Lumpini in Central Bedfordshire

I first tried this this place 17 years ago and was reluctant to go back and it's even worse than I remembered. Where do I begin, the place still looks dated, decor is dull and was extremely noisy, the poor waitress did her best but was struggling with the orders (probably because it was so noisy. I ordered my starter which was the deep fried vegetables with plum sauce but I didn't think they looked or tasted right and what actually came was Sweet Corn Cakes (that's what was on the bill as well), but thought I would give them a go, they were hot but had a horrible after taste, there was only a very small pot of sauce as well not entirely sure what it was but not that great. I had only just started eating the starter when mine and the rest of our parties mains were brought out. The mains in my option were brought out very quickly which leads me to suspect some of the dishes were pre-cooked. My main dish Pad Med Mamuang with chicken and cashew nuts, wasn’t that hot, the chicken was over cooked and the so called stir fried vegetables were swimming in a rather bland thin broth/sauce, couldn’t taste the pineapple. The coconut rice was very claggy, luke warm and barely a hint of coconut. Now we come to the bill, they brought the bills round and I was just about to present my card to the reader when there was a bit of commotion and the bill was taken out of my hand and all the bills taken back, no explanation initially given other than there was a problem although my bill looked correct. Five minutes later back came the bills this time with a 10 percent service charge added. It admittedly does say on their website for parties of 6 or over that this charge will be added however I think it’s poor customer service in my opinion to charge a service charge in the first place but to then ask for the bills back just as we were about to pay is a bit rude. I did not leave a tip, will not be recommending this place to any of my friends and will definitely not be going back if they are still in business in another 17 years time.

Right from the start they set a high standard with their menu, there were so many items marked gluten free, that I had a good selection of starters and mains to select from plus they had a clear with picture. I had the king prawn Pad Se-Ew Stir fry flat noodles and vegetables. My friend had the chicken massamun curry with rice. We both enjoyed our meals which came out in a reasonable. I was pleased to see my favourite salt and pepper squid available gluten free, I couldn’t leave without a plate of that; they get an extra bonus point from me for having it gluten free. It was nice and crunchy however my preference would be to add more salt and spice. I spoke tono a few members of staff, (I’m a chatty person) they all held a short conversation with me which added to a great experience.

Excellent, tasty food. Warm welcome from staff. Dishes can be mild or spicy. All cooked, freshly to order. The coconut rice was the best I e ever eaten. Highly recommend this restaurant 😋 .

Traditional Thai restaurant with authentic decor. Felt like eating abroad which added to the experience rather than eating at a polished chain restaurant. Food was excellent, I would recommend the dumpling starter

Absolutely amazing food. Ordered takeout before but never ate in. The atmosphere was great, the service was outstanding and very quick. Staff very friendly. Couldn't recommend enough.

The food, as usual, was first class. Our Tom Kha soup was amongst the best we have had. I like mine medium heat. My wife had the papaya salad. She chose medium heat but will order mild next time. My Seabass main with tamarind and sticky rice was also delicious. Hope to return soon.

Most enjoyable evening. The restaurant was very busy but the service was excellent and the food superb. The best meal I’ve had out this year. Will definitely recommend

Food never disappoints. Weeping tiger, chicken, beef in ginger and spring onions and mix starters. Haddock and Seabass is also good. I've been going to this restaurant for over 15 years. 5 stars.

Lovely restaurant food Is excellent good potion size too, staff very friendly and your not rushed which we like as it’s nice to relax over a good meal and have a drink when with friends.

Really poor now! Used to be great. Quality of food is poor and clearly no longer freshly produced or rushed. Beef Massamun was dry and hard. Prawn crackers stale and everything just a lot more bland than it used to be. Poor show. Go somewhere else.

obliging staff, lovely food sensible prices

We had a table of 15 for my husbands birthday last Friday and I have to say we had such a good experience (as I always do there). The service was fantastic especially for such a large table) and they brought out separate bills for each couple/person to make it easier. Food was amazing - Highly recommend.

We had the special gourmet type menu available on Sundays £19.95 each I think. Not sure of other days. So much food. 2 starters each, 2 mains each, rice & noodles each!! Tasty, hot in temperature and nicely presented. Restaurant itself not much ambience. Would return.

If I could give 100 stars I would. I'm a big foodie, and I love Thai. Lumpini...surpasses any Thai in South Bedfordshire. Large menu, with great selection....main meals come in a choice of mild, medium, or hot. Fabulous and great value for money.

Amazing Thai food and restaurant! Had the sharing starter plate for 2 and the Thai Green Curry for mains. The Thai Green Curry was so good, definitely will have that again from there!

Unfortunately this was not a good food experience. The service was pleasant enough but the food was more akin to over cooked Chinese. The peanut satay was very watery. Much of the food overly oily or smothered in too much sauce. And I came here as it was recommended to me by several people. It had just opened at 17.30 and the speed of the delivery of the food suggested a lack of attentiveness in the cooking. Vegetable fried rice didn't taste fresh on the day more like a rehash of food from the day before. I was looking forward to vegetable dumplings as invariably Thai tends to offer only meat or fish dumplings these were again gooey and lacking in distinctive taste. Sometimes a restaurant only needs one stand out item to bring people in, the vegetable dumpling could be it, but not here. Maybe I was unlucky but too much was too bland and uninspiring to want me to return.

Still good! Tasty Thai food and excellent service here. Definitely recommended 😊

Lumpini is constantly brilliant.

Reason I have ordered take away dinner was that they offered plastic cutlery. I was moving home and had nothing left, no utensils at all. I have expected them with my order but they did not arrive. I had food but no option to eat it. I called restaurant but they did not solve problem I have been asked to come and collect them! If I could come I would eat in restaurant or pick up food instead of ordering delivery. not nice experience with this restaurant

Fresh food and well cooked and tastes nice

Fantastic Thai restaurant. Food and service are second to none. If you want a great Thai food experience, look no further.

Mostly nice food, the green curry was delicious but the chicken inside was too tough (overcooked) sadly. Also the dessert wasn't fresh at all, I couldn't eat it all because the outside was hard and not smooth and creamy like a cheesecake should be. The staff were great.

Loved the food, service was good but really didn't like sitting so close to the table next to us. It was that close that you were touching. The tables coukd do with being more spaced apart. That was the only thing I felt uncomfortable about.

The food was great as usual ,we had a party of 8 for my granddaughters birthday. The service was very good , we always enjoy the mixed starters , then we all had different mains which were lovely flavors as we tried each others. Great service and will definitely be going back.

We dine here a lot; food good and portions when eating in are tasty and generous. We've had a takeaway through delivered on a couple of occasions, not only is it more expensive which is odd but the portion size is meagre. Mains are OK although lots sauce but starters are a rip off. Very small portions of everything. Don't even bother with the mixed starter for two. It barely fed one - £13.95!!! For an expensive takeaway no little extras like fortune cookies or prawn crackers. Not impressed. Won't be ordering takeaway again.

Arrived to a nice greeting from friendly staff. We ate early at 6pm. Restaurant quiet. We ordered set menu for two. Very tasty. Overall a very nice experience. Comfortable cosy environment. Highly recommend.

Good food and service but not good for disability very high step up coming down step very awkward for me had to have 3 people help me. Stairs also inside to seating. Shame.

Très bon repas typique thai avec un cadre sympa la cuisine est très très bonne et les personnel très agréable si il faut trouver un bémol un petit coup de frais au décor serait le bienvenu mais j'y retournerai très volontiers et sans hésitation.

Our favourite local restaurant! & we've tried many. It's 10/10. We eat in or from Lumpini most weekends & have never had a bad dish. They don't deliver to us but it's so nice we're happy to go and collect. It's slightly over average price, only slightly... but it's worth it, and you get a good sized portion too. The flavours are amazing, the food is all so fresh, and the staff are all lovely and friendly. It's great inside the restaurant too, aswell as a take out. Highly recommend!!

Always love a Lumpini! Usual excellent, polite service. The food - we had a set menu for 4 - was superb. We adore their weeping tiger, and it didn’t disappoint. The usual huge plate of mixed starters. Wine was reasonably priced and the atmosphere was buzzing for a Wednesday night. Can’t fault the place.

Lovely food and friendly staff.

Most disappointing Thai food ever. As it says within the menu: “we have taken our inspiration from the countries around Thailand, like India and China.” Result an over complicated menu with nearly 100 dishes to choose from. Poorly executed and not one authentic Thai dish on the plate. Don’t get me wrong the kitchen can cook very tasteful, however don’t know how to class it as Thai, Indian or more like a Chinese.

This is a very friendly and accommodating restaurant. The food is very good and it isn’t expensive compared to other local oriental restaurants. I am a regular here as it is close to where I live.
