Oishii Japanese Restaurant in East Hertfordshire

Had dinner here tonight with family. Left disappointed the rolls all had more veg than fish in. The fish tasted like it had been frozen. Seabass was disgusting. I’ve been here a lot lately with friends and family. But after today I won’t be returning. 5 pound for a small bottle of beer and then adding service charge when we spoke once to the server to order and once to pay is also not on. Seems greed has take. Over here so won’t be returning.

I went in to order a takeaway. Luckily I checked the bag before leaving. One of 4 ítems was missing PLUS I had been overcharged by £18!!! Check your orders and bills people….

Tasty food. Warning about food poisoning on the inside cover of the menu (no doubt an instruction from the lawyers) is not terribly appetising. On asking the staff who gets the 10% automatic service charge, they said that 5% goes to staff and 5% goes to the owner. I suggest if the owner wants 5% on the margin, they put up the prices 5% on the menu and take their chances on customers choosing not to eat there. I hate this practice but sadly it’s all too common. If it’s not the case, I suggest the staff are better informed. The food was lovely and we’d go again.

What a lovely restaurant. Couldn't fault anything. Given 4 stars as, although we expect to pay a fair price for a decent meal out, we felt this was slighty on the pricey side. Friends had mentioned it was a little more expensive than you'd expect. That said, the food was absolutely delicious & beautifully presented. The service was very good, friendly, attentive & quick. Will visit again & would recommend. Thank you Oishii

The food and service is amazing.

Lovely atmosphere and great food. We all had seabass which was delicious. There was a little mix up with our order which was promptly resolved with the utmost care and courtesy. Definitely a new favourite place. I had a lovely quiet evening with a couple of friends.

Fabulous food could not fault it

Another delicious lunch at Oishii. Been coming here for years and everytime they deliver. This time Mamion and Kat were the servers. So lovely; great service. The bento box lunches are such good value and the quality is excellent.

I went for dinner here with my partner last night and it was fantastic. The food was delicious, the wine was great - I would highly recommend the Katsu Curry! We are new to the area and definitely will be coming back here. At the end of the night I left my bag at the restaurant and the team were kind enough to drop it to my house that evening. Could not recommend enough!

I just ordered delivery, and although I will say the sushi is pretty good, it’s by no means amazing, and it’s overpriced compared to other much better restaurants. I ordered Ikura nigiri which is salmon roe and they charge £4.99 for one piece - they sent tobiko which is flying fish roe (the little red roe) and inferior and much cheaper. I called the restaurant and they spoke to the chef who said they no longer sell ikura . So I asked why is it on the menu - they said manager hasn’t taken it off. Then I remembered , we came here last feb for Valentine’s Day to eat in and the exact same thing happened. On principal I find this very insulting to the customers assuming people don’t know the difference it’s like ordering tuna sashimi and being served tinned tuna. Not to mention this is ripping people off. The food otherwise is decent but I won’t be coming back for this reason.

Excellent sushi, lovely staff and nice atmosphere.

The food was absolutely incredible! We had the duck rolls, chicken gyoza, vegetable tempura and katsu Don. However, once we had finished our food, we were forgotten about. Nobody came to offer us a dessert menu or the bill, and we spent longer sitting waiting than we did eating! Shame about the miserable lady serving us but the food was fantastic. Next time will be ordering a takeaway I think!

Ive moved to Hertford over a year now and so far my experience with Oishii was 5/5 until today when I’ve received something what I can’t even describe. Rolls without filling? Plate complete mess? What is this for 40 pound??? Never ever again!!!!!!

Everything about this restaurant was amazing. The food portion was perfect and tasted great, the atmosphere felt authentic, and the staff were incredibly friendly. If you are ever in Hertford I highly recommend checking out Oishii. 10/10 place, will be eating here again.

We was here yesterday and can't recommend this place enough. The food was delicious. Can't wait to come back.

Sushi was really good, a bit warm for my liking but overall very good service!

Came here for a date night with my other half before seeing an orchestra at The All Saints Church. Had Chicken Yakitori and Gyozas for starter Sumiaki Serloin Steak and Salmon Donburi for main. Sides were Kimchi, Wakame Salad, Egg and Garlic Rice and Mixed Japanese Salad. Drinks: Sparkling Water and Sapporo. Overall, the food, atmosphere and service was great. The gent serving us was amazing and paid close attention with our order as well as asking if we had any specific dietary requirements. The only thing that was off putting about the evening was a pair of teen girls sitting there giggling and stabbing their food with chopsticks creating a bit of a scene. Not really how you should conduct yourself in a small restaurant, but what can you do? Total cost £71 (including 10% service charge) Will definitely return in the future

Hadn’t been back from Japan for long before going here and honestly I felt like I was right back there. Food was amazing quality, and surprisingly affordable for how good the food was! Going again in a few weeks and probably again after that

Really disappointing this time. Bland hot pots of udon noodles, sushi was on the edge of passable. Restaurant was cold (lucky for me was sitting on a heater). Only good thing was the great waiter. Lovely chap.

Fantastic, fresh & authentic sushi. The atmosphere was great and we all enjoyed ourselves very much. Also the price was reasonable when considering the quality.

First time for us here..had such a lovely meal... Staff so friendly, our server was friendly and knowledgeable. There wasn't a dish we didn't like. Would definitely return.

The food was not up to much compared with other Japanese restaurants. Poor quality and overpriced.

The miso bowl I had, had a grimy lid. Food though was lovely and fresh. I'd go again no bother :)

Unprofessional, working hours show open, drive 30 minutes to buy £100+ worth of Sushi and Sashimi and i find it closed. Never again. PS. due to the owner response, denying talking to me on Friday 29th of September, I have spoken to the mother and to the two sons (if they were the sons) while they was outside Don't take me wrong. Food is excellent!! I have nothing to complain about the food! And i have ordered before, however, if I look on Google and the shop shows is open, I called twice to make sure and nobody answered, I think by common sense that the shop is open and busy due to be the only Japanese sushi/sashimi open at that time in that area!! Please adjust your time because I drove 30 min to go finding the place closed and 30 min to go back having to drive another 30 min to buy somewhere else !!!!

This is a great place to eat, but avoid at all cost ordering a takeaway, meal was an hour late and the meal arrived cold. The soup dish had spilled into the bag, so no soup. When I complained, there was zero comprehension that my evening had been disrupted and complete denial that the one of the meals was not edible I.e. it was in a bag. The owner avoided at all costs to speak with me and simple shut me down with an I don't care attitude. She needs to try harder one star. In addition, the staff that took the compliant laughed and mocked my complaint as they out the phone down.

Used to love this place. Quality went down a lot. Service has never been their forte, but the food made up for it. Not anymore I’m afraid.

Taken my parents and friends here a few times and never disappoints. the food is always excellent and the service second to none. while it can be quiet its a hidden gem in the centre of town well worth a try. look forward to returning soon

Great food, friendly service. Owner Elle gave great recommendations - we came in for a quick lunch as the lunch menu looked good with bento boxes etc but ended up getting a sushi boat! Fish tasted really fresh which is a must. No immediate parking outside (only max 30 min stays) but there was a parking garage round the corner so it was still quite convenient.

A quaint little restaurant tucked away off the street. The food is always impeccable and the staff friendly. The prices are reasonable and the service is always pretty quick.

Two staff at once to begin with then nothing. Some spectacular dishes to other tables but menu doesn't hint at that.

Incredible sushi. I’ve never been so blissfully full in my entire life. Would 100000000% recommend. Also the server Callum was wonderful. Deserves a raise! He was so kind and friendly. Made us feel very welcome. Also such a lovely atmosphere. I felt extremely relaxed on top of eating insanely delicious sushi.

Go there regularly to eat. Excellent food range and clear pricing. Highly recommend the Lunch time menu.

Looking at other reviews we were unlucky. My beef was cooked so as to be hard and tasteless, My wife's chicken was also cooked to the point of being rather dry. The rice was also overcooked. The food was nicely presented, and the staff friendly and helpful. The atmosphere would be much nicer after dark, but on a hot day with the front open to the street, with the tables on the opposite side of the street providing quite a lot of noise, and very bright light coming in, the internal decor was somewhat defeated.

We visited recently and ordered a big variety of the sushi- all was amazing! The service was prompt and friendly, would definitely visit again.

I'm my humble opinion, the best sushi I've had. I've visited this place years ago and has been the high mark for me for sushi. I always wanted to return and enjoy the food again. I had a chance to return as I was in the area and it was as great as before. Still the high mark for me, in my humble opinion.

A very rare find outside of London. With great tasting sushi at a reasonable price. Between 6 of us £45 each left us very full and satisfied. The only issue was quite slow service however it was a busy Saturday night. Perfect otherwise

Hair in my kimchi, manager was absolutely awful in dealing with our complaint, told us we ordered too much food and thats why we aren't eating the food with HAIR IN IT

Food is really good. That’s why we kept coming back. Unfortunately since they re-opened after the pandemic the service has been slow, inattentive and sometimes argumentative. If you have a table of more than 2 no one will remember what you ordered. Drinks, starters and mains arrive at random. Staff could use some training on table service and at least basic knowledge of Japanese food (for example a difference between teriyaki and yakitori sauce). It’s a shame as Ella’s really nice and I wish her all the success but for the reasons mentioned above I can no longer recommend this restaurant.

Ooshii is always excellent. Superb quality sushi. Also excellent chicken teriyaki, chilli squid, chicken gyoza. We had really tasty yaki soba too. Also the desserts were lovely especially the mochi. The staff are friendly and efficient. I have always found the standard of food here consistently excellent and very authentic sushi and sashimi.

Ordered food and it shows up over 2 hours late. I’m never ordering from or going to them ever again. Very unhelpful customer service, did not offer any freebies or discount to make up for the delay

Great sushi, duck roll was perfect. Beef roll is a good idea but in practice was cooked a little too rare for the cut of meat, a bit too chewy for sushi. Would work a lot better if cooked in some sort of sauce. Yuzu sake is great and can be bought in many places if you find you really like it like I did. Staff were very attentive although as per usual with the UK it takes some time to request the bill, then additional time to actually pay (as opposed to receiving bill and payment unit at the same time). But that's just personal preference. Will definitely be back as there's plenty of great stuff on the menu that I still need to try!

Good food, but service was poor. Had to ask for missing items that were ordered. Staff took an empty plate from the center of the table, leaning over food we were eating at the time, and towards the end, kept wanting to take the plates we were still eating from. It wasn't even a busy Saturday night, so there was no reason to be rushed.

I’ve ordered delivery frequently from this restaurant. The food has always been pretty good however every time I have ordered it has been minimum 1-2 hours later than the estimated delivery time says. Literally every single time. I don’t know what’s going on with the delivery process but it needs to be looked at.

Gorgeous food but service was appalling slow. I'd finished my main before my friends main arrived. Asked for bill twice, then asked for dessert menu so I could have a pud before the bill arrived. Neither arrived and had to ask again for bill. Better service in the Wimpy at the Old Pond. Walk past and go to Old Siam, superior in every way.

Best sushi I've been to and I love it here

Wasn’t expecting to be impressed but the food was amazing. The rolls were amazing, The black cod was an absolute surprise. I’d say on par with top London restaurant versions but the presentation did let it down. When it arrived I thought oh dear but wow I was so wrong. I’m looking forward to returning.

Asked for genmaicha and they had none! Already a bad start. My partner and I ordered a bento box each plus a veggie tempura. Food didn't take too long to arrive but unfortunately the quality is below par. The sushi was poorly cut (especially for the tuna) and one was stale/extremely fishy. The tempura batter was too thick and not crispy enough. The staff were attentive and the restaurant is quite decent but the food is sadly subpar.

If you want to wow your friends, bring them here! Elle and her team are turning out exceptional food. I eat here regularly and have yet to experience any reduction in quality. It’s often very busy, so sometimes you might need to wait an extra couple of minutes for your drinks, however people need to understand that lots of little dishes take more time to deliver to the tables than one main plate (as per other cuisines) and the staff work really hard to satisfy everyone. 10/10.

Thanks so much Elle and team for the amazing sushi and japanese food. Having been to Japan it felt authentic, the food was fresh, tasty and there was a nice range of different types of sushi to select from - plus some great tempura and sashimi too. The vibe in this little gem of a place is great, and being right in middle of Hertford, with free parking I might add within a short walk, it is somewhere I will come back to again and again.

We ordered for a takeaway and we’re served raw chicken when we asked for a refund or to be reimbursed we were told that we’re liars. Will never go back

Awful experience gone downhill used to love this place. They delivered me 3 slithers of beef in a yaki soba but worse was the chicken starter and katsu which was gooey and pink it was either raw or so old and reheated it changed colour. The owner refused a refund called me a liar would not let me speak, hung up on me and then disconnected the phones and proceeded to block me on facebook…would not of given this food to a wild animal

Nice food. Not great service at the time we visited. Waiter to busy oggling young girls. We waited 30 minutes for my daughter's meal while we all had ours. Ignored for 20 minutes when we asked for the bill. £13 extra costs, service charge. on the bill, this I feel should be optional like at other restaurants. Hopefully things have improved there now. Service charge high!!!!

Last Saturday we came for a Really delicious Japanese meal. Tasty sushi, great ramen and the lovely staff, we had a young lad, phil who took our order and was very polite, and with fast service it made a lovely evening

One of my favourite places in Hertford and it never disappoints. I’ve been here douzens of times and the food and service is always spot on. Beautiful food….I’ve eaten a lot of sushi and Japanese in lots of places and this is still great quality and value. Well worth a visit.

Came here on Saturday 9th July, the food is absolutely superb and is let down by the front of house staff and quality of the service. We ordered drinks with a young lad waiter, then 10mins later ordered our food, starters arrived but no drinks. We had to chase another member of staff for the drinks which arrived shortly after. Having enjoying our food, we asked to order some more sushi and had a look through the menu only to be ignored for 20mins, at which point we got our bill and left. The staff need more training and to have a presence in the restaurant, for a Saturday night it wasnt busy and they really struggled.

The venue was quirky, the staff friendly and the food was tasty. We enjoyed our evening and our food. We were not in a hurry and so the slower service, as they were very busy with take away deliveries as well as the customers in the restaurant, was not a bother.

Food was lovely! Service could do with a tiny improvement. Our waiter got our order wrong and them blamed it on ourselves, bringing the plate he got wrong right at the end of our lunch and refusing to take it back and blatantly refusing to exclude it from our bill

Decided to try for the first time last night for our anniversary. The setting was poor with tacky decor. We ordered a couple of starters and ordered the Japanese wine which was the most expensive white on the menu to come out with the starters. The tempura and gyoza was good although they came out separately. After a while the waiter said they were having problems with the wine. We said we would wait for the mains for them to sort out the wine. The wine then came to the table with cork floating in it, both the bottles weren’t good. So we eventually had to order a different bottle and that came with the main. The duck with raspberry was good. The Katsu curry was ok but the chicken was tasteless. Wouldn’t go back.

Been here a few times and thought we tried the lunch menu but it's the same as the main menu with main menu prices. Rather pointless, not sure about going again.
