Mai Thai Restaurant at Hobbs Pavillion in Cambridge

Went to the Mai Thai Restaurant yesterday by chance as it was raining so heavy. When first went in we was only going to have a drink but the food looked good. We only had 3 starters for lunch between us and it was the best Thai we have had. Staff was really friendly and polite. Thank you for a lovely meal

The soups are pretty good, the service is really friendly and it is the perfect place for a family evening.

Went for lunch on a dismal rainy day but was made very welcome. The food was very good and just how I like it. The restaurant area itself was fine but the toilets though clean enough were rather run-down. The taps wobbled about in the basin and the towel dispenser was held together with gaffer tape! Efficient staff member serving.

We had a brilliant time here, food was delicious; I’ve no knowledge of why this place has a low rating but we thoroughly enjoyed it and hope other people get the chance to enjoy it!

I ordered a delivery from here against my better judgement, as they have a bad food hygiene rating. The food was mediocre when it arrived and the thing I wanted the most was missing! I wouldn’t order from here again.

Realmente califico este lugar en estos días, solía ir a otra comida para llevar tailandesa en Cambridge pero, pagué 11 por un curry verde con solo pimientos y guisantes, no me malinterpreten, fue muy bueno, pero el Mai Thai da ¡obtienes más ingredientes por menos dinero y sabe igual de bueno! Y para los menores de 11 años obtienes arroz pegajoso en lugar de solo Jasmin al vapor. Gran lugar ?

Delivery was originally 7.10 pm, having ordered in JustEat at 6.15 pm but was then changed to 7.20 pm. Rang to ask where order was at 7.45 It eventually turned up at 8.05 pm!with no apology or offer to refund delivery fee. Food only just warm, not appetising at all.

Stumbled upon this place by accident and was so surprised! Lovely view, lovely staff, great food and the value for money can't be beaten! Definitely eat here!

Appalled by this restaurant - we have always visited and got takeaway from here and for New Years Eve we specifically drove to pick up a takeaway. Ordered £80 of food - when we drove back to Little Thetford they had left out all of the rice. Rang back to be told they would deliver to then receive a voicemail to say we are too far! Called to then be told that they would not refund the £12.50 we were owed for the rice as we paid by cash. We were told we had to pay by cash when we ordered as the card machine wasn't working! Apparently if we drive all the way to them they can give us our money back but otherwise tough they get to keep our money! Not sure if this restaurant has changed hands but this seems like a scam and I am absolutely appalled that we can not get our money back despite them being at fault. We are now spending new years eve without a meal and short changed. So disappointing for a restaurant that we have always valued very highly, I would think twice if you are visiting or ordeing food from here, especially takeaway, as they seem to have a lot of issues and seem unable to deal with issues immediately.

Abbiamo deciso di venire qui per sfuggire al “curry” servito nel nostro college, e devo dire che è stata una scelta abbastanza azzeccata! Il ristorante, lontano dal centro di Cambridge, non è per niente affollato. Siamo stati calorosamente accolti da una ragazza e abbiamo ricevuto il menù, sul quale spenderò due parole: ampia la scelta di piatti tailandesi, adatti anche a un palato vegetariano! Il servizio è molto veloce: in men che non si dica, sono arrivati i piatti che avevamo ordinato poco prima. Buonissima la pietanza a base di melanzane, gustosa e saporita. Complimenti allo chef, inoltre, per il piatto di tofu, succoso e invitante! Se vi trovate nei paraggi, fateci un salto!

I noticed mixed reviews so was a little hesitant in booking but need not have been. I think some people expect Michelin star food for a tenth of the cost which is ridiculous. I was pleasantly surprised and so pleased we booked here for a birthday celebration. The food was excellent and I'd say worth far more than the price charged which was very reasonable (especially with a Gourmet Society card). We went for the cheapest set menu and there was more than we could eat and a great selection with the Thai green curry being particularly good. The service could not be faulted and all the staff were very friendly. The atmosphere was pleasant and slightly unusual being in the old cricket pavilion overlooking Christ's Pieces Park. The décor and furniture was functional rather than exuberant, but this was fine especially given the incredible value. A little music may have added to the atmosphere, but that is a very minor, and my only, negative. To top it off we were presented with a complimentary birthday cake and bottle of bubbly. If you want good food at a reasonable price served by attentive staff, you won't go wrong booking Mai Thai.

We had a good evening despite having heard bad things about this restaurant. We had a lovely table over parkers piece which was lovely at night. The restaurant is decorated well and is clean. The food is lovely and full of taste. The young Thai waiters are keen to please and very helpful to the point that I would like to hear that they are paid and treated well. I hope the manager will respond on that. The hygiene rating of 2 could do better. But a lovely evening 2 minutes away from the crowds of Regents Street. Do not be put off by the bad reviews.

This has been there for years but we have never been. I am glad we finally decided to go. Its a very basic decorated restaurant on parkers piece in cambridge but we sat on a hot summers evening with the doors open on to the grass. The staff were attentive and friendky and even gave us a bottle of fizz on the house as it was a special occasion. Food was fabulous and we all had a mixture of the menu and everything tasted great ! I will definately be going again and recommend it to others. ! They even do takeaway and delivery .

Ordered a takeaway at 7.10 was told 45 minutes for delivery,it arrived at 8.40.Rude driver no apology just moaning he had too many other deliveries.To top it all off the food was COLD Will not be ordering again from here

Should have known as it was empy but I was short of time. Food was very poor lacking the expected Thai subtle mix of flavour all chilli and little else. AVOID!

The decor of the restaurant is nice and the location is great! But the food is no way near the best. The prawn crackers and cocnut rice were nice. But the chicken dish i had (unfortunately can't remember the name) was tasteless, had no seasoning and was very gelatinous. There are definitely better thai restaurants in Cambridge

I have often eaten in My Thai on visits to Cambridge. It is a pleasant simple low priced Thai restaurant with friendly staff made special by the views across Parkers Piece, the famous large common where students walk, play and have picnics. A nice Cambridge experience.

We ate in the restaurant Amazing food, the squid was amazing. The owners were friendly and even gave us free sparkling wine and a small birthday cake for my husbands birthday. I would definitely recommend.

Delivery driver rude and obnoxious , swearing and upset because he couldn't find address. Gave him 28 pounds for a 26 pound bill didn't offer change,last time and only time I will ue them, substandard food and 6 pound delivery fee.ate 5 bites before throwing in the bin

I love Thai food and I went there 3times already all is good will find time to go again ,I ordered the panag prawn and I got free prawn cracker this place is very generous

nice little restaurant staff were very friendly, food was well presented but some of the dishes were not 100% thai - i guess thats down to what is avaliable in UK at that time. but im being picky and i have the pleasure of eating thai food most days - but a great restaurant to try

Yo había estado aquí hace varios años y había sido un poco, pero me decepcionó estaba muy contento de que volví. Es un pequeño restaurante con vista delightfil Parker's Piece, el personal es encantador y la comida esta vez era muy buena. Tuvimos uno de los menús y los platos eran sabrosos, variados y coloridos. El menú más amplio es muy variada y la carta de vinos incluye vinos de Tailandia. La entrada está escondido, pero merece la pena descubrir.

Nos presentamos como un grupo de 10 y nos sentaron enseguida. El personal era muy agradable y dispuesto a asistir a la mesa s necesario. Nos decidimos por un menú para todos nosotros. (SetC), y la comida era deliciosa y coked perfectamente. teníamos 5 entradas seguido de sopa y luego 5 platos principales. Había un montón de vueltas y todo estaba delicioso. Mi única decepción fue que la carne estaba un poco dura.

Este es un restaurante comedor pero acabo de recoger un huevo de comida para llevar y curry verde recibido noddles servicio 5 estrellas lleno la mejor que he visto de llevar. El curry verde y parecía muy vía láctea probado picante es el mejor tailandés...

Fue agradable, nos atendieron con un nacional tailandés que también disfruta de la comida.

No hay lujos restaurante - decoración básica. Pero si te gusta la buena comida tailandesa, sin duda te gustará este lugar. Personal tailandés en trajes tradicionales y bastante claramente un Chef tailandés. Teníamos un menú, todo lo cual era absolutamente delicioso. Si no tienes ese gran apetito, recomiendo el pollo al curry verde.

We were visiting Cambridge to attend a concert and our daughter recommended this restaurant. It is centrally located near Parkers Piece and was easy to find. The staff were friendly and the restaurant was welcoming. We started with chicken satay , squid and a prawn dish and these were universally enjoyed . Moving on to the main courses I can recommend the Chow Mein noodles and the Rendang curry. Well cooked and beautifully flavoured. Will definitely visit again if we are in the area.

The colours and presentation were lovely. It truly has the best beef, lamb and king prawns served, I do like to try everything so my Cousin and I share our different starters and mains. The staff are so friendly and helpful. This must be the best Thai in cambridge.

Ordered from here. It was two hours late, cold, not correct (not a full order). They refused to provide a full refund and hung up on us twice. JustEat didn't help either.

Ordered via just eat. Delivered early which was nice but it was just a totally different dish to what I'd ordered.

For sizeable helpings, this is a not unreasonable Thai eatery. The food served, however, does not demonstrate the love of intriguing spices and intricately prepared recipes that characterise the best Thai food. Even Thai street food has definitive character -- and this eatery's food was simply so-so. It seemed as though this place, which has a fab location and building, had seen better times and was just earning its owners a living now.

I had not been to the Mai Thai for a while, and I went back on Saturday night. It is as good as ever. I went for the specials, with delicious marinated poultry on little cabbage canapés and a whole sea bass freshly cooked in banana leaves with beautiful fragrant lemon grass and a spicy, very aromatic sauce. The Monsoon white wine was excellent too. The atmosphere was great and the staff, friendly, what more could you want! Great for a romantic dinner and equally brilliant for a large group of friends.I you go earlier in the day time, you'll see the view on Parker's Piece, really beautiful.

This place is just such a disappointment. First the positives: the food is OK - although the Tom Yum was the worst we have ever had - and the location overlooking the common is great. However it was empty at 20.00 on a Sunday, and a little closer inspection reveals why. The decor is railway station chic -dirty floors, bright light, metal and glass tables - all of which is an unfair comparison to half decent railway station. Fork and spoon - no chopsticks, and they don't take Amex...The staff are nice and try to be pleasant - but the ambience is dismal - we had to ask for the music to be turned on. The food though is way overpriced for what it is at best average Thai food. We will not be back - and we love Thai food

I ordered Ka Nom Jeeb (Thai Dim Sum). Gaeng Pha : Chicken and Pla Muk Tord (squid Fritter).Dim Sum tasteless, squid fritter soggy and tasteless and the chicken curry consisted of small bits of undercooked chicken breast with broccoli and cauliflower swimming in a tasteless broth.

This place is well located and provides good service and reasonable food. Portion size is decent but sadly not very exciting.

I visited with my wife and son on 25/8, the floor tiles were filthy as well as the chairs and menus. No other customers at 6.05pm, my wife said to me this place only has 3 hygiene stars, but I thought let's give it a go as I had walked past this iconic location many times in the one of the busiest thoroughfares in Cambridge. We ordered the mixed platter x 3 £6.95 total £20.85, this arrived and we were totally under whelmed as a show case dish we were disappointed with the appearance the carrot garnish were very dry, the chicken satay looked like it had the life sucked out of it, and was tough to eat, the parcel was burnt, Thai fish cake was very small, but the prawn toast was very nice. We asked for chilli oil and the waiter said they do not have this, unusual for a Thai restaurant. Reluctantly we ordered the mains no. 67 pad Thai noodle with prawns £10.50 no 71 Pad Mee chow mien with prawn £10.50 and no 69 Pad Mee mai Thai with chicken £9.95.All Tasteless dishes, looked flat and had very minimal meat and prawns. We again asked for chilli oil he managed to find some and said this was chilli with fish oil. Total bill was £51.80 but during 6pm to 7pm is 30% off, paid £38.76. I was so embarrassed I took my family here, thank god I did not take any friends with me, I would have not been very popular. Never again, get rid of the chef and clean your restaurant. Even the staff looked like they couldn't be bothered.

At 19 o clock on Sunday the restaurant was empty. We were 4 friends and we took a seat on a table with park view. Beautiful.On every table there was a wooden cup full of chips, like the Chinese shrimp chips, not bad, but the cup was dirty and sticky.I have ordered one PAD SI-EIW (Stir fried noodles with vegetables & egg in soy sauce). When it was arriving, the smell of the sauce on the noodles was awful, but luckily the taste was really good.My friend ordered grilled chicken and something with duck but I don't remember the dishes' names, I can only say that they were happy about it. The rice they offer as a side dish is not for free: surprise! 3 extra pounds on the bill.At the end, they tried to add to our bill also a beer and a bottle of water that we didn't order.During 1 hour of dinner, only one couple has entered to eat in but we have seen a lot of people taking away the food, so, probably it is a take away restaurant and eat in the park :)

I visited the restaurant with 3 friends on Saturday night. We had a mixed tray of starters which were great, and all ordered sea bass for the mains. Absolutely fantastic. The guys had theirs fried ,and I had mine steamed. Presentation was great , and the blend of spices were spot on. Can't wait to go again and try something else.

I visited this restaurant with a friend and we decided to order something other than a Phad Thai for a change. The table had complimentary (I think? My friend paid!) crackers, which were tasty and not at all oily, and we were brought water while we decided on which dishes to try.We ended up having a couple of starters (satay, fish cakes), which were a little pricey considering their size, however they were cooked really well. For our mains, we shared a really flavoursome duck dish with some sauteed vegetables, egg fried rice and a lovely mild peanut curry - absolutely delicious! Not at all what I would typically order, but definitely worth it.Staff were cheerful and friendly, even if the male server was somewhat inattentive and more interested in his mobile phone.

We decided to have dinner at Mai Thai which is located within five minutes walking distance from Pinnacle Apartments where we stayed. We liiked our food - chi chu pla, fishcakes and som tam salad - the spiciest food I have ever had in my life. Very tasty! The service was very good. I was only annoyed by the very, very loud young guests that came in when we were dining. But it was not the restaurant`s fault.

Gorgeous food. the best red Thai curry in Cambridge and I've tried a few. Starters a little prices for the size but am sure that could be tweaked. Overall fanatastic

Far below even the most average Thai food anyone would have ever eaten. Insipid, unimaginative and flavourless dishes.

My Mrs is a known top notch Thai chef, this was her choice of restaurant to visit in Cambridge and she chose well. Overlooking Parkers Piece in central Cambridge, Mai Thai occupies the building that cricket fans and historians will know as Hobbs Pavilion. It's great to see a piece of history being used rather than languishing into disrepair and decay.The service was exactly how we like it, informative, prompt, attentive but never intrusive.Now the food I believe that if God wants a personal chef in the future it will be either my wife of the chef at Mai Thai. Astonishing quality, generous, but not wasteful portions and REAL, GENUINE Shigha (pronounced Sing) bottled beer. So staff, service and food I cannot fault at all.The tables and chairs are begining to look a little shabby and the terazzo floor looks like it needs a damned good machine polish. However, this no way detracts from the main event. Many MANY thanks to all the guys n girls at Mai Thai.

We went for a pre concert evening meal.The location is nice over looking the park but as some other reviews say the decor looks in need of a tidy up.The service was good and quite fast, our server was attentive and quietly friendly.The food was tasty although drinks were quite expensive.We find thai food on average quite expensive wherever we go in the UK so this restaurant no different.We would return.

Been here several times before but not recently. The food was excellent and the staff lovely, however the restaurant itself really needs a deep clean and refurbish. The table we were at had a steel pedestal, glass top with a metal plate on should have been on top to hide the screws. This was missing and the pedestal looked like it hadn't been cleaned for some time. This spurred me to look around. The other tables could have done with a clean down the pedestal as well. We were by the window and looking down the skirtings hadn't been cleaned for a while, there were cracked floor tiles and there were cracks in the plaster on the support beams from the floor to ceiling. It was a shame because as I said, the food was excellent but they need to upgrade the place. Was a bit worried about the cleanliness elsewhere as well. A great disappointment as standards seem to have slipped.

A group of 7 didn't cause any problems to the staff. The restaurant was very quiet as they had advised us to change the time of our booking as a large party of students had booked there also.I have not had a lot of Thai food but this was very tasty, good and hot and a decent portion. Service was fast and helpful waitress brought us a jug of water.We would go back again.

We found this place quite by chance as it is not very visible tucked away as it is with enormous building works taking place next door. For a Saturday night, albeit in January, the place was relatively deserted. I am always wary in these kinds of places where my tendency is to order too much food and then trying to consume it all. So for the two of us we ordered a shared platter for two for starters and just a single main meal with rice. As it turned out we just about managed to eat it all; anything more and it would have been a waste. Depends on your appetite I suppose. The menu was easy to follow and the food itself was as interesting as it was tasty as well as spicy. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and enjoyed the experience.I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Having had so much good This food in Australia where I lived for many years this is a huge disappointment. I think the location and decor allows for very mediocre food.Thai food relies on colour, fragrance and freshness. It should be light and exquisite! There is NO excuse for frozen peas in anything.

Terrible, just really really bad. Fatty oily rubbish. Don't bother - warm up some soup instead. Nice people..but they don't really help. Wine does though.

Basically poor quality food, bad service and rewarded with an expensive bill. Staff talk in their own language to each other which is off putting.

Excellent, attentive service. Food a plenty, of good quality, and promptly delivered. Definitely worth a visit if you were in that part of the city.

The atmosphere was very relax and the staff were very attentive. The food was tasty and hot. It was served very quckly - we were the only people in the restaurant at the time but it was alovely experience.

Originally chose Mai Thai for its close proximity to the Picturehouse. We let them know we were aiming to catch a film and we were in and out in an hour! Service was quick food was good - authentic and delicious! I would recommend if you need somewhere good to grab a good bite to eat before going on to do something else in the city.

Really quick delivery and they were able to modify a meal as per an order note. Best Pad Thai in town, always good food and service.

Well found this place by chance and overall the location had a great view but a shame about the food, the starters was stodgy for both of us, and my partner she could not even eat hers, I can eat pretty much anything but it seemed like last nights dinner mashed together and heated up, this was not fresh in anyway way. The staff were friendly enough but the food terrible and when the lady asked if everything was ok I did say no it was not and explained and she said sorry ???, I am not a pickey eater and was hoping for some sort of refund due to the meals being untouched but no £26.00 later for a dreadful untouched starters and meal, DO NOT GO LUNCHTIMES, And forgot no table clothes, or clean napkins.

Good quality but small portions

Tom yum soup wasn't great, lacked spice and flavour. Asked for no mushrooms in my pad kra...there were lots of mushrooms. Disappointed and not really value for money.

One of my favourite things to do is to get take out from Mai Thai and sit on Parker's Piece. The food is always delicious and the prices are reasonable. Try the Lazy Duck and the squid. NOM!

I have read a few negative reviews of this restaurant and I think they are unfounded. We have been here several times and it has never disappointed. We took some friends who had never been before this time and they loved it. The service was good and the food beautifully prepared and plentiful. If we wanted the spices tweeking this was not a problem. The setting is lovely and will keep going back.

What can I say? There are good meals, great meals, and there is totally yummylicious! That is about the only word (and yes, it is a word!) that does justice to the food we enjoyed here.I had the lazy duck, don't know about lazy, more about melt in your mouth delicious! All of the courses were fantastic so I'd say worry not about what you order, you will struggle to find something you don't like!The service was great and the venue/location is fantastic too. All in all I'd say give this a try, you won't be disappointed.

A salutary terrible. Choi main with sour cauliflower and more veg than noodles. Never had anything like it. Then the squid...... £9 for 4 tiny pieces of squid swimming in murky water. Disgusting. NEVER AGAIN. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED FOR CHARGING ME £19.60

It was delicious - I love hot food and this surpassed our expectations. My partner doesn't like it so hot so as there are no red/amber/green warnings on the menu he was a little surprised by the warmth of our Pad Kra Prow!

Always disappointing when you pay for something and it isn't included. My veg tempura was left out and made what would have been a good service a bad one.

Pretty decent taste. Portions were adequate, but needed appetisers and a soup to make a meal. Food was nowhere near spicy enough. Portion of peanut sauce was sad.

Drove down to Cambridge to meet our daughter who was working marking papers.Haven't eaten out there for years so Googled for a Thai restaurantMai Thai came up, easy to find and lots of parking on the edge of Parkers Piece. And that's a miracle in the car hating city of dreams.Table by the window, two noisy large tables enjoying themselves.Lots of starters and a Larb Kai for me.Not the greatest food but very welcoming with charming service.There are no cheap Thai restaurants I like in the UK and this is not cheap. On a par with others in London.We will be back for the convenience of parking, the service and the freshness of the food. Glad my wife found it

If you are looking for a Thai restaurant that wouldn't be the one for me. The food was okay if you are looking for something cheap close to the city centre and with a nice views... Unless you are in a rush try something different!

Went for lunch and the only menu on offer was the cheap set lunch. I had chicken satay and tom yum soup noodles, both were ok for the price, but nothing to write home about. My husband made a poorer choice, as he had stodgy corn fritters followed by a chewy green curry with beef. Don't think we'll bother again, as we much prefer the Thai in Newnham.
