Best vegetarian haggis and mashed potatoes ever tasted!! Everything was so perfect and the staff really welcoming. Alan and Caitlin did a great job.

We booked into Makars Mash Bar after hearing and reading only glowing reviews. Sadly, the food and service were average at the absolute best. As we arrived, the restaurant was clearly very busy, and our table wasn't ready despite booking. We were then stuck round a little corner and seemingly forgotten for a while until someone remembered we were there. We weren't the only ones either, as the table next to us asked if they were supposed to go up to the desk to order as they'd been waiting so long. To be fair though, once ordered, the food arrived in double-quick time. The haggis was quite good but nothing like the glowing reviews had suggested it would be. The wild boar sausages, though - oof - they arrived as if they'd been freshly chopped off King Charles' hand. They were undercooked and personally not the texture you want from a banger. Most of this dish was sent back uneaten. To be fair though, the sticky toffee pudding ordered for dessert is really rather good, although it was slightly disappointing that there was no option for custard rather than ice cream. Finally, when it came time for the plates to be cleared away and to be provided the bill, we had seemingly been completely forgotten again. We had to ask multiple times for the bill, and then again when we wanted to pay for the meal itself. All together, Makars Mash Bar doesn’t really live up to the hype.

Food was amazing! We had to wait more than an hour but it was definitely worth it!! Would love to go back next time we travel to Edinburgh! The scotch eggs were amazing and the main dish as well!

Absolutely delightful! The service was top-notch, super friendly waiters and personalized attention. The food was excellent, we had the chicken and the haggis with different mash options, they were both spectacular!! I will recommend it to anyone visiting Edinburgh, and would certainly be back.

We heard of this place sorta last min so we weren’t able to make a reservation. Fortunately the wait was only :30 which might have been even less. We stood in line then added to the list. Walked next door for some shopping and before we knew it, it was time. Staff was awesome I wish I got our servers name but he’s the super tall guy that literally almost hits his head at the downstairs ceiling! Food was good mash was great. Cider I had was fantastic as well. Overall very pleasant experience and would return.

There are times when you need food for the soul; reliable rich reassuring comforting food that tells you you're going to be okay. For those times it's Makars Mash Bar. Fortify yourself.

Was told it was a 15 minute wait. Came back and asked and he said it was a 50 minute wait. Young lady before me came back for 14 minute wait and was told it was 40 minutes. Be sure you get the correct time. Food was bland and beer did not arrive.

If you’re gluten free and visiting- this is a must. Gluten free scotch eggs and beef with cheesy mash and gravy… need I really say more? If you’re able to, make reservations ahead of time to avoid a wait.

Excellent food! We had lamb shanks and it was absolutely delicious! And The sticky toffee pudding is an absolutely must try,) We saw how extremely busy the place was and were amazed how the staff is organised in working as a team. Great work guys! Special thanks to Scott whose friendly and professional attitude combined with great sense of humour made our lunch even better 😀 The best food in Edinburgh we have ever had! We hadn't booked, but if you go in advance you get in the queue, leave your phone number and they'll call you back. The guys are all nice. The food, well what can I say, probably the best dishes eaten in 9 days in Scotland. Try the haggis and Scotch eggs, but also the lamb which is so soft it melts in your mouth. The lentil soup was very spicy but we had been warned.

Absolutely fantastic service and food! We were able to eat the traditional Scottish food, and there was something for everyone’s taste preferences. They even had great vegan adaptations of Scottish dishes! A great must-go place for tourists in Edinburgh.

Over rates in my opinion, mashed potatoes could be better trying to hard to make them special, Lamb was soft and tender but not wow , good place

I ordered the classics from Scotland: haggis and beef thigh. Both were amazing. We had to wait for an hour to get in, but... it was worth it! Amazing place, amazing people. Must try, see and eat in Edinburgh.

Absolutely loved this restaurant. Tried the haggis neeps and tatties starter for a taste of traditional food and had the beef for my main course. Both courses were super tasty. Honestly couldn't recommend more. I will definitely be coming here again soon.

Came here for the scotch eggs, late in the evening...they were excellent. Henrique and Bev were fantastic servers, and we're always there for help and recommendations.

Okay, that's great. The shop is open and the tables are filling up quickly. You should come and wait in line early. There are 2 shops close to each other. You can walk in and have a look first so you don't have to queue for a long time.

It is very easy to recommend this place. Good food and good service. We tried the taster haggis (veg), soup of the day, chicken breast with classic mash and beef with mustard mash. It was very tasty and filling. Update: We visited again recently and loved all of it. Tried the scotch eggs, sausage and mash as well as lamb shack and chicken with mash. It is advisable to book in advance, but their outlet takes walk in also. The whole process is smooth and can have 20min wait times.

When we arrived we were immediately sat at a table. The host was extremely professional and very friendly. Unfortunately this would be the end of the good experience. We sat at our table long enough for other tables to be sat, order, eat and pay before our order was taken. Another patron informed his waiter that we looked like we were ready to order when he got his bill. Our appetizer, when it finally arrived, came out at room temperature. We waited a long time for our entrées to arrive. The chicken and lamb shank came out dry, as if it had been under a heat lamp for a half hour. We were never checked on, and our drinks remained empty. We had to flag down a server to ask for the bill. It took two hours to get through the restaurant.

Even though it's a popular restaurant, I visited without making a reservation, so I ended up waiting for an hour. Within 40 minutes of walking along the Royal Mile, I received a call. The menu is Scottish cuisine, but it was easy to eat and the meat dishes were very delicious. Stem broccoli, which I'm not used to seeing, was also a staple here. Desserts are also delicious. I think it's better to make a reservation because it's crowded.

Best place to go in Edinburgh for Haggis! The staff are all lovely, the food was delicious - we will be back next time we visit Edinburgh.

Excellent meal in this restaurant. Everything was very good, both main course and dessert. We tested the beef shoulder as well as the vegetarian haggis and the apple/red fruit crumble. The welcome was also very warm. I highly recommend!

We randomly stumbled upon this place wandering round the royal mile. We were astounded at the queue! After around a 20 min wait we were seated inside. The restaurant felt a bit cramped inside but the attentiveness of the staff made up for it. We were recommend the lionsmane mushrooms by our waitress Julia which did not disappoint!! Would highly recommend especially to other vegetarians although the meat-eater at our table also enjoyed it. We were also recommended a citrusy gin with the house tonic which was an excellent choice. Overall would say it was worth the wait and hype!

This place was so busy on the days we were in Edinburgh, the staff had awesome system of messaging you when a table was ready so you could grab a drink elsewhere while waiting. When you did get your table service was great & didn't feel rushed knowing how busy they were. Definitely worth a visit, not your run of the mill menu and food we chose was delicious. Highly recommend.

MAKE RESERVATIONS! The beef was the greatest and so flavorful. The lamb was also delicious. Both melt in your mouth and are so tender. The mash…a bit gooey rather than light and fluffy potatoes. The flavor was good. Would definitely go back when in Edinburgh! The sticky toffee pudding was exceptional! Get it!

Really unique restaurant just doing one thing and one thing well. Good vegetarian options with the options of house grown mushrooms.

This restaurant has long wait times but those are well deserved! I'd recommend booking in advance or going earlier in the day for a chance of a seat. The food is fantastic! We had veggie haggis (mustard mash) and veggie sausage (bean mash), with sticky toffee pudding to finish. And we loved it!

Friendly and relaxed atmosphere for a truly gourmet experience. The food was delicious. The portion sizes were generous. The meats were tender & flavourful. We used the walk-in door for lunch on a busy Sunday & the wait was only 30 minutes.

Wonderful place where staff was attentive and nice. Recommendations were on point and the food was excellent, definitely a place you would like to visit often.

Wow! What a place! You pick from 4 or five traditional Scottish dinners and add a mash from a variety of unique mash combinations. Both our dishes were very creative and tasty. Our host Scott made great recommendations and service was top notch.

We made the reservation as walkin (25min later)and have been told that receiving a text message in 25min. The text message never sent and we were there after 25min, they have told that table was given to somebody else. Nobody cooperate to find a table for us.

We made a reservation, no one called us, when we go at the reservation time, he said we gave your table.

Minimal and touristy environment (don't expect an authentic Scottish pub) but typical quality dishes prepared with care. Sufficient assortment of local beers. Fast and friendly service, cleanliness and order despite very large customers

Was recommended this spot by my nutritionist. Absolutely delicious food and the customer service is probably the best I've ever experienced. The gentleman who greeted people at the door was multilingual which was lovely to see, especially for somewhere that is such a tourist hot spot. All the staff were polite, attentive and nothing was too much trouble. As for the food, you pick your meat and then your mash (or salad or broccoli if you prefer!) and then enjoy! There are so many combinations to try. I had the lamb and Scottish nature cheddar mash it was easily some of the best lamb I've had. Fell right off the bone! Cutlery and water was given to me within moments of sitting down which was brilliant as I'd just slogged my way up Arthur's Seat and back and definitely needed it. Also to note, I didn't feel rushed at all. As a solo traveller there are places that try and push you along as bigger tables = more money, but that's not the case at all here. I saw families, couples, larger groups and people dining alone and everyone had smiles on their faces having a good time! It was so wonderful to sit and enjoy my food without worrying about "taking up a table" The music was also great, lots of 70s, 80s and 90s stuff which is absolutely my vibe. It was loud enough to hear and enjoy, but so loud you couldn't enjoy a good chat. Overall, brilliant spot and would highly recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh.

The food and service at Makars Mash Bar were over the top wonderful! I had the Lion’s Mane Mushroom entree, one of several delicious sounding vegan dishes on the menu (pictured). My husband had a non-vegan dish that he raved about (I was too busy enjoying my own meal to recall what he had!). I also had the berry crumble with non dairy “ice cream,” and it was so delicious. The staff were all so helpful, friendly, and professional.

Definitely work a visit. Food was superb and they handle dietary requirements too. tables were booked up 2 weeks in advance but they do have some walking slots available.

The Mash Bar is incredible! My daughter and I visited whilst in Edinburgh for her 30th Birthday. The reviews were very good and we liked the menu so went along. There was a 20 minute wait for a table, so we gave our name and contact number and then went off for a little mooch around the shops closed by. We returned exactly 20 minutes later and the table was ready for us. We had a fabulous meal, slow cooked lamb shank and the most delicious mash! Even though it was packed, we had fantastic service, very friendly and helpful. The drinks came quickly and the meal followed soon after. We have never been in a restaurant that has been so constantly busy, but still the staff are happy and very attentive, either as a customer or a member of staff, and we have worked in a few restaurants and bars between us! These guys have it sussed! It was a great choice for a birthday lunch! I would highly recommend and when I'm next in Edinburgh, I will definitely be back. Worth all the five stars and more!

We reserved a table and were told that we would have to wait an hour for a table, and that they would send us a message when the table was ready so we could sit down. After receiving the message, I replied that we would arrive within 10 minutes and confirmed via text that we were coming. However, when we arrived on time, we were told that our table had been given to someone else, and there was no apology at all. I don't understand how such poor service and management could earn such a high rating.

Good experience, very good mash, meat I expected something more. Fast service also because there is always a long queue, we waited about 20 minutes (at lunch) and it was worth it, but I wouldn't wait 2 hours to eat here as can happen in the evening

Don’t believe Xiaohongshu! The leg of lamb is still delicious! You can smell it even from the kitchen chimney. Maybe the ceiling for Scottish cuisine is too low? ? This store has two facades. The one at the corner only accepts reservations. Although the one down the slope allows you to make reservations without reservations, there are many reservation orders and they are treated politely. However, the estimated time of queuing without reservations is very inaccurate, and the attitude of the store clerk is to answer questions. reason. Whoever is the grievance will line up and pass.

A delightful dinner at a reasonable price. The menu was relatively broad, with gluten free and vegetarian options, in addition to meat-based dishes. I chose the beef shoulder, and it tasted like "Sunday dinner in a bowl".

Amazing experience! This was our last meal during our trip to Scotland and what a fantastic way to end the vacation. The service was exceptional and all the food was incredibly tasty. There was a wait of a little over an hour (we simply roamed around in the meantime), but it was well worth the wait. We ordered three of the mash potatoes, the lamb and beef shoulder. 10/10 on everything.

Amazing cosy place to be around, and well supported by good quality food. The lamb was an absolute melt in mouth dish and we could have added a more spicy mash, but probably weren't suggested much choices and we were left to eat at our own mercy 😜 But honestly, whatever we ordered based on the reviews, we were quite satisfied with the content that we had on our table. Barring the long wait (place is booked until late Sep) and cleanliness of the toilets, had a wonderful time 👍

By far the best restaurant I had during my very short stay in Scotland. Friends had warmly recommended it to me and I was therefore curious to come and taste the famous puree. I came there around 3:30 p.m. and the room was already full even though we were outside lunch hours. The wait is, however, very well managed because we take your contact details and give you an estimate of the waiting time. I was told 20 minutes so I took the opportunity to go for a walk while waiting. The app they use sends you notifications to let you know if they will be late or early. So I came back when I had to and I was settled in pretty quickly. I wanted to try several things so I asked if it was possible to have children's portions. Well obviously I'm not one so I was told no, but that it was possible to have a half adult portion of the dishes offered in children's portions, for half the base price (which is practically at the price of the child portion). So I had half a portion of haggis and a half portion of sausage. For my "Mash" I took the one with spring onion and bacon and the one with applewood smoked cheese. The plates arrived very quickly and I immediately had a smile when I tasted my dishes. It's really delicious. Mash are their specialty and it shows. They are creamy, well buttered, well seasoned, with an incredible texture. I had never eaten such good ones in my life. The onion sauce (for the sausages) was also delicious and in good quantity. The sausage (there would have been two for the "normal" portion) was good and well cooked. I had never tasted haggis in my life and it was really good. I, who was doubtful, really liked it, even if I admit that it's not necessarily the dish that I would order often. The taste is quite strong with an aftertaste that stays in the mouth, a bit like when you eat black pudding. It came with an orange puree (probably sweet potato), the chosen Mash and a horseradish sauce. I recommend the Cheese Mash which is just incredible. I really fell in love with it. The prices are a little high, it seems to me that I got the whole thing for €17. However, you should know that the portions are super generous. Just with half a portion I would clearly have already been satisfied. The staff is really good. They wrote their name on the business card for me but I'm not sure I could proofread it properly. It was a girl and a boy named Rae and Carl (?) maybe? In any case I thank them because I had a great time thanks to them. The room is not the most pleasant because there are a lot of people, it is very noisy and it is difficult to move around. The entrance quickly gets very crowded so when you're waiting to get in or waiting to check out, it's a bit chaotic. However, the kitchen totally overshadows these minor inconveniences. In summary? I recommend this address 200%. Don't be worried about the queue, they manage reservations very well and even if you wait a bit, you can walk around while you wait. The currency museum opposite is really nice, free, and will help you pass the time.

If our table opened early we came back about 30 minutes later and had a seat. Beef shoulder was delicious and tender and the lions made mushrooms were yummy. I had the pilot lager, a gluten-free beer. I won’t have again. I should have gone with the stout. The gluten-free desserts were just that gluten-free. My wife has that diet. I don’t stick with the ice cream or the single malt scotches. The service was excellent

Best scotch egg we’ve had during our travels. It’s incredibly busy though so get there early as you can expect an hour wait if you don’t have a reservation. I will say, the food came incredibly quickly but it took a moment to get our bill and pay. Regardless, Ash and Caitlin were great! Definitely recommend.
