I went here on Saturday for my birthday and while eating my starter (scallops with lentils) I found 2 stones in the food! It was my birthday so I tried to don’t make a big deal about it and mentioned to the waiter who said sorry and that was it. Neither the chef or manager came to apologize. I put the two stones back on the plate so the waiter could show the chef as they probably came from the lentils. But again, it was like nothing happened. Problem now is that as soon as we got home I noticed one of the stones chipped my tooth. I called back nobody answered. I emailed and even attached a picture of my tooth and haven’t heard back from them. So we paid a full meal over £120 and I got a chipped tooth and zero care from any of them, not even a reply to my email.

Visited during Aberdeen Restaurant week. I had the Prawn Toast followed by the Hake and shouldn’t have, but did have the Bakewell Tart. 3 courses x £30 proved to be excellent value. It was so positive to see it so busy and diners supporting an independently owned Cafe. Moon Fish has a charm and elegance which is unique to Aberdeen. We are returners and always leave with the feeling of being well looked after and that the food delicious and beautifully presented. See you next time 👌 and thank you.

I am convinced I will never eat a more perfect prawn toast unless I return. The gentle spice and perfect crunch of the toast combined with the tender prawn filling was divine. Followed by a slow cooked melt in the mouth, generous chunk of rib of beef, splodge of tangy BBQ style sauce, with cucumber and radish salad, a side of broccoli with parmesan and really good chips. Pudding was a divine Bakewell tart. If you are in the vicinity it would be a crime not to eat here.

We booked for an evening meal and we're running late because of Aberdeen's medieval taxi service. A small and intimate room with lots of tables, but a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Very friendly and attentive staff with a good choice on the menu. We both had 3 courses and a couple of glasses of wine and for 90% of the meal, it was perfect. The highlight for me was the treacle beef that was cooked to perfection and served at the optimum temperature. Bravo! The only complaint, and I fully accept that food is very subjective by its nature, but I was really disappointed with the scallops starter. Bearing in mind there's a £3 supplement, I was expecting more than one thinly sliced scallop. The gazpacho just didn't work. I had a bite of a chilli in the first spoonful and couldn't really taste anything else for the rest of the dish. I'll reiterate, the rest of the meal was fantastic and it certainly hasn't put me off returning, but I felt the plate just wasn't value in any way.

Having free time during a trip to Aberdeen I fancied a bit of fine dining and for the most part Moonfish Café came up trumps. Being unable to choose I took two starters: three Loch Fyne oysters with pineapple & homemade fermented hot sauce, then the steak tartare toast with pickled egg yolk & truffle mayo. Both dishes were superb, best oysters I've ever had with the complex flavours not hiding the top class shellfish. Then came the main course, grilled hake in a lobster bisque, and disappointed. Fish was perfectly cooked, but under seasoned, while the bisque lacked a depth of flavour and that necessary feel of luxury. My fault, six oysters and the tartare would have been a perfect lunch, I got greedy. But three dishes and two large glasses of wine for £50 was pretty excellent value all told.

I made a good decision by visiting Moonfish for the first time. This restaurant was busier than I expected considering it was a Tuesday evening. Claire and Morgan were excellent in the way they looked after the diners: it's a pleasure to watch good teamwork. Efficient and professional in their care of the customers. The halibut main course was perfectly cooked and the best I have eaten for a long time. My buttermilk parfait dessert was unusual but equally pleasing. I am happy to recommend Moonfish to locals and visitors to Aberdeen.

We had a family dinner at Moonfish café. The positives: the decor was pleasant and the food was rather tasty. The negatives: the seating arrangements were cramped ( with one of the tables almost blocking the entrance to the bathroom). The service was very poor. The waiters forgot our order twice and made us wait a long time between courses. There was some confusion regarding the menu formulas (2 or 3 courses) and we were charged for 3 courses when we had actually ordered two-course menus. After pointing out that we were overcharged by 30£, the owner/chef failed to understand his own pricing and it took a while to settle the issue.

Terrible experience. My partner had the lamb and it was full of fat and inedible. Drinks order was wrong. Had to ask four times for the bill. Had different staff asking us the same questions. First time in Aberdeen and hunting for good food we discovered the Moon Fish Cafe - and what a gem of a discovery! Descending to the restaurant through the inky evening mist down the ancient stairs off the grey granite drabness of Aberdeen’s Union Street was like sliding down the Batpole into a magical subterranean culinary haven. The restaurant is a hidden gem half-way up a cobbled alleyway in the shadow of the 12th century Kirk of St Nicholas. By seven pm on a Thursday evening the sleek, airy ground-floor dining room — with huge tall windows and a comfortable wooden tables and chairs — was already packed. For a place heralded as a “cafe”, Moon Fish is deceptively and enticingly misleading - its daily menu in reality is fine dining served without hype by unfussy and clever staff in a studiously informal atmosphere. Our special thanks to Rebecca and Jessica for fitting us in at short notice and for their impeccable service (and the birthday fizz!) Moon Fish Cafe is the creation of Michelin-starred chef Brian McLeish who was a Masterchef finalist. Despite the twinkle of his Michelin star there is no glitzy glamour here, no pretentiously careographed precision, no stuffy servers swanning around. Instead, this is that great little place where you want to return to again and again, a small and intimate restaurant that serves unpretentious excellence with a side of something very special. The service is personal and casually elegant and the atmosphere is convivial - it is like going to a dinner party at a friend’s house, rubbing elbows and chatting with fellow diners at neighbouring tables (can’t remember the last time this happening in a British restaurant). Head chef Brian McLeish greets his customers with a smile as he casually strolls in and out of the kitchen in jeans and trainers, occasionally helping out his staff - he took our orders and served water at our table when we first arrived. This is a tiny little restaurant with just 12 tables but it packs a great punch and serves food that is simply wonderful. Ours was flawless and a fusion of delicate and exquisitely fresh ingredients - the only issue was the speed it took us to devour it all (less than 100 seconds per plate!) Starter was mackerel escabeche with courgette and creme fraiche and coriander according to the menu - but in reality it was far too delectable packing in so many gorgeously delicate flavours with the lightest touch including the most flavorsome pickled carrots I have ever tasted, not to mention a heavenly fusion of honey, paprika, orange juice, a hint of saffron perhaps? Had to shamelessly scoop up the jus with the delicious nutty bread - it would have been a shame to waste even a drop. We could have easily eaten another plate of it, or more. Next came Hake Motoyaki - miso glazed aubergine topped with slivers of toasted hazelnuts served with grilled hake and a delicious aubergine puree infused with cumin and spices. Dessert was a pistachio tres leches pudding soaked in spices (and a smattering of rose water maybe?) with a strawberry and cardamom ice cream and fresh strawberries. The menu is short and seasonal: just four starters, four main dishes, four puddings, with an optional cheese plate with plum paste and delicacies. And the most delicious bread for mopping up. My husband said it was the best meal he had had for a very long time. We are so lucky to have discovered the Moon Fish Cafe and cannot recommend it highly enough. We can’t wait to be back. Thank you for everything - a most wonderful and memorable evening.

¡Fabuloso!

Not as good as i hoped ...Having not been to Moonfish for sometime myself and my friend decided to go for a girly Saturday lunch date.We were greeted promptly and sat to our table before soon having our orders taken. My friend opted for the terrine which she said was tasty but nothing outstanding and i opted for the mussels which are always a firm favourite of mine. The portion of mussels were a decent size however the flavour was a bit lacking and the broth was far too salty which i see someone else has also noted in the reviews so i dont feel this was a one off.For the mains we both chose the Hake with leeks. It was presented beautifully and although you could tell the fish was cooked well it was too overpowered with the flavour of mustard. I appreciate mustard was mentioned in the description however it was just too overpowering in the dish which took away from the delicate flavour of the Hake and the Leeks.Feeling a bit disappointed with our meal we decided to skip desert and pick up a nice treat with a coffee elsewhere.Whilst the meal wasn’t bad as such , it certainly wasn’t as good as i had hoped it would be.

Limited choice for the lunch voucher but what was there was very good and if you wanted you can get something off the full menu at a cost. I especially enjoyed the vegetarian options on offer but there was fish and meat dish on offer. My favourite was the celeriac voulete (soup) which was really good and accompanied by their home made fermented soda bread which is a must if you go. I paid extra for the desert but it was really worth it as the Creme Brûlée was fantastic with toasted almond granola. Overall a great place for lunch in the city centre.

I haven’t been to Moonfish in several years however having recently moved back to Aberdeen I wanted to come back and see if it was as good as I remembered - unfortunately it was not. The servers were very friendly but we were 50mins before our starter was served. The tables are also in unnecessarily low causing you to constantly lean forward and you can’t cross your legs - appreciate this is nothing to do with the food but it means you aren’t very comfortable. I had the salt baked celeriac which I was really looking forward to as I love celeriac however what I received was very bland. None of the flavours sang and instead it was just a very plain dish and not what I was expecting. Having waited for so long for the starter to arrive I ate it but it was due to hunger and not enjoyment. My husband on the other hand had the mackerel and said it was the best he had had. For main I opted for the gnocchi, it was dense and not light and fluffy. It was served on a bed of ricotta, there was no sauce or dressing and so this with the ricotta and squash just became a really heavy, again rather bland meal. I had a few bites and left it. My husband had the venison which he wasn’t blown away with either but he was ravenous and so ate his along with the rest of my gnocchi because he was so hungry. We also had espresso martinis which tasted like they had been pre made and were very sweet and not well made.I hate writing bad reviews but after spending £100 on a meal you expect a good experience but this just didn’t hit the mark.

I didn't enjoy my meal at all which is a shame because I had high hopes. Mussels to start looked good, nice big bowl but the broth it was served in was way too salty. Ordered the venison as a main which sounded delicious on the menu but unfortunately it was just not good at all. The two tiny pieces of meat was overcooked and tough. There was something on the plate which was just described as "potato" on the menu. No idea what it actually was, it was a bit like a mcdonalds hash brown which again was unbelievably salty. Cauliflower was bland and not quite cooked enough. There were smears of two unidentifiable kinds of sauce on the plate but they too just tasted salty. Sable breton for dessert was fine.Service was nice and friendly however when my friend asked to swap the blue cheese for a different cheese on the 3 cheese board he was told it was impossible. He had to order the 5 cheese board on which there of course plenty of cheeses that could have replaced the blue. Totally ridiculous and bizarre rule to have.Won't be going back.

My wife had bought an Itison voucher for a two course lunch for 2 people (for £25 I think) so we arrived at the pre-booked time and were met with a friendly greeting from the staff who were excellent throughout our visit. The menu was short - which I prefer - (3 starters and 3 mains) whilst still thoughtfully catering for meat, fish and veggie in both courses. My wife started with ham hock terrine which was lovely but I think my mussels in cider cream sauce (with bacon!) trumped it. 10 out of 10. I followed with a very tender piece of hake in a nice garlicky sauce, purple cauliflower and a drizzle of squid ink setting off the presentation just so. My wife’s shrimp fried chicken was also very tasty, with a cheeky spicy kick. All in all top class. Will be back.

Moon Fish is an ideal place for a special meal. Unfortunately when my birthday falls, they are closed so - better late tan never.

I had my first visit to moonfish cafe today and it did not disappoint. The portions may be small but every mouthful was to die for! Personally I prefer that to huge plates of nothingness. I will certainly return again.

The reserved table was ready at 19:30. We entered through the narrow entrance from the dark and quiet street. The table were situated in the middle of the dining room. Our coats were taken care of and we sat down on the narrow chairs. The menu came on the table and we choose monkfish as a starter and the halibut as the main dish. First we had a glass of sparkling wine of reasonable quality. We got bread and cheese spread with onions. Stil mineralwater from Deeside and a good riesling arrived. The monkfish starter was a delight in taste and texture, but would have done better with a touch of presentation. The main dish presentation was unpick able. A Devine combination. The fish was cooked to perfection and the garnish lifted it to a exquisite level. The riesling paired perfectly. Deserts were chosen, sable breton and caramel pudding, together with a glass of Tokaij wine. Both dishes to envy. Soft caramel pudding, crunchy nuts and tokaij, say no more. The sable breton with chocolate, peanut puree and icecream was also a treat. Would have loved to taste the cheese, but ther were no room for it. Thank you so much for a delightful evening. We'll be back.

I had lunch with a couple of friends based on the recommendation of a colleague. Sadly it was not a great experience. The portions were small which sometimes is not a bad thing. However one of our number was ill the next day which she put down to the lunch. Have not been back since.

Enjoyed a visit with my family for a birthday celebration and had a wonderful time. Our food was perfect; beautifully cooked with diverse flavours and beautifully presented. Service was great; very attentive and recommendations regarding the menu were provided. The menu was fairly small but there was ample selection, and the drinks were very good. Will be sure to return.

We made an enquiry several weeks in advance and could only get an early dinner booking! The early booking ended up working well - so we were glad that we did not miss this opportunity!! Set back on a side street from the main drag, this unassuming establishment really must be tried. Smart but relax ambience, concise seasonal menu often using local produce, preparation & presentation excellent, knowledgable & professional service with just a hint of laid back and reasonably priced. Loved the menu - what an evening.

At short notice, I managed to get a 6.30 booking on a Saturday night, which meant we couldn't have the training menu but that wasn't an issue. All the dishes were excellent, as we had been told to expect. The service was excellent too - very helpful and attentive, cheerful without being pushy.

We been to Moonfish a number of times over the past few years - it provides reliably top class food in a relaxed and stylish ambience, combined with great service. Although I have reviewed the restaurant previously, I have felt compelled to submit a further review having had the tasting menu experience recently for a special occasion. The dishes were another notch up from the usually (very good) menu, all expertly prepared and presented with delicious combinations of flavours. We opted for the paired wines which complemented the various courses wonderfully. The only minor quibble would be that the wine pairing did not kick in until the 3rd course, and it would have been nice to have an aperitif and/or something to go with the start of the menu. Otherwise, this most recent visit has confirmed that Moonfish is easily the best restaurant in Aberdeen!

My 3 friends and I ate here on a Saturday evening. We were booked in for 7.30 and arrived to a buzzy warm restaurant with friendly staff who welcomed us in. The restaurant is wee but you don’t feel like you’re too close to other tables and it’s easy to get seated. It creates a really lovely atmosphere. The food was incredible from the curry starter to the chocolate desert (and everything in between) we were left speechless after every course! The portion sizes were perfect, we were left full but still able to enjoy it all. The price was very reasonable too! We will definitely be back!

Wanted a seafood restaurant during a short break to Aberdeen, and once I discounted the chippies*, we booked here. Glad we did. Food was awesome, and the tastiest risotto I've ever had. There was too much salt on the garnish though, but this is the only criticism. Staff were attentive and friendly. Highly recommended.

We ordered two standard fish and chips, just over £20. Quality of food was actually surprising. The fish tasted of actual fish, not just batter. Chips tasted too. Servers were really sweet and patient. Would recommend!

I bought fish cakes and chips. The chips were really horrible. The 1 star is not even warranted for them.
