starter and looking initially like a slightly unnecessary addition. But it had been perfectly braised for half an hour until the surface was caramelised and the meat tender and tasty. Portion sizes are good (and don't stint on the expensive ingredients, my main consisted largely of brill and lobster with just enough veg to complement) and the fixed price menu covers everything from canapes while you order to coffee with petit fours after - drinks are extra of course.

I was recommended to The Old Inn Drewstaington by a customer and friend who knows my love of good food. I was not disappointed. It’s run by a charming couple, Anthea welcomed us to the cosy country lounge with log fire, a pot of tea and delicious cakes cooked by Duncan. He worked with Sean Hill, (who in my opinion is the finest chef in Britain), and it shows. The meal that night was the best food I’ve eaten for a long time. The pre dinner taster of fresh foi gras was a reminder of similar I last tasted in France many years ago. The meal was perfection, with Duncan himself serving some of the courses. I could talk about the wonderfully theatrical blackberry soufflé, the friendly atmosphere, presentation and attention to detail, but it is the taste of the food and excellence of the ingredients that I loved.

Whatever the occasion, to go to the Old Inn is a real treat. Both cosy and elegant, it has just the right amount of covers to create a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere and the food itself is a rare combination of bold yet comforting flavours, precisely and exquisitely executed - quietly stunning. All in all, this is the perfect restaurant (with lovely rooms if needed - not to mention an amazing breakfast) and just what you want from eating out that you don't get from other so called good restaurants. Spot on!

Warm welcome from the owners (and the 2 lovely dogs). Food is outstanding - the 'plate of raspberries' was, I think, the best dessert I have ever had. This restaurant never fails to amaze, the unpretentious setting and casual but attentive service before table and at table just adds to the experience. Often surprised by little gems delivered between courses. More surprised by the dishes being delivered by Duncan (Chef and co-owner) explanation of the dish a real gift from the creator. The foie gras amazing, the fish perfectly cooked. And the unassuming menu which just states a plate "raspberries" which is so understated it's unbelievable! To the fondant and souffle that arrives. Stunning just stunning from start to finish.

Wow, what a great experience. The most perfect setting in a great location. The food was incredible and we got much more than we expected. The owner's dogs in the front room (the lounge) were so friendly and loved cuddles which made the experience feel extremely cosy, warm and homely. Me and my boyfriend both had great starters, mains and desserts with coffee afterwards accompanied by little surprise macarons and homemade biscuits. Great drinks, great service and amazing value for money. The best part of the experience however was how friendly the owners were and how happy they were to invite us into their home and business. Would definitely recommend and will be back again! Thanks for a great evening. Money well spent!

I have been to the Old inn now for many years and yet have never written a review. When I ask myself why, some part is actually selfishness, in that I unconsciously want to keep it just as it is and accessible to just a few. But of course that is ridiculous, something as good as this needs to be shouted about, the world needs to be told. Duncan and Anthea run a remarkable restaurant hidden away on the northern edge of Dartmoor. Duncan's cooking is outstanding, in the choice of menu, ingredients, presentation and above all utterly delicious. Anthea running front of house is totally charming and professional. I have eaten in some of the best restaurants around the world and the one thing about the Old Inn that I cannot fathom is why the Michelin guide has persistently overlooked it. In my view it denigrates the value of that guide and in some ways shows it up for what it is, a snobbish publication that is at times far to inward looking. Anyway, enough about Michelin, I have aired my grouse, let's talk about the food and drink. There are three courses and usually four choices in each. What I find remarkable is how Duncan manages to find a perfect balance in each section such that the range of complementary courses is vast and I have never struggled to find a perfect match. His cooking style is what I would call classic English with a focus on the finest possible ingredients. His skills span the full spectrum of cooking, from the bread to the superb desserts and what I particularly appreciate is the fact that you know it is him cooking in that kitchen, not some unnamed team member, and it is often he who will help serve you. The wine list is what I call a good size, with a good selection personally chosen by them and Anthea's knowledge is impressive. Overall, my wife and I would rate this as one of the finest restaurants in the South West. I am not sure how much more success Duncan and Anthea want, I know that this is in part a lifestyle choice for them, and I would rue the day that I had to book six months in advance or buy a lottery ticket to eat there, but regardless of this I like to add my voice to growing number of admirers and challenge anyone not to be impressed.

It all started so well. A warm welcome from the charming hostess; some wonderful food which exceeded expectations, but let down by the churlish chef who was clearly doing us a favour by allowing us to attend his presence in his restaurant. Visited here with my husband during a recent visit to Devon. I found this gem of a restaurant on TripAdvisor and am so glad we gave it a go. The experience from start to finish was amazing. The service was warm and welcoming but non-intrusive and the food in my opinion was Michelin Star standard. I had Scallops, Beef and Soufflé whilst my husband had Quail, Seabass and the Creme Brûlée. All washed down with a lovely bottle of wine recommended by the owner after we’d listed our likes. We have eaten at a number of high-end restaurants and this was right up there with them. It doesn't get the evening off to a great start when you wait well over half an hour for your order to be taken (with only two other tables in action). The nibbles with the aperos took even longer. The risotto-like amuse bouche was terrific but an open ravioli of rabbit with lemon and parmesan was really twice as big a starter should have been. I was struggling to finish it long after everyone else had polished off more appropriately sized starters and the rabbit served in big, clumsy chunks, not fine cut, as might have worked better between the pasta sheets, was tough, dry and overcooked. The venison loin was also overcooked (I thought everyone served venison pink!) and came with an unadvertised slab of fried foie gras, which didn't really belong in the dish. The one true success was the dessert of warm choclolate pithivier with orange and ginger ice cream. But the desire to return, when I first reviewed this restaurant, has definitely taken a knock.

Gordon Ramsay, Rick Stein, Nathan Outlaw, Michael Caines: the list of brilliant chefs who operate in Devon and Cornwall is an illustrious one. Those in the know add the name of Duncan Walker, who cooks superlative food in The Old Inn at Drewsteignton near Exeter. To be precise, it is 13.5 miles from where I live. Hoorah! Duncan is not a shouty chef; his dishes are understated but always pack a punch. He mixes ingredients and flavours in such a subtle way that sometimes it is difficult to detect what this technically gifted man is up to. Our lunch was a triumph. Duncan came out to meet us and escorted us into the 17th century building, which still looks like a private house. The reception room is huge. Given that there aren’t many covers, I wondered why Duncan and Anthea didn’t put a few more tables in here. The answer, as Duncan explained, is that once the large front door opens, in winter the wind and cold would blast diners out of their seats. And so to the lunch itself. As we perused the menu Duncan brought the amuse bouche: cheese Parmesan snaps, Pechora and chicken liver parfait. Each was a little triumph and set the scene for a memorable meal. I ordered a bottle of Saint-Veran 2013 Domaine des Maillettes at £30. It was a little too chilly to start with, but that was soon rectified. We were then brought a rabbit risotto appetiser which was also memorable, along with the buttermilk and rosemary breads. We has realised by this stage that this would be a restaurant we would be coming back to time and time again. Our starters were: 1) sautéed foie gras with apple caramelised in honey and sauternes 2) warm salad of scallops, potato, basil and pine nutsMain courses: we both had grilled fillets of brill, ragout of lobster asparagus and leeks.Dessert: strawberries glazed with champagne sabayon, lemon and basil.Coffee and petit fours. The approach is delicate; the taste delicious. What we have here is someone who is creative without going over the top. Duncan clearly cares about food and wants to give his customers a fantastic experience, which is precisely what we had.The lunch menu costs £32 for three courses (or two plus coffee and petit fours). Dinner comes in at £52. We will return, as we promised ourselves. Thank you, Duncan and Anthea.

This is a very small restaurant in a stone built 17th century former coaching inn, in the village of Drewsteignton, between Exeter and Okehampton. The atmosphere reflects this history, and provides a warm and intimate setting in which to enjoy the epicurean delights provided by Duncan the chef. It's fine dining, and priced as such, but well worth it for that special occasion. In between your main courses Duncan emerges from the kitchen with unexpected amuse bouches to pique your gastronomic interest. Friday lunchtime is more affordable than the evening a la carte menu, and amongst other things, and it's a great place to eat fish - not the most commonly available choice on Dartmoor.

The reports of “temperamental” behaviour from chef Duncan made us feel slightly wary, but we found him entirely pleasant and friendly; his front of house lady (wife/partner?) even more so – a nice dry sense of humour that established a personality without ever intruding.Four of us went on a quiet midweek winter’s night and had the place to ourselves, with aperos and coffee on armchairs and sofa by the fire. It felt almost as if we had rented a holiday cottage with some very good staff!A remarkable amuse bouche packed an extraordinary amount of complex flavour into a tiny morsel that perfectly did its job of waking up the taste buds. (How often do appetisers really do that?)Then for me a dish that was billed very starkly as chicken liver, foie gras and apple. In fact there were five different meat elements: foie gras terrine, pan-fried foie gras, chicken liver parfait, fried chicken liver and one more variant that I forget, plus various variations on the apple theme, A huge amount of work and very successful as a series of mini dishes. For my main course, “ris de veau” was a real treat, as it’s rarely seen on menus nowadays, even in France.Slightly less successful was the dessert of “chocolate, chocolate and lime” (apparently, like most of the chef’s desserts, inspired by childhood sweets). For me, the intense acidity of the lime sorbet jarred a little with the mellowness of the two chocolate elements, including a small hot soufflé. I envied the big blackcurrant souffles ordered by everyone else. I had been discouraged by the accompanying liquorice ice cream (what kind of sweet shop did Duncan go to??) but apparently this went very well.An interesting choice of wines including some interesting oddities from the new world – my first Argentinian Pinot Noir, for instance – outstanding at a very reasonable price.I very much liked the fact that both dining rooms were full set up with welcoming candles etc even though only one was going to be used.I’m hovering between 4 and 5 stars but I know I’d go again like a shot on another visit to the area which tells me it’s more of a 5.

This was so totally unexpected and so very fortuitous even a week later it is hard to comprehend how well this evening came together. Arriving in the village late following a six hour drive from Yorkshire: and on our way to meet friends in Oakhampton I literally fell through the front door into what looked like a private lounge.A brief conversation later, and apologies all round, and my wife and I were very soon unpacked in our room and back down again for a drink or two around a very cosy fire. A menu of such delights was passed to us that we knew there was no need to venture out again this evening. Joining a rather exclusive gathering of four in the dining room a little later it soon became very apparent that we had found a gem of tranquility in this quiet part of Devon. Our dining experience was beyond compare and my only serious concern is that in adding to the previous posts our little oasis of fine company and finer dining may be harder to come by for over popularity shortly.I'll take a chance, and now you should. Reading other comments it seems you can dine here without having to stay (although the loss will be yours if you don't have the full breakfast) I imagine too you can stay here without dining, but again the loss will be all yours (more so as there is only a small pub offering other food in the village and you can get that anywhere.)So come here, dine in style, go back and tell your friends. I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

My wife and I have been coming here for years, indeed we originally discovered Duncan in Chagford, probably twenty years ago or more! All I can say is that we have never left Duncan's restaurant with anything but the highest praise in our minds - the food is always perfect as is the service by his partner Anthea. As another review said, it is like visiting old friends, we are always warmly welcomed and feel that our custom is much appreciated. I think it says a lot that this is the only restaurant we keep coming back to - if we are celebrating any event, we don't even think of visiting anywhere else, and I can say that we have sampled most of Devon's finer restaurants from Gidleigh Park downwards together with many elsewhere in the country. Indeed I would say that Duncan's food bears good comparison with the aforementioned, only at a fraction of the price. I did notice a couple of poor reviews - one from someone who said they would prefer to stay at a Premier Inn. Really?? If you pay any attention to people such as this, you will be missing out on a real treat.

His marriage of ingredients and skill shine on every plate. He's an incredible chef and the food was truly delicious.Would count myself lucky to go again.

Duncan and Anthea have endlessly strived to provide the best.He is a magician and she is a perfect hostess so together they have a unique combination that their guests love and enjoy. When you eat food that is cooked by Duncan you wonder why you cannot do this yourself...the answer is because he is the most inventive and brilliant chef who is a perfectionist...no one I know has ever been disappointed on dining here or infact staying for bed and breakfast. Anthea is so professional and delightful with each guest, therefore the mixture of this team is sensational. If you have never been....go!

We were invited to join friends and their family for a significant birthday celebration at the Old Inn. The venue is fairly small, but incredibly intimate and cosy, which meant that the lunch celebration was a private event. I cannot comment on the menu choices in general as it had been previously pre-arranged by our friends with the chef to suit everyones individual likes and dislikes. So between them, friends and chef, the choice was stunning and imaginative, which I know our friends won't mind me saying, is down to the fact that the Old Inn boasts a brilliantly creative chef. For us certainly, enjoying good food is to have food presented and served in a way that you don't eat at home, with tastes and complimentary flavours being new and memorable. You want to enjoy something so much that you wish you had the time, energy and know-how to create it at home, every day; which is exactly the experience we had at the Old Inn. The Inn is run by a lovely friendly couple, who worked incredibly hard to make the occasion a truly special day to remember. I cannot comment on the rooms, but our friends had booked the entire place out and loved it. Hence, highly recommended by us.

We do not normally need to check out this amazing restaurant on trip advisor, but viewed this posting because we visited the Old Inn last night for our anniversary and a couple dining there from outside of the area who had never been before, had told us about it, but decided not to be put off by what they had read after reading all the other reviews on this site and were delighted they had disregarded it! They absolutely loved it! We dine here several times a year and have done since Duncan Walker and Anthea Christmas opened it, having followed Duncan from his previous, also excellent, restaurant. This is the place we always go for every special occasion and although we do go to other highly regarded restaurants, we never have such a fantastic meal or experience as we do here, without exception. Despite the fact that our visits are intermittent, perhaps 3 or 4 times a year, they always remember the wines we drink, our little quirks and very often even what we ate on the previous occasion. Their welcome is always warm and friendly and on occasions when we have gone as just a couple, we find that other couples in the small intimate dining room engage in conversation and it feels like a private dinner party. Whenever we have taken friends with us, they have been amazed at the wonderful food and enjoyable experience and friendly banter. We cannot see how anyone could fail to be delighted by a visit to the Old Inn.

I would like to be able to write that we had an enjoyable stay with some wonderful food at the Old Inn, but unfortunately as we were asked to leave before sampling either that is not possible. To set the scene....I had booked for dinner 1 evening in Chagford and was looking for somewhere to stay for 2 nights that would be both nearby and enjoyed a good reputation for food.Hence a call to the Old Inn, at which point the lady said as I wanted 2 nights but would dine only the once a stay would not be possible as the rooms were reserved for diners only.Fair enough, although 10 minutes later she called back to say that upon reflection no problem and they would be delighted for us to visit.Fast forward to our arrival where we were met by the chef/owner in the lounge with no greeting, no introduction and after curtly confirming our name pointed us in the direction of his wife who showed us to our room, which was perfectly adequate.Over a cup of tea downstairs we tried a little conversation but the whole atmosphere was rather stilted and frosty. No problem, we were there for the food and not undying friendship. As we were on our way out for a walk my wife asked if the chef had watched any of the Masterchef series on TV, to which he petulantly replied why would he do that? My wife responded in a joking fashion, you never know you might learn something. This did not go down well and he said that our meal would be a problem that evening. After returning from our walk I asked for some ice, both for the water that was in our room and the remnants of some fruit juice left over from our journey, something I was questioned about.I was also questioned as to why when I requested that we have a table set away from the heat of the wood burning stove and told that tables were not allocated to anyone.A little later, a knock at the door and the chef was there saying we could only stay for 1 night as we had insulted him twice. Once by referral to Masterchef and secondly by bringing our own drinks to our room. He also said that he would have been doing us a favour by allowing us a 2nd night anyhow, at which I pointed out that it was a favour I was paying for. This was all too much for him and he then said he didn't need our money and we had to go immediately, which of course we did without another word being said. So, always willing to learn, a note to myself. Do not have the temerity of attempting conversation with greater beings. Do not antagonise by asking for ice. Do not inconvenience by expressing a seating preference and, finally, do not forget that hoteliers the world over are doing me a favour. As I said, all very, very strange!

I've visited the Old Inn a few times and Duncan has produced absolutely outstanding food every single time. The scallops and pork belly were incredible and the Dartmoor Loin of Lamb was delicious, but these were both out done by the Blackberry souffle for dessert. The Old Inn is a very small restaurant and as such the service each time is incredibly personal. Anthea who runs the front of house in very friendly and always welcoming. It's certinally one for dog lovers too as the two resident golden retrievers welcome you with wagging tales and sticks as you cross the threshold. They almost uptage the food...almost!

This place is tiny, but incredibly well put-together and managed. We stayed here after a friend's wedding in Exeter and ate in the restaurant. From start to finish, the experience was fantastic. We started off with pre-dinner drinks in the lounge/bar area in front of a cosy wood-burning stove. The restaurant only has 17 covers and the owners, Duncan and Anthea do everything. Duncan is the chef and Anthea is front of house and sommelier! The food is delicious - we had three courses plus a couple of chef's additions. Everything was so fresh and seasonal and you can tell that Duncan is incredibly passionate about the food that he cooks. The wines that Anthea recommended worked very well too. We can't wait to go back!

It is always such a pleasure dining at the Old Inn with Duncan and Anthea. It starts with an exciting menu from which it is difficult to make a choice. The choice stems from Duncan's love of food, cooking and presentation. At the same time Anthea looks after you so attentively and discreetly. Last night 18 December 2014 was no exception. We took some friends who own the Villa de Mazamet, France and they were enthralled by it all. It was their first time at the Old Inn. The meal was absolutely delicious. It is always amazing that Duncan finds the time to bring the dishes to the table and explain their features. It makes the whole experience so personal. Visiting the Old Inn is rather like a personal dinner party. They only take limited number of diners so you need to book early. Inside it is extremely cosy and comfortable. At no time is there any rushing about. But then that is the quality both Duncan and Anthea bring to the occasion. Our next experience is next week with Christmas Day lunch. Now that it is going to be a mouthwatering event !!!If you are looking for somewhere to dine then choose the Old Inn. There is no chance of you being disappointed. It is the finest dining restaurant, with a unique ambiance and atmosphere you are likely to enjoy anywhere in the UK.

We just returned from a four night visit to Dartmoor and wanted to comment on the outstanding evening we had at the Old Inn. Our B&B hosts at the Frogmill nearby recommended it as their favorite and I can certainly concur. Andrea the hostess greeted us and welcomed us for a drink by the fireplace while we reviewed the menu and made our selections. We were pleased to become acquainted with the other couple dining with them that evening and after moving to the comfortable and intimate dining room continued our visit. The meal was amazing in quality and presentation. Crab lasagne starter and poached guinea fowl entree excellent. Blackberry souffle with licorice ice cream to finish. Wow! Don't miss this if you are in the Dartmoor area. Book well in advance - small and intimate setting - they devote their time and energy to a small number of guests and you will feel that you had a very special evening!

I loved this place. It is located in a beautiful village, the thick old walls, stone floors, crackling wood stove and placid dogs are welcoming; candles flicker against the window panes as the sky darkens behind the view of the lovely old church. The service is friendly, helpful and competent, the food a triumph. Quality ingredients, sympathetically treated and expertly cooked, presented with accompaniments that enhanced the main element, rather than shouting distractedly for attention. It takes skill, taste and confidence to cook in this way. I look forward to a return visit.

If you are going for lunch (set menu £29.50) take care not to take up the proprietor's offer of alternative dishes from the dinner menu (£46.50). We were charged the full £46.50 for having a different starter to the two on the lunch menu, despite taking mains and pud from lunch menu. We queried the £17 additional charge for a single different starter and after some haggling our bill was eventually reduced from £182 to £180 - a mere £2!

firstly there seem to be two entries for the same place, The Old Inn and Old Inn!I visited Drewsteignton some years back and stayed at the Drewe Arms, we read the sorry history of this lovely pub in Trip Advisor but also noticed it was now open again so we hoped to stay. It is open but not for accommodation yet so we walked across the road and checked into the Old Inn. The room we had was fine, it had a king sized bed, nice bathroom and WiFi, I therefore disagree with the previous reviewer, this is a restaurant with rooms, not a hotel so you should not expect too much although at £100 a night it is a little dear. The food of course, as you can see from all the other reviews, was excellent, my only criticism is that there is only one red and one white wine available by the glass, my wife did not want to drink and I did not want a whole bottle so this did limit the options. So if you want some very good food in nice friendly surroundings the The Old Inn is the place to go.

From the moment the door opened as we approached to be welcomed by our enigmatic host, this delightful restaurant provided an outstanding night out. Set in an old Inn (as the name might suggest) with dining rooms filling previous rooms, you walk in to the reception hall and enjoy a drink in front of a log fire whilst your table is prepared. The food was just superb, genuine breathtaking brilliance. Everything was cooked to perfection from scallops and fish to sweetbreads and ox tail. The dessert of plate of raspberry was in itself a true show stopper - worth the trip alone. Whilst we did not stay here I dare say this is also a fabulous experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough, it may well be a little off the beaten track but that makes it all the more welcome. I would drive for many hours to get back here (although would probably stay over because the wine was also extremely good!). In terms of quality of food and indeed service, for the price paid, I think this restaurant would be very difficult to better.

Everything so understated and absolutely delicious. In the morning a knock on the door heralded tea with the lightest croissants I have ever eaten. The breakfast was beautifully cooked, especially the tomatoes. Everything about this restaurant is just right. You enter to a warm and comfortable sitting room with large soft chairs and a log-burner. There were two dogs and a cat to add to the cosy feel, but they just stayed sleeping. The dining rooms are small and tasteful, there are only four or five tables in all so never really busy or fast paced. Then there was the food, one of the best meals for quite some time. Having stayed last year and not got around to reviewing, I had to express my delight in finding everything, from the lovely comfortable room, to afternoon tea in front of the roaring wood burner and the amazing dinner, just as good if not better. I chose Gnocchi and chanterelle to start, Monkfish with aubergine for main and Iced Nougat with chocolate and glazed orange for dessert. My partner quietly tucked into the Pork, which he said was just amazing and a sublime Blackberry souffle. Then back to relax in front of the fire with coffee and the freshest mint tea. In the morning, taste buds were again in for a treat. A fantastic Full English and Yogurt with fresh fruits, toast and coffee set us up for the day.
