This is our second time after dining a la carte and loving it. We booked the tasting menu and it didn’t disappoint. 6 courses of meticulous combinations of tastes and textures. All local and in season. Shellfish, game, fish were included across the first 4 courses. And the final 2 desserts included Berry Compot, Macadamia and White Chocolate Crumb, Pistachio Ice Cream which was phenomenal and a favourite of the table. 100% recommend and will be back.

The food here is superb, we stayed for 3 nights and at no point were we disappointed with any of the courses. The tasting menu was fabulous with all the different flavours yet flowed together to make something really special. The staff are lovely and nothing is too much trouble, even when we managed to tip a glass of port over it was handled with swiftness and gentle humour. The service is excellent without being intrusive. Highly recommend

Every thing was lovely - venue, staff and food. But we were left with a bad taste when our bill arrived. We knew it would be pricey - but adding on £4.50 for a single bread roll and £2 for hot milk to go in two Americanos is a bit steep by any standards. Come on!

Couple's Saturday dinner in the Peak District for the weekend. Not staying in the hotel - which is in a terrific location with gorgeous views. The food first - really very well done and elegantly presented. Partner happy with her asparagus starter and lamb main. I liked my mackerel starter - although pretty small! My pork three ways main was excellent. (Crackling served as smart but near inedible little sticks. Decorative value only.) Very well put together wine list - great Fleurie for us. So why three stars? Well the evening works like this - sat down in the - very comfy - drinks area but then pretty much ignored and eventually got drinks 30 minutes after having arrived precisely on time. Maitre d' finding plenty of time to chat to hotel guests but none to talk to us it seems. So get to order after about 45 minutes and finally served about an hour after arrival with little contact in between I don't really think that's good enough and it all felt rather unwelcoming. Young waiting staff tearing around and eventually being very friendly but as my partner said "lots of staff and still not enough". We wouldn't really have minded if someone had said "sorry, it's incredibly busy, don't worry we haven't forgottten you" or whatever. £178 for two, which is perfectly fine, but for that price you do expect it to be a cut above.

We stayed for 2 nights for my 70th birthday. Lovely view of Brinks Hill from our bedroom. Walks wonderful, even in the rain! Clean and comfortable. Excellent service, friendly staff. Foot and leg massage in spa really good, Lisa is lovely and made me feel relaxed. Pool, sauna and hot tub good. Grounds pleasant. Food really tasty (bit too salty in places) and well stocked bar. Would stay again.

Having advised them that I was intolerant to garlic onions etc I was surprised to find that for a Sunday lunch I couldn't have roast potatoes or gravy as they contained garlic. Surely some sort of gravy could be made without these to soften a Yorkshire pudding. Beef had to go back because it was very undercooked. Veg were very hard. Service and location were good. For the price we paid we were very disappointed

We were staying at a B&B close to the hotel, the owner of which recommended we have dinner there. The evening meal is more "fine dining", with pricing to match, but we were aware of this. However, the service and food was excellent and the ambience equally so. More importantly, it was a pleasure to to have the opportunity to dress up after a long walk in the hills and in our opinion value for money. We would certainly have dinner there again if in the area and highly recommend.

Recently stayed for a couple of days and only picked this place by chance. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. The hotel is tucked away up a long narrow road which is quite unerving when driving it in the dark, but you are rewarded with a lovely hotel nestled in a valley with stunning scenery. The biggest asset of this place has to be the staff, there were lots of them and service always seemed to be there but never intrusive. It felt like the staff belonged to a much more expensive hotel and restaurant and perhaps this is the aim of the owners. Hats off to them as it easily beat some michelin starred places I have been The food was really good, we went a la carte rather than the tasting menu, but everything was nice and as good as anything I have had. Great and extensive wine list too. Breakfast again was superb. Our room was nice, though a little small. One comment I would make is that the sound proofing is not the best, you can very clearly hear your neighbours in their room. This didn't impact us due to the 10pm curfew so everyone retired at the same time, but I can imagine in normal times if your neighbours got back after a few bottles at 1am you would have a disturbed nights sleep. Spa is decent enough, small but has everything you need. Just make sure you book a slot in reception asap, otherwise you may not get a chance to enjoy it. Overall I was really impressed and it exceeded my expectations.

We recently stayed at Losehill House as a celebration for my husband's 50th. We had a 24 hour break that felt like it was far longer! The food is absolutely exceptional, and the service was so friendly and attentive. We appreciated the small extra touches - chocolates in the room with happy birthday message and the same for my husbands dessert - lovely surprises! We loved the pool and the outdoor hot tub (with a view!). It was so relaxing! The rooms were very comfortable and very clean, with thoughtful amenities like robes, towels and flip flops for the pool & spa area. Thank you, we had a wonderful time at Losehill and exploring the beautiful Peak District. We hope to visit again after lockdown.

Lose Hill Spa and hotel . Title states spa . Prior to booking we were told we could use the spa and booked a slot only to find people refused to leave the spa and for the staff to state it’s not our problem we won’t be enforcing social distancing or enforcing our own policy of two people only . There were 8 people in the spa as opposed to 2 . They refused to leave and lose Hill Refused to enforce their own policy of 2 people only . Rude staff when asked to enforce we were told not to use the spa and that we haven’t paid for the spa it’s just and added bonus ! Name of hotel losehill spa . We did pay for the spa hence the name of the hotel . Food was average . Maybe it tasted poor due to the staffs sour attitude towards us. Arrogant staff give it two years max before they fold up . So arrogant they don’t have to treat paying customers with respect or let them use the facilities that have been paid for . Quite simply rude and arrogant . The way the female receptionist spoke to us was disgraceful . When we complained she told us we didn’t have to stay and the hotel was happy for us to leave . Also charging more for the rooms after pre booked .

I went to this lovely hotel for a birthday treat, together with a friend. The location is delightful, set amongst the hills in Hope Valley and down a winding country road, a little off the beaten track. The lounge is full of comfortable chairs and settees for pre lunch drinks and we ordered from the set lunch menu. We were shown through to the dining room which has panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. There was a good choice for a set menu. I opted for crispy lamb with pickled vegetables, my friend had leek and potato soup. The dishes were a good size and we both enjoyed them. Main courses were red onion tart tatin and Bream served with quinoa. We opted to share a dish of green vegetables. My tart was delicious and my friend enjoyed her meal including the quinoa, which she hadnt tried before. For dessert I had a white chocolate pannacotta with passionfruit... beautiful combination!!! My friend had pistachio cheesecake. The service was polite discreet and helpful. There was no rush to leave the table and we enjoyed a chat whilst enjoying a coffee and the view. I would highly recommend.

My girlfriend and I visited for a half day spa package which included tea / coffee on arrival, a 2 course "light lunch", a 40 minute treatment and 2 hours use of the spa facilities. I'd booked in for an afternoon visit which started with a hot drink in the lounge before lunch in the restaurant. This hotel is in a beautiful location and the restaurant has views over Hope Valley out of every window. There was plenty of choice on the menu with a good selection of starters, mains and puddings included in the package. We opted for mains and puddings and thought both were absolutely delicious. It clearly states "light lunch" and is exactly that. It suited me fine but if you have a larger appetite then you should consider upgrading to 3 courses or budgeting for some extra sides off the menu. The spa facilities are superb and immaculately clean. The pool is a good size and I enjoyed the sauna and steam room. The star of the show however was the outdoor hot tub. Even on a cold winters day it was very comfortable to sit in and the view out over lose hill was spectacular. I could have spent all day relaxing in it! From the treatment options I chose the shoulder, neck and head massage while my girlfriend had the discovery facial. We were both very pleased with the service and found the staff friendly and professional. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Losehill House and will definitely return in the near future. It was great value for money and I cant fault the service in any way. I just wish I'd booked the full day so I could have stayed for longer!!

The atmosphere of the dining room is very nice, with large picture windows overlooking a bucolic scene or grazing sheep. It is a relaxing atmosphere and takes a while to get used to the speed of fine European dining. They serve "canapes" in the lounge as well as your choice of a drink prior to seating in the main dining area. So an 8 pm reservation will get your meal served by 9 pm. It was worth the wait and the food was delicious.

My husband and I were bought this break as a thank you. What a wonderful hotel in a beautiful area. We stayed in the Edale Suite which was lovely with a huge bathroom with a free standing bath and huge walk in shower. The food was very good. One thing we would have liked - some background music in the lounge area as you can hear everyone's conversation and lounge and restaurant are 'open plan', perhaps a low dividing wall/trellis in one of the three entrances to restaurant. We would Iove to return as there is so much to do in the surrounding area.

Visited last month for my birthday for one night. My husband had booked me in for a facial at the spa which was lovely. Spa was nice and relaxing but they could do with a few more facilities especially another outdoor hot tub, as at busy times people were waiting up to an hour for it. In the evening we had the 7 course tasting menu which was nice and clearly designed using local seasonal ingredients. It wasn’t the best tasting menu I have ever had but nice nonetheless. He only course we didn’t like was the cheesecake. Very bland and almost as if the chef had forgot to put the sugar in! Breakfast in the morning was delicious. Lots of options available: yummy pastries, lovely sausages, nice fresh coffee, all whilst watching the newborn lambs playing in the fields outside. Lovely cosy bedrooms. Towels, robes, slippers all provided for the spa. Nice toiletries available for use. We also enjoyed a walk up Losehill, across to Mam Tore and down to Edale which I would definitely recommend. All in all a lovely stay! X

We have been to Losehil a few times and the breakfast has always been superb this time however the sausages were burnt and the fried eggs almost raw. Yoghurt and museli very good as on previous occasions but the coffee was awful (the machine that makes speciality frothy coffees wasn't working) so it was normal coffee in a pot and not good at all. The staff are excellent and our request for a tray for a member of our party who wasn't feeling well was speedily granted. We visited Losehill Hall Hotel for afternoon tea, celebrating a variety of special family events and we were so pleased with our choice of venue. We were given a very pleasant welcome and shown to a beautiful presented table with pristine linen and table settings. The location of the hotel is very picturesque and the view from our table of the surrounding countryside was very pretty. The afternoon tea was served in a traditional way, using a tiered display and there was a tasty selection of sandwiches with a variety of fillings to choose from. The dessert selection was also very appealing, including freshly made scones, mini creme brûlée’s, macaroons, an almond ‘bake well tart’ type slice and a chocolate ‘treat’! All very yummy! We were asked if we would like additional pots of tea or coffees, alongside fresh jugs of iced water. A special effort was made with iced congratulatory messages for the anniversary and birthday celebrations, which was also appreciated. The staff were attentive but not invasive and I would certainly recommend this venue. Many thanks!

We had Afternoon Tea in the Orangery Restaurant consisting of a selection of finger sandwiches served on white and brown bread, these included smoked salmon, Bennetts' Hope Valley free range eggs with mayonnaise, cucumber and Peak District ham and mustard. Warm, freshly baked scones with whipped cream and strawberry jam and a selection of seasonal home-made cakes, Afternoon Tea costs £15.95 per person and in my opinion is well worth it. The hotel uses local naturally grown/free range produce wherever they can and it shows in the taste.

2 night stay celebrating New Year. Welcoming reception staff, very polite. Our room was tucked away with lovely views of the surrounding landscape. However, it was very dated and had cobwebs in one corner of the room so didn’t feel as clean as you would expect. Small thing, but pillows were lumpy and were not comfortable to sleep on. Both my husband and I had 2 treatments. The shoulder, head and neck treatment was ok, but the back massage the following day was very good. The spa area is very small and again, very dated. We got in early after breakfast so had the area to ourselves, but it soon started to get busy. The hot tub outside is lovely, overlooking the beautiful surroundings. The steam room is very small and only fits 2 people. The pool was adequate, but only 2 loungers around the pool which meant we only stayed for an hour as started to get busy. The evening meals on both nights are some of the best food I’ve ever tasted. Beautifully cooked and presented and absolutely loved the orangery restaurant. The wine was also very, very good. Again the staff in the bar and restaurant area were very knowledgeable, polite and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble. They really are a credit to this hotel. The owner was serving people on NY’s Eve which I thought was great. He introduced himself to many of the guests and ‘mucked’ in which I thought was a nice touch. However, I have noticed neither the owner or Manager are responding to the reviews on this site which is disappointing. The hotel also need to ensure that somebody is available to answer direct telephone room calls as we tried many times and ended up having to wander down to reception if we wanted to order room service or if we needed anything. All in all, a lovely couple of nights stay. However, when you are paying just over £700 for a 2 night break I would expect a higher standard of room and spa facilities. The location and the staff make this hotel, without a doubt.

We've stayed here 5 or 6 times since around 2010. It's a nice hotel: good location, lovely rooms, Ok spa. But the main reason we kept returning was the food which used to be superb. Every mouthful of the taster menu was a delight. Unfortunately this is no longer the case - there was no 'wow' in any mouthful during the 7 courses this time, most were just average. Even the home made bread course used to be great, this time it was stodgy, tough and barely edible.

We got this 2 night stay through a silent auction at a Christmas dinner last year and paid a huge amount of money for it. We are well aware that the charity got the majority of the money and I don’t know what I was expecting other than luxury. The staff were amazing, the room was very big, so big the bed looked lost and had a tiny bathroom. The dinner was amazing! We had the a la carte the first night and the tasting menu the second night. Both were incredible. The breakfast was a bit underwhelming and the spa wasn’t really a spa, although there were treatments there wasn’t enough chairs/beds for everyone. I stayed at the Losehill in May 2017 with my wife, as part of a wedding booking. The accommodation is superb and I will write a separate review of that. However, the incident that is mentioned in the title of this review does cause me to write a standalone review of the restaurant. The English breakfast was extremely tasty, but my wife found a short, curly hair in her food. This put both of us off our breakfasts. When we raised this, a message came back from the chef saying it was a pig's hair. I simply don't agree with that. I have eaten plenty of pork products and the hair in question was too fine to be a pig hair. Additionally, even if it was a pig hair, it shouldn't be in our breakfast. To be fair, the waitress asked if we'd like anything else, although neither of us fancied anything for hygiene reasons. We do however have to eat here later at the wedding breakfast. Woohoo. We ate here last night and I must say the food was excellent. So it isn't all bad.

I have just returned from a weekend brekl at Losehill Hotel . Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here . Receptionist was friendly & informative , the hotel itself is set in lovely surroundings & a fair amount of parking spaces . We booked a deluxe room which was very comfortable , spacious & clean . The spa facilities were good & clean , however quite small . We used the hot tub which was lovely .Breakfast was excellent , plenty of choice , good quality produce & well presented. Have to say I was disappointed with our evening meal . Unless you like goat , venison pigeon or such like . I had to opt for a vegetarian dish which was nothing more than pastry & onion & a few green leaves . That said overall we had a lovely stay in a beautiful place with lots of places of interest to visit nearby . I would definitely return without the evening meal option & would recommend people visit here . Views are stunning . enjoy .

Dinner was 'A Taste of Losehill' - 7 beautifully cooked, well presented courses with well balanced taste and flavours. Accompanied by a nice bottle of reasonably priced wine from the wide selection. Service was unrushed and professional and we were seated at a large table in a pleasant, spacious restaurant. It was a pity it was evening so we couldn't appreciate the view.Just two adverse comments - 1. the reception area, although comfortable seating, is awkward for four people as we virtually sat separately and far apart making conversation difficult. Unfortunately there was no other choice.2. the main was served on a cold plate.Nevertheless I would recommend the restaurant and we will certainly return.

Four of us booked for a spa break with 7 course taster menu. The hotel is at the end of a long single country driveway with stunning views. The weather wasn't great (it was January in the Peak District! !) But the warmth and welcome from the staff was fantastic. My wife had the spa treatments and she said they were excellent. Thee is a lovely pool, steam room and sauna on the lower ground floor and it's not huge but for the size of hotel it was fine. The best bit was the large hot tub Jacuzzi on the deck outside. The evening meal was fantastic. I've eaten at Michelin restaurants and on our night it was right up there. The lounge area is lovely and relaxing as well. Waiting staff really friendly and efficient. Loved the combination of flavours and ingredients in all the courses. Breakfast next day is also al a carte with not a buffet in site. This would be a great hotel for any occasion and if you like walking a great Base to stay and explore.

We were staying locally and booked in for an evening meal. At £45 per head we were expecting something special and having walked all day we were ready for a good meal. Unfortunately we were very disappointed. My main course was a tiny square of fish on kale and my husband had 2 minute slices of lamb. The food was pretty and the plates were interestingly shaped but is that what you pay for? Not good value for money. Don't understand how what we were served could possibly be worth £45.

Visited and throughly enjoyed our stay. We were greeted by helpful reception staff, a lovely room very well equipped to a high standard. The restaurant has a lovely feel to it with wonderful views over the valley. The bar staff, waitresses were all very very helpful. The food was wonderful, 7 course taster was well worth it each course was well presented and tasted delicious, not sure which course was my favourite. Well worth a visit, would recommend.....

Overall an excellent afternoon tea with Prosecco, and fantastic views across the valley. The only complaint was that the white bread on some of the sandwiches was a little dry, but apart from that the selection provided and the cakes was lovely. This was excellent value for us as we had a Groupon deal.

We arrived to a very helpful and happy receptionist, we made our way to the room which was very nice, spacious and fully kitted out. We spent the afternoon in the spa which is ideal for couples as each facility cannot take more than 2 – 4 people each. We did have to wait for the facilities as there were 12 people eyeing up when the last had moved away. The spa was very clean and well kept, the hot tub outside is a great feature and worth a visit. The room was very relaxing and a great nights sleep. We were having a great time until dinner. My partner had brought us the 7 course ‘Taste of LoseHill’. The staff were very pleasant and offered drinks at the seating area before we were taken to our table in the corner of the orangery. To start the meal was pleasant with the first two courses bringing lots of flavour to the menu, the dishes were small but for the first too courses this is what you would expect. The rest of the meal took longer and longer to appear which after a few glasses of wine left us both hungry and tipsy with very little stomach lining. The main course was very small and the size of a ½ oz piece of stake. By the 6th course (I was very hungry) and so we opted for the additional cheese course +£8.50. Appeared were four very small pieces of cheese and a collection of wafer thing crackers. Whilst eating more people were seated which left us lost in the corner, I had to go to the bar myself to get some more water after waiting ten minutes for a waiter. Over all it took three hours for our dinner to be served and I felt hungry afterwards which I was not impressed with for the price paid. Breakfast was very different, we sat ourselves in the middle of the orangery to overlook the great view of Win Hill, there were a handful of people, we were served in good time and the food was very good. Over all, I would highly recommend the hotel but would eat out for dinner next time.

Expected better from this restaraunt, paid extra for 'seasonal vegetables' to accompany our main dish, only to get a small portion of very substandard broccoli, cauliflower and carrots, almost like a bag of frozen vegetables had been opened, warmed and served. How disappointing when the rest of the food was so nice.

I booked as a 60th birthday present over a Sunday/Monday with spa treatments on the Sunday. The whole experience was excellent. The staff were fantastic. We spent the afternoon in the small leisure area. The pool is small but OK as is the Sauna and the Steam room is for 2!! But as there are only 30 odd rooms it wasn't crowded. The best bit is the lovely Jacuzzi on the deck outside. On a freezing Sunday afternoon the hot tub was wonderful. Both our rooms where lovely warm and comfortable with beautiful bedrooms. We booked the 7 course taster menu and started in the lovely lounge area for aperitif and some chefs surprises which were lovely. The choices on the taster were fresh, seasonal and excellently combined to flow through the meal. We had the additional cheese round again lovely. We didn't have the wine course but enjoyed the wine selection which starts at about £25 a bottle up to the hundreds if that's what you want. The staff in the restaurant were so attentive without ever overbearing overall a lovely experience.Breakfast was also lovely with no hint of a buffet in sight and came as a choice of three courses. I had the full Derbyshire breakfast and it was lovely as was our guests Smoked Haddock and poached eggs and Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs. All in all a lovely stay with great views and lovely walks on your doorstep

We chose from the set £45 evening menu.I chose the starter of Pigeon which sadly was overcooked and not good in the eating.Had we not been with friends who were staying there overnight I would have sent the food back, but didn't want the evening spoilt. My husband was also disappointed with the Rhubarb dessert, comprising of thin strands of tasteless Rhubarb.I realise from many other positive reviews that I seem in the minority but personally I was left underwhelmed.

My daughter and I attended her friends wedding. This is a wonderful venue for a small wedding. There were 50 guests. The scenery was the perfect backdrop for the photos. The wedding meal was very tasty and it was served by a professional team who ensured we we all served within minutes of each other ensuring we all ate hot food together. Drinks at the evening reception were reasonably priced. We stayed over for a cost of £80.00 for a twin room and breakfast. The room was clean tidy and well stocked with tea coffee etc and lovely toiletries. It was warm and very comfortable. Breakfast was excellent.. a good choice on offer. Recommend smoke salmon and scrambled egg. The staff were very helpful and welcoming during our stay. I would stay again but would make sure there was time to have a spa treatment and use the facilities which includes a pool. I know my daughters friend was very happy with the venue and the services provided by a very professional team. Would highly recommend.

So the setting is lovely, and the restaurant really maximises on that, and that was kind of the main reason we decided to go here for Sunday Lunch. So if you want a good setting for your roast, you don't get much better than here. Service wise things were good, exactly as I'd expect and generally everything went well, I think one of the staff must have been new though as he forgot to bring out any vegetables with my beef, I wasn't sure if I should wait for it or say something but another waiter came to apologise and then the veg came quickly afterwards so overall no problems. The food was decent although not outstanding as there were a few things that weren't as good as they could have been. Salted caramel Creme Brulee had a bit of an odd texture, but the mains and starters were lovely, particularly the sea bass I had for starter actually, that was very nice and the roast beef and salmon were both excellent. Given the location and the general experience, I thought the Sunday set menu was good value overall and drinks weren't that expensive either. We had a lovely lunch and I'd definitely visit again and recommend it.

During a weekend at Oaker Farm Cottages just up the road from this beautiful hotel, we arrived on spec and were made to feel very welcome indeed. We were seated quickly and, when we asked about the lack of veggie options, another separate veggie menu was presented. It might be useful for all applicable menus to be on offer all of the time and to all guests - less stigma! We opted for the 4-course a la carte and the food was just delightful; elegant, tasty, complex yet simple. I'd definitely go again.

we visited for an evening meal, staff very pleasant, nice atmosphere, menu quite varied But expensive, house wine by the glass very expensive. The venison was accompanied by a good sauce but was quite chewy, the bill had to be queried as it did not have the discount applied that we had been told to expect and the free glass of wine definitely never appeared!

I booked this hotel on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis for me and 3 other members of my family to celebrate my Mum's 70th birthday. The hotel is in an idyllic spot perfect for exploring all that the Peak District has to offer. We arrived at about 6pm to find an unattended reception desk. We could hear a member of staff on the phone in a side room off the reception area to what sounded like a potential guest. We waited for nearly 10 minutes before the member of staff came into the reception area and asked us to take a seat and he would be with us shortly. He then went back to the phone conversation and it was a further 5 minutes before we were eventually checked in. We were not given any choice as to the time we would like to have dinner but merely informed that we had been booked in at 7pm for 7.30pm. We were then escorted to our room (we had booked a 2 bedroom family suite) by this young member of staff who unfortunately smelled so bad of body odour that it was a very unpleasant journey up to our room with the 5 of us in close confinement in the small lift. The family suite was very spacious but unfortunately the only toilet was in the huge bathroom. This isn't particularly practical for a family of 4. It's a shame they didn't think to fit a 2nd/separate toilet in as there was certainly ample of space within the family suite for this and would have made a huge difference. The living room appeared to have a real cobbled together collection of furniture in it. We recognised one of the sofas as the same as some of the sofas downstairs in the lounge area of the hotel, except the sofa in our room had no legs on it so it was actually quite difficult to get up from being so close to the floor. The chairs and table in the room appeared to be outdoor/conservatory furniture. There was a choice between a 3 course meal or upgrading to a 7 course tasting menu for a further £20. We all had the 3 course menu but unfortunately the amount of variation and choice for each of the 3 courses didn't wow any of us particularly. My sister ended up having chicken for her starter as well as chicken for her main course as a result. The pudding menu was very heavily mousse/pana cotta-based and could have done with a warm option like a chocolate brownie or sticky toffee pudding done really nicely to add a bit more interest to the choices on offer. The food was all nicely presented, but my venison was in parts actually raw and I had to leave it (I always eat fairly rare meat but this was actually raw and chewy in parts and I didn't want to eat it). Unfortunately at no point did anyone come round to ask if everything was OK with our meal or ask if we would like any more drinks. Which leads me on to say the thing that really let the whole dinner experience down was the service. The staff members were all generally quite young and this lack of experience certainly showed. My Dad ordered a glass of red wine from the menu only to be told they didn't have that one anymore as they were in the process of updating their wine menu. However, the waiter waited until my Dad had read the wine menu he was given and selected one before being told this! The waiter didn't appear that knowledgeable about the alternatives on offer when my Dad asked what he could have instead. The waiter that cleared our plates dropped things on the floor on two separate occasions. On one of these occasions, he actually dropped my Dad's knife which fell sharp side down on to my Dad's hand. Fortunately my Dad wasn't hurt but this isn't the level of training/service anyone would expect from a 4 star hotel. Unfortunately, worse was to come the following morning. We had read an information letter in our room that it was advisable to book a time for breakfast as it was often busy at peak times. So we did this the night before. When we arrived downstairs for breakfast the following morning, we took the last table that was available. There were no table reservations or anyone seating people at particular tables. I'm not sure what the point of booking a time would have been if we'd come down to find every table taken. People continued to come in after us but were unable to sit down as the dining room was full. It became quickly apparent that there was a real lack of staff and there was a large number of tables with increasingly impatient people sitting at them with menus in front of them and wanting to order. After sitting at the table for 15 minutes, the one and only waitress (again, fairly young) came to our table with some menus and informed us that unfortunately 3 members of staff hadn't 'turned up' that morning so she was on her own. She was extremely pleasant and very apologetic about this, but we couldn't help thinking that the general young age of the staff at the hotel likely played a factor in people not being very reliable or committed to their job. It was a further 10 minutes before she was able to come back to our table to take our order for tea/coffee which arrived around 5 minutes later. Our order of 3 coffees and 1 tea actually arrived as 1 coffee and 3 teas (by this point another member of staff had arrived who was manically flying round the dining room taking tea and coffee orders but not writing them down) but we just drank it as we had been sat at the table for half an hour at this point without even anything to drink. It was then a further 30 minutes before we could order our food. The breakfast menu was full of choice of cereals, pastries and cooked items and was all done very well when it finally arrived. However, the whole breakfast experience took 90 minutes from start to finish and as a result we weren't able to do the walk we had planned for that morning. It may not be how they normally do things at the hotel but we couldn't understand why, given the unexpected turn of events with several members of staff not turning up, the management didn't lay out the fruit juice and cereals/pastries/fruit on a table so that guests could at least start to help themselves and wouldn't have been left for so long with absolutely nothing to eat or drink. This would have taken considerable pressure off the one waitress who for the most part was trying to do absolutely everything herself.Given the shambolic Faulty Towers-type breakfast experience, we had thought that one of the owners might have been at reception so that they themselves could offer their apologies to guests at check-out. A heartfelt apology and possibly even some kind of gesture like a free bottle of wine which might have cost them £10 to buy would have gone a long way. I probably wouldn't have bothered writing this review. Instead, it was another young member of staff who presented me with our bill and didn't even ask if we'd had a pleasant stay or whether everything had been OK. I paid the bill and left feeling like in no way had the level of service at this hotel lived up to the 4 stars rating. Very disappointing.

Firstly, when we checked in we were allocated and taken to a room which was already occupied. The guests weren't in the room at the time but we were left there by the member of staff who took us to it and he hadn't noticed that the room was already occupied. It took a few minutes for another member of staff to come back along to the room. It transpired that the pass key had been programmed for the wrong room. This was dealt with and we eventually were taken to the right room. One of the main issues for us here was that of security. It was a little worrying that the key programming system would allow this situation to arise. Secondly, at dinner, no bread was brought to the table, a minor error and we didn't raise this but the waiter noticed at the end of the meal that we had not any bread. He offered us complimentary tea/coffee and petit fours to compensate which we didn't take him up on. On checking out, we were charged for the petit fours, tea and coffee. Whilst we commented to the receptionist that the bill was slightly higher than we expected, we didn't notice the overcharge until checking the receipt after we'd paid and were leaving the hotel. The receptionist did refund us when we pointed out the error. Thirdly, we had ordered dinner for 8pm, arrived in the bar area as advised in readiness to have our order taken at 7.55pm and were not taken through for dinner until around 9pm. A couple who arrived around 10 minutes after us had their order taken before us and we're sat down well before us. We did feel a little overlooked which was a shame given this was our 25th wedding anniversary. Whilst these may seem like pretty minor errors, on a tariff for one night of over £240, we did feel that such mistakes were somewhat shoddy and completely avoidable had more care been taken.

Superb restaurant, sophisticated dining, pianist on a Saturday evening, Add to this the wonderful scenery outside and it is bliss. If you are a walker, there are invigorating climbs up Lose Hill and Win Hill right on the doorstep. Hope is an attractive village within walking distance. Used an afternoon tea for two voucher. The drive over was quite scenic through small villages with inconsiderate parking, cyclists and walkers everywhere. The lane to the venue is tiny with no passing places so beware. The car park is very small, again with selfish parking. Staff were polite and helpful. The view from the dining room was stunning, overlooking fields with lambs and other wildlife. The food was good with a selection of sandwiches including plain cheese on my request. Sweet treats were carrot cake, large macaroon, vanilla custard in a shot glass, bake well tart and a fruit scone with orange tang served with butter, jam and cream. Large pot of tea was topped up on request. Very civilised and peaceful location. The Sunday roast dinners were huge and looked/ smelled delicious. Recommended.

We spent a lovely night at Losehill as a treat prior to my birthday. The hotel is lovely with a small spa and outdoor jacuzzi. Our room was spacious and upmarket with a beautiful view over the surrounding countryside. We arrived early afternoon and after a brisk walk into Castleton we returned to the hotel and made use of the facilities. Lovely. We had booked the seven course tasting menu and it was excellent. I won't try to detail the whole menu as it would take too long but suffice to say each course represented some of the best cooking I have ever experienced. Being a tasting menu the portion sizes were small but they worked well together and we were certainly not hungry at the end. Dishes worth a particular mention were both fish courses. Hake and mackerel were both cooked perfectly. Along with the lamb which was fantastic. The wine is expensive but we had a nice bottle of Australian Shiraz that didn't break the bank. The following morning we had breakfast in the gorgeous conservatory that was bathed in bright Spring sunshine. The breakfast was equally as dazzling. Fruit compote along with yoghurt and muesli was followed by a hearty full Derbyshire breakfast that was well cooked and packed with good quality ingredients. All the staff we came across were pleasant and professional. They were very busy during our stay but they kept smiling and did a great job. Can't wait to go back but will have to stay for longer next time.

I was quite disappointed with my visit to the spa. I had booked my partner a massage for his birthday and also arranged a session in the spa in order to use the pool to take our twins swimming for the first time, I had ensured this was all doable. Upon arrival I was sent down stairs to the spa and started to get changed, anyone with twins or a baby knows this is not an easy task, but realised I hadn't been given a towel or dressing gown so glad to leave my baby with a stranger to go and get them. I found the staff quite unprofessional and not helpful , I expected the service to be really good and professional for such a place but the standard was not what the website had eluded too. The facilities weren't anything special either. Upon leaving it came to my attention I had been charged for 3 spas (swimming pool use) and 2 cream teas , which was totally wrong .I just found it a bit disappointing . The location and bar restaurant was nice though .

Been twice now to Losehill, eating both times and staying on this occasion. The food in the restaurant is fantastic, don't believe the greedy people who say that the portions are small; they clearly have never eaten off a tasting menu before! The idea of the tasting menu is to get a 'taste' of lots of things, so you don't get enormous portions! To be honest, after seven courses if you want more, even further small portions, you're being greedy! Every single course was delightful; loved the challenge to the taste buds of new flavours that you wouldn't necessarily have thought would work, but do, in spades! The hotel itself is beautiful, we had an enormous room with the biggest bathroom I've ever seen! My only criticism would be that the shower head was a little low, and my head kept banging into it! Minor annoyance only, it was manageable and didn't detract from the room... Loved the pool area and steam room etc, most importantly the hot tub on the terrace was wonderful, even in the cold weather, was piping hot. Went for an early morning swim and sat in the hot tub taking in the scenery and watching the mist roll over the hills.... Fantastic!Would thoroughly recommend to anyone, if you go for the tasting menu and expect massive portions, don't order it, order off the a la carte menu instead! As for the comments of the wine flight cost, yes it is expensive, but the wines are perfectly matched and you're drinking seven different bottles of wine!

I'd rarely give any restaurant 10 out of 10 for one course, so rating all seven courses of their superb tasting menu at that level, does in my opinion rate it as one of the best restaurants for miles around. My wife describes the food as "exquisite" which along with friendly and efficient service, and a very comfortable ambiance, made for a superb, relaxing meal. Thick linen table cloths and serviettes echo the high level they attain, which from walking through the door to exiting the car park was superb.

A wonderful find as we travelled towards Buxton, having negotiated countless motorways from Leeds! We entered from an overcast and wet journey to the welcome of a blazing fire and the warm hospitality of High Peaks' staff. Tabitha and Izzy delivered two lovely dishes from their 'Favourites' Menu. Pub food, at its best: genenerous portions, piping hot and absolutely delicious. I had the Steak & Kidney Pie - with rich gravy and veg. My wife had the Mixied fish stew - the best she has tasted (and that includes those luxiurious dishes in SW France. Well done to the chefs and serving staff - you made our lunchtime memorabl eand deserve the the acolade you get in Alistair Sawday.
