Moonsha Japanese Bar & Restaurant in Derby

The food was amazing. It was well presented, fresh and absolutely delicious. We had to wait 1 hour for it to be delivered, but it was worth it.

This was the first time I've visited Moonsha for around 10 years. In previous years, I always had positive experiences during every visit & was really impressed each time I dined here. However, I feel it has gone downhill & unfortunately, I had an underwhelming experience on this occasion. The service left a lot to be desired for...The table & menus were a bit sticky upon arrival, which I found off-putting. Two out of the three members of staff who served our table certainly weren't warm or friendly & seemed to just be going through the motions, as if they didn't want to be there. No one checked in on us to ask how everything was with our food, neither whilst we were eating or when the plates for each course were cleared. I didn't find the food & drink terrible, hence my three star review, but the Soft Shell Crab Salad starter was just alright. I liked the Moonsha Salad Dressing, but personally, I think the dish would have been much nicer (& not to mention, fresher!) if the crab meat wasn't deep-fried in a somewhat greasy batter. Also, the small portion of (deep-fried) crab meat, served alongside the salad, wasn't enough to justify the cost. I had the Seafood Ramen Soup for the main, which again, I found to be edible, but subpar. I'm not sure whether I made a bad choice or if I would have experienced the same with every other dish, but it lacked seasoning / flavour & didn't taste fresh. The Lycheetini cocktail tasted amazing & I really enjoyed it, but the garnish could've been a bit more interesting, rather than just a single glaced cherry placed into the bottom of the glass. I also had the Skittles cocktail & it tasted OK, but for the price, I was disappointed with the excessive amounts of ice that they watered it down with, as you can see from the photo. The place looks lovely with how it's been decorated, but there isn't a lot of atmosphere to match it. The fact that it was quiet early on a Saturday evening says a lot. It did get busier & more lively later on but bizarrely, started to feel more like a nightclub at this point, rather than a restaurant. This is partly due to the type of music they play. In a nutshell, it's overpriced & what they charge isn't reflected in the quality of the food. The service was poor & atmosphere lacking somewhat, so for those reasons, I won't be returning in a hurry.

First time using chop sticks, love the robot server as well. Nice friendly atmosphere and plenty to choose from menu.

The experience was quite interesting, having a robot get the food to the table, the food came out pretty quick. The food was just amazing, I loved and enjoyed everything we ordered. If you want to sit near the bar to watch the cooking performance, make sure to book in advance. They have a small parking space just behind the restaurant. Will definitely come back again to try other items!!!

I like to try and support smaller businesses. Decided to come here over Wagamama.. Gyoza was frozen, Katsu bland. (My reply to Review response:- A 10 year old hygiene certificate is irrelevant to the fact you serve frozen and processed food. Your windows are so dirty that you can’t see out of them.) The restaurant was rather worn out and dirty. Really don’t like being negative but, I’ve no idea where all these positive reviews have come from. The best I can say is it’s not too expensive and has parking to the rear

I normally wouldn't go out of my way to leave a bad review, even after the food not being all that good. However, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that one friend of mine got a piece of beef, so rubbery that it could not be broken down in any way or form, permanently lodged in his throat. Thankfully, he was still able to breath and speak but the beef was so firmly stuck in there that he had to go to hospital for 2 days while they removed it.

8 of us went for my husband's birthday and had a wonderful time. t The staff were fantastic and service was quick. We sat on an Teppenyaki table and our chef was great, the food was tasty and we all ordered something different. You get great value for money and I recommend the Yaki Soba noodles and Teppenyaki chicken.

Great restaurant, service and food were impeccable, the cute little robot ferrying dishes around the restaurant was a lovely touch as well for someone that has visited Japan a few times. It's not the cheapest restaurant, but with an open plan kitchen you can see them prepare every dish as they are ordered so you know it is fresh so I think it's money well spent. There was even some entertainment from one of the chefs to a group with children which was nice to see and something extra that elevates this place above others. Recommended.

This place was actually horrible

Absolutely terrible, should off left when the glasses for our wine were dirty! Ordered a number of items nothing was fresh everything had a strong sour fishy smell, the octopus smell was so strong. Tried to pull it apart it was like rubber the waiter tried to claim octopus is always rubbery! The other dishes were worst the box thing the rolls were over cooked with nothing inside them, the breaded chicken not 100% it was chicken, the lettuce was turning brown. The sushi chicken rolled in rice and Black Sea weed were lovely in appearance that’s were it ends, the strong fishy smell was so strong that when we moved them to the other end of the table we could still smell the strong stale fish smell. Worst place I have visited.

I went for lunch here today. The service was lovely but the room was very cold and the food sadly mediocre the sauces tasted like they were something out of a bottle rather than being homemade and didn't taste that fresh. There seem to be a lot of sugar in the plum sauce.

Was taken here tonight by friends and although I'd not had Japanese food before I absolutely loved it. We tried lots of different starters and they were all Fantastic the mains were great too. The robot servers and watching the chefs cook and prepare sushi was really entertaining. Will definitely be returning and recommending to others

Beautiful food and lovely service. We went for my daughter’s birthday and it was fantastic! We all had a selection of different items but all were cooked to perfection.

Spent £40 on sushi and they couldn't even provide chopsticks even though I asked. Bit tight.

Really worth going to the tepanyaki bar. The service and staff and not forgetting the food is absolutely amazing. It is our favourite restaurant. We come any chance we can (for any occasion we can think of!) Good value for money. I am always recommending to others.

Very tasty food. Grilled Beef Sushi & Rainbow Sushi were great. The crispy pork katsu is my top choice here. Very friendly staff. Have been before and will go again.

I loved the plum wine at the restaurant. The bento boxes were good value for money and very filling. The sushi was delicious, as well as the mochi ice-cream. We watched the tepanyaki chef cook for other people and that looked like such great fun. I'd definitely go back for that again in the future. The restaurant has its own parking with limited spaces which is convenient.

Every time I go there with family we always enjoy the experience. For me it is the best restaurant in Derby.

I came here with some preconceptions based on the reviews. Added to that, the building itself looks a bit down at heel. But I was genuinely impressed at the food quality here. The menu, I think, is a little too big and not very descriptive. But both times I’ve been here I’ve taken potluck and it’s worked out well. Also, some reviews say it’s expensive: it’s no more expensive than a local curry.

*****Its flavour was a whole lot of absolutely nothing****** Well talk about getting what you ask for. I ordered chicken curry with rice. I got chicken, some curry sauce, and steamed rice. Zero other ingredients were in the meal. And I mean ZERO, no veg, nothing. I even asked the person that served me, whats your recommendation for this dish. they told me, I ordered. It was the blandest takeout I've had. I put it in the fridge and will add my own ingredients, veg and meat tomorrow and reheat just to make sure it doesn't go to waste. I don't want to be a kill joy, that's rude but this meal was so bland its not even funny.

Came in for Partners birthday. Saw the outside of the building and became confused but enjoyably surprised when walked in the building seemed to transform. We had Karaage and grilled king prawn to start both was electrifying on the mouth. The deluxe platter sushi was beautifully presented like jewels. We then had Katsu-don and duck -don. I had the Katsu as I’m not a fan of plum sauce but partner says it was so good. Katsu was amazingly mouthwatering. Not to forget the little robot we smiled every time it brought our food.

I've been a huge fan of this restaurant for many years. I was not disappointed this visit either. I visited with my Brother, who had Chicken Ramen (he's famous for always ordering this) and I had Unagi Don, Miso Soup and Agedashi Tofu (Pictured). Honestly it's THE best Japanese food I've ever had! The Unagi was amazing, so soft and delicious, not rubbery at all. The Miso is always fantastic, but the Agedashi Tofu also blew me away for how light and tasty it was. I will always recommend this place to anyone. It needs to be more popular than it is.

I have been here a few times over the years. The live teppanyaki is fun and great for groups. The service is top notch very attentive always cleaning the tables and the robot server is a delight for the younger ones. I usually have a sushi platter but the ramen seafood bowl is also a favourite. My son enjoyed his bento box and my husband loved his donburi. I’ve even tried the karaoke lounge upstairs on a work night out years ago which was a laugh. If I could say anything is it’s starting to look a bit tired and could do with a bit of a refresh on the decor. If you’re just getting into Japanese food I highly recommend.

Our experience was much better than some of the reviewers. We had sushi and sashimi which were good - maybe not quite up to Ebi Sushi, but good by UK standards. We then had bento boxes. The tempura was fine. I was a bit perplexed by the inclusion of spring rolls which I didn't think were Japanese. The service was good. I think the robot waiter is a bit of a gimmick but it was fun. The place is a bit gloomy.

Mixed reviews from the family. Wife wasn't satisfied with the beef teriyaki bento. Wasn't as expected and daughter said the beef was chewy. I enjoyed my salmon teriyaki bento and other daughter enjoyed her seafood udon. The robot server was interesting and entertaining.

Genuinely such a homely place. Great decoration and lighting, the service was outstanding and the food was the best part! Everything was incredible and the sushi was the best I've ever had. Prices are great too! We don't have any photos because we wanted to enjoy the night. We ordered black and pepper squid, hot Chilli prawns, chicken and veg gyosas, octopus, and the sushi platter. It's had lots of veg on the side and everything was seasoned beautifully. Really loved it! My partner was over the moon at the selection of drinks. The Wasabtini was fun and the Regal 18-year-old... he called it Liquid gold. The robot helper was very entertaining to watch and it played songs. Thank you for the lovely night!

I think this place recycles leather shoes and serves them as beef..... A lot of the £80+ take out order we received was actually really quite good. I'm disappointed to have to write this review and will probably never visit again, for the following reasons: The beef soba..... Not good. It was inedible. Truly inedible. Note that I am not criticising the entire meal. However, the attitude of the staff the following day was as abysmal as the beef soba. Our order was delivered around 2130 on this particular evening. So, by the time we had finished eating, it was too late to call and advise them we weren't happy with one of the items. As a result, I called the following evening (having been at work during the day). I thought, surely as it's just 1 item, they'll apologise and perhaps give me a credit toward our next meal. Wrong. They were insufferably rude, told me I should have called that night (I explained they would have been closed) and told me to email them. Did they reply? No.... No they did not. It is worth mentioning that this could have been a good review, had they bothered to sort out my issue, but as they have had ample opportunity and chose not to, here it is. I never EVER post about anywhere, without first giving them the opportunity to rectify a wrong. Do visit immediately if you enjoy spending a lot of money on mediocre (and awful) food / enjoy a diet of leather and desire an awful service.

Very authentic place. The food is absolutely delicous. They got a big variety to choose from and all of their dishes come with their own authentic taste, you can definettly fell that the staff are putting a lot of effort inside their cultural food. The staff are so friendly and kind and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. We are glad that we discovered this hidden gem, because it feels a lot of people dont know this authentic japanese restaurant. I deffinetly recommend trying this place.

1.-soup (it's just WATER) there were 3 crackers and a couple of nuri leaves cut into slices. 2.- there was cucumber and salmon sushi (VERY SMALL, without avocado). 3.- sushi with tuna SPECIALLY ordered SPICY, they brought it not spicy at all (there was a drop of hot sauce, which is sold in stores, not prepared in a restaurant!) 4. - the food was not brought immediately, but gradually! We were forced to wait for the food to be brought to EVERYONE and only then did we start eating (it’s not nice to eat when someone else doesn’t have his food). 5.- MIX sushi came with MAYONNAISE! Terrible ! I don’t know a single restaurant where the decor is MAYONNAISE (this is not correct) + the sushi is so BIG that you don’t know HOW to put it in your mouth! 6.- wasabi is OLD, DRY and NOT SPICY! So I'm not surprised why the restaurant is empty. If a customer orders SPICY sushi, then please bring SPICY (without a drop of store-bought hot sauce)! The restaurant was disappointing. The only tasty dishes were the seafood noodles, beef rice and chicken rice.

Arrived for dinner at 0600 . Starters at 0630 and then waited until 0745 for mains . Awful service despite food being OK . No explanation for service problems . Last time coming here .

My Mother has always called me a disappointment, however after taking her here that’s changed thanks to the mutual hatred of Moonsha after the first and very much last visit. The McDonald’s I had on the way home felt gourmet compared to what we were served, the reason we needed the Golden Arches drive through was due to leaving 90% of our meal. Appears the chef has never heard of seasoning? Everything had the same dull and plain flavour, great if you have zero requirement for a tasty meal. The whole place was sticky, dark and smoky from the excessive oil on the grills. The whole place gave seedy brothel and dingy nightclub vibes. The manager needs a personality transplant or more than likely a career change. I’d prefer to attempt to walk to the actual moon than step foot in this hellhole again.

Looking from the outside of the restaurant, there are numerous fast food establishments, kebabs, pizza, burgers etc…. For the love of what is holy, please go to any of those than this place. I was once drunk in a taxi and dropped a kebab on the floor of the cab, sadly I continued to eat it, I can honestly say it was more enjoyable than the food I experienced here. I’m convinced it’s harder to make food taste that bland than actually make it enjoyable. Now the service…… Well I’ve never been a hostage or a prisoner of war, but I’d take a stab at the fact they get better customer service. I’d also not hesitate to have a guess their meal came at the same time as other hostages. Have you ever been to a restaurant and needed a shower and to wash all your clothes when you get home, we’ll guess what ladies and gentlemen, we have. I smelt like I’d done a 12hr shift at the local chippie, then spent 3hrs putting out the colossal fire that had erupted. Guys, save yourself a few quid, or many. Get a bottle of wine, order a Shalimar, pop a bit of Barry White on and lower the lights, maybe pop a finger in, but if you love disappointment, food that tastes like it’s been made in a hole somewhere, luke warm beer and being insulted after handing over money, then this is the place for you! For what should have been a lovely experience and great meal, turned into a nightmare - if you want great teppanyaki try Ginza in Nottingham. Teppanyaki dishes took too long, the rice was served 30+ minutes before anything else, however what followed was flavourless and plain. The beef was extremely over cooked and stone cold which was then followed by slimy chicken. The veg was plain and unseasoned, it had also been sat on the hot plate for the best part of 45 minutes. The rice was probably the highlight, which says it all. It felt like they were short a chef or two. No interaction or engagement with any guests, with too many people trying to be served at the same time which lead to things taking forever and plates being left to go cold. In the end we ended up leaving the majority of dishes and asked to talk to the manager who topped the evening off by being extremely rude and arrogant, not willing to take any of our feedback onboard even though we weren’t the only guests who had left the majority of their food due to it being sub par. Overall, avoid unless you want a dreadful experience from start to finish and pay for the privilege. Atmosphere gets two stars, thanks to the large table behind us who kicked off for the majority of the evening due to waiting over an hour to even get served.

I attended moonsha this evening with a group of friends to celebrate mine and my other friends birthday. We booked the have the teppenyaki menu and we were all looking forward to the experience. My partner and I had been checking the menu in anticipation and we were so excited we didn’t really eat all day. When we got to moonsha we all decided quickly what we wanted. I am the only veggie so went for option a, everyone else went for option b. Being a veggie I am aware that often my food will come at slightly different times to everyone else, however my starters and mains came a good 20 minutes before the teppenyaki chef had even started. When the teppenyaki chef started, we were expecting an interactive experience with the chef and thought there would be a “show” with flames on the grill etc. there was no interaction with the chef whatsoever, he started by cooking the steak which was then left on a plate while he cooked the chicken, then salmon then eventually handed over. The steak was overcooked and chewy, the chicken didn’t look edible and had a slimy texture. The last part of the menu was vegetables, some unseasoned, soggy bean sprouts were left on the side then finally handed down. All in all, the fried rice was edible, everything else not so much. Throughout the meal, no one approached us to check everything was okay, in fact the only ambience in the restaurant was a table behind us who were loudly complaining that they had been seated an hour and not yet been served. We went to find someone to talk about the bill as we were all extremely disappointed. We told the waitress we were unhappy and she immediately got defensive and said “everyone else here has enjoyed their food” and ironically gestured to empty seats around us that were accompanied by piles of food where the other guests round the teppenyaki table had left without finishing the food. She said she would get a manager, he eventually came over and was also defensive, he offered us a 10% discount and walked away. My friend had to go on a goose chase around the restaurant to find him again. He came back over and said 30% and walked off again. My friend then again had to go and get him, apologizing and letting him know the food was not up to par, we aren’t looking for a free meal and would be happy to settle at 50%. He came back with a new bill with 50% off and slammed it down in silence. My friend paid and as soon as the payment had gone through, the manager said “I hope you never come back here”. All 6 of us were stunned to silence. The manager stomped off and we left as quickly as we could. I have never been made to feel so uncomfortable and cannot believe a manager would be so rude. I’m sure the manager will be delighted to know I will not be returning to moonsha and I want to share my experience to ensure no one else does either. The food is sub par, service is even worse and the ambience is non existent.

As usual I came back to this place. The staff are amazing food is awesome and portions are big so you will never leave hungry. I absolutely adore this restaurant

This was absolutely amazing. Me and two friends decided to go because it sounded good and had reasonable prices on the website but I’m pretty sure all three of us had a religious experience while eating the food here. The sushi was the best I’ve ever had, the ramen was delicious, and the food was brought out by a robot with a cat face and music!!! We loved it so much and will absolutely be coming here again

I was in Derby on a project and I knew that I was going to need to order some lunch in and after looking through my options online I decided to order from MoonSha which is a Japanese Bar and Restaurant. I ordered the Moonsha Sushi Platter Deluxe which was delicious but for thirty pounds I expected a larger portion than what I got.

Genuinely lovely place, went there tonight for a date night - we'd seen it online so we thought we'd try it out. The gyoza and ramen bowl was absolutely lovely, and the portion size of the ramen bowl was immense! Boyfriend loved his takoyaki and tempura bento box, portion size for the bento was also amazing. would definitely go there again and recommend to anyone who likes Japanese food.

Would 100% recommend. We had Edamame beans - delicious Salt and pepper squid - massive pieces of battered squid Chilli king prawns - absolutely amazing, so so tasty King prawn skewer - that was good too Bento boxes - chicken, beef and salmon ones were all fab - sauce was amazing. Rice was sticky and lovely Sushi boat - would recommend to anyone who likes sushi Visited for my daughters 14th birthday, service was fab, waitresses all friendly. Nice little novelty of the robot singing happy birthday whilst delivering the food too! Thanks for a brilliant experience

The food was good, but the service was fantastic, especially when interacting with the younger (children) people eating.

Quick delivery and hot, tasty food. Enjoyed the seafood soba although we didn’t see any scallops. Hand rolls and taster set were fresh and tasty.

Came for the teppanyaki experience, a bit confusing as they generally don't allow mixed ordering of teppanyaki & alacarte? Means if you're sat at the teppanyaki area the whole group should have teppanyaki menu. One of the server later allowed 1 of my party of 4 to opt for alacarte and was really helpful. The teppanyaki food is below average and very salty, fried rice especially salty that I cannot eat more than a few spoons. Meat portion is generous but the teppanyaki cooking is not interesting as well, have been to other teppanyaki restaurants where we enjoyed both cooking process and food. Overall not keen, there are better places for Japanese food.

We've been here 3 times and each are an experience, we tried the teppanyaki bar for my wife's birthday and the chef kept us entertained and fed amazing experience. The portions are good value, and atmosphere is a credit to the owner. There is fantastic variety on the menu even service by a robot waiter! Definitely our favourite restaurant.

First try and I am disappointed, it is not value for money at all! For almost £50 we barely had anything to eat, the portion are minute and some dishes are of a lower quality than your local takeaway! I do not recommend, I will not order again from them!

We went to Moonsha on the 22nd for our daughter's birthday meal. As it was a Tuesday evening it wasn't busy. The menu is easy to follow and pictures help with the descriptions, the staff were friendly and efficient. Prices of starters (and some mains) were higher than other places but they were very good. Plenty of choice for mains and again, food was good. All food is brought out by an odd robot, a bit of a gimmick but certainly made us smile. My only criticisms were that there wasn't much choice for wines and maybe a bit more interaction and help with choosing food if (like us) you don't have any experience of Japanese food.

We had the teppanyaki experience. Very good price for the amount of the food served. However, the service is absolutely ridiculous, waited so long for drinks, bill, etc, but then the food came out all in 30 min, we were still eating the first course, when the second one was given, which for us it was too much rush in eating considering you pay over £100 for 2 people, but they want you gone. The food was fresh and nicely cooked in front of us, but had to take it all away because I was still eating second course when the third came out and it obviously went cold. Probs won’t return to this particular place.

Simply the worst Before I start I must emphasise this is NOT a Japanese restaurant Walked with my son to eat dinner The guy was very welcoming and showed us to our table The decoration would drive any self respecting Japanese person to commit harakiri Massive posters of Mount Fuji with pink blossom and smattering of cheap figures of tradition Japanese dancers And that’s where the good news ends The outrageous prices for starters We ordered Starters Salt and pepper squid 4-5 pieces of tiny bit of smelly squid concealed with tasteless limp batter covered in raw onion and carrot slices Chicken tori karaage Well that was gross fake chicken that made McDonalds chicken nuggets taste like gourmet . King prawns 4 king prawns in a bath of treacle with raw onion and carrots slices Mains Beef bento box and soup The soup tasted like it had passed through the chef not by him The beef was the cheap bland stuff they get from the cash and carry precooked and microwaved or swirled in a wok for effect a horror show in a Bath of gravy, treacle and onion, carrots slices and a partridge and pear tree Chicken bento box Same as above with the same onion and carrot slices in the Bath of gravy and honey The least blonde thing was the boiled rice lump All this was served on a robot that blurted out sickly pop songs from the charts back in 2013 The place had a dirty sticky feel about it like one of them dingy 90s nightclubs I didn’t eat my main and the waiter Saw that and must have given me more respect for not eating expensive garbage . This is the worst Chinese food I have ever tasted avoid the disappointment find a wagga mama it would be cheaper and possibly better

Absolutely awesome evening, food was fantastic, cocktails 🍸 were perfect, staff friendly and very attentive

We had the seafood teppanyaki which came with miso soup, small chicken starter, egg fried rice, prawns, lobster, salmon, scallops, beef and duck. Everything was yum and the chef was friendly, attentive and gave us amazing experience. I only took videos so don’t have photos of the teppanyaki

Amazing food, full of flavour, favourites have to be the Teriyaki chicken skewers, chicken gyosas and katsu don. Will definitely order from here when in Derby again......probably next week!

Nice family meal out. Kids loved the robot server. The food was tasty and the service was good. It would have been nice to have some sushi options on the Bento boxes. We had to buy this separately. Good portions at a reasonable price.

Most recent was for lunch with the family. All family members found choices which suited their palate. All served by "catbot'. Very tasty and an enjoyable lunch was had by all.
