What an amazing place and not far from the Royal Mile. You need to visit here of you're in the area. Make a reservation if possible and if not, the staff will try to get you in soonest. The food is amazing a so is the selection of beers. Staff is helpful and very accommodating! You won't regret the experience.

As probably one of many people, I saw them online on TikTok and wanted to give it a try. I had high expectations, and the reviews were amazing, so I booked a table for myself. But I was kind of underwhelmed. The Scotch eggs were very underseasoned and kind of cold? I was so disappointed with that because they apparently were a must-eat item on the menu. The main course, on the other hand, was delicious! But I waited a loooong time on it (almost 30, 40 minutes). But that dish seemed very fresh! It was hot, delicious, and very well seasoned. But when I wanted to order another beer with my main, no one came to my table, even when I tried to acknowledge the waiters that were around. They all saw the empty glass on my table but never did anything, even when I tried to get their attention. When I eventually did get another beer, I had already almost finished my dessert, which was the sticky toffee pudding. It was very tasty, but it clearly came from the microwave because it was hot on the outside and just stone cold in the middle. I also got asked to move to a different table because they needed the four top that I got seated at when I entered the place. I was already waiting on my dessert when they asked the question. I don't mind moving, but it all just felt weird, especially that late into the evening. Why would you put a single person at a four-top table anyway? Besides the main course, I was just incredibly underwhelmed by my experience at this place. The service was pretty decent, but the food was a let-down for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Proper comfort food with a Scottish soul – absolutely brilliant! We had an amazing lunch at Makars Gourmet Mash Bar. From the moment we walked in, the place had a warm, rustic vibe with stone walls and lovely service to match. It’s a fantastic spot if you’re after hearty, locally sourced food that’s full of character. The mini haggis, neeps & tatties taster was a perfect introduction – rich, savoury and balanced with creamy mash and peppercorn sauce. For mains, I went for the vegetarian haggis stack – packed with flavour and beautifully layered with root veg mash. The sauces are where Makars really shine – velvety, punchy, and generous in portion. We also tried the Scotch egg bites – wonderfully crispy outside, soft-boiled inside, and served with a moreish dip. The Bon Accord Rhubarb Soda was a refreshing treat alongside all the richness. What really impressed me was how they cater to all diets without compromising flavour. The menu clearly marks gluten-free and vegan options – and the variety of mash customisation is a brilliant touch! If you’re in Edinburgh and looking for a proper Scottish experience beyond just the clichés, this is the place. Great value, cosy setting, and food that sticks to your ribs in the best way. Will definitely be back next time I’m in town!

Crazy busy all the time but the staff managed it as well, beyond expectation considering the cramped (cozy?) quarters. Amazing how fast the food came out and it was hot and yummy. The waitresses were friendly and quick. Menu choices are limited, but that helps their efficiency. Recommend you book a table several weeks to months in advance.

A Truly Memorable Meal at Makars Makars is an absolute must-visit if you’re looking for hearty, delicious food with a touch of Scottish soul. From the moment I walked in, the warm, welcoming atmosphere set the tone for an excellent dining experience. The food was phenomenal—flavorful, comforting, and beautifully presented. Their signature mashed potatoes are genuinely next level—creamy, rich, and the perfect pairing for their slow-cooked meats and savory gravies. You can tell everything is made with care and quality ingredients. The staff were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, offering great recommendations without being pushy. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, Makars delivers on all fronts: food, service, and ambiance. Highly recommended if you want a taste of authentic, elevated Scottish comfort food!

Was recommended this place by a tour guide — was not disappointed! We loved it so much we even came back the next day. I have seen a few reviews saying the food was under-seasoned but as someone who has been living here for 2 years, this is very typical of British food (to be slightly under-seasoned), the salt and pepper provided on your tables are for you to add to your desired taste! Haggis (£19) — 9/10! Honestly my first time having haggis and it set the bar HIGH. Loved that it didn't have a very strong "meat smell" (asians will probably know what I mean 😭), and the honey & turnip purée balanced it out perfectly. Tried it with the classic mash and the applewood cheese mash, both were excellent but the applewood cheese mash added an extra "oomph" for sure! The mustardy cream sauce cut through the meaty flavour of the haggis, good pairing! They also make their own haggis instead of getting it from a supplier. Wild Boar Sausage (£19) — 9/10 Massively upgraded bangers and mash. A little expensive imo but the boar sausages were good, not gamey at all. Pairs well with the mustard or applewood mash! Lamb Shank (£23) — 6.5/10 Really lovely and the gravy was excellent. Wasn't fall-off-the-bone tender but was not tough at all. A little too gamey for me. Apple & Cinnamon Crumble (£7) — 7/10 Portion size is pretty small, but the crumble was yum. I don't think they sweetened it at all so you can sort of customise the sweetness as you add the custard (which wasn't as sweet as regular custard either). Loved it as crumble + custard is wayyyyy too sweet for me normally. Could've appreciated more tang with the apple though! Thistly Cross Traditional Cider and Thistly Cross Elderflower Cider are the drinks we ordered, really really nice. Overall, food is delicious, portion sizes for mains are generous, staff are lovely, interior is nice, average. Would recommend!

We came at about 2:45 and able to get a seat at 3:45. Service was great, the food is average, most dishes were a bit too salty or too sauce or both in my opinion. I general prefer the original flavour of main food themselves, rather than heavy salted gravy.

This is my second visit and I came back because I had such good food last time. This time I was a little disappointed with my scotch egg, it seemed to have been cut and sat a little while before it was served to me because it was a little dry where cut. I ordered the bacon mash to go with it and I was a little underwhelmed, wasn’t bad but I’d order something different next time because it was a little dull on flavour. I had the sticky toffee for dessert but it was incredibly sweet, almost wish they focused more on the dates rather than the sugar in the recipe. All in all, the service was great and the staff were super friendly :)

A wholly excellent dining experience. Although the restaurant was full, we didn't have to wait long for a table to free up. The wait staff were very efficient. From the time they took our orders to the food arriving, it took about 10 minutes. Although service was fast, Makars didn't compromise on quality. We made reservations for Makar's Mash Bar so there was no wait to be seated. They have two different locations - one for reservations and one without reservations. We got the following: Mini haggis, neeps, and tatters taster - this was our first taste of haggis and we thought it was great Homegrown lion's manes bites starter - this was my least favorite item. The bites were predominantly batter with very little mushroom flavor House salad with Scotch egg - good salad and Scotch egg Tenderstem broccoli - good tenderstem broccoli Lamb shank and horseradish mashed potatoes - fall off the bone tender lamb, really good portion Sticky toffee pudding - this was excellent I really enjoyed this meal. Good food and service. Would recommend coming here for a near and potatoes meal.

After being unable to secure a table on my last visit to Edinburgh I made the wise decision of booking weeks in advance! My anticipation was as big as my appetite and Makars Mash did not disappoint! The beef shoulder was succulent and delicious. My partner said her haggis was the best she has tasted and my notoriously fussy eater of a sister was a big fan of the sausages and horseradish mash. 🤤 The sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream is a must have. The cranachan was good, but if you have even a little lactose intolerance, maybe give that one a miss. 😬😅 Shout out to Roman who had a lovely way about him and checked in often to make sure we were all enjoying our meals and gave some great recommendations! From wild boar sausage to breaded lions mane mushrooms, there's a good selection to please your pallete. The mash with creamed horseradish was surprisingly mild (at least for me). You can make a reservation in advance or queue outside. There is an app for reservation. It is completely online reservation. If you need to change it, you can do it from the online app. Business is very good, with a constant stream of people. It takes about 15 minutes from ordering to serving. I personally recommend Haggis. The lamb offal is not muttony and is very delicious with the sauce. It is worth recommending and common sense. The lamb shank is chewy and the portion is large. It can be used as a main meal. It is a perfect match with the cider in the store. The scotch egg is not hot when it is served, and the outer layer is not crispy enough, but the meat is still processed at a very high level without any peculiar smell. Overall, whether it is food, price, environment or service, they are all of a certain standard. The only drawback is that the dining tables are relatively narrow. If you bring a bag, be careful not to bump into the drinks and meals at the next table!

Disappointed. £8 for a scotch egg, I would expect this to be made fresh and have crispy breaded shell, instead it had been reheated and was soggy on outside. Mash potato needs a lot more butter to be tasty, fairly tasteless mash, not enough gravy and tasteless lamb shank. My girlfriend thought the same, she had beef and put so much pepper on it to get any flavour. Shame as I was so excited to try this place but was very disappointed ☹️ personally I would not go again. We first got the beef-lamb haggis, which is a signature dish here. It tasted really unique, the sandwich-like structure allowed me to taste three different flavors at once. Then, we got the spatchcock chicken, which was juicy and tender. The only thing I didn't like as much was how peppery the dishes were, it was kind of burning my throat as I ate them. We also got the house salad with the scotch egg, and the pork mince in the egg was just as peppery, but the scotch egg was very unique in terms of taste. I would strongly recommend the smoked bacon & spring onion mash, these two ingredients really enhanced the taste of the mash! Service was friendly but as the restaurant is always busy, it may be hard to catch the waiter/waitress's attention and service can be slow. Sorbet was OK, but the lemon and berry flavors were too sour for my liking. It's best to get a reservation online because the restaurant is real busy and the walk-in side always has a queue.

Booked a table at this place a while back due to its popularity... I am so glad I did as the server was turning away so many people that hadn't reserved a table. My partner and I both went for the Scotch Egg as starts, and I must say... this was the best scotch egg we have ever had! The meat and egg were just perfect, and we loved the dip it came with! I also got a local craft beer and enjoyed it. I had never tried haggis before, so I had to go for that as my main. Then you have the fun part of choosing your mash potato from the selection... I went for the Black Pudding mash. The meal was absolutely delicious! Really loved the sauce that came it as it really complimented the haggis and mash. I actually really liked the haggis and would have it again! My partner had the Beef with Cheddar Cheese Mash Potato and really enjoyed it. She even let me try the beef, and it was very succulent. What a great lunch / dinner spot to have Scottish food! I would definitely recommend booking in advance because the number of people they had to turn away was mad. I had a starter, a main, and a drink, and it came to £33 which is quite reasonable, really. My starter was the Scotch egg, which was absolutely incredible. Hands down, the best Scotch egg I have ever had in my life. The flavour was just amazing. My main was the slow cooked beef (yummy! It literally melted in my mouth), and then I went for the mature Cheddar mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were so creamy, just delicious!

Very good food, fair price and polite service. We ordered a leg of lamb with mashed potatoes and a dish with mushrooms. We enjoyed it with a delicious Scottish beer. Everything was excellent! The food came out quickly and the service from Henrique (Brazilian) and Laura was exceptional! It’s really worth it!

Really awesome! My first time trying haggis. I had the veggie haggis and classic mash. The king oyster mushrooms were awesome as well and they had a lot of great ciders. I was amazed by all the vegan and non-vegan options and the service was stupendous.

Very lovely place , we were walk in and afraid of no place to seat. But the restaurant reserved a lot for walk-in, which is great. We were 4 peoples, one of my friend is pregnant, so we asked about which dishes she could not have, the staff clearly mentioned. So she was happy to enjoy her meal. We had 4main and 2soups, all taste so great. Is really a good place especially when I bring someone to visit Edinburgh, is a must visit restaurant 🥳

Delicious, reasonably priced, good atmosphere. Gets deservedly busy around mealtimes, so consider a reservation or going during off hours.

I am a big fan of mash. I wanted to try this unique restaurant, everything with Mash. I was seated quickly and a glass and water jug was presented immediately. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. I Made my choices. I had the haggis, Neeps and tatties as a starter. The haggis was very very good. I followed with the lamb shank. Again very tasty and beautifully cooked. The meat falling of the bone and with a succulent flavour. The Mash I ordered was the basic mash and the texture was just perfect. Just how I like my mash. Normally I would not take a desert, after such big platefuls, but I had to try the crumble and I was not disappointed. The presentation of each dish was perfect. I had walked past the restaurant a few times and it was always busy. That in itself is a good sign. I reserved in advance and I was glad I did. I would recommend booking in advance if you want to try the Mash bar. I will return again on a future trip to Edinburgh.

It's award winning for a reason. And there's always a wait. Book online if you can but they do have walk-ins though the wait might be long. There are two locations within 4 doors of each other. This address is the annex. I'd suggest going a little further down for the original location. You can't really go wrong with the food. We ate here twice in a span of 6 nights. My favorite is the chicken and the lamb and any of the mash would do.

We had lunch at this place. The main dishes were delicious, but the broccoli was not fresh and immediately smelled like a "dirty rag". We told the waiter about it, the administrator came up to us and did not admit that the product was not fresh. He deducted the cost of the broccoli from the bill, but did not apologize to us. The attitude of the staff towards us immediately changed and as a result we changed our minds about ordering dessert. We will not return to this bar again. Although this was not our first visit to this place.

I've eyed this place for years on many Edinburgh visits but as it seemed to be bang on the tourist trap trial, and slightly above what I'd pay for a casual lunch in prices, I'd never gone until last week during a leisurely visit. And the fears about the "tourist trap for captive audience" proved very unfounded! Some of the food was excellent, none was bad and overall the experience was very enjoyable. We didn't book, so we had to wait for nearly an hour (table for 3). This was managed very efficiently, we got a notification as soon as a table became available, so we didn't have to wait at the door / in a queue. The place is a quite small, but didn't seem oppressively noisy and as we don't mind sitting near others, the "cosy" setting didn't bother us. We had two vegetarian and one meat (chicken) option, and I have to say that the meat one was by far the best (beautifully cooked and seasoned to perfection), tho the veggie mushroom option was also pretty good. Gravies and all the mash types we tried all very good. The vegetarian haggis was, however, disappointing, lacking haggis spicing/flavours, more like a slightly curried nut roast. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't haggis. I wonder why Makars don't offer a fish option? A hot smoked salmon chunk or even better, poached smoked haddock in a more solid take on Cullen skink, atop a pile of flavoured mash would work beautifully! I also need to highlight the SUPERB tender stem broccoli side. So few places get broccoli right (nowadays it's usually undercooked) and this was perfect, with masses of cracked black pepper, generously buttered and substantial portion size. We only tried one pudding - cranachan, which was subtly but very nicely flavoured with whisky and honey, and tasty, but DEFINITELY needed more fresh raspberries in addition to (nice tho) trickle of coulis. And most certainly more toasted oats! (we are from the Highlands tho so maybe oatmeal content was adjusted for less oat-familiar audience). All in all, a rewarding experience, and especially recommended if you eat meat or love mushrooms.

For two people who weren’t from Scotland, and didn’t fancy a huge meal, we thoroughly enjoyed sharing a starter of neaps, tatties and haggis and a main of beef shoulder and mild applewood smoked cheese mash. Haggis done so palatable for a foreign pallet. Without a doubt some of the best hearty food we’ve ever tried and well worth the trip from Australia. Mushroom cellar was a cool bonus!

Well worth the wait. Don’t let the line put you off this place is quick! I don’t think a table was empty more than 30 sec. But there is a reason for it, food is incredible!! The boar sausages over bacon and chive mash were phenomenal. Also the largest scotch egg i have ever seen. Definitely worth it for at least one meal if in town. Service was friendly and prompt, just great all around.

Wow! This place is really wonderful. Difficult to book but it’s not a problem. You rock up to number 12 say how many and they take your details give you a rough time your table will be available and you get a text message to ask if you’re on your way or cancel. The food is really lovely especially if you’re a veggie or vegan Bdgetarian haggis is really lovely and the vegetarian sausages are superb. It comes with a massive choice of mash and suede and a pepper sauce all delicious. Wine a fair price and all vegan. Puddings look fab too.Definitely a place to head to if you’re fed up with the chains.

Unpopular option: But you can go there and actually order something that isn’t Mash. That’s right. I said it. I needed a snack in the middle of the afternoon.. not really anything super heavy. I ordered the house salad with a scotch egg, along with a side of broccoli. It was a ton of food, but I didn’t feel too full before dinner. 10 out of 10.
