Moffat Chippy in Dumfries & Galloway

Swimming in oil. Chips not cooked enough and soggy. Batter wet and liquid against fish.

Fish and chips made fresh and both were lovely.

Felt I needed to write in praise of The Moffat Chippy. This really is a brilliant fish and chip establishment. Always tasty and freshly cooked. Pies also scrumptious. Staff always pleasant. Thank you.

Popped here today, saw the sign on the door saying no dogs allowed! (Was just me and my dog) but the staff were fantastic and helped me get my order without leaving my dog outside! And the food was fab, best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time, fish was in a lovely thin crispy batter and chips were perfect, no grease on anything! And the dog loved his sausage! Just lovely thank you!

Okay not the best fish and chips I’ve had but passable

Just got our order, very little amount of chips and very small fish . Nothing like a portion you would expect to get for £20 . Staff was very uninterested during serving. Very disappointed! We did call to complain but got told that's the size to expect. Perhaps they need to try a fish supper from any chippy in Dumfries. We are local but won't ever be back here . No value for money.

Saturday night in Moffat and ordered our chippy supper while on a break here. Ordered online so ready to collect when we wanted. Massive portion of chips, fish & huge battered sausages. Absolutely delicious meal.

Had a family getaway just after Christmas and phoned in a big order of over £120. We drove into town to pick it up only to be told that they only accept cash - no one said on the phone 🤦 They sent us to the cash machine but my sister and I didn't have a bank card that we knew the pin number for so she went back to the chippie to explain that and see if there was anything they could do. One of the staff said - oh just scan the QR code at the bottom of your receipt and you can pay that way - wth we could have done that when we got there instead of spending 10 minutes trying to remember a bloody pin number! Service was shocking and good was mediocre (not helped by the extra wait before being dished up)

The chippy has changed hands since we last visited about 4 or so years ago. It had been excellent before so I was a little hesitant. Overcome by the sight of a battered jumbo sausage inside I tried it and was not disappointed. All food is cooked to order so we had a little wait but it was worth it. Thr batterd sausage was good, sausage nice and moist and the chips were spot on... good portion, good thick chips and no little hard bits. I didnt try the fish but will do next time....

I hadn’t had a fish supper for over a year.After being out and missing my dinner I came back to Moffat starving. The Haddock and chips was cooked as I waited. Fish very fresh,not dry,it was definitely haddock ,the batter was just the right crunch and slightly moist,chips clearly made on the premises and cooked just right. At £ 9.50 I thought it bang on my only complaint was I could have easily eaten it again as it went down so well

Amazing chicken wrap best I’ve had husband had the fish and chips which he said was really good, big portion of chip more than happy to recommend

Nice portion sizes hot food and tasty

Been here a couple times now for a take-out. Drove down specifically just for a fish supper with mushy peas! Food was made fresh on all my visits so far! Food was absolutely delicious, will be visiting again in future. You do need to pay by cash, however if you don’t have enough on you the nearest cash machine is less then a min away, worth every pence and in a way they get every penny this way (instead of paying card fees!). Staff have been very friendly and their communication is top notch. If you’re close to the area, pop in to this chippy.

Went into Moffat Chippy first time today was greeted by Kenzi with great customer service food was good. Highly recommend Moffat chippy.

Having been brought up in the Scottish Borders I am well versed in rating chippies in the area. This place is excellent, two haggis suppers that were perfect, not an ounce of grease, and the portions were more than substantial. The lady behind the counter was very nice and we had a good blether.

We had a couple of takeaways from here. Good choice to suit all tastes, great for fussy eaters! Hot, fresh food, good size portions and delicious. So easy to order on the app. Fish and chips were gorgeous. Would highly recommend a visit here.

The worst chipper I have ever had! Not sure when our food was cooked but it must of been hours before we arrived at the shop. Overall the place looked tired and could do with a big clean up. Both me and the wife had to bin our suppers. Also only take cash which is a huge red flag in 2024, can only suppose there is some tax dodging going on 🤷‍♂️

Delicious fish and chips. Lovely crispy batter on the fish. Nice portion sizes and fried in fresh veg oil I’m sure. Throughly enjoyed munching in the sun after our climb up Grey Mare’s tail. Yum Yum 😋

We stayed in Moffat and for supper we had fish & chips ( large cod). Fish was beautiful and the batter perfect, not too greasy. 2 large cod & 1 large chips was £14. One of the best I've had. Friendly service too.

It was a case of what might have been…Fish looked great in cabinet. Was ultra crispy when lad lifted it as didn’t bend 1mm and tasted great. But using polystyrene folding trays causes moisture so by time we went to eat it a minute away all batter had dissolved off fish. You wrap in paper which with these trays causes more steam. Use a single tray and wrap in paper as you are and the food would survive. Same with chips don’t use fold over polystyrene- completely soggy but crisp when initially served. We know this as also had sausages, given to us in a paper bag and batter was lovely and crispy So could so easily be a 5/5

Stopped by during our stay near Moffat. The food was cooked fresh to order and tasted delicious! A traditional chippy with friendly customer service. Nice busy atmosphere as well at 8pm, sign of a good chippy! Cash only which wasn’t an issue for us as we already had.

We always look forward to fish and chips from this chippie when down in Moffat in our motorhome,however on this occasion and in fact the last time we were disappointed,the fish was dry and the batter was soggy.l think the staff / Turkish owners should have a look at what it used to provide which was excellent.People will stop coming if this is what you now serve up…….get your act together guys please .

Superb fish and chips for a good price!

Spur of the moment decision to have a chip supper lead us to this place. Service was great and our chips, fish and deep fried haggis were cooked to perfection. Unfortunately they missed off our sausage which was for the dog and gave us an extra haggis instead. He was not impressed!!!

Very average. Not a patch on The Royal Cafe Chippy in Annan. The fish supper tonight in Moffat was very greasy. Batter was crispy but came with a lot of grease. Chips were OK.

Downloaded and ordered and paid via their app. Very easy and convenient on our arrival on holiday. We collected, but you can have delivery. Plentiful portions and good selection of options. My haddock supper was well cooked and not greasy. Everyone enjoyed their choices of fish, pizza and pies. We rounded off with a couple of deep fried Mars bars, which we cut into quarters to share - well, we are on holiday after all!

Not the cheapest chippy but was good quality, fresh and very hot so didn’t mind as much. Portion sizes good.

Had a week's holiday in Moffat and ended up here twice, once for pizzas and the second time for fish and chips. Obviously we were impressed enough the first time to go back, and we weren't disappointed. Would highly recommend this great little chippy.

Traditional chippy - our fish supper was all fresh made and delicious. Fast service - please note CASH only which in this day and age must affect business but as we discovered a cashpoint near by so we didn't miss out. Well worth a visit 👏👏

Food is always very tasty. I usually go in if I'm working in Moffat at Lunchtime, haven't tried the evening food, Pizza, Kebab etc, but I'm sure they taste amazing also.

Wow, as an Hgv tramper driver that eats out 5 nights a week, this has to be the worst I've ever come across. £8 for Donna meat & chips that wouldn't fill a ferret if it was starving because both chips & donna meat we're cold. See my previous reviews, always complementary of good food. Don't eat here 😒.

What a fantastic find! We stopped for fish and chips on a journey between Alloa and Kendal. Everything is cooked fresh to order and was really tasty, we went for the half chips with fish which was plenty of food. The staff were lovely, really chatty and friendly. We will definitely be stopping off here again!

Visited Moffat and came across this lovely family owned chippy, Best fish and chips ever, fixed the bad mood in a bite. Fish isn’t oily, leaky or soggy, and the flavours are beautiful. Chips banging same thing, curry sauce bang - ing…. Just 10/10 meal. Had to go back before I left, shame I won’t be able to visit in the near time.

We go every week after rugby training. My son rates it as the best chippy he has ever been to. I rate it as tasty.

Stopped there on way back up North. All I can really say is disappointing to say the least. Fish definitely not fresh and finished off in a soggy batter. The chips being far from crispy were soaked in fat and warm. Will definitely not use this place ever again.

Stopped for a quick snack and unearthed a little gem. Perfectly cooked chips with two sausages in beautiful crisp batter. I had a good look at all that was on offer and judging by the queue a lot of people agreed with me. Great little Chippy.

Fish, chips and peas for £10.20 The peas were cold and weren't proper homemade mushy peas, they were thin and watery - probably from a tin. Tasted ok once I'd heated them up. The fish was cooked well with nice thinly coated batter and tasty but the fish itself was very thin. The chips were ok, quite a lot of small potato bits and a little greasy, but when covered with salt and vinegar tasted fine.

Looking forward to a freshly cooked fish and a smoked sausage with large chips to share. The fish didn’t seem fresh and was overcooked and dry. The smoked sausage was cold. The chips were a normal portion padded out with scraps.to make a large portion. Definitely would not recommend.

Never thought I'd be writing this, have visited this chippy lots of times in the past few years, always happy, lovely crisp batter on the fish, lovely fresh chips etc, always good...except for tonight! So looking forward to my supper but everything was soggy like the oil hadn't been hot enough, can't describe what a let down it was, won't rush back next time I'm in the area!

Got curry chips, donar wrap and a donar kebab plus bag of chips, everyone enjoyed the food, bit of a wait getting served down to the shop being busy Sunday evening

Passing through on way to the Lothians. Always stop off for a white pudding supper. Can't get them down south. Can only describe it as sublime, light crispy batter, and freshly cooked chips.

Service was really disappointing! I phoned in my order, however my sons kids meal was missed. I went back to rectify this and the Manager wanted to charge me for the extra cost, after waiting 2 hours for my son to have his meal! It's a real shame, as this has been our local chip shop for 2 years! I can't fault the ladies, they are always lovely,

Quite a good fish( lovely cod and crispy batter) and chips - but for the price which I thought a little expensive they were a bit light on the chips. Afraid I'm a bit old school - I remember when you couldn't carry £2+ worth of chips never mind eat them!!

Stopped by today for a fish supper and it was the best fish supper I’ve had in all my years of living in Scotland the batter was beautiful and golden and most importantly crispy (however please give the fish just a few more minutes to drain and it will be perfect) other than that it was a lovely meal of Fish & Chips and possibly the best in the area

Pre-cooked white pudding & single fish was soggy and over-battered, with little taste despite eaten within 20 minutes. Reasonable price (cash only). Shan't return, alas.

Stopped by for chips. Good selection of quality fish and chips and a range of other chippy wonders. smoked battered sausage and chips and a red cola eaten by the river. Why stop in moterway services when this is the perfect break!

Wonderful chip shop , probably the best fish we've had , the batter was so light ! We also had a pizza , made to order , and waited only 10 minutes . Staff so very friendly
