What a lovely little bakery. We popped in on our way past and was pleasantly surprised. We picked up some lunch and snacks for the kids. So much to choose from and all freshly baked on site. Will definitely be visiting again.

We decided to stop by after noticing their sign and were intrigued by what they offered. We ordered a coffee, a flapjack, and a lemon meringue tart. The bakery has a charming setup with fresh bread and pastries baked right in the same room. There's also a case for cold items, like the meringue tart, positioned near the register. The cafe features both indoor seating and outdoor picnic tables. The meringue tart was visually impressive with its height and texture. However, I found it and the flapjack to be excessively sweet for my taste. On the plus side, all the bread and pastries are homemade. The staff member at the register was friendly and accommodating, even though she seemed quite busy. While I enjoyed watching the bakers at work, the heavy use of sugar would prevent me from returning, as it’s a matter of personal preference.

Got suckered in by the past good reviews to divert our way here whilst on a bike ride for some lunch. Complete waste of time. The two young dolls at the front have never heard of customer service and were borderline outright rude to us. The sandwiches were bland and store bought but overpriced for what they were worth. They were closing up shop at 3pm and said they were no longer service food when they don’t close till 4pm. Should’ve sensed something was off with the bakery when we found the place empty. Waste of time and money. If you want a sandwich and coke just drive past this place and go straight to tescos because you’ll get better quality, better customer service and it’ll be cheaper.

Such a shame….have had so many breakfasts here and thoroughly enjoyed them though my last visit was terrible. Food was cold, poached eggs were overcooked and some of food items were missing. The staff were very friendly and accommodating but that doesn’t make up for the breakfast being so awful. Very disappointing.

My friend was reassured as she has a few allergy’s and she was surprised they could cater for her which is amazing that she didn’t miss out like she does at most bakery’s. The presentation of the food on display is amazing very tempting to buy more cakes 🫨 I recommend them for their food it’s amazing!

Our first time eating inside, and our last. As other reviewers have noted, virtually all the empty tables were covered with the previous diner's plates and crumbs. The food preparation area looked filthy, the corridors dirty and unloved. A place that used to be a fantastic cafe to visit, is now virtually unrecognisable. A shame

Shocking. Bad signage on where to order food, sat at the table for ages until we realised we had to order elsewhere, despite two members of staff (only staff in this area) having their break at the same time and neither of them acknowledged us. Dirty tables covered in used plates plates etc. Tables wonky, drinks kept spilling. Grim and dirty experience. Staff when finally back on duty were washing up next to tables, taps running, banging of dishes whilst trying to eat. Another customer told he couldn't sit at a clean table, directed to a dirty one. The same unavailable table then suddenly became available for a staff members friend. Not a pleasant experience, will not be coming again. Truckers cafes have been a better experience.

The café is shockingly bad - in fact doubly so, when you consider how good it was a few years ago. It used to be a real treat visit. After ordering food in the bakery, I went through to the café, which was poorly lit, poorly heated and felt completely unhygienic - dirty crockery & cutlery stacked up on most of the tables. All surfaces (floors, tables, walls) appeared grimy. The washing up area is clearly visible & was surrounded by dirty crockery. Two members of staff were sitting at separate tables having their own food, and their only interaction with me was to say: “You can’t sit there, it’s reserved for afternoon tea”, when I went to sit down at the one table laid out with clean plates & cutlery (it was 11:30am). They indicated to use the tables with dirty plates, making no offer to clear them away. It is staffed by young, inexperienced, and sadly, barely competent, individuals, who might just do a better job, if given some leadership & guidance. It had the feeling of a secondary school, where the 14 year olds have been given the task of running the canteen for an afternoon, without having been given instructions. And the breakfast?: small, of poor quality ingredients and vastly overpriced (£13-95 for cooked breakfast, which I think would be reasonable for decent quality). It goes without saying that my knife and fork were dirty and no salt & pepper or sauces were available. This used to be one of my favourite brunch venues - I won’t be coming back ever again ☹️

I believe this is under new ownership. I was really taken by the warmth and kindness of the staff although there weren’t many. However, this can’t make up for the filth. The tables in the restaurant were filthy, the cutlery was dirty and the bathroom didn’t look like it had been cleaned all year. It was disgusting. They couldn’t even be bothered to put the new roll of hand towels in the holder. The food wasn’t all that either. Cold toast which was both burnt and untoasted, cheap sausages and hard poached eggs. The bacon was tasty but cold. There is also no heating in the restaurant apart from some oil heaters that were switched off. We were going to buy something from the bakery but was put off by the uncleanliness everywhere else. This has the potential to be a great tearoom but not with the lack of leadership of the current owners. Tiptree tearooms here we come.

Awful mothers day tea, was told only 2 people were expected on the booking yet the sheet of paper infront of us said 3 very clearly. We'd checked this booking twice before we went too! So they pushed two tables together into a walkway that then were wobbly so I had to move them myself! Not to mention they then spent the whole time walking into the back of my sister. Hot drinks were cold and no refillable drinks were offered yet came as the package. Very disappointed and wish I hadn't paid so much!!!

I came here for the Mother’s Day afternoon tea and all I can say is it was very disappointing! When I booked I wasn’t given a date which caused much confusion because the website stated the Mother’s Day afternoon tea was on the 25th and 26th of march (the weekend after Mother’s Day). Luckily I called 2 days before to check the date which was confirmed to be the 18th, which was the day before Mother’s Day. On both phone calls I confirmed that there would be 3 participants and when we arrived on the day we were told it was only booked for 2 people. We could see the booking sheet on the desk which clearly stated 3 people and two tables had to be pulled together for us. The tables were in the middle of the walkway and we were bumped into and knocked all the way through our afternoon tea. The tables were wobbly and nearly spilled our drinks several times. The website also boasted unlimited tea, coffee and Prosecco for which we received 1 coffee each (barely warmer than room temperature) and 1 pot of tea and we also were only offered 1 glass of Prosecco each. Overall we were very disappointed and won’t be booking again. I can’t fault the food it was delicious, but it was let down by disorganisation and a lacklustre customer service.

Was in the area and was thinking of somewhere nice to eat, as it was 1pm we thought we may have to wait for a seat. Has it happens we was the only ones there, that’s when the alarm bells started to ring. Two of us ordered a roasted pepper and hummus toastie as that was all they had for vegetarians because apparently they’d run out of the other options? When it finally arrived it was cold and without the hummus. We politely took both of them back and both the girls look at us blankly and offered nothing in return. This could be and has been a little gem in the past it’s now just a room with tables and no atmosphere. To be fair the bakery is still nice.

Oh dear..... the Cafe has changed both it's menu and level of customer service, and the Bakery is now lierally "hands-on". The Cafe used to have an interesting choice menu, now it's just Sandwiches/Toasties, Soup, Quiche, Salad or Jacket Potato. There is no longer staff on site to deal with any queries or extra requests, you now have to leave the Cafe and pay in the shop. Visits by staff are only to deliver food and drinks, which takes a very long time compared to the past. Just to reiterate, there are no staff in the eating area anymore - which is odd for a Cafe.. The Bakery is now open plan, help yourself with the bread on a stand for people to walk around. I normally get a loaf when visiting the Cafe but not anymore, who wants to eat anything breathed/sneezed/coughed upon by members of the public in these post-covid times. I regularly took my mum here as it WAS so nice, now we will go elsewhere; such a shame.

Whilst I understand that changes have apparently been made to satisfy previous customer complaints and suggestions, I am definitely NOT a lover of the new self serve bakery area. The last time I visited, before Christmas 2022 there was a very switched on young man, serving and bagging the loaves and rolls, quick as anything, from behind a counter where you were served 'in turn'. I have never been a lover at all of food such as loaves and patries being 'open' to the elements like this. Why fix something when it ain't broke?! The bakery was quite busy when I was there, with multiple kids jumping around rubbing their hands across the loaves and bumping into the bread and pastry display. Despite being 2nd in the queue, people coming into the bakery behind me were barging the other way round the central display and ultimately getting their products first and subsequently being served first at the till. The young girl who served me at the till point, with bacon rolls and pastries was incredibly 'vacant', and forgetful over just 3 items. I had to remind her twice of what I had ordered. She rang it up wrong at the till, missing items off, that I had to correct. She then did not verbally correct how much the items totalled, so I only new what I had paid when she gave me my change. She took the money first, then got the food ready, where in my opinion those handling cash, should not also be serving/making food with the same soiled hands/gloves. I would suggest having one person on the till and maybe making the coffees and taking payment, and leave the food servers to serve food. This would make the overall service far more efficient, and perhaps alleviate the bottleneck at the tills. The bacon roll was lukewarm at best, being kept warm by heat lamps, that never ever keep food hot enough. I had to microwave the bacon when I got home. The sausages from the Churchgate sausage shop are always amazing, and I was served by a very efficient young lady. In and out in 2 minutes!

I took my sister in law here for lunch yesterday, and was really disappointed to find the cafe no longer does waitress service or anywhere near the menu it used to offer. We had pasties and salad and the pasties were very stale tasting. This is so unlike how it used to be. The cafe used to be bustling yet while we were there (lunchtime) there were only 4 other people there and for quite a time, just the two of us. The tables were not laid out, the cafe had lost all of its ambience (it almost seemed to resemble a storeroom more) and really I couldn't imagine us ever going back there to eat. This was such a shame as it really was a wonderful breakfast/lunchtime venue and we have enjoyed visiting there many times. The staff that served us at the till were helpful and pleasant and the cakes were still excellent, but the savoury food we found quite poor and really, it was such a disappointment.

We was a large table and was advised to arrive 30 minutes early to set up a few decorations, on arrival we was greeted by a very grumpy lady who stated we were too early and the table wasn't ready. Once seated, the sandwiches were by no means fresh, the bread felt as though they had been prepared possibly the evening before as had started to go hard. The dribble of Prosecco that was provided was warm, not even a little chilled, just warm! Cakes were fresh and tasted nice. However you had to eat and drink quick as the what I can only assume is the owner kept taking away the plate stands and full glasses (dribble) or prosecco before they were finished.

We booked and visited Mayfields for afternoon tea, this is the first time we have visited for the tea. When booking it was mentioned that one of the party has a peanut allergy. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised at the completed separate afternoon tea made for them, the waitress went to great lengths to explain what everything was and ensured they were ok. The owner also came over to make sure all was well. The food was plentiful and amazing quality. This was a fantastic way to spend an afternoon.

Have lunched here many times before in the waitress serviced cafe as my mother lives nearby. Today however we found the cafe largely empty and cold and had to order our food from the counter in the shop (waitress service is no more) where they also sell produce and take out orders. I thought the £22.00 paid for a toastie, a roll and two coffees was high and was not offered my receipt. No cutlery was brought to the table with our order and that which I retrieved myself from a box on a nearby counter was not very clean plus there were no proper forks only dessert forks and only a limited supply of napkins. Will not be returning.

Visited for lunch today, would you think about asking the staff in the cafe to get some tips on customer relations from the very helpful lady in the bakery section. We waited at a table for service, finally going and asking how we order food. Bread nice but presentation very poor on large plate. Food in warmer looked dry and unappetising, soup had all gone. Bakery lady very knowledgeable with regard the breads and appeared happy unlike her fellow workers. Kept our coats on as cold.

We had afternoon tea at the Mayfield Bakery today. The tiny sandwiches, on various breads, were lovely. Scones with cream and jam, delicious. The cakes were scrummy and all made on the premises!

Hi. I hope this is taken as constructive. I visited the cafe last Sunday with my family. We ordered coffees and various rolls and sat in the cafe. I was very surprised you were happy to serve coffees in single use takeaway cups to people sitting on the premises. The assistant was utterly confused when I politely asked them to wash up the cups and reuse them. Your lack of awareness of the importance of recycling/reuse seems pretty stark compared with other cafes that outright ban single use items, even for takeaway items. I urge you to reconsider your approach. It makes a difference to how you’re viewed, hence the 1-star. I won’t be visiting again. Thanks

What a lovely day, Learnt such a lot and made some great breads. Nick and ELvin were brilliant at teaching and helping us and I will now prove my bread 3 times before baking. Thank you for our aprons and "proving" tea towels. Very delicious coffee on arrival, and lunch and great atmosphere. Such a fun day, thank you to all.

We used to love coming to the Mayfield bakery for breakfast or lunch and then buying cakes and bread to take home. Never again after today’s visit. Really didn’t fancy trying out the new and rather odd self service set up for lunch so we bought six assorted scones, four assorted eclairs and two Portuguese custard tarts. The sconce seemed stale, the eclairs were also stale, tasteless and quite frankly inedible. The Portuguese custard tarts were ok! Looks like you’ve made a lot of very silly changes.Sorry but we wont be recommending or be back the The Mayfield Bakery.

I attended the bakery basic bread making course today and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Nick is very engaging and put everyone at ease very quickly. We made some lovely breads and I learnt a lot of useful tips to help me improve my bread at home. We also learnt about the history of the family Baking business and enjoyed a beautiful lunch. Went home with a bag full of different breads that I made today. Would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone!

I visited mayfields with a friend after having been many many times before and telling her how amazing it was. HOWEVER, how wrong I would be! The ‘new self service’ it is literally take away coffee, cold left over food and a closed down sad looking cafe area. I am beyond disappointed this little gem and termed into a little mess. Rude staff that began to turn the lights off and clean around us! Yes you may have had to wait for a table or to be served BUT I would have rather that than this!

So upset that you do not do breakfasts anymore as I was going to bring my inlaws from Australia for a nice breakfast for my husbands birthday as it was one of the nicest in the area. The cafe set up that you have was clearly working it seems crazy that you should change this. I will not be doing the set menus it does not suit us and we always use to buy things after breakfast. sadly you have lost yet another customer.

Arrived on Saturday morning for breakfast and was told quite abruptly 'don't do fresh breakfast anymore' but you can order food from shop and bring through to sitting area. So accepted this, waiting 10 minutes for service then ordered 3 sausage baps, 2 coffees and bottle of water. This come to £24?? Sausages were sat under hot place and didn't taste freshly cooked - had better at Greggs, roll wasn't buttered and food wasn't great. Even coffee served in plastic takeaway cup. Have had numerous breakfast's at Mayfield and although pricey haven't complained as standard always been high. Today was poor at best..
