I lived in the UAE for more than a decade. With the large number of people from the Indian Subcontinent living there, we were spoilt with the quality of Indian style foods. Since moving to the UK, my family has struggled to find Indian food of similar quality, with most dishes having been adapted for local tastes. Today, I found that genuine Sub-continent flavour again. It's going to be a long drive for me to revisit this restaurant again, but I'm willing to make the effort. Faith in Indian food restored. Thank you.

I absolutely LOVE this restaurant. They have been closed for a few months and have recently reopened. Myself and my partner were very eager to return and did so on the night they reopened. Andrew was as warm and welcoming as ever, and he had a new team with him who were equally welcoming. There is a new chef and a few new items on the menu along with the old favourites. We tried 3 new items, and they were absolutely delicious. The wait was definitely worth it. This place really is a hidden gem and the most authentic Indian cuisine you can find. An absolute must!!

The food is fantastic. Very authentic and the vegetarian options are far more interesting than the usual options at other restaurants. You can taste the layers of flavours and the fresh herbs which makes me think that the food is cooked by a chef that actually cares about their cooking. We’ve never been disappointed with our food. There are some new dishes on the menu too. The staff are friendly and professional. It’s just such a shame that whenever we go there are so few people in the restaurant. It deserves to be full of diners having a good time then the atmosphere of the restaurant would be improved.

We went last night, the food is good but it is so annoying that they add a 10% service charge on. Our bill was 31.46(2.86 service charge added on) my husband gave the waiter £30 cash. A few minutes later the waiter came back with the cheek of asking do we want to put £1.46 on our debit card!! No we don’t because that is part of the service charge and the service isn’t that great anyway!! Do they not realise people would probably leave bigger tips if they didn’t add a service charge! Then we went in the bar for a gin and they don’t even have proper gin glasses!!

We visited early on a Monday evening, 18:30, which of course was a quiet time and therefore did not help with the ambience. It was a bit chilly and although clean and tidy it is all a bit tired. This is such a shame, as the food is very authentic indian in its cooking and presentation and tasted lovely. There were four of us, we all enjoyed our meals and thought it was good value for money. We will visit again but maybe a bit later in the week

My family visit Nirvana restaurant regularly, and it really is a hidden gem. It’s tucked away behind the Roebuck Inn and is a bit like stepping back in time. The service is always friendly and the food is excellent. The main bonus for me is that there is also an English hotel/bar food menu, so if members of your party are not keen on Indian dishes, they can order something to suit them.

Not the greatest surroundings or ambience in the restaurant but very good for a takeaway. Don’t expect the same dishes as your local curry house, I understand that this is more authentic Indian fare. I have nothing but praise for this restaurant. It was my first time here and we decided to take a punt on it after reading reviews on TripAdvisor, and I'm so glad we did. The lighting was subdued as was the muzak. Both of which may not be important for most but as someone with autism who has maddeningly overactive senses, I really appreciated it. I've lost count of the number of restaurants I've walked into and straight out again because they failed my basic requirements. We dropped in without booking at 18:40 on a Thursday and were the only people there which worried me at first, but after about half an hour, others started arriving. I had a Deccan Lamb to start and a Murgh Jalfrezi with Mushroom Rice and Keema Nan. We finished with a couple of Gulab Jamun each. All the food we ordered tasted wonderful, absolutely spot on. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The young waitress who served us had a very pleasant manner and was very professional. I went here with a friend to belatedly celebrate my birthday, but I will be returning again very soon with the only reason being to enjoy the excellent food and service once again.

We were here this time to celebrate a birthday. We have been many times before and find the food first class as it is all cooked to order. A meal is to be enjoyed so we always take our time and never feel rushed. We have sometimes asked for a slight variation to the dish and it is never any trouble, this time my Mother-in-Law asked for the lamb to be more like a Madras and was delighted when the food arrived and commented how tender the lamb was. Anyone who appreciates freshly prepared food does not mind waiting. The Decan Lamb was good as was the Murgh Chetinad and we always enjoy the Peshwari Naan. We like the welcome we get every time we go.

Pint of cobra from draft along with a wide selection of other beers. Highly recommend, nicely fernished only gripe would be the music, but in my eyes really not a big problem. Food absolutely delicious, so full of flavour and some quite different dishes from the regular Indian cuisine. Our starters were quite delayed but we were advised it was because it’s cooked from fresh, it was worth the wait! The only thing that would put me off going again is that the menu has no side dishes apart from rice and bread. We ordered a Bombay potato and a Saag paneer but were told these only come as main courses - at the price of a main course! We asked for half portions but this wasn’t possible. We’ve never known an Indian/Asian restaurant to not serve vegetable sides to share, very unusual, and it did taint the evening slightly.

It was a Monday night so very, very quiet but as we had a toddler with us that suited us though some background music would have been nice. The waitress was fantastic and very helpful and friendly. I had trouble actually finding the restaurant at first - the only sign with the name 'Nirvana' on it is on the Nursing Home next door rather than the Roebuck Inn, but it is in the Roebuck Inn. Just go in the door marked Reception and turn right.I was meeting up with my daughter in the area for a meal so I had a look for nearby restaurants and I was struck by a previous review of this one which started, 'Best Indian meal me and my husband ever had!' It seemed an unlikely claim but I had to find out for myself, and by the end of the evening I couldn't think when I'd had a better Indian meal either. The sauces served with the poppadums weren't the four usual ones, but three really fresh distinctive sauces that went together really well. The naan bread was light and full of flavour - so much better than the doughy heavy bread that you sometimes get.. And the main courses were just so fresh and full of flavour. We had the spicy Murgh Chettinad and the milder Murgh Tikka Makhni - both very different but both seasoned and cooked perfectly. They haven't tried to fit to many tables into the restaurant, so it feels spacious, uncrowded and not too noisy, and that, together with the friendly, attentive, but unhurried service, all goes together to make a really relaxing enjoyable night out.

Located within the Roebuck Inn in what I imagine was the original dining room of the Inn. This is an indian restaurant, not the usual High St Bangladeshi style food. Everything we ordered tasted lovely. The portion sizes are a little small but the flavours are very authentic. One dish in particular was absolutely excellent - tarka dal - so difficult to find really well cooked dal. This was awesome, beautifully seasoned, fresh tasting, not stodgy and dry nor too runny - just right. I could have ate just that all night. Don't go here expecting the usual 'fake' dishes like chicken tikka masala or bland factory made stuff like chicken korma. This is authentic indian food very nicely cooked. The staff were lovely people too, very friendly and helpful and kept making sure everything was all right for us. As an added bonus, one of us had apple pie for dessert - definitely home made and came with freshly made custard - very yummy. Do give it a try.

The food here is really exceptional. On the face of it it looks like your standard curry house but in fact the dishes are more authentic and it really shines through. The Deccan lamb and the murgh tikka makhani are two of the best Indian dishes i've ever tasted. The restaurant is situated inside an ancient coaching inn that dates back to the 15th century, but unfortunately has now been surrounded by modern roadways and so the place feels a bit like its sitting on a roundabout. However, inside it retains the character of old england with low ceilings and wooden beams in the small public bar. This kind of jars for a curry house and in fact it's usually always quiet for a sit down meal - which is a shame. The service however is really friendly despite the lack of atmosphere. Great for a relaxing intimate meal and high quality food.

I've lived near Roebuck for some years now and was interested when Nirvana first started advertising a few years back.TBH, the place doesn't look much from the outside, and there's little in the way of signage, so we'd not bothered going in.BUT, the other night, we decided to be brave and walked up to the restaurant. It's in the back of the Roebuck Inn. First impressions are that it looks a little old fashioned, but that's not a problem. The menu was good. There's not the same massive choice as in most Indian restaurants, but there was a good choice. We ordered drinks - which were great - and some poppadum's to start. The poppadum's came with a nice tart tamarind sauce. It's nice to get this as it seems more authentic to my trips to India (a lot of UK Indian restaurants are Bangladesh owned).Mains turned up and they were very tasty. Chicken Chetinad and Chicken Jalfrezi, Tadka Dahl and a Jeera Rice. All excellent.Service was great, and the bill was good value. We'll definitely return.

We ate here a few times when it first opened right up to early last year, I gave it 5 stars then because it was different and delivered fresh and delicately cooked Indian food.We had a takeaway last night and I must say that it was very disappointing, the light, fresh taste had been replaced by a furiously over seasoned standard set of flavours. We stuck with the dishes we’d loved so much previously; chatpata chicken and deccan lamb starters and then chicken chettinad and jalfrezi – the only new dish was kheema passanda which was as salty as the sea. It’s still as good as a standard takeaway but at the prices charged here they need to up their game again, it seems as if they have ‘dumbed down’ to High St takeaway standards – even the potato jeera has morphed into a completely different dish to that we’d originally been served.

This restaurant is part of a Best Western hotel so if you overindulge then you could sleep it off on site. What I really like here, apart from the excellent food, is the choice of drinks available including draught ale from the bar. The food is freshly prepared by an Indian chef and has always been delicious, the only potential downside is that there can be quite a long wait, but worth it. Not many people actually know about this restaurant as its part of the Best Western Roebuck Inn, and I think people just assume its part of the hotel itself, but you can eat here without having to stay at the hotel. The restaurant itself is clean and nicely laid out, if a little dated, but it is a listed building so there’s only so much they can do to modernise it. I used to favour a nearby Indian restaurant, but this place has now become my absolute favourite and we eat here regularly. The food here is more traditional than most other places, and the menu isn’t quite as extensive as many other Indian restaurants either, but the food itself is always cooked so nicely, and you can taste that its fresh ingredients being used, it’s just absolutely delicious. The staff are extremely attentive and always happy to give suggestions or ask the kitchen to adjust things to your requirements. The service is good, the food excellent and the prices very reasonable. They also do a take-out service which we have used a number of times and this is also very good.

The restaurant is part of the pub. It has lovely food and good prices. The staff are very friendly and seem to work very hard as they are often working in different areas of the pub, but always have a smile.

I've been working in the SVG area for about two years now and when I want Indian this is where I go - the Biriyani is served with a tasty yoghurt side and a salad with lime pickle.

My friends had been recommending this Restaurant to us for weeks and finally we went last night. This place is on my doorstep and I wish we had visited before now. My husband and I ordered 2 different meal s and 3 side dishes, which included, Lamb Jalfrezzi, Chicken Tandoor, Peshwari Nan, Saag Aloo, and mushroom friend rice We waited patiently with our drinks, time went passed so quick. The meal was served, all dishes at once, and we took our time to try. O M G, the frist mouthful was the best tasting, flavorsome, delicious curry, that we both have had for a very long time. I would recommend this place to anyone, The whole meal was outstanding and deliciously gorgeous, please go people, you will not be disappointed by the taste.

This was the closest I have ever been to eating the food I enjoyed in India. Not a menu created for beer swilling Brits but genuine flavoursome food creatively prepared.

Don't let you be put off just because is in a restaurant. The quality of food is very good. Possibly one of the best local Indian restaurants I've been so far. It's not cheap but but even not impossible. I would say everything was fresh prepared. Our mains was simply good, the starters was OK though a bit soaked of oil.We didn't go for the dessert so can't comment. As for the interior, the place was really nice and in line with the cuisine style.

Been to this restaurant a number of times and cannot fault the food, the menu is not vast but what they do is very good and authentic in taste (or I believe it is). The décor is basic but more than acceptable and the staff have always been helpful in explaining the dishes and their service is attentive. Not overly priced with a meal for 2 with wine about £60. DO try the Gin Chicken for starter. If there is a drawback it is that sometimes they are not that busy and the atmosphere is not that great.

No high street Bangladeshi restaurant can come close or compete with this real Indian food. Have been in Stevenage for 3 years and never found a decent Indian food around. This one is a hidden gem. Very good number of vegetarian dishes. Expect slow service sometimes as this kitchen also supports the pub in the front of the restaurant. Very friendly staff. Would highly recommended this place to anyone who wants to avoid the greasy food you get in high street.

If you like Indian food you will love this place. Completely different from a normal Indian restaurant. The food here is more homely & authentic.Menu has lots of great choices. The chef here is brilliant. Low in priceService was great, although it felt weird going to a hotel for an Indian meal but I cannot recommend this place enough. If you want to try something different try this place!

After seeing great reviews I was very disappointed with my meal. It was extremely salty my husbands dish wasnt as salty and he did eat his but I sent mine back. They brought my food back but it was still too salty. I left my meal which they didnt charge me for. The man serving us was very helpful and kind but I wont eat here again. I explained to the waiter that I had never had a salty chicken tikka masala before and he said that its a traditional indian restaurant and perhaps I wasnt used to the taste. I explained that for years I have always eaten same dish at different places and its always tasted kind of sweet an creamy not salty. Anyway there was other people there that evening and noone else seemed to be complaining about saltiness lol so perhaps me an my hub had a strange taste in our mouths

Booked a table at this restaurant for Friday evening (27 Dec), the gentleman who took the booking made it seem like they were going to find it hard to fit us in but he took my booking. We arrived at precisely 7-30pm and looked though the door, only 2 people sat at a table eating and chatting. We rang the bell as instructed and waited........and waited and waited. After 15 mins we left...so cannot comment on food etc. When you arrive at a restaurant, esp when you have booked you shuld not have to search for staff. Very disappointed.

Food was amazing. Best curry I've had in a long time. Service very good too. Only downside was there was no atmosphere in the room as very empty and cold. A real shame as the wood beams and old style decor was quite charming. Maybe they could increase their marketing and advertising and get a few more customers in, as I'd never heard of it or seen it advertised. Only spotted it by trawling through this website for different places to try. I'll definitely be back, but when it's much warmer and I don't have to eat with my coat on.

This place really is different from all the other restaurants offering curry in Stevenage. Not only is it situated in a hotel, the food is fresh, highly flavoured and contains top quality ingredients. Few of the dishes that you will find in 'normal' curry houses are here - there's no madras, vindaloo or dhansak but a collection of dishes that the waiter told me were the best from all over India. We ordered Stir Fried Prawns and Chatpata Chicken to start and followed with Chicken Biryani (old habits die hard) and Murgh Chettinad with a side order of spiced potatoes. All dishes were delicious, beautifully spiced and clearly cooked by a man who knows what he's doing. The chicken was of high quality and freshly prepared, it was actually a little too spicy for me but they will adjust all meals to suit personal taste. The only downsides were that the atmosphere was non existent; remember that this is a hotel and most of the diners are lone guests reading newspapers and checking their phones/laptops - hopefully it's better at the weekends. My other small gripe is the lack of side dishes, you have to order from the vegetarian mains if you want potatoes, chickpeas or mushrooms to accompany your main course and this is an expensive way to do it. Indeed this isn't a cheap place to eat with no main courses less than £7.50 but you are paying for quality. If you desire pile it high, tough chicken that was cooked the day before go elsewhwere,

We had a get together at this place. All colleagues decided this place as we had very good feedback from other friends. Unlike other Indian curry houses in Stevenage it was not only Indian but the food proved it. No substitutions required b any one. Nice options for vegetarians as well.

All the dishes were good in taste.Even the service was prompt and quick.Highly recommended for Indian food.

Hello fellow trip advisors, it's always a gamble when you recommend restaurants to others when it comes to your own preferences. This wonderful Indian restaurant will not need any persuasion as it stands on it's own very high standards. Their flavours of spice filled curries dance on the palette. The waiter service is extremely refined and tailored to the customer. It's as if you have your own space until such times as you need the waiter and expertly he will be there for you. The cuisine and flavour are of the highest order, the very best Indian restaurant that we have in stevenage today.Specialist dishes are available as the menu is concise. The dips are heavenly especially the tamarind one, the naan breads are impeccable well risen and flavoursome, the jalfrezi is amazing as are each of the curries ,and please be adventurous and discover them all it s worth it!

I am an Indian and was born and brought up in India. I can say that this one of the best Indian restaurants in the UK, it is the authentic food which we get in India and cook at home. There is little difference between the food which we cook at home and what we get here. We live 3 miles away from Nirvana for the past few years, we've had plenty of chance to experience their unique Indian dining experience and put them to the test; and they've never failed to deliver! The food is out of this world, and is matched by the service and friendliness of all the staff that work there. Repeatedly the best curry in the UK regardless of what you have. Well done guys, keep it up and recognition awaits, I'm sure of it!

This restaurant won't win any prizes for the olde worlde decor, wood beams and creaky floors don't really suit contemporary Indian cuisine but my god..... THE FOOD!!! A limited menu is strangely refreshing compared to the huge menus in most comparable restaurants. If the dishes I had are a measure of the rest then it seems they invest in quality not quantity of menu. Cooked to perfection with fresh ingredients bursting with flavour and the fusion of spices takes your mouth on a sensation roller coaster like nothing I have ever experienced in an Indian restaurant before. Absolutely delicious and faultless. £25 for 2 people (without drinks) bought 2 mains ( one lamb, one chicken ) a garlic naan ( fresh and mouthwatering ) , rice, popadums and pickles. Perfect. Can't recommend highly enough. Lived nearby for 7 years and never tried it as I wouldn't usually go to a hotel to eat. What a mistake!!!

Set away from the main town, and old town high streets, this restaurant does not boast or advertise as much as the others, but I can assure you, that the food is some of the best Indian food I have tasted in Stevenage. Although it has a limited menu, there is enough choice to cater for everyone. The layout is good, without having to cram everyone into tight spots, as most restaurants do, you will have plenty of space and privacy to talk to your partner/friend/spouse/lover without having your neighbouring table eavesdropping. The staff are attentive, without going over the top. A lovely experience, without having to walk out into a drunken mob on a Saturday night when you have finished your meal.

First order they sent was completely wrong and then we asked for a reorder they said they were closing soon. Managed to eventually get them to send a new one in the end that turned up all smashed in the bag and all the contents everywhere. Saved some for the next day to reheat though and found plastic from some sort of packaging inside. Do not go to or order from here!!!

Food was 2 hours late the last time we ordered so we was offered 50% off the next time. Guess what 2 and half hours later and our food still hadn't arrived. We should have learnt the first time. If you're happy waiting 2 + hours then go for it as the food is nice.. if you get it. Although we was told it'll be 25 minutes more, it never turned up and we called them to say don't bother.
