Great pub ,wonderful food ,friendly staff

MY wife and family have been quite afew times always been good food and great staff

Absolutely excellent time there!Will definitely be returning!Served by teresa who was wonderful and so helpful.The lady at the desk was also lovely and nothing was too much trouble. And a welcoming chatty chef serving at the carvery too!Food was absolutely delicious!!

Mushroom pie crust was rock hard mash was like packet mash wasn't best pie we had there when it come to our deserts they iced our with someone else's forgot my crumble did bring it without custard apple crumble wasn't as there wasn't any apples in there crumble didn't taste like crumble then they forgot the children's Sunday and strawberry ice-cream we ordered was vanilla children main meal.was Luke warm

No clear direction on ordering procedure. Only 1 staff member working bar - others were chatting behind the scenes - could here them. Ordered a carvery using the app. Went to carvery and waited to be served, could see staff in kitchen but no one on meats - had to take plate over to bar, ask lone staff member to call kitchen staff - poor girl. Food in carvery section drying out. A slither of dried out beef, un-carvable and left out. Nothing had been refreshed and the carvery looked very sad, indeed. Meanwhile staff continued to chat in kitchen. Poor girl on bar had to call. Eventually a staff member came out. I had turkey which seemed the only edible option. Gravy and condiments placed away from serving area on separate area - not great. I wanted condiments but couldn’t serve myself as there were no spoons in the serving area nor staff to ask. The carvery server quickly returned to chat in the kitchen. Felt a bit of a lemon with a plate whilst my food went cold. I thought a tumble weed might roll on through. Returned to table, and of course, cutlery hadn’t been replenished, so got up and took from another table. When drinks arrived, they’d got the order wrong and had to return. Quite a problem with staff and staff training at this place. No wonder was empty. Won’t return.

Staff.... excellent. Attentive and knowledgeable. Alcohol prices are the most expensive in the area by £1 a pint and for what? Nothing special with the venue and low quality food

I have been going to the margam Deer ,a gd few times , I have seen staff coming and going, , and they ones I got to know have left, shame they were very help full and friendly,, now, I called in on the 30.10.24 .and the staff are very help full one member NIAMH, was very help full , and the food was very good I recommend any one to give it a try , and judge it for your selfs , thank NIAMH for your help today ,

Waited over 45 minutes for our carvery meals, one was vegetarian, spinach tart chosen. Veg wasn’t the best or even close.

Absolutely awful no salad ,tills not working , carvery disgusting very little in turines, all dried what was there roast potatoes were like fried squares Tina tried her best felt sorry for her

Just had a regular carvery which costs £2 more on a Sunday for some reason? Food was OK but they are unbelievably miserly with the meats. I asked for a slice of each and they served me half a slice of each. This is by far the worst carvery I have ever been to for serving portions of meat. Won't be coming here again as there are far better carveries about!

Firstly we waited 10 minutes to be served at the carvery. We then found a hair in the red cabbage and the choice of food was really poor, also the food was extremely cold. We then had to wait for the condiments to be refilled. No one came to ask if our food was ok. This was our first visit here and was absolutely awful

Had carvery there today.gravy was like water .beef was like chewingum.food dry and tasteless.couldnt eat it

Been coming here for years for the small carvery. There must be budget cuts in place today - one slice of ham was split between 4 people (my quarter was mostly the fat), the beef and turkey was one mouthful each, not even a slice just crumbly bits. It's the first time ever I've left still hungry. And first time the Margam Deer has disappointed.

Sadly the meals have gone downhill We ordered fish and chips and the cheese burger and fries. The fish was so burnt and lack of batter on the fish plus the bun on the burger was so so stale and burger like rubber that we told the girl who placed our meals on the table that we could not eat our food How they could be brought out of the kitchen like that was beyond belief We asked for a full refund of £32 for the meals and drinks the member of staff attitude was she couldn't be bothered with our complaint no one from the kitchen was called out about the meals Sadly after going to the pub for many years it has gone downhill so bad that we would not recommend the food or return to what a good place to eat in the past..

The cavery food looked lovely and the vegetables were tasty, but the turkey was dry and the food was luke warm which needed to be piping hot and served on hot plates. I was very disappointed. Response was defensive when informed by genuine complaint. Was not confident that feedback would be taken seriously. Will not return, which is such a shame.

Is a really nice place, comfortable and spacious. There's a really nice beer garden outside, too. The TVs on the wall that draw your attention are always on the News channel, promoting doom and gloom could be better placed by programmes such as find it, fix it, flog it, hones under the hammer and bargain hunt.

Took my mother to sunday lunch here and was dissapointed with very poor quality food at the carvery. This was my second time here with same results so i doubt i'll ever return.

This venue has such a lovely atmosphere and everyone was super friendly and helpful. While we were there, we were informed that they were short staffed and that there was only 2 people front of house, however, this did not stop us being served promptly and with a smile. The food was brought out piping hot and was delicious! Will definitely be visiting again soon.

Great place, friendly staff... reasonable prices. The food wasnt the best, but its pretty decent. The food is just slapped across the counter whilst cutting for carvery, and the mashed potato is pretty thing, potentially powdered, but alright generally, with some small areas for kids to play.

Visited on the 23rd and had a brilliant experience. The staff were lovely and the food was great 10/10 will be going again

Short staffed, no fault of waitress , she was trying to do 5 jobs but all the tables were dirty, nobody cleaning waited ages to be served, really slow service.Foods ok but to attract business you need more staff to clean the place

Extremely shocked at the lack of attention from staff, upon entering we went to the bar, the greeting station had gone and were asked if we wanted to be seated or find seats ourselves. As the two ladies behind the bar seemed deep in conversation we chose to seat ourselves. My partner went up to order only to be told there were no Yorkshire puddings or pigs in blankets to be had with the carvery meal we wanted. On going up to the carvery, there was only ends of beef and gammon available, we both chose beef, vegetables were very sparse, garden peas, carrots, some mushed peppers, mashed potato and roast potatoes which were very pale, this resulted in my partner having just mash, roasts and beef. The gravy station was empty and I waited for the chef to finish his conversation with the bar staff before asking for more gravy, and we were then supplied with a small gravy boat of gravy. No one checked on us during our meal and we left within half an hour of arriving. I was very disappointed with my visit and cannot believe how quiet and empty it was as I have visited in the past and found it to be the total opposite. I would be very concerned about the future of this establishment if it were to continue in this manner.

Went Saturday at 5.30pm. All available tables about 15 of them had not been cleared and were really sticky. I asked the manageress for a cloth and she said they are supposed to be like that find another table which there was none , she just walked away rudely. Young staff were tidy but sadly no mixed grills , or eggs. Marstons always seem to cut corners. Very amateur sadly

the bar staff where lovely and the restaurant was very quiet however the tables where extremely sticky (your arms stuck to the table when you lifted them up) and we had to ask to be served at the carvery as the chef seemed to be doing everything. the food was ok, an average carvery. the cakes look incredible!

Table was sticky and cutlery grubby, no mixed grill available so my partner couldn’t eat anything, my sirloin steak was tasteless and tough ( which I took back ) only 2 bar staff available to take food orders on a busy Sunday lunchtime, and for some reason the staff found it exceptable to call me love and darling, first visit but never again… left and went to Mc Donald’s

Food was nice, missing a few things but staff were super polite about fixing any problems. Service from staff was great and they're very polite and friendly. Very nice place to eat

Even though the meat ran out for the carvery luke was very nice and changed it out for a hunters chicken and there was no burger buns so he asked if i would want a gluten free which i said yes too the food was lovely would defo be back again

Nice pint and decent carvery at fair prices

Finally a proper pub grab place. Went here yesterday was expecting it to be as good as it was 3 years ago. It was not carvery was a mess like a bomb had gone off. Tables were all dirty, there was food all over the floor and under tables. Staff were doing there best but clearly management is poor here. Never going back!

Absolutely beautiful carvery, good selection of meats and not too skimpy with them either 😀 friendly staff and a good atmosphere.

Booked a meal to celebrate our sons 36th Birthday, as my wife is Coeliac and has to have GF food which was ordered. 20 minutes later a waitress came over to tell us that the GF fryer that the chef uses to do the chips had gone down, so No Chips or Onion rings could be had. My wife was so disappointed! The alternative was a Jacket potato, so not to spoil our sons birthday she decided to have that, the potato was quite dry and the Rump steak that should have been cooked med to well done, was totally over cooked.. no one asked if we enjoyed our meal. Very disappointed customer.

We Just popped in when passing. We didn't have to book, so happy with the beautiful food. The staff were very kind and friendly. The kind lady who served us at the bar, was polite, friendly and very helpful. Will be going again. ☺️💕

My mother, sister, and I came for weekly Carvery. We were first left waiting for the server to arrive. Then, when the chef arrived, he could have had a nicer attitude. The carrot's Mediterranean veg,and I roast squash and sweet potato, had a very sour off taste. The mash potatoes had no flavour at all. I did, though, really appreciate the homemade horseradish sauce. We've been to The Margam Deer quite a few times. This has left us not wishing to come back.

Staff and Chef so friendly explained everything from what meat was on offers to the ingredients if you were vegan or veggie …. Carvery … omg the carvery where do I start!?!? From the Turkey to the Beef succulent and so tasty, the mash potatoes were a dream to eat, cauliflower cheese spot on creamy! The whole variety of veg was incredible but the main thing for me is the gravy! Omg it did not disappoint … I’m Going back next week lol..

OK, hear me out. This pub's main attraction is its so called carvery. They serve until 9pm yet when we walked in there yesterday (23/07/24) at 17:50 we were told they onloy had a small amount of meat left and some veg. Im not being funny but surely if your main dish is a CARVERY you would make sure you had enough of it to last until you stopped serving. I can understnad if you run out half hour before but 3 hours! Not really acceptable is it. Then there is the matter of the tables, I dont know what cleaning agnet you are using but ALL your tables are sticky. This place went down hill when Phil left and has never recovered.

Had Carvery I choose the Beef, but when he cut it, it was Pink OK had the usual Yorkshire pudding roast potatoes,peas, carrots ,Mash potato & gravy but when I went to cut couldn't because it was very hard it it was full of grisel & fat the only thing was nice was the roast potatoes,carrots,peas,mash potato & gravy dessert was nice but you couldnt eat the beef the rest yes but not that.I feel wherever they get the beef it was a let down very disappointing since the last time I was there that's why I give it 2 stars it would have been 1 star the rest saved it

We had what was left of the carvery on a Saturday afternoon. The food was good but not great due to the time we were there and it was not busy. Nice quite pub, good atmosphere tho and the staff were very good👍

Not happy with the food the staff wasn't any good we were waiting for our starters then they brought our mains out instead and I told them a few times we were waiting for our starters some of the food was over cooked the only thing I did enjoy was the dessert

The donuts were rock hard. Not enough staff on so being served at the bar was very slow (not the staffs fault). And the voucher for the winner of the quiz is only valid for 1 week. So we couldnt use our voucher. I have never experienced such a short date on any of the other marston pubs. The Cherry Laurel for example isnt even dated. This means we arent likely to come back even though we enjoy pint size trivia. As the quiz is only on fortnightly and the prize is only for one week it seems pointless

Popped in for lunch, it was nice and quiet. Staff were very pleasant. We enjoyed the experience

Had the carvery and unfortunately wasn't the best I've had, maybe I should have gone at a different time but that shouldn't really mater, meat was very dry but still edible, dessert was extremely nice, and the staff are very polite, maybe next time I'll just skip the carvery altogether

Food is always amazing. I always have the fish, cooked to perfection. We as a family and always enjoy. The service is great.

Welcome to the MARGAM DEER for carvery that was made hours, possibly days before! If your visiting after 5pm do not order the carvery. Yorkshire pudding is resembled prawn crackers and the stuffing could have been used for golfing. Meat was dehydrated and the wilted veg (just carrots and peas) looked solemn under the heat lighting. Best part of the offering was the horse radish. Nevertheless, 30% off voucher. Order from the menu if you would prefer a better dining experience.

Came here for food with my friends and had a great time. Food was hot and served quickly and a baby Guinness was amazing.

Boring, small menue. I just had the loaded fries but the loaded part was non existent.

The staff were lovely, really helpful and chatty and all smiling. First time we've been here, but will definitely be back, the carvery was delicious and cooked perfectly, I'd say a bit pricey for a large but you get what you pay for and the quality of the food was spot on so didn't mind paying a little over the odds...the restaurant was cool and airy, which was an added bonus

Luke warm carvery food for 3 at 1.30pm on a Saturday,i had a jacket and tuna mayo with no butter supplied ,asked for 2× butter portions as jacket was dry ,was given one saying last portion of butter in the building! But lovely service from the staff ,not going back ,shame,good location

Great place to take family and friends, They even got a children's area for them to play inside and out. The atmosphere is brilliant and the staff are so helpful would definitely recommend.

Carvery was colder than it is elsewhere. But taste was good.

I had previously been at the Margam deer and really enjoyed but on this occasion it was terrible, I should have complained and asked for my money back but had just recovered from being poorly. Nobody greeted us at the door as we arrived it was a lady with a laptop behind the bar, and then we had to wait while she was dealing with a complaint but there was another of member of staff free to greet or serve us but chose not to. So after waiting we finally got to confirm our booking and where told o sit where we like, we found a quiet table in the corner sat down and went through the menu before ordering in the meantime found that the table we had was really sticky it felt disgusting and unclean, we bared with it and I went up to order having to wait again while both staff members whom one I believed o be the manager who had the laptop with her at all times, the reason I had to wait was due to them pouring to glasses of coke for themselves. I ordered a cavary for myself and a larger with a dash of lime and a coke for my partner as there wasn't Fanta available for her, sat down and my drink had far too much lime in it I found it hard to drink. I waited for my partners order to come out first as I could just walk up to the canary with my ticket, wish I hadn't waited as I went up to the empty canary with my ticket waiting to be served it took so much time that I had to wave the bar lady down and then called the meat server he seemed in a rush to serve me and go back through to the kitchen, the food looked as if it should be reviewed and renewed from the hot plate and was right I took my plate back to the table in which my partner had nearly finished her meal, started to tuck in but couldn't cut my Yorkshire pudding it was that hard; the vegetables were undercooked apart from the cauliflower cheese which has a long life due to its moist cheesy nature my plate wasn't pleasant to say the least it was shocking to be honest and before that I had to hunt for napkins and cutlery as there was one set at the sticky table but they had food ingrained on them. I tried to eat my food as I was starving but the whole experience and the food was as bad as it could have got to be honest, in fairness the fresh burger and haloumi fries my partner had was fine and she ate it but as soon as she finished I left my food and drink pretty full and was glad to leave but felt like such a waste of money and time. If I had the energy to complain the list would have been so long where would I start and just wanted to leave that sticky table terrible meal service and over limed drink right there and get something from the supermarket for myself when home. This was a huge difference to the experience I've had on a number of occasions prior albeit over a year ago, I couldn't understand how it had gone that bad in that time period and it was generally quiet especially for a Saturday afternoon and now have come to learn why. I apologise for the long reply, I don't usually complain but felt compelled to do so on this occasion as it was terrible from start to end we originally were looking forward and discussing which dessert to have but unfortunately didn't get that far into the meal for the reasons I've expressed in this reply. Having been to the Margam Deer on several occasions we knew what we were going to experience. It was just the missus and I so we booked on a unday at 6pm knowing it would not be full of screaming children (them days are gone for us) and thankfully it wasn't full. Very polite bar staff who served us with a few minutes wait and we took our table, The food was plentiful and perfectly cooked with thick gravy, I love thick gravy. Now to the however, I love piping hot food and the carvery was nowhere near, some parts of the veg I'd go to say was cold. I understand it's difficult to keep food hot whilst not drying out but I'm afraid it wasn't hot. The carrots were warm but that was it, I was so hungry I ate the lot and didn't complain given the time was 6.30pm. So I have a suggestion, is it possible the staff could reheat my meal if I asked? I hope absolutely no objection to 1 minute in a microwave if it means having a hot meal. Apart from that I'd recommend the Margam Deer as the staff are always friendly and helpful.

I went to the margam deer today, the food was awful, chips dry and cold, the curry was chewy, I ordered a extra bowl of chips, which they tryed to say that because I ordered it with the curry, it goes on the plate as half, even though I paid extra for chips, after speaking to the lady, I did have them, It's awful you pay for food,which should never be enjoyable but it was disgusting I will never go there again

we both had the carvery my husband ordered large and myself medium but there was no difference in the side . The food could also have been hot as it was just warm . The dessert was over priced for the portion size

Had the Sunday dinner Cavery very poor ,gravey was thin and tastless not as good as the Toby Cavery .very disappointed

Found that the food was not much better than Witherspoon quality and think the food and drinks are seriously overpriced. Service could be better considering I've never seen it that full . But that is my personal opinion others may think it the best place.. but not me

The manager was very polite and helpful going carefully through the carpet options. She was patient then helpful with the WiFi.Then she came back to check we were oķ. The carvey was good value, rare these days. Perhaps plates could have been hotter, otherwise a very good experience.

Tasty food but a tad overpriced

We came as a family for my sister prom, there was 23 of us. We all had a great time and food was hot and delicious and served in quick manner for our party. We will be coming again. Thank you

Came in and staff were friendly. Notice on door to say what was unavailable as fryers were not working so limited availability but that was understandable. There was 5 of us in total 2 had carvery but when returning to table the beef was horrendous it was so tough you couldn't cut it or even bite into it. 1 other had a tuna melt baguette and the bread was burnt and didn't look very edible. 1 just had a portion of chips and bread and butter and another had cheese burger and chips. The 1 burger was ok but the other was very charred when looking closer. When staff came and asked was all ok and we explained about the meat and the burnt baguette and burger the only response was oh sorry shall I get you a slice of meat but as we had already eaten some of the veg and was put off we declined. There was no other offer of any other meals or replacement. Not a very enjoyable experience and tbh I have been to numerous Marston carverys usually the blaina wharf in Newport and have never had this experience or issues with them. Won't be returning to margam deer again. Back to the blaina wharf for myself

I ordered the carvery at approximately 1905 hrs and was not informed that should of finished ,I paid for my meal and then waited 10 minutes , once the chef came out there was an attitude as I requested some fresh meat as there was non so I put together a part meal due to what was left when I started to eat it it was cold , so I returned it back and then the chef had a different attitude that was not pleasant, I then ordered another meal at the bat and paid the difference , at no time was there a apology if the carvery closes then the bar staff should be informed and therefore poor presented cold food will not be left for the customer like my self All I want was a fresh hot meal and I was not given it , my second attempt of a meal was OK as when I changed again the fryer was broken for the chicken If there is a problem the chefs should not look at you as if they where going to beat yku for complaining All of the food was dry probably due to it being there a while

A very nice place but a bit disappointing tonight as the deep fat friars wasn't working so no fish or shellfish was available and it was what I went there for

Poor bar man was working alone on a Fri eve so run off his feet. Food gorgeous, very tasty mixed grill, super filling, not noisy & still couple of tables available at 6.30pm

The starters came after 40 minutes no drinks had to go to the bar to request them and them main food took an hour to arrive and it wasn't even very busy The excuses were they had to deal with two birthday parties So overall a very poor visit considering it cost 50 pound for two people

I took my grandmother here after we'd done some food shopping in the supermarket next door. I'd booked in advance through the website. The atmosphere is bubbly, and the décor is "cosy pub". Staff were friendly, and service was quick. The food is standard gastro-pub fare, and the prices are reasonable.

Super good, nice food, friendly staff, quick service and the cheesy garlic bread was amazing!
