Merchant’s Halesowen in Dudley

Went in as they advertise a gluten free menu. The chip shop it's self is clean and busy. The service and the food is not so good unfortunately. We placed our order and waited patiently, my husband asked a girl who was dealing with mostly the cooking about the sausage to be answered quite rudely. She started throwing the food from the fryer into the heater . We waited over 20 minutes as the sausage was done with no batter and the chicken bites wasn't put in the fryer! To be honest the young lad working in there is the only good thing about it. We got home and the gluten sausage was undercooked and the bites were over cooked . The none gluten food wasn't great either the battered sausage was like rubber and chips were cold. The girls attitude quite frankly is not acceptable it's left my husband feeling quite disheartened as he's new to gluten free and this is not great . £18.50 what a waste of money

Reasonable quality food and prices. Small and large meal options to suit appetite.

Asked for a regular portion of chips and they gave me a small portion.

Got to be honest, the beef burgers are the best I've tried from a chippy ever and actually look and taste much better than I've ever experienced before, and the chips are perfect too, not really greasy or dry either. Haven't explored the menu any further to date as I've only recently discovered this place and it's not just around the corner unfortunately, but I have to say that won't go anywhere else if I can help it, all of the staff are friendly and polite and the shop is well maintained, looking forward to my next visit in the near future 👍🏻

Really disappointed at this place today just paid £13 for fish and chips and got a nice piece of fish with a handful of chips it's ridiculous for that price I counted 20 chips see below

Wasn't the best to be honest. £25 for 2 large cod meals and with both we had some very undercooked chips. The fish were cooked lovely but the batters weren't great. I'm no expert but it was too thick in many places and on the underside it was solid/burnt.

Excellent customer service, staff are very friendly, food quality is outstanding and always fresh highly recommended.

Not many tables, a bit unclear whether it’s the waiter coming and taking orders or whether you’re supposed to come to them and order food. Food was mid at best, nice gravy, chips were ok, fish was a bit tasteless maybe just because I had cod. Not impressive but not bad either. Food was served in about 10-20 mins since ordering. I don’t think I would come back again.

Being gluten free there isn’t many, if at all any fish and chip shops that serve gluten free in Birmingham. Wonderful food, you can’t tell it’s gluten free and there’s a list of items you can get, you aren’t restricted. The staff are wonderful too. I’d recommend 😁

Price of food higher than advertised on their poster and tend to increase every time I have visited. Ordered kebab in pitta and bag of chips. The chips were ok but the kebab was cut a centimetre thick as if a child had cut it using a dinner knife. Have decided to not return again and can’t see this chippy continuing to trade if this continues.

Disappointing how poor this place has deteriorated. Absolutely lovely when first opened but seems to have lost their way. Past 3 experiences have seen a £1-2 price increase, smaller portions & tasteless chips. Closes at 8.30pm but god forbid turning up at 7.30pm, nothing hardly left every time! Hope things change and get back to how they were.

Excellent food and service defenate 10/19

Just ordered a mixed gyros meal. They had none of the Greek sauces to accompany it. They also only had one of the meats available. I requested mayo and hot chilli instead. Upon getting it home the gyros was very disappointing. It was less of a gyros and more a mixed kebab meat with half a pitta dropped on top. I was given the wrong sauces as well. Whilst eating it I found a peice of plastic in the meat. It cost me £9. Will not be going back

Asked for chicken burger and they had none so got a beef burger instead, the lady gave me 5% discount ( she never had to) staff are so friendly and food is amazing

Disgusting kebab, either burnt or with pieces 1 - 2 inches thick, its as if a child got a hacksaw and decided that will do, chips were average, service was good, however quailty is no where near parkes who were the previous owners.

Wasted all my time coming from dudley only to be told their was nothing left at half 6. it's all a scam to get customers in but they should have prepared more stock.

Half the menu is never available. If you want anything other than fish & chips it’s not the place to go! Much better chip shops in the area.

This has been our chippy for a while now ,whenever I've gone in in the past it's usually lunchtime and the man will ask for your order and then cook it freshly and it is always lovely but today I went in at 4.30pm friday 24th May and the food was already cooked and it was awful, dreadful, all the food must have been cooked an hour or so ago ,the chips where hard and dry and the fish was no better the batter was solid and so was the fish ,the donor meat was dry and rubbery disgusting the lot of it, there was 3 woman there ,no sign of the man that usually cooks the food ,he probably cooked it all at 2pm and then left ,next time if the food in already in the heater I will turn round and walk out

Chip ship was not busy, place was clean, so 4* for atmosphere. Man serving really pleasant. However chips absolutely discusting firstly £4.20 for a large bag, fine accept that, however if they were edable. Saturday daytime, these chips were definitely from the night before, solid, dry you couldn't even find any potatoe in them. Won't be wasting my money again. This was the only chip shop open in the area, I'd wait until the others opened

Poor meal and experience last night. Had to wait 30 mins to be served, not sure why as queue wasn't long (I think they were focussing on online orders?), to then receive cold chips, rubbery fish with excessive under cooked batter, watery peas. I will not be returning, a pity as I used to enjoy the food here.

Very poor Fish and chips , mostly batter and a few hardly warm chips, so if you want a dogs dinner this is the place for you. Will not be returning

I'd heard lots of people say how good Merchants are for fish and chips, so thought I would give them a go. Very clean shop, really helpful staff, I asked for a longer, thinner piece of cod and it was no problem at all. All food was cooked really well, the fish was terrific, the chips lovely and fresh. And not a bad price either. Will definitely use again.

So disappointed. I was told the meat is halal, I asked if the chips are fried in non meat oil I was told everything is fried together including pork products so it’s not suitable for people who eat halal or who are vege/vegan. I told the owner he is misleading people and giving the wrong information he did not seem bothered about it but there was a young guy who served me he apologised as I left. The owner needs to stop misleading people just be honest when someone asks you a question as people have preferences and different dietary needs

My food was very nice and l was served promptly but the staff at the till seemed preoccupied with their own chatter and when l presented my card for payment the assistant walked away without confirming that the payment had gone through and although l asked if it had gone through (l couldn't see the screen) she didn't answere

Ordered Through just eat Halesowen. Fish was very dry and chewy. Chips were not very warm and very few of them. Disappointed as i had heard good things. Will not use agsin.

I bought a few regular fish and chip meals: the cod was predominantly batter with a very small slither of fish, that was rubbery and overcooked; the chips portion was best described as scanty, half of which was the oily off-cuts of potatoes. I thought it was a one off, however all box meals were similar in terms of poor quality and quantity. Nevertheless, the service and packaging of the food was decent. Additionally, the price was not in keeping with the inadequate standard of food, in comparison to other fish and chip shops in the area. This has occurred on more than one occasion. Therefore, I will not be returning as a customer nor recommend this to others, unless this is improved.

Great freshly cooked food. Lightly battered cod is amazing with 3 sizes available. Chips are great and you don't get the burnt reused taste off the oil. New peri chicken and hot chicken are up there with nandos. Plenty of options on kebabs but there is always a queue with how popular it is which is dealt with by the large number of staff. Highly recommend

This was our first time visiting Merchants. I placed my order and it was cooked fresh and we ate it while it was hot we enjoyed every little bit and it was great we are planning our next visit

I used Merchants on a regular basis, but have noticed my orders being incorrect recently, which I put down to new staff, however I don't think this is the case any more. I have had items missing, not being given my change til asked and when asked not to put certain salad items on the gyros due to food intolerance, completely ignored. This has happened on numerous occasions now which means the food has to be thrown away(£7 a time very costly) or take them off and risk being ill. This is basic food safety and hygiene. They slso made fun of my daughter when she asked tellingly her she couldn't pick and choose and to give her double. So anyone with more serious intolerance allergy lease be aware as the staff really don't care for your health. Won't be using again

I went in at lunchtime they barely had any food cooked I wanted battered sausage but had to have a plain one, I didn’t think there were many chips with my meal which cost £5.50 I ordered a drink in addition to this which I paid an extra 1.20 for but they forgot to give me this. Chips were undercooked

This place has consistently excelled as one of the best fish & chips in the Midlands - we love our every other Friday afternoon fish and chips and not once have we been let down. The service is great and friendly but now I am feeling hungry and it's only Wednesday! Please check this place out!!

This place is appalling ordered online for a collection and told a time to Collect. Went into the shop waiting 10 minutes before anyone of the 4 young staff members chatting or arguing with one another decided to ask if I’ve been served. Told the young girl my name and she said okay. My brother then came out the car after a further 10 minutes to ask again and the girl looked at him blank with attitude and said no I have no order for that name! And then a few seconds later said oh yes we’re going to work on that order now. 30 minutes after standing in the shop. Numerous orders being done wrong whilst in there and staff members not listening to customers. You expect a little wait and a nice welcome and attentiveness would go along way but staff saying I’m over worked with arsey attitudes won’t retain business. I can safely say due to the time being taken to make all the order and then leaving the remaining items of my order on top of the counter it was lovely and soggy and cold once got home. I will never use this chippy again and if you employ kids to run your business more fall you.

Battered chips were the best I’ve ever tasted and the Halloumi Pieces were very good Fab food, only downfall is being Veggie would like to see at least a Cheese Pasty on the menu

Absolutely amazing chip shop! Moved to the area a couple of years again and only recently tried Merchants, and I’m very impressed! The chicken gyros meat is fantastic and so is the fish! Amazing customer service and so friendly. Keep up the great work.

We have individual fish & chips every Saturday night, but not too fussed about the extra peas etc. Last time my husband collected our meal, he was told to order 2 small fish & a large chips, as it would be cheaper. He ordered tonight & we were bitterly disappointed! Chips were liuke warm & mushy & the fish was far smaller than usual! Not only that we had to plate the food, which we don't normally have to do! The worst meal we have had from Merchants, I just hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Not only do they have a whole menu to cater for gluten-free, but the best fish and chips I have had in a while! Not to mention very welcoming and friendly staff. Definitely my new fave chip shop 🙂

Good service. Disappointed with the food as I got charged full price for two Kebabs with pitta and to come home and find out I got a tray of meat with salad for £16 which is poor value for money. I don’t recommend this chippy and I wouldn’t give this food to my pet… It was so greasy and the meat didn’t look right and taste right. Bring back Parkes and at least Parkes knew what a Kebab was. I will not be returning to this chippy as think portion is poor value for money and the food is underrated and I honestly don’t know how you’ve managed to get good reviews.. food is rubbish.

I have ceoliac disease and the staff told me the curry sauce was gluten free I had it with fish and chips didn't feel very well after a few hours didn't think nothing of it because they said it was gluten free went in today asked for gluten free fish and chips and curry sauce they said the curry sauce is not gluten free and never has been the portion size has gone really small the fish was like a fish finger and very small amount of chips sorry won't be trusting this place for gluten free again

This was my first time trying this place out. I looked at the website and menu beforehand to check details and prices and decide what to order. Luckily I managed to find a close parking spot entered the shop and placed my order almost immediately. The price I was charged was not the same as on the website though, so I queried it and got it reduced. Apparently the staff couldn't find the meal price for 1 of the items so charged individual items price. There was no problem doing this, but I'm glad I queried it. I still paid 30p more, but I wasn't going to cause a fuss over a few pence. The staff seemed cheerful and I only waited about five minutes for my order to be completed. The food was tasty, plenty of chips, cooked just right. My battered cod was just the regular size, a bit small for me, but very nice. The batter on the cod wasn't very crisp, but my wife's battered roe was crispy. I'm not too sure whether or not I'll go back just yet though as it's not actually local for me. I would recommend that people should try out this place.

We have eaten at the Bewdley branch, but not from here before. They ran a half price special for the Coronation Saturday and we thought we'd take advantage. Very glad we did, all freshly fried, crispy batter, lovely fresh tasty chips without blemishes and mushy peas. The homemade tartar sauce and lemon wedge accompaniment went down a treat. Thank you, we'll be back soon.

Disappointed with fish and chips as only luke warm.We have visited the shop before and was not impressed but thought we would try it again. I agree with other reviews not as good as previous shop - Parkes which we used regularly. Looks like we will have to look for another local chip shop.

Never had a bad meal since they took over from parkes. Can honestly say this is one of the best chip shops in the midlands. Very friendly staff and management are very customer oriented. Highly recommend 5 stars all the way. Keep up the outstanding work guys. 👌
