I love this restaurant - charming atmosphere, amazing and authentic food. Sadly it hasn't been open for a while now, perhaps even since Covid in 2020. Does anyone have any news or an update? I'd love for this gem of a restaurant to open up again.

Tutto ottimo. Pagato in tutto, incluso del naan bread e acqua minerale, 21.50€.

Kings Road Hammersmith? High street Cricklewood? But Kilburn is a complete no no. Food was better at Edgware Road - maybe wife on holiday.

Visited here after I found out they had re-opened. It was great to see the owner again - I used to visit the old place very regularly when they were in Edgware Road many years ago. The interior is not as charming as the old place, and the menu is much smaller, some of the old classics have vanished, such as the twice cooked fish curry, and the old lunch deal no longer exists (used to be something like 6 pounds for starter, main and dessert). Location is a bit of a shame as it feels like a bit of a rough area. Food was tasty, although quite spicy (ask for mild if required), and fairly oily (although normal in Burma). Probably not as good as before, although I give enormous credit to the owner for keeping this restaurant running (they have been through a difficult situation) and allowing us to experience Burmese food in London!

This has been on my bucket list for a few years, so I was really excited to finally eat here. I researched online and decided the chicken khausay and lamb tamarind were the specialities along with tea leaf salad and spring rolls. So my expectations were very high after seeing the reviews. Unfortunately the food was only average, if not slightly below average. Shrimp Spring rolls- did not have much flavour, the filling was non descript... I've had better Spring rolls from standard Chinese takeaways , and much better from Thai and Vietnamese places. Tea leaf salad- I was expecting something refreshing, but it wasn't really a salad ( I was imagining mango and papaya style salads) it had almost no vegetables and was mainly roasted peanuts, dressed with very few strands of cucumber, we found it very rich and hard to eat. Chicken coconut noodle soup, I was really looking forward to this after seeing the photos, unfortunately it tasted similar to tinned coconut milk and noodles, it was not spicy nor aromatic but very coconutty. Tamarind lamb- This was quite flavoursome and taste like carribean goat curry almost. Went really well with boiled rice. But it wasn't cooked to order it so the meat whilst very tender tasted a little flat and like slow cooker stews. The portion was very small, it came in a small bowl like a thali size If you're looking for a low key home cooked exotic flavour you're better off going to Penang Satay in Turnpike Lane or Roti King in Euston. Where there's more kick and flavour in everything... I really wanted to like the meal but it just didn't tickle my tastebuds. The owner is very nice and I'm glad to try Burmese food at last, sadly not for me...

Mandalay was a recommendation from a friend and we went on a Saturday for dinner here. We had hah the Calabash, papaya and cucumber salad and veg sprig rolls for starters. Loved all of them especially Calabash which came with an excellent tamarind and ginger chutney. For the mains we had the chicken and veg khausey, lamb in tamarind and parathas. Loved the lamb and the khausey was worth trying as its the Burmese speciality. For dessert we had the tapioca and agar agar pudding(Burmese pudding) and Burmese tea which is tea in condensed milk. My picks would be Calabash, papaya and cucumber salad and lamb in tamarind. The owner was very helpful in recommending what to order so do ask him. Also, this restaurant is now at kilburn and not edgware road.

I was very happy to hear that the Mandalay had re-opened in the Kilburn area, a few minutes walk from the tube and overground station. The restaurant is much larger than its predecessor which can now accommodate for all the hungry customers! We opted for the mohinga and chicken khawsay dishes which were rich in flavour with the right amount of spice kick. To finish off, we both had the banana fritters which again, was enough in sweetness without tasting too sickly. The service and friendliness from the Ally family is always welcoming and a pleasure to see them time and time again. The other great things about this little gem is the non-London prices but the food is consistently mouthwatering. I would highly recommend this little find to anyone!

We invariably come here. After watching the cricket at Lords, twenty minutes walk away, we stop by for dinner on the way to Paddington, for the trip back to the West Country. It is important to book ahead if you want to be sure of a table. This place is very popular and fills up quickly for good reason. Read on.For a few years here was the only purveyor of this nations food and even now, one of only a half dozen or so restaurants from Burma (Myanmar) It really is a good find the Mandalay in Edgware Road. For those not familiar with Burmese cuisine, they draw their inspiration from surrounding countries, but roughly, if you think of a combination of Indian & Chinese, you won’t be far wrong and this should hit the right taste buds for most of us. Curries, rice or noodle dishes, salads and fried snacks are combined into innovative dishes with herbs and spices, hot, sweet or sour that will delight your palette. Also there is no shortage of original dishes for those who prefer vegetarian options. This summers day (June 2016) having watched England make a somewhat slow start against Sri Lanka on the first day of the Third Test, we stopped by to find the place redecorated, with high backed chairs and a more tastefully minimalist decor. There had been a revamp of the menu also, but our welcome, the food quality and presentation were as good as we remembered.Price wise, it’s a steal. You wouldn’t think you were in London at all just a hop-and-a-skip from pricey St John’s Wood. There are a lot of ethnic places to eat in Edgware Road, but the Mandalay is one of the most reasonably priced of many of them. Worth a visit - and a few repeat visits afterward.

I spent some time travelling in Myanmar recently and really craved some Burmese food, so when the opportunity arose to visit this restaurant, I jumped at the chance. It being a Tuesday the place was not crowded, even though it is very small and reserving a table seems like a good idea. I loved the tea leaf salad, the calabash fritters (with tasty relishes, the lime one being especially good) and the red lentil soup, all of which reminded me very much of the food I enjoyed around Mandalay city. The fish soup with rice vermicelli varies from region to region in Myanmar - this one was a version I'd not previously had, and quite a lot more delicate/less hearty than I'd expected, but fine, just different. The lentil rice and vegetable noodles were good, nice plain food; I was surprised by the aubergine and potato, which was drier than most dishes I'd encountered on my travels. The special Myanmar sweet (agar jelly and tapioca) was exquisite. The bill was modest by London standards and I felt we'd had good value. The staff were very accommodating, and topping up the water jug and bringing extra spoons and dishes so that my guests and I could all taste each other's food..A couple of things I'd have liked to show my guests but didn't find on the menu: garlic and chilli flake sauce; thinly sliced unripe mango relish; and (perhaps we missed it on the menu) some of the fabulous fresh vegetable curries I'd got used to and would love to experience again. My only slight grumble is that I kind-of expected a pot of green tea (or refills) rather than just one cup with a teabag. But these points are suggestions for the future, rather than criticisms. We had a lovely evening and will almost certainly come again if we get the chance.

E' l'unico ristorante birmano a Londra, ci sembra. We didn't know what to expect from Burmese food, but this was so delicious. We kept just remarking to each other how tasty it all was. From the samosas starter, to my king prawns in lemongrass/tomato sauce, my partner's chili chicken (with rice and parathas), and they kindly halved a veg dish, so we had a side of ginger/garlic spinach: it all was delicious. We finished it off with an odd-but-tasty dessert (including coconut milk, seaweed jelly and vermicelli!), and just felt really grateful for having found something new in London. And the price was good, at £50 for two, including a bottle of chilean cabernet sauvignon. They've also just done it up, so it may look better than before. This is a very very basic family run restaurant. So don't go if you are expecting fine dinning... and going to the toilet is an "interesting" experience. But the food is rather good indeed and interesting. The Tea Leaf Salad, the Vegetable Fritters and Lamb Curry were my favourites. I would recommend it and would love to go back.

This was my first time eating Burmese food, I went with a group of 6 people after work and we had lots of dishes to share. The food was delicious and the staff particularly friendly and helpful, it really felt like a family business. Potatoes and aubergines were especially delicious but all was great - i would highly recommend for a fun and unpretentious spread!

First of all, I'm a British born Burmese guy and I've eaten most Burmese dishes. My mum cooks all of the best Burmese dishes to perfection and yet I still come here occasionally on dates as the food is lovely and very traditional. The owner and family are also lovely people. The restaurant itself is very tired, dated and let's not talk about the toilets. But to be fair they were investing their money on a new more modern location closer to Paddington station, which they unfortunately found out too late that the council said they were not allowed to cook any food there! But if you are interested in teasing your tastebuds to some traditional Burmese food, then look no further. The low price, good portion sizes, value for money, excellent quality, service and lovely family make this place a must visit.

I saw the reviews and went to this place. As others have said the layout was basic, but I guess that is fine as they are trying the keep the costs down for the customers. The food was not bad I must say but not great either. The main dishes were decent but the samosas were not terribly exciting. I am not sure if there was enough choice of Burmese dishes or it is a mix of different cuisines. The price was OK but in a cafe type environment you can have decent filling food for significantly less. And the environment is that of a cafe rather than a restaurants. There were some loud arguments in the background were the lady who appeared to be the manager was berating the staff with no concern about our dining experience. If you are in a cafe you expect a friendly and helpful face behind the counter, if it is a restaurant you expect a proper dining experience. I am not sure I got either of those. This is the first time in my life when I have left an eatery without leaving a tip. Not sure if I would go again. And I cannot recommend unfortunately.

This is my second visit to this restaurant. The first i remember as memorable. We booked early. We were told - 'we had to have the table back by 9:00pm'. They are a small restaurant. So that seemed fair, they did not mind what time we turned up, if we came early that was fine as well. Some restaurant impose football match themes to their bookings ie 90 minutes. Not sure what happens if there is extra time for a foul.....We ordered Prawn crackers to start. They turned up and were oily. To be fair they had just been cooked. But no excuse. They came with sauces. All of which were watered down versions of the real thing. Main courses were not very hot, either hot by chilli standards or hot to the touch. The 'Crispy fish' was not crispy at all. it tasted like something the NHS would serve to an ill patient. Which is fine if you are not well, but crisp - no. Prawns with ginger - again - no spice, which may be the Burmese way ( I doubt it) , tepid, and lacking in flavour. Portion sizes are small. So I would order at least 3 main dishes for 2 people.I oculd not stand anymore so avoided the desserts. Its the first time in many years that I could say , I came away from a restaurant feeling hungry. The bill, as other reviewers noted is low per person. But then so is the quality. They need to really rethink what they are doing here.I would not recommend going, until they revamp, rehash and redo the whole place, including an improved keying system for the toilets and cleaning the corridors. Service is fine and helpful. But really, this is something out of the ark.

We enjoyed especially their fresh salads. Came here twice and also tried the vegetarian curry and some fritters. All dishes made from scratch and were fresh. Nothing to complain about. The interior is old but there wa sno problem with the stomach after eating and that is the most important. So do not worry even though it looks a bit weird at first sight.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this restaurant is basic and smack bang in the middle of Edgware Road which isn't my favourite part of London by any stretch of the imagination - but none of that matters when you sit down and eat the delicious food in Mandalay - I have never tried Burmese food and it was a real treat. Service was friendly and the family who run the place are lovely. I highly recommend any of the fritters, the raw papaya and cucumber salad the lamb in tamarind but I'm pretty sure anything you choose would be a pleasure to eat!

Had dinner with my boyfriend here and we both enjoyed it a lot. We are vegetarians and they have many nice vegetarian dishes. We had the coconut noodles, aubergine and potatoes, and omelet curry, they were all very tasty. The coconut rice was also really nice. Everything was quite cheap. We spent only 35 pounds for two people including drinks and desserts. The decor was indeed not so fancy, looks more like a cafeteria, but we thought the simpleness actually has its charm. Most important thing is that the food is really great, definitely worth a try.

I have been to Mandalay at least 10 times. The surroundings is nothing much - it is small, gets fairly crammed when it is full, and the decor is basic. But it is clean and the staff super friendly. The food is always good. This is Burmese cuisine, very interesting and different - with influences from Chinese, Thai and Indian food. Try the Tamarind Lamb and also Spinach ginger and garlic. And the Burmese noodles called Khow Suey. Food is very affordable, you can eat very well at abut £15 per head. Mandalay obviously has a very dedicated band of regulars, and seems to have won many awards (specially in the cheap foods categories) as is evident by the numerous wall hangings on display. Long may it continue.

My husband took me here on a date. From the outside I can't say that I was impressed for date night! Never judge a book by its cover! The food was lovely. Very basic surroundings, the place looks as though it is a take away joint that they have squeezed tables into. However, it is clean, the staff are lovely, the service is good and the food is great. I'm ashamed to say that I had not tried Burmese food before. My husband had the lamb (which I tried), great flavours. I had a curry and noodles. It was amazing. I want to go back so that I can have it again. Not the most romantic of settings, but who cares, the food is great. Love, love, love.

I, along with my friends and family, have been going to Mandalay since 2009. The owners knew us and we always spent a few minutes chatting with them during our visits. The restaurant itself is very basic and minimalistic. If you go to Mandalay you go for food and that's it. Space is tight. Table mats are old and show signs of excessive wear and tear. Cutlery and crockery are also very basic. Price reflects this as well which is fine. One day we were taking some friend a for lunch to Mandalay, so I booked a table for 7. We arrived on time and when we were seated, we were given a table which could just about seat 6 adults. I spoke to the owner and explained that we were very cramped and wouldn't be able to eat comfortably without elbowing each other. I said we would order starters and requested he join a single table in the meantime to allow us to sit more comfortably. While we were eating our starters, I didn't see much movement on the table front and my friends were quite obviously feeling uncomfortable squeezed in together. I requested the owner (who is also the manager) to try and work something out for us, remaining very polite and respectful having known him for so long, but what came my way after was shocking. He lashed out at me and said I was being unreasonable and that my friends should just eat in the space they had and leave. Shocked by this I wasn't able to respond. My husband asked the man to calm down and expressed disappointment at his behaviour. The man went on to rant a bit more and then said that we should just leave if we were so disappointed. This was 19 months ago. We haven't returned since.

I often go to restaurants that are recommended by timeout and they are usually good. Mandalay doesn't deserve London best cheap eat. Firstly it is not cheap at all, 8.90 for a lamb curry that doesn't come with rice, adding coconut rice ending up paying 12 pounds for a main course. Portions are small, food are tasteless. Restaurant is small, looked very dated with no decor and doesn't look hygienic. VERY overrated and overpriced for what it is.

I had heard good things about Mandalay for many years but had never managed a visit. Yesterday lunchtime on a sultry day, accompanied by a friend, I put that right. A warning for prospective visitors: don't go for the decor or dazzling service. This is a cafe-type destination. But the food is fantastic, made in a home-style way. I can recommend the tamarind chicken and fish in coconut milk. Utterly brilliant!

Before grabbing a train back to Newbury we were looking for Indian food and this was highly recommended and for very good reason. Superior quality food and extremely reasonable prices. Best call for reservations as it is a small place and was fully booked on a Monday evening. The owner is there actively involved with your ordering. The menu is varied but the house specialities are outstanding. We ate like Kings & Queens for about 65 USD.Worth the trip from anywhere.

The owners here are a very nice family who also own a budget B&B in Paddington. Very friendly and kind people, the cafe is very basic and functional, a bit of a squeeze and at times noisy depending on how busy it is (especially at weekends). We've been a couple of times, the first time both our food was very good indeed, mine the national dish of noodles in a coconut/chilli/veg sauce, and my partner the spiced rice, which made her moan with pleasure! The second visit (a direct consequence of the yummyness of the first...), the dishes were very much average fare and nothing really special. The dessert I had on the second visit seemed to be pitched to a child and very 70s like. We would certainly go back at some stage though, preferably through the week when it isn't as busy, and booking is recommended. Don't forget, this is a functional cafe, serving cafe-style food, so don't raise your expectations unrealistically, and enjoy the warm welcome and this Burmese cafe for what it is. Enjoy.

This was my first time trying Burmese food, so I asked a lot of questions. The server (thought he might have been the owner?) was very patient and helpful and I ended up going with his recommendations. The food was pretty good overall, especially the tea leaf salad...I've never tried anything quite like it. The restaurant itself is rather cramped and desperately in need of some updating. The padlocked loo was downright scary. I would consider a return visit if I found myself nearby, but not sure I would go too far out of my way to go back.

I was not expecting much in terms of atmosphere or interior décor. However, the food was really below mediocre, the prices completely industry standard (3-5 pounds for starters, 7-9 pounds for main) and the portions noticeably small. I needed to get a sandwich after paying 20 quid for the dinner with friends. Summary: really not worth it, massively overrated.

Having read all the reviews I was really looking forward to eating here but I left very disappointed. We had the mixed fritters which were various deep fried vegetables that all tasted the same, the chicken samosa which were very tasty and I had the "spicy" lamb curry, which while good wasn't spicy in the least ( and I'm not massively into spicy food). The worst thing about the whole evening was the service, it was awful. The man serving us clearly didn't know what he was doing - there was no smile, my drink was taken away before I had finished it and we waited for 15-20 minutes to get our bill even though it wasn't that busy (clearly the infamous Mr Ali wasn't in on the night I went!).Sadly I would not go back, there must be a better place in London that serves Burmese food.

This time I visited with my family (we have Burmese blood) and I wanted to impress them. They were not disappointed and we enjoyed the lovely dishes which reminded of our dear departed Mum's cooking!Only downside is the décor but as the food is so reasonably priced, you get what you pay for - good flavoursome food. I'm going to Myanmar in November and was looking to have a little taste of it when I found this restaurant online. I made a booking for 9pm on a Friday for 5 of us.We shared some samosas and papadums to start which were nice, although on the small side. We then shared a few different plates, chicken, spinash, prawns, different rices and all was very tasty! Given the prices, it's really good value for money. The owner was also super friendly with us taking the time to take us through different dishes. The restaurant itself is quite dated and you actually feel like you are somewhere in Asia for the time of a meal. One little downside was the wine... It really wasn't nice at all but then again... At that price, it wasn't a surprise.
