Decided to stop for some fresh coffee, tea and cakes as we were in the area and since we were in the area and had heard so much about the place, we thought why not. I must say it was a delight and were not disappointed. The cakes were nice and fluffy and the coffee were absolutely spot on. We will return when in the area.

I went to stock up on tea and as the Pekoe cafe there was open, I decided to try the coffee and a slice of Apricot Bakewell which was outstanding, the best I've had.The service for the Northern Tea Merchants is excellent. The lady in charge is very knowledgeable about all the teas and coffee they stock and will advise you on any of them. The cafe is set up around the shop, with plenty of space in between each table, all perfectly Covid safe, spotlessly clean with very friendly staff. Go and treat yourself in safe surroundings!

Pekoe Café at Northern Tea Merchants, on Chatsworth Road, opened after lockdown last Monday, so we were delighted to visit again. Our first visit was on Thursday, August 13th, for delicious bacon sandwiches and a cafetière of their wonderful coffee with cream. We decided to call in again, two days later, for lunch. This time it was smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. The eggs were light and fluffy, and there was maybe three times the amount of salmon I’ve had anywhere else, lovely chunky full slices, not tiny slivers. The meal was so tasty, particularly because the salmon wasn’t too salty. As we had plenty of time, we decided cake was needed, with a pot of tea, and chose coffee and walnut cake, again with cream. Being towards the end of the day, there was ‘a cream crisis’, with only clotted cream and squirty cream left, so we chose clotted cream, which paired very well with the scrumptious cake.We always enjoy our visits, not just for the food and drink, but also for the unusual items on sale, from pretty china to attractive storage tins. However, in these days of social distancing, we were also pleased to see how well-spaced the tables were and how the staff were aware of the new hygiene requirement. All in all, we cannot recommend Pekoe Café highly enough. ‘Practically perfect in every way’.

Called 7th August 2020 about 3.30.pm First time I just popped my head in to see what time it closed. The lady was really quite rude and condescending to me. The shop closed at 5.00pm but the cafe wasnt open as stated on the window. (It was the tone of voice) When I said just asking as my granddaughter was coming to shop, she was just finishing at the hairdressers and I was waiting outside for her. The woman said as long as shes got her mask on.(same tone of voice) Oh ..okay. I wasn't asking about the cafe and shes quite diligent on wearing her mask. She wanted to do a bit of coffee/tea shopping as she was moving out of home and needed some nice drinks. I waited in the car outside for her while she went in and did her bit of shopping...with her mask on.... When she came out she noted how rude and off the woman was with her. I said she was the same with me when I asked about the time it closed. My granddaughter is a very kind caring person and would never say anything bad of anyone unless it troubled her. So the moral is, the produce you sell is excellent but some of your staff could do with a few more manners. And no she wasnt busy. The shop was empty.

I would disregard the comments made by walkers247,it is the only "terrible" review for several years.I was standing behind him in the queue to be served and have a very different perception of what happened. Perhaps other issues were troubling him ,but he reappeared rather stressed. The staff were,in my view ,pleasant and courteous despite being extremely busy. They took time to explain why they couldn't immediately supply what he wanted and offered to make up a hamper of his choice if he was prepared to wait.I certainly wouldn't agree with his assessment that the shop was chaotic. There appeared to be a clear and efficient system in place to ensure customers were served expeditiously.A visit to Northern Tea Merchants is never going to be quick! Selecting your coffee and waiting for it to be ground is all part of the attraction.Well worth a visit if you enjoy high quality coffee or tea

Businesses that are so disorganised and treat their customers with such clear contempt, don’t deserve your money. Foolishly ignoring the bad reviews I'd seen online; I went there to buy a £26 gift basket they were advertising on their website.Surprised at just how chaotic and disorganised the shop was, and realising I would have to ask someone for help, as I couldn’t find anything I had seen and what was there didn’t have prices on, I waited patiently to speak to a sales person for about ten to fifteen minutes. The person I spoke to took only seconds to lose me as a customer for the rest of my life. Pointing to my phone, which was displaying their website and the gift basket I had chosen, apparently I really annoyed her by asking "Can you show me where these are please as I would like to buy one and take it as a gift for my daughter?"Immediately her face transformed into one of contempt and anger as she began to ridicule me by pointing out how absurd I had been just expecting to turn up and buy one of their gift baskets.Perhaps if she had been at all apologetic, that might have helped. Or offered any alternatives. But the main emotions that I felt she was giving off was pure hostility and derision. I believe she was saying something like I should have known that I needed to order in advance or something. But she didn't even make herself clear on that, or how a poor unsuspecting customer might know that. The main message she seemed keen on getting across was how she was not interested in helping or listening to anything I had to say. Long story short, having been swiftly "put in my place" I was sent away “with a final remark from the sales person that if I want to write them a bad review online she doesn't care. So that’s what I am now doing. Writing an accurate , but bad review of the nightmare experience I had just trying to give this company money. One final point, whilst trying to find anything at all positive I can say about that place. At one point she did begrudgingly offer to make a gift basked up for me while I waited. But she added that if I did so, I might as well buy something from their café and sit at a table because I would have a VERY long wait. Perhaps it was the scorn on her face while she said it – I don’t know. But somehow, I didn’t think giving her any money and waiting would have been a good idea at that point.

We popped in for a light Saturday lunch. Booking is recommended. We were greeted by friendly staff who took our order. We plumped for hot paninis - both had a generous amount of filling...one with brie and cranberry, the other with ham and mustard. Both came with a nice little side salad/garnish and crisps. There's a good selection of drinks - we had a pot of tea (which came with a pot of hot water) and two cappuccinos. We also indulged in cake! The staff were really helpful as I have a nut allergy and they had no hesitation checking one of the cake's ingredients for me. There's a good choice on offer and we had a slice of chocolate Baileys cake and a slice of lemon sponge. Portions were generous and the cakes were delicious - really moist and fresh. Our bill came to just over £26 for two paninis, three drinks and two slices of cake. Food was good quality and nicely presented. All in all it was lovely. Having visited another 'tea shop' ( my description would be 'cafe'), not a mile away the week before, and being very disappointed, Northern Tea Merchants were the absolute polar opposite....food and teas, first class, service excellent, atmosphere ( and the wonderful smell of ground coffee), top notch. I can't recommend enough. Prices were reasonable too, given the top quality of food and drinks. Tea was REAL loose leaf variety, not teabags, which is always a big plus. Also bought some loose leaf tea, which is far superior to a well known brand . A real diamond of a place, amongst many rhinestones on Chatsworth Rd! Needless to say, this will be a regular haunt. Called in for a cup of tea on our way from Knutsford to Norfolk, turned out to be a fund raising continental breakfast, so we joined in. Absolutely wonderful lovely coffee and tea, breakfast was excellent and the ladies made us very welcome, all for a deserving cause. Hope you made lots of money. Will call again.

If you are in Chesterfield and you are a coffee aficionado then this is the place to visit. Been coming here for years and it doesn't fail. Pick your coffee beans, watch them ground and then drink. Superb. The food is excellent as well.

Great cafe, the sandwiches and cakes are fresh, reasonably priced and delicious and there is a huge choice of both tea and coffee. They also serve a very good afternoon tea, all in friendly surroundings with attentive staff. Would recommend it.

As soon as you enter the cafe, the aromas of coffee beans entice you to find your table and study the menu. Service is excellent by the very friendly staff. Drinks are served in proper china, tea is made with leaves, coffee in cafetieres ... all done properly .... and from Northern Tea Merchants wide range of types of tea and coffee. Oh, and the food's good too !

Had been past the place a couple of times before we actually called in for some lunch, enroute to relatives. Firstly asked if we needed to book as most of the tables had reserved signs on them but they said we could have a table that had been reserved for 1 o'clock , it was around 12:00. The choice of teas and coffees was amazing and the service was excellent as was the food and drinks.

Visited with my sister, mainly because i needed some fresh ground coffee (they are able to advise the best coffee to suit your tastes) ground according to the way you make your coffee. Decided to treat ourselves to cake and a drink while we were there. The frangipan almond and apricot tart is to die for, moist full of flavour and even contains bits of apricots, we will definitely be back for more and I live in Newcastle under Lyme lol. Tea and coffee selection is brilliant and you can even purchase the necessary bits and bobs. ☕

I popped in this bonny place for a quick bite to eat with a friend..it turned into a lovely lazy lunchtime treat. The staff were so attentive and knowledgeable and nothing was too much trouble. The food and cake selection were so good but what makes this gem different is the attention to detail. From the crisp white tablecloths to the immaculate tableware, it was all spot on. The food was prepared and served in such a way that I could see that these guys really care, which doesn't half make a change in this era of fast food and lunch on the go. I'll definitely be revisiting and taking my daughter for afternoon tea, soon.

We had researched where to have lunch during a shopping trip and this cafe seemed perfect. On arrival one waitress was deep in conversation with another customer and ignored our party of three adults and a baby standing and waiting for assistance. In the end we caught the eye of another assistant (it was not busy) and we were advised that they do not have a high chair and she actually said "we really should". We departed and went a short walk along the road for lunch at Nonnas where a high chair was readily available and food and service excellent.

I always love going to Northern Tea Merchants. It's a regular stop for me and my friends. At The Pekoe Cafe in Northern Tea Merchants, there's a huge (and I mean huge) choice of teas and coffees from around the world, along with absolutely delicious food - soups, sandwiches, cakes, teacakes, scones - all super tasty. For anybody who needs it, there's gluten-free bread and soya milk too (always a plus point in my book!) All the staff are incredibly friendly and have time for every customer. I can highly recommend The Pekoe Cafe - you won't be disappointed!

Tracey and the ladies couldn't have been more attentive and the variety of sandwiches and cakes was fantastic with the most amazing cream scones!! Suffice to say we won't need to eat for a week!! Thank you

Excellent value tea room with an amazing selection of coffees ( beans ground to order) and world wide teas for sale and to drink on the premises. Spiffing cakes plus snack menu which is always well presented by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Lots of mugs, cafetieres and associated quality sundries for sale that make super presents that are useful and unusual. The best value tea room I've come across in all of my travels in the UK! Brilliant.

This tea/coffee shop is consistently good. I have been quite a few times as I have always enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and the professional service. If you want fresh food and a delicious piece of cake, you can't go wrong. On occasions, I haven't had much time and the staff have been very helpful in their approach to enabling me to take food away. Coffee to take home is fantastic too! Personally, I don't think it's expensive-you get what you pay for!

Great coffee from freshly ground beans and wonderfully large slices of cake. A tradition maintained and improved. Thank you.

I've had a soft spot for the Northern Tea Merchant ever since they were very helpful to an art student relative many years ago. However, it's been years since I visited as it is on a busy road a little out of Chesterfield town centre rather than somewhere more picturesque.

Come on, Chesterfield. What’s wrong with you? Excellent beer, with the brewery round the back; pints under £3; great live music; and there’s only a dozen or so in on a Sunday evening.

Had a tasty mocha in pleasant surroundings, people watching from the raised area. Not a fantastically large selection, but all quality beverages and snacks. My mocha was nicely presented and tasted great. What more could you ask for.

First visit here but definitely would not return. The breakfast was over cooked, luke warm and poor quality sausages with the over easy egg cremated and uneditable. No thank you or goodbye as we were leaving. I did give my feedback to staff who said he’d pass it on to the kitchen.
