Madeira Star in Lambeth

An absolute gem in London. Unpretentious and relaxing, this restaurant is a real treat. It's a family concern that gives a friendly genuine welcome. The menu is extensive and is vast from traditional English breakfast to virtually every combination of sandwich, pasta, rice or Madeiran sandwiches served on Madeiran flat bread or Carcaca Portuguese oval roll and sweet including superb Pastel de Nata. They also sell soft drinks, hot drinks, red or white wine and beer. However the truly amazing aspect of the Madeira Star are the prices, which for any city is cheap but for London outstanding. Do yourself a favour and if you're anywhere near Kennington get over to the Madeira Star. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Well done.

I sometimes use these guys to get some breakfast delivered when I'm working from home. The menu is pretty varied with some tasty options that you don't often see on a London breakfast menu such as Portuguese sandwiches. They do really nice, fluffy baked potatoes and even better, they're one of the few places around here to sell cans of Antarctica Guarana (a Brazilian soft drink) Delivery speed is more or less down to Just Eat's rider but when you have a decent rider, Madeira Star is one of the quicker delivery options too.

We have been visiting every Saturday morning for the past three months and have always had a positive experience. The staff are friendly and accommodating, remembering our order each time & the food is exceptionally good value. Would fully recommend.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a neighbour for quality, quantity, service and price. We walked 2 miles from our London hotel on a damp morning to follow up this recommendation. We were not disappointed. We were attended to instantly, order taken soon and food on the table in good time. Our breakfasts were excellent and set us up for the day. Great.

I have visited this cafe on numerous occasions and always find it excellent. Food is good value and tasty, there is quite a wide choice, staff are all friendly and attentive. As a previous review said it’s not fine dining or a greasy spoons cafe - somewhere in the middle and great for a casual breakfast or lunch.

Working close by, we decided on breakfast as one of our party had been here before. It is not fine dining, but not a greasy spoon either. It is just good, wholesome (albeit basic) food. Well cooked, nice sized portions, reasonably good produce. Staff attentive and friendly, reasonably quick service from order taken to food on the table. If you are a lover of a good old fashioned, satisfying breakfast, this is the place for you.

We booked a table for 20+ for a social work lunch and the café were extremely organised and served our food within 15 minutes of arriving. The staff were very accommodating of our requests and were both very friendly and efficient. We'll definitely be back.

Dropped in for breakfast (wide choice and great value) and really enjoyed it. Excellentt service and attention without being at all pushy. Lots of bustle at that time but I was left in peace to enjoy my coffee and read my paper.

Love this place it's always super busy at lunch time 12-2 queue expected. (Close early as well like 5/6). Everything from soup to salad, sandwiches, bagels to hot meals of rice and chicken or jacket potatoes. They take card have a sit in non- book area. They are friendly and serve everything! Always eating here.

Even though I live around the corner, I have never been here for lunch. The menu is extensive with lots of choice-sandwiches, baps, bagels, jacket potatoes and salads-there is something for everyone. All the fillings are fresh and really reasonable priced given the quality. I can see why the queue was out onto the street.

This is a small coffe shop/restaurant with good food with good price. I went there a few times and it's a nice place to have a quick meal. There is no parking space near so we used to go by bus.

Madeira Star is quite simply the most reliable restaurant in London. Its range of dishes, kind staff and comfortable chairs make it a home away from home. If you want a full-English with chips, don't go anywhere else. The paninis are also pretty good. Thank you darling.

I work in the area and go here a lot. There is so much choice on the menu and you can get a some good traditional Portuguese food. I like to pick from the Madeira Star Special menu. I go for the no 2, it's called Prego especial no pao. It's thin fried steak in a sandwich with ham and cheese. I also have fried onion on OMG - it's amazing! They do loads of the standard cooked breakfasts and general cafe food too. The omelette and chips is also s good shout. Watch out for big portions, you do get a large helping.

Todo sobre el Madeira estrellas es maravilloso. El personal, amable, las raciones son enormes y el precio es excepcional. El almuerzo por alrededor de £5 es inmejorable!

The Madeira Star staff are always fast and efficient and the food is delicious. I haven't tried the breakfast menu but every plate looks great. Good portions but maybe in the future the café could introduce a loyalty card scheme for their loyal 'Maddy' followers!

Nous sommes partis à Londres pour un court séjour avec des amis.Nous cherchions un restaurant correct pour passer la soirée.Le Madeira Star ne paye pas de mine, on n'y prête pas attention en marchant dans la rue.En entrant, nous avions demandé une table pour six (en anglais donc), et le restaurateur nous a répondu en français. Il nous a même charrié sur notre accent ;)Allez-y le gérant est sympathique et convivial.On se sent de suite à l'aise :)Bon restaurant-bar, où l'on mange copieusement, il y a des spécialités portugaises, il y a le choix en plats et boissons. Très bonne soirée, Pas de mauvaises surprises et les prix sont très corrects.J'y retournerai avec grand plaisir.

Whatever you have here, you will not leave hungry - portions are big, and food is good too. The £5 breakfast including hot drink can't beaten. Lunches are traditional English and Portuguese together with good freshly made sandwiches baguettes and Panini. Always has a lunchtime queue and very popular. Open from early morning to late afternoon, kitchen open all day.

From the outside, there is little that would entice the casual passer-by to enter this establishment. Inside, it looks like little more than a comfortable, slightly upmarket, 'workers' caf'. Do not be misled by appearances. This place serves everything from simple beverages to gourmet Portuguese dishes.Many of the customers enjoy well-prepared eggs and chips and other typical fried breakfast items. All of these look fresh and appetising. The central section of the place is devoted to sandwich making. The wide reange of mouthwatering ingredients look superbly fresh. The sandwiches that were being taken to eat elsewhere are generously filled and large.We ordered 'Liver Veneciano'. Tender fried liver with onions was served on a huge bed of rice. Even though the portion was supposed to be for a single diner, it would have satisfied two people easily. The 'Picado' which consisted of succulent cubes of beef in a delicious red wine sauce is supposed, according to the menu, to be made for two people, but the chef obligingly prepared a portion for one of us. Its size was more than ample. Coffee was excellent, as was the attentive service.Prices are extremely reasonable!
