Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel & Spa in Cardiff

The positives... the afternoon tea was delicious and served by a lovely lady who kept the drinks flowing. The bar area was very nicely decorated and comfortable. The gym attendant was very attentive and helped with all our queries. Now to the negatives. I am embarrassed to say I booked the spa and afternoon tea for my two daughter in laws birthdays and my mums mothers day gift. The Spa was very dated and in need of numerous repairs, the water fountain didn't work, one hairdryer was out of order, one shower was cordoned off, there were tiles fallen off the side of the pool near to the jacuzzi that needed replacing, the lights in the pool were faulty and flickering, the filter in the celing of the steam room was blocked with a towel. The whole spa looked dated and in need of refurbishment. I was very disappointed with my purchase and felt ashamed to have taken my family there.

Just returned from a weekend coach break at this hotel and would congratulate the chefs, waiters and head waiter for their excellent food. Plenty of it cooked nicely and well presented. Rooms were lovely and spacious and it was very quiet consider it's in a capital city.

This was supposed to be a 4star I don’t think so! Front desk staff were unhelpful didn’t feel welcome, they blamed the system changing over, it was a disaster from the start rooms were dated, no 4 star on show, normally u get slippers and gowns in room? Also no free bottles of water, have to buy a can!! £4 make that make sense! When asked they said not part of the service? I’m sorry but will not be coming back and warn others not to waste ur money! £4 for a can of cola??? £2 for a chocolate! Parking £41 for 2 days and no spaces! Shrugged his shoulder when there was no space to park? Said u can park in long stay carpark up the road?? The only 4 star was the spa I got to enjoy, but pool was filthy and jaquzzi well let’s say no thank you. Dinner was awful no real food (part of the package) it’s a set menu burgers or fried chicken? No vegetarian options, when asked u get superfood salad or a disgusting frozen Margarita pizza. Ended up going out! This is not a four star hotel nothing about it! Staff were not helpful , everything extra was costing u extra! Been to holiday inn for work and nothing was a problem!

I booked for a night for patner's birthday and i ask for room decoration before we can go they said thay will do it when i arrivd it was just a bollon nd one banner nd they charge me £9.95 i don't think so its worth it. Satff said we'll get a complimentary sweet but nothing turned up and next day i asked next staff said they didn't know anything but i liked hotel and rooms

Sharp decline. Used to cost £10 to park here per night under Mercure now it's run by a company called Sunday who charged 21 pounds a night for you to park your vehicle in their underground car park your vehicle which is frankly ridiculous. People were unhappy with the £10 before but 21 pounds daylight Robbery don't stay here this was one of my favourite hotels ever it's extremely unlikely that I will ever stay here now again. -----previous review - - - - - - - - Always a pleasure to stay here. The rooms were clean, but everything was very old. We had to change the room in the evening because the temperature didn't go above 16 degrees. The furniture in the bar area was also very worn out. Everything here needs to be renewed and renovated.

Beds & pillows are not very good

Stayed for one night for business purposes and found the hotel to be good for my needs. Friendly staff and a clean spacious room on the 8th floor. Checking in and out was quick and easy. Would stay here again. Just one thing as other reviewers have mentioned the windows could do with a clean but it's a minor point.

When I arrived in Cardiff, Laura at the hotel reception was the first person I spoke to. She was very helpful, kind and friendly. I hadn’t been to Cardiff for a long time and it was nice that the first person I spoke to was so friendly. I really loved the room It was very spacious clean and had all the things I needed. My only regret is that I was only staying one night and couldn’t enjoy it more. I went to the bar in the evening, the decor is really nice and the staff were polite. I just sat there and did some work. It was a very nice atmosphere. In the morning, I went to the gym. The gym is very well equipped for a hotel gym. There is also a pool and I think a sauna, unfortunately they weren’t open that day but I definitely want to use them if I managed to visit again. In the morning, I Had breakfast there was a good selection of things to eat and everything tasted nice. I’d really recommend anyone who is visiting Cardiff and looking for a hotel to stay at this one.

I booked this hotel for a weekend to celebrate my boyfriends birthday. From the moment of booking, the communication was brilliant. I requested some balloons in the room and they got back to me through booking.com's messaging service and gave me the option to also have a cake waiting for us in the room! I maybe would have expected a tiny bit more than 2 helium balloons, a banner on the bed and a cake for £20 but oh well. Lovely views and immaculately clean! Beautifully decorated bar too, and good breakfast.

Spa experience given as a gift, nice relaxing atmosphere at Spa. Hotel room was comfortable and spacious. Dining was good value for portion size and taste. Special mention to Rochelle who did an excellent and relaxing hand recovery spa treatment. Need to take own flip flops to Spa for pool area, changing rooms!

I went to inquire about a membership here; and the staff member I spoke to (Mahalia) was so kind and informative! She made sure I was aware of all the facilities that come with my membership, and helped me to decide which one was best for me. Definitely recommend!

I attending a Christmas party at this hotel. It was terrible. The food was cold, un cooked and dry. The presentation messy and not what you would expect in a 4star hotel. It's situated just outside the city centre with minimal.parking facilities, in a not particularly nice area of Cardiff. The doormen were rude and more concerned about people smoking/vaping on the terrace, telling them to get onto the pavement than the general public who were peeing at the bottom of the steps and breaking into the cigarette bin on the side. I didn't feel safe at all. I wouldn't recommend or return

Sam is such a fantastic staff! He really sorted our day at the event and was super kind to everyone. Not only did he mix up some great drinks, but he also went out of his way to help us with anything we needed. Whether it was finding a spot to sit or just making sure everything was good, he was always there with a smile. His positive energy definitely made the whole experience way more enjoyable. Even in the big crowd, he was working so well. Huge shout out to Sam!

Stayed in Cardiff Holland house overnight whilst attending my works Christmas party which was also held there. The party was fabulous and the food, dj, atmosphere was great. The room was lovely, bed especially comfortable. All the staff were really helpful and lovely. Location great to as short walk into the city centre. I would defibately recommend anyone to stay there.

At reception Laura helped me in checking in and she was so professional. During my stay i had my dinner every night at the Mercure restaurant and Babina, Alpi and Lincano were very friendly. The service as well as the good was amazing I definitely recommend yo everyone. I will be visiting this place again whenever i can.

Stayed during a business trip. Service was excellent, and so was breakfast. The room looked a bit dated and needed a bit of TLC. It was clean, though!

Lovely hotel. Extremely clean everywhere. We were upgraded to a prestige room which was a nice bonus. Could not fault anything. Room was lovely. Reception staff all polite. We will return when staying in Cardiff again.

staying a couple of nights here. I booked a twin room, it’s absolutely wonderful and very clean, more spacious than I expected. Service from all the staff is great and seems like nothing is too much to ask! they really go out of their way to make you feel welcome and relaxed. Our first night was great and it’s very very warm despite being winter, had to turn the heating down a fair bit and the room cooled quickly. Had lunch at the bar restaurant and I would highly recommend the soup. Only £7. I think that’s a very fair price in a hotel as well, you get a lot of it and rolls too and it tastes great. I wouldn’t look further for another hotel in Cardiff. Only a short walk from the town as well, but not directly in the town, so it’s very peaceful at night which is ideal if like myself you’re used to living in a rural area. The spa facilities are very clean and again staff in there were superb for service.

The reception and bar staff were not as welcoming or efficient as expected which was the only negative. The breakfast staff were great. The rooms were huge, the location is great.

Room on 11th floor very tired and not very clean, cracked windows, leaking seal on shower resulting in soaking floor. Room was cold, two plug in radiators in room which worked intermittently, so obviously a problem. Bed configuration wasn’t changed as requested, had to wait after 11pm for this to be changed, messaged about lack of towels - no response. Great views from room, breakfast ok not amazing, good location. Staff on reception didn’t even ask if we enjoyed our stay or whether everything was ok. Only reason this is 4 star is the spa facilities otherwise I would rate a 3* at best.

Have to pay extra to use pool extortionate amount and had a group of men taking photos of my chest when in hot tub, when I complained no-one seemed bothered

On arrival staff were rude and unhelpful, seemed a purposefully unapproachable attitude. Carpark was full, which normally I wouldn't mark them down for as it happens, but their "full" sign wasn't on, and plenty of bays full of rubbish or "reserved" I imagine for the staff. When questioning the parking at reception was just verbally told they were full with little attempt of a solution. One half of lifts out of order, again it happens and a note about "improvements". The functioning lifts are tired, overused, and had the alarm light flashing every time we used it. The room stank of paint, ventilation was extremely loud, mattress was lumpy, pillows tiny in comparison to the bed, TV was older than me, and signal meant most channels unusable, shower door leaked into bathroom, shower on full warmth and power was tepid, only one big towl provided for two of us, and the small towl was covered in what looked like makeup or dirt, plus so unapproachable staff meant I didn't fancy making the 14 floor trip in the broken elevator to be met with a rude interchange about dirty towls, stains on carpet, on the walls, on the windows, slightly broken fixtures. Just generally one of the worst hotels I've ever had the displeasure of staying at. Ironically, everyone I spoke to out in Cardiff when asked here I was staying, and mentioned the hotel they suggested that everyone stays there once... and only once. Renowned for the wrong reasons. If you're looking for a romantic stay, enticed by the spa etc, please go anywhere else.

Great views over the city centre from our room and amazing spa

The room was good, bigger than typically found and was dog friendly (for a price of £25). Parking was OK - very tight spaces and we squeezed through in with a roof box. Parking was £21. Swimming was extra. Breakfast also extra - £16 and really not worth it. I judge breakfast by sausage quality and these were the largely bread variety. Not Richmonds level, but you get the idea. The hotel location allows you to walk to other parts of the city - there wasn’t anything much on the doorstep though.

I come here all the time for Spa day, always amazing experience. The team are always lovely and the place is sparkling clean, me and my girls love the sauna and the jacuzzi especially!! Can’t wait to come back again

Hi I have visit on Monday for spa day. I had lovely introduction in leisure department feel really welcoming. Woman lockers where nice and clean smeld lovery in there cleaner Marie has done good job.Pool was clean i have no complaints

Best hotel stay ever! We stayed for two nights for a birthday and it was a lovely stay, everything was perfect. Our room was huge, very clean and had the best view from our window. The view from our room was perfect as we were on floor 11, looking out onto Cardiff Bay. I paid extra for birthday balloons, banners and a cake and it was perfect, made our stay extra special. I highly reccomend this hotel due to their friendly staff, perfect location (8 minute walk from Cardiff City Centre) and amazing views. Thank you! x :)

I stayed at the Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel while visiting Cardiff for a work trip. I made a group booking as there were several of us needing accommodation. The following comments are based on my own experience rather than the overall group. I was really impressed with the communication and assistance throughout the booking process. The hotel staff were very welcoming, and my room was very spacious and comfortable. I was pleasantly surprised to find my bathroom had a bath and a shower! I was slightly disappointed with my evening meal as I felt that what was served didn't quite meet the description on the menu; however it was well cooked and served promptly. I would definitely stay here again but would probably order something different off the restaurant menu.

My spa treatment was best ever, I want to book again. Staff kind very attentive and caring. I like that I get coffee and a room to relax in after my spa therapy, pool great and love sauna. Thank u mercure

Visited the spa for a spa day (not an overnight stay) always lovely, the spa area is relaxing and quiet, free hot drinks provided with the upper spa facilities. Sauna, steam room, hot tub and pool downstairs.

Pia, the girl who works as a bartender, is highly attentive and courteous.She seems to be pleased with what she is doing. Great service. The only thing I feel they need to work on is fixing the second elevator as soon as possible. Apart from that everything was good. Recommended 💯

I recently stayed at the Cardiff Mercure Holland House and Spa. The service was amazing and im very thankful to Laura for being very helpful and knowledgeable. Definitely discovered a restaurant i will be coming back to, Thank u! All the staff were really nice and always smiled when I passed by. Restaurant staff also greeted me really nicely and helped with every small enquiry i had. However, there were a couple of issues. The lifts were broken, and the air conditioning didn't work well, which made the room way too warm for my liking. Because of the AC problem, I probably wouldn't stay here again which is a shame. Overall, if the AC and lifts were fixed, it would be a great place to stay especially with such nice staff in reception and restaurant.

Visited the hotel, and was served by very welcoming and friendly ladies in the restaurant . The place is very clean and a beautiful lobby.

The rooms were surprisingly spacious with loads of natural light. The bar and restaurant area had been well designed to accomodate work, rest and play. I enjoyed the 18m pool, warm jacuzzi and steam and sauna. Service in the bar and restaurant was quick and friendly. Notable mentions were Brenda and Sayani often on thr breakfast service, Levi often on the late night service and Carl the fab breakfast chef. Thanks for such a great stay. I would certainly book here again!

Not too bad a hotel, really dated though and no free parking if you're a guest. It is well located and within walking distance to night life

Waited 10-min to check in. 2 out of 4 lifts not working. Air con in room not working properly. There was a fan and portable air con unit in the room but they didn't help much. Big room but felt dated and tired.

Fantastic staff Laura on reception is amazing very helpful with me an my baby everytime I go swimming an use facilities and matthew from leisure is phenomenal very kind to my kids they love him Harry is amazing too just after a 10 hour shift its not fair an feasible to clean the whole facilities on his own the pool cover for example I watched him struggle tonight putting it on alone he did laundry an cleaned changing rooms he is kind helpful just needs more staff to help in evenings 😀 I love mercure used it for 3 an half years my son has membership uses gym had pt with matt managers are friendly apart from one who was rude ro me but overall staff are amazing ,facilities need more staff an update steam room ,an pool ,but understand that takes time, prices have increased, an facilities are declining a bit since changes were made .we miss gemma also but thanks for making it fab for my teenager an my baby ,appreciate u guys Harry u are a star 🌟 🤩 😀

The heating did not work in the first room, and we moved to another one, almost at midnight, and it did not work either.... the hotel has a good appearance but it is old and many things are not working.

Our stay was luxury and fabulous, the pool, sauna and steam room was exceptional. We had an issue with the pay per time for pool, but this was resolved by abdul, he was respectful and understanding. Great customer service would recommend!! 100 %

Had a bad experience previously but friends of mine chose this hotel for a Cardiff re visit and paid for me so I came back with them We were scattered around floors despite requesting same floor rooms we were told it was not possible as it was busy, later my friend who was chatting to a staff person was told it was quiet and only half booked The room carpet was dirty and stained the windows were really filthy the shower didn't drain very fast the linen was in the walkways until late the leisure facilities are now chargeable and it's per visit not per stay and some of the facilities did not even work Breakfast items were missing and needed to be requested we were told to come earlier as it was close to end of service All in all another bad experience however the spa treatments were fantastic the team were great up there - best bit of the hotel My friend complained on my behalf as some others also had issues - awaiting a reply from management (apparently) will update this review if they respond .........
