We came here for coffee and tea once. Since then every time we are in the area, we get some cakes to eat at home. This time lemon tart(again) and almond cake. Very nice and I will be definitely back!

I am addicted to croque-en-bouche and after consulting with a French friend of mine ordered one from Madeleine for a birthday party. I collected it today and I am pleased to report it is the best one I have ever tasted.

Visited late morning on a Sunday. It was quite busy, but they did have a corner table available right at the back. The rear is quite dull as it doesn't have windows, but there's adequate lighting.

We popped in here for something cooked but we lost track of time and didn't realise we had missed the breakfast which is served up to 2pm at the weekend. The staff were apologetic and explained that the chef had left. Instead we tried the courgette quiche and a baguette, plus freshly squeezed orange juice which was a bit pricey but came in a large measure. Then we tried a croissant, a madeleine cake, a little soft amaretti cake, which were all very good quality. There was a great selection of pastries and cakes to try in house or take away. The coffee was excellent. We liked the homely style of the cafe. There was a little confusion about what we had ordered and the lady who had served us said she was sorry and even gave us something complimentary by way of an apology. We felt that it was a nice way to show a customer that they are valued. All the staff were friendly. We will definitely go back again for the breakfast.

Had coffee and cake at Madeleine. Disappointing cakes - not bad but really not great at all, quite bland. We had to go out and get cash to pay: how can a cafe be cash only in 2017 in London?!Finally what really annoyed me was the dirty basement: sticky floor and stairs, an old dirty mop in the toilet, etc. It all felt greasy and dirty.

My friend Tania wanted to express how she felt about her special birthday night, and as my boyfriend and I enjoyed that night so much too we thought it best to complete a group review of Madeleine. The birthday girl said: 'I found my new favorite restaurant and venue in old town Clapham. I had my special birthday here on Saturday and all 27 of us greatly enjoyed the atmosphere, devine French food, and attentive service! Incredible on all 3 levels! I had met with the restaurant manager Laura on 3 occasions while organising my special dinner party, and also met with the chef to come up with a tailored menu that would be suitable for tastebuds and costs - they were so friendly and accommodating! The food was incredible on the day, perfection really! I had also asked Laura to work with the pastry chef to organise my birthday cake, and it was the most eye catching and delicious cake ever experienced! The service on the night was incredible, they made sure my guests were all looked after. The next night, all my friends sent messages through saying how incredible of a time they had at Madeleines from the amazing food, service, ambience, to how well we were treated. It was also very affordable which is important when you have a large group. I can not wait to go back, I'm a bit worried that i've let the secret out now of how incredible this restaurant is and it's all due to Laura the manager, the fantastic and friendly chef, his 2 chef assistants, talented pastry chef and the girl and guy that was our waitress/ waiter for the night. I'm looking forward to spending more time at my neighbourhood restaurant. My friends who are local and live in other areas can not wait to come back for an intimate dinner. Thank you for creating such an amazing evening for me and the incredible memories! To the owner of Madeleine - you have created a very strong team! Merci, x Tania We(friends of Birthday Girl Tania) said:This is the kind of place you come to, to feel at home and treated like a loved one. We were guests of the birthday girl. You know it is a slick yet personal service when the waiters and waitresses glide unseen between groups to make sure you are fully topped up, discreet and friendly, they serve food with a beaming smile of pride and all they care about is your experience. Our beautiful birthday girl spent quality time with her loved ones, instead of choreographing table service. What a wonderful night. Dare I say, Madeleine sets itself apart from the crowded Clapham offering?Especially our Mexican waitress extraordinaria ! x x x

This is a charming café where you could be forgiven for thinking you'd passed through a portal and been transported to a café in France! We have visited many times and witnessed several different layouts. We have always found the staff friendly and service and ambience delightful. Cash only is accepted which can be a chore, but hey, maybe that's a good throwback to the past! If you find yourself in Clapham, this is a must to visit.

There is plenty of choice for coffee in Clapham but this place has style. If you close your eyes and imagine yourself in a traditional French cafe in Provence then this would be the place (apart from the display of teapots). There is a wonderful selection of patisseries in the window which are even better to eat! I particularly recommend the strawberry tart. The coffee was also excellent although clearly this is a matter of taste. I found the staff friendly although they were not speaking French. Two coffees and a tart cost around £10.

Have frequented there a lot. However this morning Tues 28th i was for the third time overcharged by middle aged French woman working there. When i brought this to her attention, she replied in french saying, whatever. I told her I speak french and this was not good enough. She said you can to other coffee shops if you wish. My advice is to keep away from this place till they learn to be friendly. And always check your money!

A lovely cafe near Clapham Common tube station. Most of the people were speaking French as were the staff; my friend and I felt we were transported to France. Great selection of cakes and French pastries - could not decide but chose the pear and almond tart in the end. Also a wide choice of hot beverages to choose from to match your food . Just beware that they only accept cash in this cafe but there is a Barclays cash point near the tube station which is handy. Loved the mismatched China plates, cosy atmosphere and friendly staff and of course yummy food - all good factors for cosy catch ups with friends or family get togethers. A big thumbs up from me!

This spot is incredibly quaint. Decor is beautifully vintage and authentic to its French roots. Wonderful relaxed ambience and staff are friendly and attentive. Once again further proof that Clapham seems to have the best array of coffee shops in SW London (see also 2 Love Tea and Coffee House in Clapham junction). Why on earth did I ever leave? I actually fancied a tea rather than coffee and it was nice to see they had a good selection of those also. Highly recommend this spot if you're by Common.

So we went to Madeleine as recommended on Timeout London (top cafes in London). It is right by the Common, lovely location for a stroll afterwards. The cakes and pastries looked really nice. It felt like being in France inside! Service was excellent, lovely staff who went out of their way. However, not much for vegetarians on the menu if you want lunch. We ordered galettes (had never tried these before), they were OK, they seemed really popular so might be just me, but they were a bit bland. Crepes were better - they make their own salted caramel! I would go back again for cake and tea, but probably not for lunch.

What has happened and WHY ? I have been coming here for years and yes , the cakes are gorgeous and coffee / tea good too. Don't care too much about cash only- it's French ! However , gone are days of people watching on the common and watching the world go by. The counter and cakes now hog the best view and the cakes get the sunshine too ! It's now rather darkand gloomy inside . Please , pay some money and get a proper designer , it's really not working . Very sad and doesn't make sense to me !

Having just come from an extremely poor experience at a nearby restaurant in Clapham (see other review), my friends and I were greeted with warmth and a cheerful smile from all the waitresses. We ordered 2 portions of cakes ( for 3 of us) which was enough as the sizes are generous. The chocolate cake and lemon meringue pie are worth tasting. Absolutely decadent. Also one of the best hot chocolate drink I have had in a cafe. Ambience was good too. Probably if it was full might be different as tables are very close to each other to maximise space and profit no doubt. That being said i would highly recommend a visit to here, it's worth it. I want to try the crepes next time! Don't bother having an expensive dessert in a pub or restaurant in Clapham for £6+. Go here instead.

This is an unusual cafe by London standards. It is refreshingly UN-trendy, with old wooden fixtures and old mismatched porcelain. It is simple, and thoughtfully decorated with flowers and a long bar. The food is fantastic - The Danishes are superb and are authentically French, as are the macaroons. There is also a very good tea selection available served in a proper filter pot. It is popular in the mornings with the post-school crowd, and great for people-watching across Clapham Common.

Had breakfast here, with a coffee & a Ham & Cheese croissant ( toasted under the panini grill ) was divine. The girls had pain chocolat & hot chocolate which was just that - melted chocolate with hot milk which you whirl up yourself. Lots of herbal teas were on offer & the place has a slightly bohemian feel to it. Busy & popular, the place had a good buzz to it. Three drinks, 3 pain chocolat & 2 ham & cheese croissants were £21 + change.

For us cash strapped parents, it's now a new local favourite. Flavoursome French food, great place to watch the world going by and with BYOB, we can drink something delicious without the hideous mark up. And the cheese list...should be short listed for the Booker (I mean for the quality). My other half was relieved by the portion size and the fact it was really good traditional French food. I was paying, my turn and so totally smug (previous outing very expensive and very experimental). Owners really attentive and featured in Stuffocation (if you've read it)so extra thrill for me. I went after many years to this place with a group of friends to dance and listen to Latin music, when I arrived it is £10 the entrance was fine but when I went to the bar to buy my drink they charged me for the service charge every time I bought a drink!!!! How can it be possible for them to do that!! I understand that if they are serving you at the table, but in the BAR where many only enter to have a drink it is a ROBBERY
