North Berwick Fry in East Lothian

My partner and I frequently come here for our dinner or Lunch. We live in Haddington and have 3 chippies near us but this place does the best chips and fried pizzas by far! The extra journey here has always been worth it and the staff are always so friendly and welcoming! Thank you again for a lovely meal tonight! (The couple from Haddington)

Omg went in for two trays of chips and at £6.80 for both inedible crap was totally out of order. The chips were so crispy and was obviously left from the kids lunchtime batch. Not fresh at all won’t be back and it’s sad as we have been several times

Cracking fish and chip shop, always cooked fresh and the fish is superb. Also does a really, really good pizza! Highly recommended.

Ordered two fish and chips last night, good portion, fish was fresh and extremely tasty and the chips were great too. Nice smiley service and the man that served us (the owner?) was generous with chippy sauce and salt. Great place!

We had a lovely lunch yesterday! One fish and chips, one chicken leg and chips to share with a wee one. Followed by ice cream. All freshly made and well presented. Always happy to sit in and have a meal here. Highly recommend.

Popped into this ‘award winning’ chip shop for a couple of fish suppers after the tea time rush and were so disappointed. No one else in shop so lots of time waiting and looking at propaganda of it being an award winning chip shop. What a disappointment as both our fish were thin and very dried up with chips basically scraps from the bottom the friar I would guess. Acceptable if it’s just few quid, but at over £11 per supper it’s one of the dearest fish suppers we’ve ever had & is little more than just a rip off.

Had haddock, chips and peas to eat in. Delicious and tasty and came piping hot. Large portions, couldn't quite manage it all there was so much but hmmm, so very nice. Lovely staff and also dog friendly. Very reasonably priced. Would definitely come again.

Fish was just about average, very small portions for £11.20. Didn't seem very fresh and had a odour of older fish. Proper fresh fish doesn't smell. Chips were okay but once again not many large chips mostly the scrunchy ends. Rather disappointed just glad we shared a portion.

After being very disappointed the first night with a fish supper from another establishment I went to the square where I met the owner of a proper Scottish chippy run by locals who knew their stuff Last time I’d had chips from the north Berwick fry was over 50 years ago And still as good as I remember! Cooked in dripping ! 10/10 the staff were top class! Will definitely return when we come back next Forget the rest ,go to the best!

Ordered a deep fried pizza got to caravan and pizza was over cooked hard edges not edible centre of pizza was ok first time using the takeaway not use again

They were the worst Fish and Chips we have ever had. I would have taken them back, but my wife didn't want me to make a fuss. We put them in the bin outside the toilet block over the road. I now feel guilty that I didn't put some rennies in the bin as well!! I honestly believe the Fish n Chips we were given were the previous nights warmed up. I recommend going down to the Harbour.

Absolutely fantastic travelled 440 miles up to stay in scotland on holiday and travelled another 80 miles to north berwick and too fine haggis there fast and fanstastic food From the family in bristol

Recently visited when going for a family walk around North Berwick. The chip shop is clean and tidy. Probably fairly priced considering they are the only chip shop in the area open during the day. However the fish supper we order was the worst I’ve had. Fish was so bland, seemed cheap and not fresh, I could be wrong about the fresh part but it really tasted like frozen fish. Not going tif auto the service as the shop was extremely busy and staff doing the best they can. Wouldn’t go back again. The chippy was always good back in the day. It’s at great spot and definitely has the potential to be great again!

Very poor meal indeed. Overcooked batter with flecks of dried and overcooked fish inside. Asked for another meal that was just as poor. Come to Yorkshire we will show you a decent and absolutely delicious fish and chip supper!

This is absolutely the best fish and chips ever. Light batter, moist fish and superb chips with punchy curry sauce in the side. Ignore the low marks, this is top quality food

I would absolutely avoid this place!! We drove from Edinburgh for our dinner. Once seated, we noticed lots of flys gathered in 3 places. Some on the roof & walls, Definitely looks like a fly infestation. Nothing had been in place to resolve this problem. We couldn’t enjoy our food they were coming back and foward to our table. I’ve been in Many restaurants and never once felt so uncomfortable. Very unhealthy & unhygienic. We did ask to speak to the manager but refused to come out. The fish we ordered was definitely not fresh, it wouldn’t Be eaten. The taste was horrendous. Please avoid if you don’t want to get sick. It doesn’t even deserve 1 star.

Walked in for two fish suppers, the shop was very busy so i was hopeful, how wrong i was! The fryer piled up small fish with his bare hands, once we started eating we found the fish poor, dry and overcooked and the chips were little better, what a disappointment 🤷‍♂️ my recommendation - go elsewhere👍

Quite easily one of the worst fish suppers I’ve had in a long time. The fish was so thin it may have been a fish finger. The small bit of fish there was had plenty of small bones in it too. Very disappointing for £11.20. The owner has since responded saying that we should have popped back in and spoken face to face. Easy if you’re still in the area but more disappointingly, the owner should be well aware of what portion size they are selling and to what amount of bones is within the fish as the small piece we had was very bony.

Fantastic chippy, the best spicy haggis I have ever had the chips were cooked to perfection, the next time I am in the area I will definitely be eating here, highly recommend.

Italian staff, kind and very good food, fast and friendly service. the best thing is that they are open until 8-9pm, which is not a given in these parts.

Service was pleasant enough. No clear indication if it’s self service or table service. Splattering of tomato sauce up the wall at our booth, didn’t look fresh. Food was expensive and poor quality. £14 for a single fish and chips. The fish was bad and the chips are the worst I’ve ever had. Cheeseburger was hilarious it was that bad. If the prices reflected the food we were served, I wouldn’t have scored so low

Went here yesterday and bought: 2 bottles of cola, 1 bottle of water, one chips and cheese, SINGLE chicken nuggets and a SINGLE sausage and it came to £21.50!!! Ridiculous! Our mistake as we didn't look at the price board yet sandelous prices for the poor quality of food. Hardly any chips or cheese with the chips n cheese the single sausage tasted ok yet must of been about £6 for a tiny bit and no chips! The man serving looked very grumpy which is why I marked atmosphere a 2 as first impressions count. I wish I read reviews on this resturant before we went in to pre warn us. Also I noticed when you write a honest review on here, the owner tends to reply in a very sarcastic manner rather than accepting someone's feedback. Stay clear and get your chips somewhere else 🍟

We enjoyed delicious haddock in batter. The owners were friendly and welcoming. The only negative was the state of the toilets. Very malodorous and not conducive to a pleasant dining experience.

The crispiest battered fish in the Lothians! No leathery soggy batter here. We travel a 50 mile round trip to sit in for their fish & chips! Never disappointed.

The food was good but me and my gf was served by a oldish man that kept getting quite mad at us When we were only trying to order our food And not to mention he was being creepy to other females that came in (cat calling)

Went to North Berwick with friends for a day at the beach and decided to get a chippy after a swim. Went to the takeaway part of the shop. The man behind the counter immediately asked us 'where are you from' and then nothing else after I said hello which was a bit rude and then after my friend spoke he immediately asked him where he was from as well. Made the atmosphere feel a bit more like airport security rather than a chippy. Got a fish supper with onion rings and the batter was not crisp the chips were a bit stodgy and the man scooped the onion rings in with his bare hands!! All for £15.90, avoid.

Was there at the weekend. Fish was ok. Crispy batter for a change, but the chips were dry and tasteless. It looked like they were bought in chips. This chippy has captive audience so it needs to improve. The Turkish chippy up the street is much better. Resting on their lawrels from the 80s I think

We came 2 weeks ago and because of the poor weather used the dine in side due to the poor weather instead of the takeaway we use when visiting normally. The food was excellent and there is a good selection on offer at good prices . The owners are always very welcoming and friendly and we will be back again in October when we are back in the area

Very nice place to eat, with fresh fish and chips. Slightly longer time to wait but they are busy most of the time ;)no space to park a car in front or close to it until an emergency stop or at a close car park behind the roundabout. Not the cheapest but is worth it :)

Fish and chips..takeaway. Freshly prepared in golden thin tempura. Hot and extremely good. We ate sitting on a bench by the sea. I recommend ! A very nice, smiling salesman (probably the owner of the place). We will definitely come back whenever we come there.

This is my second time to eat here. There are no seats in the store, so I can only takeaway, but the boss is very enthusiastic, talkative, and friendly. The fried fish was very crispy and delicious, and the fries were generous. The boss also gave me a lot of ketchup for free.

Your food is served hot and just the right portion size . The service is impeccable ,lovely staff very friendly and attentive. Been coming to North Berwick for 15+ years and this place is always a highlight. Friendly service and great food. Recently tried their pizzas and they are great. If having chips ask for ‘sauce’ - the secret to great chips. You will only find it in this general area of Scotland.

Had fish, chips and white pudding tonight after a long day's drive. Well battered fish, great chips and the very best white pudding all cooked freshly and perfectly.

We popped in for lunch on a very wet Thursday. Service was prompt and friendly and the owner appeared to ask if we were enjoying our food. We had fish suppers, one with mushy peas. The fish was delicious and clearly freshly cooked. The chips were also lovely and crisp. Fuelled us well for the walk back to Yellowcraigs in the rain! The couple from Lasswade.

We were looking forward to fish and chips in this great area... The portion was definitely very large, the taste was not recommended in any way. The chips are still partly raw and without salt, the fish is rich with greasy breading and not seasoned either. Our Fish & Chips experience, it doesn't!!!

Totally overpriced for the worst quality. Chips soggy and partly raw, fish with a taste of old fat. Add to that the bad mood of the staff. As vacationers from Germany, we are definitely used to better snack bars.

I’ve been to quite a few chips shops in the area and restaurants to be fair , but I have to stay this is the best for takeaway and sit in. We do both :) The fish is lightly battered with a good well cooked crispy batter and the fish is still moist as nothing worse than thick batter that’s not cooked through and stodgy or cooked and dry. We have never been disappointed and been around 5 times since moving here a few months ago from Birmingham. I was worried I would never find a decent chippy until I found this gem. I don’t tend to bad review but only the good ones and this is a gem and worth it. The staff are funny and friendly too

Visited with Nephew & a friend from Germany, I had a Baked Potato with Cheese & Onion which quite honestly was diabolical the potato was cold certainly cold enough for the cheese not to melt & felt chilled on the inside so was unable to eat, my Neohews Chips with Cheese was not much better he however forced it upon himself as he is on medication that could only be taken with food so had to force some down, my Friend ordered Fish & Chips & as soon as it arrived I knew it was going to be a problem the fish looked greasy & over cooked which was exactly as it was, I was embarrassed that she had that to eat, she only ate a little & as soon as she put her cutlery down we were off, it was the first time in years since I was at this chippie as I live in the Scottish Borders it's certainly a good bit away, I'm so disappointed that this happened, I certainly won't go back to this Chippie/Cafe even if I could do the journey without relying on a lift to get there

Absolutely foul, the inside resembles a prison and has no music, only 'ambience' was freeview itv. Place is beige, soulless and sad. Food is overpriced and tasteless. Servers seemed depressed to be working there and communicated in one word sentences. One did not wash her hands after using the loo. Awful dining experience, wouldn't recommend to anyone

Everything cooked in Beef Dripping, although they don’t tell you this outside or on the menu. No baked potatoes available, despite being on the menu. Don’t expect to be able to eat here if you are a vegetarian.
