Number Eight in Torridge

Quite frankly, one of the best restaurant experiences my wife and I have ever had. The food was exceptional - a superb menu where each course blended beautifully with the next. Everything was put onto the plate for a reason and each mouthful was a joy to behold. The service was also excellent - staggering to consider the restaurant is a two person operation who work exceptionally hard to provide a brilliant experience for each customer. Well done guys - you’ve nailed it. We can’t wait to come back again!

How do they do it! Chloe front of house Joshua chef - just the two of them. What an amazing evening from start to finish. The food was outstanding- each of the six courses created to deliver tastes to feed the soul.

Absolutely loved our meal in this stylish resturant. Chloe was so welcoming and we were seated immediately. Great decor - very rich colours - Service was great Food was DELICIOUS. Great flavours - definitely a MUST VISIT if you like fine dining in comfortable surroundings.

Last night was our third visit to this restaurant, this time to celebrate my 80th birthday. Over many years I have travelled the world on business and leisure and have eaten in many amazing restaurants. I cannot think of a restaurant that I would choose over this one. The food, the sevice and the ambience are second to none. Keep up the good work and we will be back again and again.

All the accolades Number 8 gets are completely deserved. The cheery welcome from Chloe was just the start of a wonderful evening, with a menu that could rival any of the many fine-dining restaurants we have eaten at. The service was friendly, unhurried and perfectly in keeping with the calm relaxed atmosphere. The food was amazing, with every one of the six courses a delight to the eye, and a treat for the taste buds. Josh, you are a genius to come up with such beautiful and tasty dishes. The wine pairing was perfectly judged, with each glass an elegant complement to the food. We both agreed that this was easily as good a meal as we have ever eaten anywhere. Thank you for a memorable experience Chloe and Josh have obviously worked hard to achieve this standard, and we can only wish them every success, and look forward to returning again soon.

The food was amazing, the service was so relaxed, a very enjoyable evening, we will be returning to experience more delights from a different month.

We were on hols in Bideford and chanced upon Number Eight whilst walking from our cottage. Thankfully Chloe responded immediately to my email asking for availability on a Thursday night, which also happened to coincide with our wedding anniversary, as the menu looked amazing. We were not disappointed from start to finish. It's such a great operation, with Chloe looking after the customers, whilst Josh works his magic in the background. We've been lucky enough to dine in several fine dining restaurants and this was at least on a par with some of the Michelin establishments we've visited. The food, drinks, service, and decor are all awesome. I really hope this restaurant is full regularly as the owners clearly have put their hearts and souls into it, and deserves success through the year. What an amazing end to our holiday in North Devon. Thanks to Chloe and Josh, you're brilliant!

We arrived early for some drinks and they were very accommodating. The cocktails were well mixed and Chloe was a lovely host. The food was delicious, all courses held their own and were a pleasure to eat - it seems unbelievable that they change their menu every month! We will be back 👌

Absolutely brilliant meal . We picked a lovely evening and had drinks outside overlooking the river. Excellent cocktail and nice chilled beer. Lots of time to enjoy the sunshine and look at the menu . The menu is a trust the chef tempting array of dishes and we had been asked about allergies and preferences beforehand . We moved to the dining room and were delighted by each and every course . We had coffee in the lounge and loved the chefs take on custard creams . The service was impeccable , friendly informative and relaxed . This restaurant is incredibly well run by two very hardworking people . So glad we have discovered this wonderful restaurant for very special occasions.

Wow! Just a shame we don't live a bit closer. Chloe at front of house gave a very warm welcome, which set the scene for a relaxed, and enjoyable evening. It felt like we'd known her for many years, not just met that evening. The service was remarkable and courses perfectly timed considering it is run by just the two of them! Food was both interesting and delicious, and for a multi course taster menu of this quality, full of local produce, it was terrific value. It seems they have pitched it just right, as they seem to be regularly booked out with both locals and visitors to North Devon. A wonderful restaurant with superb food. Chloe was very welcoming and friendly and welcomed us using our first names. Our only regret is that we do not live closer. We will definitely visit again.

This is the third time we have been in the last six months. This was for my birthday dinner and it was absolutely impeccable. The food is so flavourful with a combination of textures. You can see that a lot of hard work has gone into balancing these out, the result is heavenly. Chloe and Joshua are a fantastic team, and just make the atmosphere somewhere you don’t want to leave. The cocktails are delicious, throughly recommend the Campfire. We’re already booked in again for next month! This is such a gem of a place, the best in Bideford….just book it!

Amazing first impression as you walk through the front door with a warm wood fire glowing away , lovely interesting decor , bar looks great , costy seats around the fireplace , lead to our large table for dinner , we enjoyed every minute of the experience , well presented and flavoursome food . Visited number eight for the first time this evening & WOW! It did not disappoint one bit! The decor is absolutely beautiful, We we’re greeted by Chloe who seated us and took our jackets! We waited no time before she came back to take our drinks order and gave us the details of what to expect. The food was absolutely stunning in presentation, flavour & portion! It was the most beautiful mix giving us a taster of such variety, I honestly can’t recommend a restaurant enough! Thank you so much to Josh & Chloe for a beautiful evening.

Perfection , from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. I recommend reading their mission statement in full on their website before booking, it sets your expectations ensuring you won’t be disappointed. The hosts are first class in their respective crafts comfortable seating. The food just amazing full of flavour and inspired recipes well done . Portion sizes perfect for a tasting menu. Wines and drinks in general fantastic range. We went for the wine pairing option well worth it. The entire experience was 5 star and they are from my home county of Cornwall. Number 8 never fails to deliver as experienced once again to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Starting with the warm welcome from Chloe through to the excellent food prepared by Josh using top quality ingredients, all beautifully presented. Is it any wonder we continue to highly recommend this to friends who want to treat themselves.

I took my husband here for his birthday dinner and it was unforgettable. The food was incredibly well prepared with so many different elements to them. The portion sizes were perfect, the place was visually beautiful. So glad such a gem is not that far from us. We have already planned to visit again. A credit to the owners! Great for a couples night out or with a group of friend who appreciate fine dining.

Another excellent meal at the best restaurant on the area. First time for us at their lovely new home across the river. Food always outstanding and Chloe does a fabulous job on front of house. If we are down in Devon this is the first place we book for a meal.

NUMBER EIGHT: We have had the privileged of eating in some amazing restaurants around Europe but we can honestly say that our meal and service at Number Eight was one of the best we’ve ever had. The quality, imagination and presentation of the food was faultless. If this doesn’t deserve a Michelin star nothing does!

Not somewhere we would usually choose to visit but thought we would try something new and it didn’t disappoint, the food was very good.

Very disappointed with our experience as a pescatarian/vegetarian the options were thoughtless and tasteless. Instead of lamb there was breaded aubergine no flavour what so ever. Instead of chicken was chargrilled courgette. For £85 was really underwhelmed. Don't bother if you don't eat meat chef obviously can't be bothered! Service was lacking for the price you pay had to top up own water and wine.

Fabulous Memories made for life, what an outstanding restaurant run by a dedicated couple. I cannot fault the ambiance, attention to detail, the service was outstanding. This husband and wife team have made a bold move over the river to a larger venue. The new spot is chic and modern and the tables generously spaced. The two of them run everything seamlessly and produce top quality food seemingly effortlessly. We had the wine flight which was both well matched and generously poured. My only criticism was that service was a bit brisk & we had to ask for a break before the brisket dish which was accommodated with no fuss whatsoever. An extra pair of hands front of house to serve arrival drinks and seat guests, clear plates could possibly help but I see these two enjoy what they do and they do it incredibly well. Wow, what a great restaurant. My wife and I have been privileged to have eaten in some of the best restaurants in London, and indeed, around the world. We had a first class experience at this restaurant, a couple run establishment with a strong history. Chloe, front of house, and Josh, her husband chef made our visit to north Devon most memorable. The six course tasting menu could have easily stood alongside any Michelin starred restaurant, the wine pairing supported the food with ease and Chloe’s service skills made us so comfortable as if we had known her for years. If you enjoy first class food, first class service, and an experience you want to keep talking about, perhaps you should visit No:8 I’m sure you will love it..

Finally managed to sample the delights of this fantastic dining experience. Some false starts and rebooking around Covid and they are booked up months in advance. My wife had the pescatarian option while I had the standard 7 course taster menu. Difficult to pick a favourite as the standard was very high and each course was a culinary delight. Inventive combinations of ingredients and flavours beautifully presented. All the tables around us rebooked to come again which explains the need to book well in advance. We will be back!

Been patiently waiting to return to Number 8 for months. We weren’t disappointed. We booked in advance for a double anniversary celebration with friends and we’re so glad we did. Every course was fantastic with such wonderful flavours, textures and the wine all paired beautifully. We couldn’t resist the cheese platters and shared 2 between the four of us and would also highly recommend this extra course. Service was friendly and helpful and was happily changed to a pace to suit us toward the end of our meal when we were starting to get a bit fuller!One bit of constructive criticism, we would have liked a little more explanation about the wonderful food we were being served. With only one person at front of house serving we understand how busy it was, the menu only had minimal information and so a little more info would have been welcome, maybe an additional menu with more detail? However this was a minor thing and it was overall a fantastic dining experience, highly recommended and we would love to experience again in the future.

Yet another superb meal at Number Eight this evening. So many taste sensations, creatively presented. The salmon, black treacle and cucumber was my star dish. After a cancellation came up we went on Sunday 25th. Four of us braced for a lovely 7 course tasting menu, and tasty it was!!. From start to finish with lots of time to rest between which was great, We thoroughly enjoyed all the courses, especially the variety we had, and the attention to detail of all of it was superb. Not only that the cutlery, crockery, down to the wine glasses have been thought through thoroughly and at sometime we will return. Only 14 covers, which makes it an intimate evening.

Where do we start. Very quiet and lovely restaurant in the middle to town. We were welcomed by a lovely Chloe who knew who we were and welcomed us to our table. We were given a drinks menu and asked for a “pre drink”. The restaurant has only 4 tables so your party feels very private and secluded. The 7 course menu is phenomenal and I feel you can only experience this if you have been there. We had a quiet chat with the owner Chloe and it’s only her and her partner the chef who work there. (They even do the washing up). Every food came out and was warm and full of flavour. Each course was amazing in different flavours you would never match together at home. The menu is a variety of fish and meat. We had a vegetarian in our party who they accommodated to fantastically. I honestly can’t put into words the experience this was. The value for money is brilliant and the chef is on par if not better than any top celebrity chef out there. I would 100% recommend number eight if you are local or a visitor. Get you booking in early as this place is very exclusive and only takes 4 tables at a time. They are currently booked until October (in early July). Overall incredible experience. Get your bookings in. Thanks for an amazing experience.

I had heard so many good things about Number Eight and seen some beautiful pictures of their food, so I was really looking forward to my first visit! WOW! They certainly met every expectation and more. Outstanding food and service. Stunning table ware, spotlessly clean. I really cannot recommend this young couples restaurant enough. We have just come back from a wonderful evening at this small restaurant.The food was a taster menu and it was amazing and the cost was very reasonable for the quality of food we had.Wish we lived closer so we could visit more often.

The pandemic had caused us to postpone twice so third time lucky. Josh and Chloe have not been resting during lockdown with various detail changes to further improve a lovely dining experience. The taster menu was amazing with each dish being cooked to perfection with excellent scallops, wonderful lamb and the fascinating combination of flavours which Josh does so well. Chloe as front of house chats without being intrusive and the meal was beautifully paced.

After having two takeaway meals, which were excellent, we were looking forward to having a meal at No.8, due to lockdowns we waited a fair time to get a table and the meal was well worth waiting for, every course on the six course menu was superb and couldn’t be faulted, the quality of the food was backed up by equally good service. We will certainly be returning as soon as we can.

Outstanding. That's the beat way to describe Chloe and Josh's fantastic restaurant Number Eight. We had been numerous times as well as having the delivery menu in the first lockdown and the food is just flawless. Tonight we had the tasting menu and wow the food was out of this world. The balance of flavour combined with the local produce creates an enhanced experience with food that is just amazing. We can not recommend the restaurant and the impeccable service given tonight and we will, 100% be returning back!

How and why this chef does not enter MasterChef, I do not know! Marcus and Monica would be so impressed. We are regulars here and just love it. Every mouthful is an explosion of flavour. The ideas are so unique. The service is also five star! It is a real treat out in these dark days and also by the way very covid safe and spotlessly clean.

This was our first meal out since restrictions were lifted, but we needn’t have worried in the slightest about whether the experience would be any worse compared to previous visits. The food was absolutely delicious, Covid changes were subtle but effective, the service upbeat and lovely and all in all it was a great evening.

If you appreciate fantastic quality food as well as service then look no further than Number Eight, it has it all. It's sad to hear silly comments made by people that obviously don't understand great food, but everyone is entitiled to their own opinion.Yes its pricy for the area but then its not somewhere you would eat on a weekly basis, for special occasions its perfect and would recommend it without hesitation.

We have now eaten at Number Eight on several occasions and each time the food has been superb. The service is excellent, Chloe is professional, friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. Josh’s food is just perfect - where are the Michelin team, and why haven’t they eaten here? Josh and Chloe surely deserve a star - mind you, it’s already difficult enough to get a table here! What a find! It’s always a gamble when you’re not a local to find somewhere special to eat and on this occasion we made the right choice. The service was excellent, the food first class - it puts many a celebrity restaurant to shame. The 6 course tasting menu was flavorsome, hot and very well presented. Contact the restaurant in advance if you have specific allergies or would prefer a vegetarian menu,Every dish succulent and full of flavour, pork belly, hake, local lamb, strawberries bursting with flavour and the lightest chocolate mousse. Finally a selection of cheese from the South West. Every precaution is taken to make you feel safe as a diner, just a wonderful experience. Well what a place. My girlfriend has wanted to eat here for a while and we managed to get a table for her birthday. From the moment we walked in we loved it. Chloe made us feel very welcome and safe and talked us through the tasting menu. The food is absolutely amazing and is some of the best dishes we have ever eaten. After missing out in May for my birthday, we rebooked for SWMBOS' birthday, we were not disappointed. The six course taster menu was superb, fresh home baked bread as a starter, followed by scallop, curry, cucumber, raisin and peanut, wonderful. Pigs cheek, apple, celeriac and black pudding, divine. Hake, mushroom, grape, cauliflower and chicken, excellent. Lamb rump, lamb shoulder, salsa verde and onion, the best I have ever tasted. Strawberries, champagne and basil, heavenly. Last but not least chocolate, cherry, pistachio and yoghurt, I have run out of words to describe the fantastic food we were served. The service once again was first class, professional and very covid safe. We will return.

Been over 6 months since we’ve been able to eat here so we were very much looking forward to returning. Josh and Chloe have had to adapt things so they have switched to a tasting menu as they can’t have the number of customers in. Wow every single course was outstanding. Impossible to say which one was the best as they all were. If you’ve not eaten here before you’re missing out, book in now - if you can get a table that is and they are deservedly extremely busy.

We had one of the best meals of our visit to Devon. Due to Covid, this restaurant is taking 50% deposit for a tasting menu. Fair play to Chloe and Josh, who run this restraint on their own.The 6 course tasting menu is prepared and presented to the highest standard. The food was so good, we can’t stop talking about it days after.Thank you very much for an excellent evening.

Another fabulous meal from Number Eight. This was our first taster meal and it couldn't have been better. Always beautifully presented and thoughtful tasty twists all the way through. Chloe did an excellent job of hosting us and despite a smaller number of covers due to COVID she helps bring a friendly and welcoming atmosphere to the place. Clearly some TLC spent on the place during lockdown as it was decorated as immaculately as the food is presented. I understand that they are pretty booked up through August and September and deserve to be. Just hope they are able to accommodate us when we are next down in the area!

A pleasant friendly welcome from Chloe started off an evening of fine dining.We had the tasting menu which was 6 plates of deliciousness, and we all tried and enjoyed food that we might not have chosen ourselves. Catered for an allergy to shellfish. Beautifully decorated restaurant, great background music, and impeccable service. What a treat for Bideford to have such a special place.

Missing Number Eight, we tried Number Eight at home. A lovely idea, the food selection is good and delivered mid afternoon. The menu is well thought through, cooking was straightforward (one oven temperature and microwave)Importantly instructions were easy to follow, so really easy to prepare with little effort. We had wonderful focaccia, king prawns, a delicious ox cheek cottage pie with carrot puree and vegetables, followed by an incredible chocolate mousse. The bottle of tempranillo was a perfect accompaniment. Whatever Josh and Chloe do, they do it really well

My favourite place to go for special occasions, flawless every time. Always recommend to anyone who hasn't been yet!

Had a fantastic meal at this restaurant last night. The food was amazing and Chloe could not have done more to make our experience perfect We will definitely return and I 100% recommend this restaurant....you will not be disappointed

Second visit to number 8Food fantastic, cooked extremely wellAnd service impeccable.just moved to Devon 6 months ago.what a great find in the food magazine. The presentation of the food would give London restaurants a run for their money. I should know l just retired from being a chef in London myself. We shall definitely be going again.only 1 chef and 1 front of house. They work hard but know what they are doing.

Had a wonderful meal here last evening. Was given free taster of soup/bread, and of dessert. The courses weren't large but very filling. Would definitely recommend.

Following previous reviews we booked this restaurant about 6 weeks before we were due to visit the area on holiday from Leicester. From the first time we spoke with Chloe she was very accommodating and welcoming. The restaurant is very small with only about 8 tables. Despite this it is very intimate and well decorated. The five courses we had were all very well presented and extremely tasteful. I believe the food was on par of Michelin Star quality. Chloe and Josh have developed a fabulous 5 star restaurant. Don't change anything and please don't go anywhere until we return next year. Thanks both for a wonderful evening and great food. S & C...

My wife booked a table at Number Eight for my birthday as we were spending the weekend in Westward Ho!. I’m so glad she did! We each had 3 courses and each one was amazing! The small in between courses were beautiful too. Every dish was made with thought, love and precision and you could tell the chef loved their job. Service was attentive and professional and the courses came at just the right pace. With it being a small restaurant and only having a small number of tables, it’s worth booking in advance.
