Had lunch here and then came back for the evening BBQ summer event. The lunch and BBQ were very well done. The service at both were good. Having lunch by the river was nice.

Beautiful location that you cannot fault (apart from the noise of the busy A12) and the food is good, however what lets it down is the over inflated price. It’s extortionate for the quality of the food which I believe you could get in another restaurant for a more reasonable price. The staff were friendly and attentive.

A lovely spot, a well presented restaurant, delightful staff. A bit let down by the cooking. No specific complaints but my slow cooked pork was tough ( not cooked slow enough or long enough, and the roast potatoes accompanying the beef were grim, too big, a bit raw and deep fat roasted. A well roasted spud is a wonderous thing- these were not. I saw many make a return journey to the kitchen!! The beef was nice and there is theatre with the carving in the room. The meal for 2 was £130+ with n coffee and only one glass of wine as one diner was driving.

I visited with the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs and we had a superb meal, in the company of Ian Rhodes (General Manager and a member) and of the owner of the establishment. We started with some of the last of the season's fresh asparagus, followed with stone bass and marine vegetables, and closed with a deconstructed black forest gateau. The service was impeccable and the ambience of the restaurant, right beside the river on a summer's day, was perfect.. Being mobility-impaired I was exceedingly kindly-and well-looked-after. Frankly, the whole experience would have been hard to better

We stayed here for a family wedding, our room was large and well appointed. We found the fan too noisy to leave on at night and with the windows open it was rather annoying to listen to both staff, we were situated close to the kitchen, and guests who have no concept of the need to speak quietly after eleven at night. Our breakfast on both days was excellent, not an enormous choice, but everything was of a good quality, the sausages were excellent, this is from a non sausage eater. Dinner was good, although having to write your own order was unexpected, but all our party of 15 enjoyed the food, two items in particular stood out, the squid rings and a duck starter.

Whilst staying at Maison Talbooth we enjoyed being transported to and from Le Talbooth for one evening meal. We had booked well in advance and were not impressed that rather being seated in the restaurant we were seated in outside 'conservatory' more or less attached to the main building. The meal was good but not good value for money. A subsequent meal for 2 at a nearby restaurant cost in total less than the cost of a single course at Le Talbooth and the quality was really excellent. Going back to Maison Talbooth - only a Continental breakfast is served at the establishment, but those wanting a full breakfast need to travel to Milsoms to get it. The Continental breakfast proved to be disappointing and not what is to be expected from good quality establishment. Having said that the service was fine.

We were blessed with warms sunny weather which enabled us to enjoy the fantastic pool and spa facilities at the hotel. We loved our stay from the moment we arrived until we departed. The room was on ground floor with doors on to a private patio which made it easier to pop our small dog out for a walk and was beautifully decorated {Masefield} and had a generous choice of complimentary drinks and snacks, Dyson fan and sky T.V. The staff were very friendly and fussed over our dog , Mary Anne, Lauren & Sarah very helpful. We had dinner and breakfast at the adjoining Milsoms restaurant a short drive away food and presentation excellent. Would recommend.

We stayed for 3 nights here in a ground floor room. The hotel is well kept and has a lovely setting, and very peaceful. The grounds are well cared for, and everything was kept clean whilst we were there. Rooms are spacious and well equipped. ( note there is no air conditioning in the room which in the high temperatures of summer can be uncomfortable. We were provided with a fan for our room) The staff here are very welcoming and excellent ambassadors for the company, nothing was too much trouble. The food at both restaurants was very good, in fact superb to be honest, and would recommend a stay here to include dining at both Milsoms and Le Talbooth. Transfers to and from the restaurants was rapid without any real waiting around. There is no bar facility so bring your own nightcap! Or enjoy one before returning home. It feels a very safe place to rest and rejuvenate. Swimming pool was a treat with lunch delivered and again very tasty. We enjoyed both the room service continental breakfast and the traditional menu at Milsoms, both excellent quality. A few minor details were disappointing for me personally which I intend to take up with the hotel directly, and are only constructive to make this place even more enjoyable, but to be frank they wouldn’t prevent myself or my lovely wife from staying here again. We read so many complaints on trip advisor about all sorts of small issues which could easily be resolved directly with the hotel, and yet many use this platform in a biased way, with the hotel not able to respond and rectify. We are confident that you will have a very pleasant experience here and no doubt be well looked after, and more importantly, will recommend and return. Very pleasant few days. Thank you Milsom family.

We were taking a short break at Maison Talbooth hotel and dined on two nights at La Talbooth Restaurant. The hotel arranged our bookings and provided a courtesy car to take us from the hotel to the restaurant. The driver took us into the restaurant and we were immediately escorted to our reserved corner table overlooking the river. There is an extensive menu and excellent wine list. One the first night we had the lobster which was beautiful but larger than we required after our starters so on the second night we each had two starters. The house champagne is excellent, they have a very good viognier which really suited the lobster and the shiraz was an excellent choice for a red wine. A beautiful setting, immaculate service and fine cuisine. We will go again.

Any apprehension we felt at staying in a hotel in virus-time vanished as we arrived at Maison Talbooth. We were greeted warmly but safely and the staff were unobtrusive but available, and charming, all through our stay. 3 nights is ideal, given that Le Talbooth and Millsom's, both terrific restaurants, are just round the corner. The hotel itself is just lovely. We had a large, light room overlooking the pretty grounds, and the breakfasts were delicious. Warm croissants! First and foremost, Maison Talbooth is a hotel and spa. It serves afternoon tea but not dinners - diners who are reviewing dinners are probably referring to its sister site "Le Talbooth" based a minute or two up the road.As a hotel, this place is absolutely fantastic. Reopening in the wake of COVID, the hotel has been cleaned top to bottom and made COVID secure with clear social distancing signage, sanitisation stations, and distanced seating in public areas. The rooms remain beautifully appointed with even the most basic rooms feeling luxurious and well worth staying in - the more premium rooms are even more spectacular and are all very different (so staying many times is a must if you live nearby!).The poolhouse is where we spent most of our time during our stay. There are comfy sunbeds next to the large heated pool and hot-tub. We saw the pool area being cleaned regularly and the pool maintained well during our 3 night stay. The poolhouse has an honesty bar for soft and alcoholic drinks and you can help yourself to free tea and coffee too. There's a log fire too for cold evenings. Plus, there's a well maintained tennis court as well as racquets and balls you can borrow. The staff are incredibly friendly and are taking guest health very seriously. Theres an option for how frequently/if at all you'd like your room visited by housekeeping, and the car which takes you to dinner at either of the two nearby "Milsom's" owned restaurants is completely sanitised between trips.

I have just returned from having afternoon tea at Maison Talbooth with a close friend as an early Christmas treat.I myself am gluten free so had requested a gluten free tea.Unfortunately I was very disappointed. My sandwich choice that I was given was only cheese and chutney and ham and watercress. I asked why I did not have the same selection as my friend. I was told that the cranberry sauce contained gluten but was then brought a salmon sandwich and a cream cheese one.I had to return the scone as it was raw in the middle and very hard . It was replaced with another scone that we could not even cut in half and was rock hard. The waitress replaced it with some more chocolate brownies. They were completely different to the brownie I already had , different consistency and had white chocolate inside. After two mouthfuls I stopped eating as Both my friend and I were not convinced they were gluten free. By this time having already raised 3 issues I did not want to go looking for the waitress again.Since returning home I have been unwell, experiencing the same symptoms I have when I eat gluten.Unfortunately this experience has greatly disappointed me and I don’t feel that I can recommend afternoon tea here for anyone with allergies or intolerances.

I took my mum for afternoon tea here as a special treat. It was her first time and she was very much looking forward to it. You have to book afternoon tea, and it did look like several couples arrived all around the same time- however- the hotel would have known this in advance. My main reason for saying it was disappointing was the service. The food was quite nice. One cake was dry but overall it was nice. After we had been shown to our table we had to wait a long while for any service. Even my mum who never complains said “the service is not very good here”. She asked for a sweet sherry. The girl serving said they didn’t do a sweet sherry. I asked if she could go and look (and that’s what I would have expected her to say in the first place) and she came back and they did have it. This happened again at the end of the meal- my mum asked for a drambuie- a different girl said we don’t have that- again I asked her to check and she came back saying they did have it. Then I had told them when I booked that I only eat chicken, turkey and fish. (No beef, pork or lamb)They brought out a ham sandwich for me and a pork sausage roll! They did go and get me something else- but what was the point of them asking at booking! The afternoon tea cost £65 with the addition of my mums 2 drinks- and I don’t think it’s worth this. I want to add that the girls who work there were all very polite and lovely- but the service was not what I would expect from maison talbooth (and I’ve eaten and stayed at all their establishments) for many years. A disappointing treat for my mum.

Stayed for a two night Spa break with my husband. We ve been before and loved it so much we decided to go back ... before our little baby granddaughter’s forthcoming open heart surgery at Gt Ormond Street ... and we really did relax and gain strength for what’s to come . We had lunch at Milsom’s before we checked in to Maison Talbooth .. enjoyed a sharing platter and a glass of Sauvignon. Our roomwas Shakespeare which was huge with the large bath and separate shower. We enjoyed a visit to the pool house .. sadly the boiler had a fault so the pool wasn’t warm enough for me ! But met some nice people to chat to there as we sat by the fire with a drink from the honesty bar. We then had a lovely massage ( included in our package ) in the double treatment room. When we had got ready in the evening we enjoyed a glass of champagne whilst waiting for the slick BMW to take us back to Milsoms for supper . Which was faultless . Fast forwarding we enjoyed our second treatment Friday afternoon ( facials ) and then ate our dinner at Le Talbooth which was a wonderful experience . Breakfast on both days was absolutely gorgeous and the thing that stands out most is the staff. The previous manager had moved back to New Zealand and now there is a female manager and mostly female staff at Maison Talbooth and boy did they look after us. Thank you lovely Danielle you were amazing nothing too much trouble as Jasmine you too. Shannon we did not see you as much .. apart from the ride to Le Talbooth but thanks to you too ! There is a choice of lunch menu with 3/4 choices per course for £30 something (for 2 courses) or a la carte which is more. The wine list is extensive and you are highly likely to dramatically increase your bill here. Two of our party also enjoyed the tasting “flights” of desert wines. We would have liked some more tea but there was no member of staff to ask, It seemed what you were served was all you got. When we had finished & after a long wait I had to go looking for a member of staff to pay our bill. My wife and I were given the gift of afternoon tea at Maison Talbooth. It was a champagne tea with sandwiches and cakes etc and turned out to be most pleasant. The hotel itself is a lovely building surrounded by a pleasant garden all set in wonderful countryside. The staff were pleasant, efficient and helpful and after our champagne they served up a very pleasant afternoon tea which consisted of a mixture of delicate salmon, ham, egg and cheese finger sandwiches, followed by scones with ample servings of locally produced strawberry jam and thick whipped cream. The biggest surprise however was the actual tea. There were 22 teas to choose from, each served in its own teapot and each had a recommended time to infuse. To measure the infusion time they came with an egg timer, sized exactly so the desired time was accurately measured. My Sapphire Earl Grey was a delight. We will return for sure.

What I can never understand is why such lovely hotels/restaurants do not place a nice covering i.e tablecloth or even a nice paper one yet supply linen type napkins. Admittedly the setting is super but £20 + for 4 tiny finger sandwiches, a scone and four bite sized cakes was steep by anybodies standards. Oh I missed out the speciality tea with its theatrical egg timers; but it was still not good value. Was really looking forward to my first visit to Maison Talbooth but the afternoon tea was very disappointing. There was a lack of attention that I have not experienced anywhere else, we were a large party but why take the booking if you cannot cope with it? Some people at one end of the table had to have their sandwiches etc passed down to them on plates as the food was not distributed evenly. We had to ask for tea, the scones were the best part, but the cakes uninspiring, and the waitress was very put out when we asked for extra tea, hot water and jam, telling us she was "rushed off her feet". Staff very helpful. Lovely setting, great size bedroom and bathroom. It is like a country house with lovely views of Constable country. It has a spa. It is expensive. We stayed at Milsoms just up the road and the reception was at Le Talbooth. All part of the same group, but this venue could not seat our reception numbers, only reason why we did not use it.

We stayed at Maison Talbooth last week and found that they were celebrating 65 years of Le Talbooth. We stayed in the hotel itself for B&B; and were ferried (if you can say thank about a Range Rover) to Le Talbooth in the evening for a 4 course tasting menu for £65 per head including excellent paired wines.

My partner and myself have visited this restaurant on four occasions now and will definitely be returning in the near future. I found the service and food excellent. We booked early tables each time and was there for the whole evening, there was no feeling of being rushed and the staff were very attentive but not intrusive

Enjoyed a lovely sunday lunch with friends at The Talbooth - really nice atmosphere in the hotel building and fabulous gardens to enjoy if dining outside, with patio heaters to keep you warm too...Easy ordering system using a notepad provided at the table, and then order at the bar - pay there at the end too.Top quality food from a good menu with a daily specials board too - will definitely be going again!

Greatly enjoyed a very good English Afternoon Tea here on Monday 2 October with my wife and two good friends! We sat in the very comfortable Garden Room with lovely views over the Dedham Vale. The food, various sandwiches, an interesting and imaginative cake selection plus scones, clotted cream and jam was excellent! The tea selection was wide and varied and included a lovely chocolate and vanilla flavoured option. The service was friendly and efficient. In fact all the staff we met including the lady in the small reception room were friendly and helpful. Would we come here again sometime for another afternoon tea? Yes, most definitely!

The whole weekend was superb. The room was excellent together with the food wine and service. The pool and hot tub was enjoyed by my wife. Afternoon tea was very very filling. We even got driven to The Talbooth for dinner. Overall a great way to spend our anniversary

I attended a spa day here with friends. We booked a massage, afternoon tea and use of the pool house. We couldn't believe how amazing it was and really good value for money. We also ordered a sharing platter while we were there which I would defiantly recommend.

13 of us visited earlier this month for a Afternoon Tea for my friend's hen do. My friend thought she'd booked Le Tolbooth as this is who she called and was told about the boats available for hire on the river after our food. Turns out there are 3 Milsoms buildings within no more than a mile! It was all very confusing but eventually we all managed to find the right place! Considering this is an upmarket place and it was a special occasion we didn't get much of a welcome from any staff members. One person pointed us to the room we were in and then the drinks menus were left on the table. Once our drink orders were taken that was pretty much the last we saw of any staff members other than to bring the drinks and the food. We realised that we were short by one of everything for one person and had to chase this up and had to go looking for a staff member to sort this. The food was ok. The scones were nice but there wasn't enough clotted cream or jam. The mini cupcake/muffins were dry like they'd be left out for a while. I didn't think it was worth £21.50 and glad I didn't pay the extra £10.50 for a glass of champagne, especially when you could get a glass of prosecco for less than £8. The setting was lovely but there was no atmosphere and nothing to make anyone feel special. Another party were coming in from 4:30pm but the staff didn't really say anything until just before this time when the other party were turning up. Thought it was a lot of money for a poor atmosphere and food. There's definitely better places offering afternoon tea in the area.

As another reviewer has said it is all just a little average; in these times eateries have to up their game even if their restaurant is in a very beautiful position. The house - for it is an old house - really could do with some TLC as it just doesn't look clean, the bedrooms look dated and do not have the high quality finish I would expect for the price. It all just looks tired. The staff worked hard but upon finishing our afternoon tea it was difficult to get staff attention or work out what to do/where to go.The actual 'tea' part of the afternoon tea was very nice, and the tea is unlimited and you can change between varieties, which is nice. I do feel though for £20 the cakes and sandwiches just weren't "enough", not in quantity but definitely in quality. After a while everything blended in together. Quite disappointing based on the setting and first impression- also felt sorry for the staff as they did work hard.

We went here with my parents and to be honest was very disappointed. Not very tasty and not good value for money. 4 finger sandwiches each with some very strange fillings. All pretty tasteless. Small scone each which was just OK, had better anywhere else, Tiptree jam factory scones are heads and shoulders above these. 5 tiny little cakes. Nice cup of tea though and stunning place although we were plagued with flies. Have definitely had better, very disappointing, won't return. Gave 3 stars, 1 for the tea, 1 for the staff and 1 for the actual place.

Our first challenge was finding the right place to go. There are three Talbooth/Milsoms restaurants/hotels in the area so it is easy to get them confused. We sat outside for our afternoon tea and the views across the Dedham valley were magnificent. Service was good and the tea itself was also very good. The sandwiches were delicious (I would prefer more sandwiches though) the scones equally delicious and the cakes nice but not as nice as the sandwiches & the scones.

Having longed to eat at "Le Talbooth" for the past 30 years, but with it being a bit out of our price range, we decided to book afternoon tea at "Maison Talbooth" to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We booked well in advance for Champagne afternoon tea, and had very high expectations for this experience.Getting to Maison Talbooth was our first issue. I knew where "Le Talbooth" was, but we had issues finding "Maison Talbooth". We ended up parked in the car park of "Milsoms", phoning "Maison Talbooth" for directions. Our initial call to Maison Talbooth rang out unanswered, and our second attempt took ages before someone took the call. With directions obtained, we set off again to find "Maison Talbooth".From the outside, the hotel looks beautiful, and the grounds are absolutely immaculate. Our afternoon tea was served in a room in the hotel that it can only be said had the ambiance of a cafe!Wooden tables, no tablecloths, no flowers, dark unwelcoming room with drab colours on the walls, very little natural light and no easy listening background music. Certainly not what we were expecting. There was a menu of teas on the table from which we both selected. Nowhere in the menu did it mention that coffee was an option, and neither were we offered it as an alternative by our waiting staff. My wife would definitely have preferred coffee, given a choice! When we booked, my wife mentioned that one of us didn't eat seafood. When the afternoon tea platter came up, there was a selection of finger sandwiches, but only one finger of smoked salmon. When we questioned this, we were told that one guest didn't want seafood! Given that the sandwiches served were ham, egg mayo, cucumber and salmon, there was plenty of selection there for a non-fish eater, which would have allowed the salmon eater to manage two fingers. We're hardly talking a lot of food here............Even then, when we queried this, they brought out two extra ham ones - no more salmon! Then we had a group of ladies take seats behind us, who were having quite a loud business lunch. Then two young girls with crying babies in prams sat down next to us. Hardly a nice relaxing environment in which to celebrate our anniversary! We had to ask for our champagne, as this was not offered, even though the booking was made for champagne afternoon tea.Eventually, we could stand no more of the room we were in. We asked for our cakes to be boxed up, and moved out to a garden table on the terrace. We finished our drinks here, and asked to see the manager to discuss our experience. The manager was very professional and understanding, and we left feeling that she had listened to us and had agreed with our comments.Such a shame, as the venue is in a lovely location, and afternoon tea here could be a wonderful experience. As a couple who really enjoy afternoon tea, we would say that this is overpriced for the experience and we've had much better elsewhere. If you're expecting the ambience of "Le Talbooth", then this isn't the place for you.......

A beautiful sunny summer's day and afternoon tea on the terrace. What could be more English? The choice of tea was extensive, the sandwiches (egg and cress, smoked salmon, minted cucumber, ham or prawns for the non-meat eaters) were excellent, the fruit scones crumbly and delicious held together by clotted cream and strawberry jam and then five different cakes. It was all very good. The champagne as chilled and excellent. With a more savoury than sweet taste we would have prefered more finger sandwiches and fewer cakes but then we were given a "doggy bag" to take home those cakes which we could not eat at the time.Plenty of space for parking but you have to be alert not to drive past the restaurant, the signs are not too obvious. The staff are very friendly, the place settings are immaculate and the linen napkins large!

Went to Maison Talbooth for afternoon tea. What a dissapoinment! Booked it but when we arrived they didn't have us booked in. To be fair they found us a table quite quickly. Must say we were expecting better service. Tea pots and milk jugs that don't pour, which is probably why you don't need a table cloth either! Group of young twenty something women thinking it appropriate to celebrate some upcoming event with the curious mix of afternoon tea and the exchange of adult toys ! Book Hintlesham Hall !

We were staying at Milsoms, the partner hotel where the restaurant is less formal. As this was a special occasion we had booked dinner at Maison Talbooth. We were not disappointed. A car collected us from Milsoms and transported us the very short distance. We opted to go straight to our table rather than starting in the bar. As there were 6 of us we were given a large circular table in the very attractive dining room. The tables there are well spaced out so there is no feeling of being too close to other diners. The menu is an extensive one and the food was delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were excellent - attentive and friendly but not in the least bit intrusive. At the end of the meal when our coffees and teas arrived I was presented with a beautiful birthday cake. Unfortunately we were all too full so the staff took it away and wrapped it in foil which they shaped into a bird. While we were waiting for the car to collect us for the return to Milsoms we were given a tour of the newly refurbished kitchens by the excellent restaurant manager. She has only recently been promoted to manager and we were very impressed. There was a delay in the car arriving so she arranged for us to be taken to the bar and given a glass of champagne while we were waiting. All in all a wonderful evening.

Our stay here was as relaxing as the first time we stayed. This time we stayed in the Brooke room, which was extremely comfortable. We arrived early afternoon and had afternoon tea. My Granddaughter is vegan and her array of vegan delights were amazing, well done to the chef. We did give plenty of notice for this requirement. Breakfast has an extensive choice and most enjoyable. The hotel runs a courtesy car to their other establishments, Milsoms or LaTalbooth for dinner. The service is very friendly and professional.

We stayed in the maison in the Shakespeare's room and it was honestly the best hotel room we have ever stayed in. The room was absolutely stunning. The bed was very comfortable and had plenty of space for us both. The bathroom was breathtaking with a beautiful bath in the middle which was very relaxing. We decided to take advantage of the facilities and use the hot tub. The member of staff that took us down was very attentive and showed exactly how everything works. The hot tub was gorgeous at a beautiful temperature. We could have stayed in there all night. We decided to have breakfast in bed the next day and this was absolutely no problem for the staff. They came to us in good time and the meal was delicious. I don't eat meat and that wasn't a problem either. They couldn't have done more for us. I was very happy with the experience in this hotel and I would highly recommend it!!

We had the most wonderful afternoon tea here today. The views from the restaurant are wonderful and we were given a table outside in the shade which was perfect. The sandwiches are delicious - different flavoured breads with super-fresh fillings. The scones were among some of the best I have ever tasted (and that is saying something!) and were still warm, and the selection of cakes was generous, delicious and had my children's eyes popping out! The range of teas was impressive too. All in all expensive but worth every penny. We will be back!

I took my mum for High Tea as treat as I was visiting for a week, we booked in for 2pm High Tea, one a gluten free.We arrived ontime and waited for a member of staff to appear to seat us. When we were finally seated it took until 2.30 for our order to be taken. We were desperate for a drink but as the staff were elusive we had to just sit and wait. We then had to wait another 20 minutes for the tea to come out and a further 15 minutes for the food. We were given a tea refill with no milk so waited another 20 minutes until a member of staff appeared so we could drink the now lukewarm tea. Please don't get me wrong the staff were lovely, polite, there just wasn't enough of them. They seemed to be dealing with all areas. The gluten free scone was lovely, unfortunately the cakes were the same recipes with a different fruit in them x 4. The gluten range was diverse and my mother said were delicious. So to sum it up, we paid £39 for two people for tea, even though on the website it is advertised as £15, we stayed an hour and half and ended up leaving. We were highly disappointed, I expected more !Mother and daughter quality time ruined. Like I have said in my title save your money. Other places offer better for less money.

Managed to snag an outside table with a view of the castle. The chai latte had real depth of flavour and the cappuccino was good. My felafel salad was very good and the felafel were moist instead of dry like in most places. My partners chicken and bacon sandwich was generously filled and all at a very reasonable price. We’d deff go back here when next in Colchester.

Popped in after a visit to the dentists, hoping to grab some breakfast, but I was too late as it was 12pm. However, the lovely staff member did me a strong black coffee (very tasty, strong without being too bitter), offered me some toast and tried to cater to my gluten free diet, and later on returned with a packet of GF crisps as they had finished breakfast time. Very thoughtful service, and the sofas at the front of the shop are extremely comfortable, I did not want to leave.
