Lovely hotel with friendly staff. Stayed over NY, and they very quickly helped us out when we managed to leave our spare car key in the room after checkout. Room was nice, but the real star was the food. Some of the nicest I've eaten in a while (and I've spent this year eating a lot of very nice food). Worth a trip just to eat (and you might as well enjoy the lovely location whilst you are there).

My partner and I were here on 10th June and this was our fourth visit to the restaurant over the last couple of years. The previous three previous occasions at this restaurant have been sat outside and magical! Food and service EXCEPTIONAL. This time however service was poor. A starter, the salmon platter that we have every time at this restaurant was about 70% smaller and not enough for two people. We also ordered croquettes they were ICE COLD. The croquettes were taken off the bill and we were offered a cocktail, but seeing previous reviews over the last few weeks there seems to be a common theme of complaints, so the restaurant is either not learning or there is just a lack of care. The mains were ok, felt as though they had been waiting on the pass and were warmish. We left very disappointed. Such as shame as this place used to be a "go to" destination restaurant enjoyed by many locals. I get the feeling that the tourist "one visit" scenario is now the focus. I do appreciate that there have and still are difficult times with Covid and the hospitality impact, but there are some things that you should not cut back on, especially as this is not a cheap restaurant.

Visited with 3 family members following reservation for dinner. We were shown to our outdoor ‘pod’ in the kitchen garden. A lovely environment, but the seating is wooden benches which become uncomfortable after a while.Service was very slow, but pleasant. Our first bottle of white wine was not properly chilled, but the second was. The server did not ask if we wanted to taste the wine ( I appreciate it was screw top & not cork), & we were left to pour it ourselves. We ordered starters & mains, but were then told that 3 of the choices were not available, meaning 3 of my party were disappointed. The sharing croquette starter was tasty, but arrived to the table lukewarm. I did inform the server, who apologised. The crab starters were much enjoyed. The main courses were all enjoyed,& were served hot. The front of house team never visited the table to check all was well or to ask if we required further drinks. This establishment trades as a ‘higher end’ venue & it’s not cheap, but it does not live up to its desired reputation. It could be fabulous with a few tweaks. • cushion pads on the hard wooden benches• improved standard, speed & efficiency of service• ensure the food is delivered promptly from the pass• front of house to inform patrons of unavailable menu items on seating, to reduce guest disappointment The food is amazing & the chefs should be congratulated. As it currently stands, I would not recommend Llys Meddyg, but would welcome a further visit if the suggested improvements were undertaken.

Fantastic Pod DiningWe ate at Llys Meddyg in tiny lodges dotted around the kitchen garden. Each pod was enclosed and had a ceiling heater. The kitchen garden is tucked round the back of the hotel, so sheltered. We were eating on a very blustery bank holiday, but it was cosy in the pod.The food was great. I ate the vegetarian options which were truly inspired. The staff were very friendly and helpful. All in all a great experience.

We dined at Llys Meddyg on their first post Covid opening weekend, May bank holiday. I truly hope this experience was teething problems, as the restaurant garden is really lovely, the pods are brilliant and it’s a great setting for a lovely evening out. I was warm outdoors in the heated pods and loved the surroundings. It went downhill from there. We are used to eating in a variety of restaurants and knew that this was pricier than your average gastropub, but assumed the quality would match. We waited half hour to order drinks and ordered a bottle of wine. The waiter said he’d be back with a cooler but never arrived to I had to chase it. When someone brought it, it had three ice cubes and a few cms of water. I had to go looking again for a member of staff and eventually got ice in the ice bucket. Salmon ‘sharing’ starter was ok but tiny for £12. No way is this a sharing platter. Main course. Lamb was quite tasty and soft. Husbands pork belly was terrible, not a hint of crispness, just flabby fat on the top. He’s not fussy and we were starving so he ate it. We deliberated with the waitress over triple cooked chips or potatoes, we went for potatoes and what turned up was a cold potato salad?! Very weird to go with main courses, especially that there was no such description on the menu and the waitress didn’t try to explain. No one came to ask at any point if everything was ok. I truly hope this restaurant does well post Covid, it has the setting and potential to. However, there needs to be some serious changes to the quality of food and the service. I hope this was just first weekend teething troubles.

Ate here with my family just after the first lockdown had ended and was delighted to see that Llys Meddyg had seized the initiative by filling the garden with small wooden huts.Ok the menu wasn't what it is normally (we had stayed here for New Year's Eve a few years ago) but under the circumstances the food was good and reasonably priced and the place was buzzing.I congratulate them.

And lucky old us - wow! This was a great surprise, we had no idea we were coming into something so unusual and so good. The garden space is very big and on the lawn, amongst the flowers, herbs and vegetable beds sit tables and chairs, mainly made of roughly hewn wood, plus tenty-sheddy structures with heaters, teepee-looking things and probably other structures I didn't take in.We were there when it was dark and there were strings of lights throughout the garden and it was all stunning and rather difficult to take in!The service was occasionally scatty but always well-meaning and pleasant and mostly very professional and rightly proud of what they do, the place and the food they serve. The food! We were so thrilled with the food after some not very good experiences locally and, as others have said, we wished we'd found it earlier and been able to book another night.I had the pork belly which must have been cooking for hours, apart from the rind (not exactly crackling but still crispy and wonderful) I could cut the meat with my fork - love to know how to achieve it. No taste had been lost in the cooking process and the fat was there but was kind of crumbly so it was gorgeous. And it came with great slices of home-pickled carrot and fennel which was just delicious with a hint of sweetness and a hint of spice. And a puree which I believe was cauliflower. And don't forget the delicious little black pudding rissole that comes with it.As you can see, I could go on and on! My partner loved his succulent lamb, which was served with the same vegetables. Oh, and we had side dishes of seasonal greens and roasted beetroot and goats cheese - these were also yummy and well flavoured, side dish didn't mean unimportant.Sadly, we didn't have dessert, what can I say, bet they're ace. This is far too long, do visit if you can it's a real treat with great cooking and lovely people.

We visited Llys Maddyg this evening for dinner. We were directed downstairs to the cellar bar. The whole area was cold and draughty. I had phoned earlier in the day and requested seats inside.I asked if food was being served elsewhere as I knew there was a proper dining room on the premises but I was told there was nowhere else to eat. I was given a blanket when I complained about the cold. The food was good, there was no complaint there. However a Dalmation puppy suddenly appeared from a side room obviously belonging to the hotel. The dog stood by our table and gave itself a good shake, not a good hygienic thing to happen. The dog came to our table which we ignored. It sat down and a little while later a waitress proceeded to bend down by the bar to stroke and play with the dog. She then got up and without washing her hands, picked up cutlery and later served drinks and food to customers sitting in the pods outside. We were not impressed and I am sure Environmental Health wouldn't be either.

Shame not to have the kids burger, chips & milkshake (which they loved) but with new chefs etc things will change. Surprised to have only one starter on offer which was shame. The salmon was amazing though shame water cress with it wasn’t fully washed. Ordered some duck nuggets as well from side dish (not sure who’d order it as a side for a main but never mind) and they were brilliant too; Mains were all very good too as were puds. More than happy sitting in pods outside with a heater there if required. And the staff serving were wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. Shambolic. Packed the entire restaurant out with only a handful of staff. Waited 55 minutes for our drinks, which came in dirty glasses. They got our order wrong many times and we often didn’t even get what we ordered. Food came at all different times. Had to wait for another table to leave for us to finally get a glass for our wine. The management should be entirely ashamed of themselves. They filled out the place and left the staff to suffer, apologise and literally sprint around with incorrect orders.Next time, buy enough glasses, order enough potatoes, hire enough staff or don’t accept so many reservations.

Really enjoyed our meal at Llys Meddyg, so many thanks to the awesome team who worked hard to ensure we had a lovely and relaxed evening. We sat at a little covered picnic table (with heating) in the garden, had the excellent smoked salmon (smoked on site!) to start with our drinks. The bartender made a special effort to make me a tasty mocktail as I’m pregnant. We then had the cod&lagoustine special and the lamb. Both excellent! Finished off with a local cheese plate and meringue for dessert. Would definitely be back!!! We went as a couple but there were lots of families with all ages of kids so do bring the family!

We ate here on the last night before all restaurants were shut due to the virus. Each course was amazing. First, the house-smoked salmon is wonderful as other reviewers have stated. My partner had the local lamb which was perfectly cooked. I opted for the vegan entree which sounded weird (cabbage and other root veg in a miso-sauce) but the waitperson insisted that it was amazing. She was absolutely correct and it was one of the most unusual dishes that I've had in a long while. I cemented in my mind that this is a creative kitchen with lots of latent talent. My husband had to the cheese course and I had a sweet dessert which was also lovely. I look forward to the day when I can return to this wonderful spot.

This restaurant has managed to get two AA rosettes, into both the Michelin Guide and Hardens 2019 guide and had a sticker of The Good Food Guide. Had our last meal of our holiday there. It was the most expensive restaurant we had eaten at and, having eaten well for less for the previous two weeks we expected something special. The starters were good and so when our main courses arrived we anticipated more of the same. Alas, no. My lamb was served with three large mounds of cold salsa verde that had no place on the plate, although nothing else on it could be described as hot, and my wife’s fish was so overcooked that the flesh was almost liquid. Also, when I ordered new potatoes as a side, the waitress did not inform me that there was already garlic mash included, so a lot of potato went to waste. An apologetic waiter said he would deduct our glasses of wine from the bill, but the evening was ruined and we left without dessert or coffees. The chef had agreed that the fish was overcooked and yet they let it leave the kitchen. This restaurant left a bad taste in more ways than one.

Visited for our 20th wedding anniversary. We were sat in the cosy cellar area which was nice and intimate but the bar noise was a bit intrusive at times. The menu was not extensive but adequate. We ordered a smoked salmon and a solva crab for starters. Other reviewers have commented on the portion size being small however we found both to be adequate as there was also a side of sourdough bread. The salmon was excellent but found the crab wanting a little extra to lift the flavour. For mains we ordered the lamb and dexter beef, again reviews have commented on portion size so we ordered some potatoes and a portion of chips. We asked the waitress for a guide to the size as we wondered if one portion would be enough between us but as she was new she couldn't help. As it happens one portion would have been enough between us as we were going for three courses anyway. We we brought a wrong order so while our beef was being hastily prepared we shared the lamb which was an excellent plate of food but I didn't get the point of the anchovy my wife did so the jury is out on that one. The potatoes were delicious and although we don't normally go for chips with this type of meal they are really, really good! When the beef arrived we shared that too. It was beautifully cooked albeit a small portion, the accompaniment I feel didn't really add much to the palate but looked nice! Finished with an excellent cheese board, needed a couple more biscuits though, chocolate and ice cream very rich so small portion is all you need. We had wine by the glass as we wanted a cabernet sauvignon for the starters and a red for the main. We felt the former a bit ordinary and tasted of sulphite but the red merlot was acceptable but not stunning, with such a lot of excellent wine out there these days I think there is room for improvement there.

We were looking forward to celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary at Llys Meddyg and booked a table for four. We were greeted warmly and shown to the attractive and cosy cellar restaurant. Two of us had the smoked salmon starter, a small portion but tasty, and two had the crab, which was also tasty but tiny – about a dessert spoon’s worth of crab flattened on a plate with small niblets of apple and pickled kohlrabi. A tiny jug of bisque, when poured over the crab, was refreshing but was immediately absorbed by the crab meat. For mains, three of us ordered the belly pork, which we were told did not need a side order as it was quite a large portion. One ordered brisket with a side order of potatoes. What turned up were three plates each containing two small pieces of belly pork with some sauce and a small serving of greenery, a plate containing what looked like two fishcakes that turned out to be the brisket, and a side serving of very tasty potatoes (that we all shared). Nouvelle cuisine? Thought that was a thing of the past. We all agreed that both the brisket and the belly pork were extremely dry and could really have done with a decent drop of gravy. When the waitress collected our plates we told her this and she said she was sorry that we had found the meat disappointing. We ordered deserts, three pistachio cakes and a chocolate brownie with sorbet, and they were all tasty – but very small portions again. The sorbet was the best part of the whole meal, being an absolute zinger. All in all, we felt such tiny portions, particularly of cheap cuts of meat, did not warrant the price we paid, so it was a bit of a disappointment all round.

My husband and I stayed here in May (this review is a bit late) while doing a mini tour around Wales. Newport is such a sweet village with great shops and pubs. The bathrooms are large with beautiful bathtubs as well as a shower and the most amazing smelling reed diffusers. In fact we loved the smell so much, we bought two! The hotel owner knows the lady who makes them in the village and had two delivered over which were ready for us at reception when we checked out. The family run hotel is a brilliant find. The service was friendly and faultless. I definitely recommend dining in their restaurant which is fabulously located in the cellar / vaults. It’s an awesome location and the food is insane! Not to mention all their homemade vodkas and gins which they use to make all sorts of delicious cocktails. A must visit if you’re ever in the area or better yet, make the trip to stay here. For my wife, as a meat eater, her meal was tasty and well presented, and breakfasts were well cooked and presented, but once again not very veggie friendly and small portions. Unfortunately I failed to check the account before I paid - I had been charged for puddings not eaten - my fault. Stayed in the Yurt for two nights. Things we enjoyed - great, enthusiastic check in from the new manager (I didn’t catch her name). Yurt is really different, cool and spacious. Huge comfortable bed, luxurious en suite and great hot tub that was fired up and ready for us. Fantastic toiletries and little homemade biscuits. Breakfast was absolutely delicious both days. Dinner was really tasty and very well executed.

We came here in August to stay for a week with our dog. The hotel was nicely situated close to the harbour and nearby beaches. All of the staff were extremely friendly, our room was spacious and nicely decorated and the food in the restaurant was delicious! The chefs and waitresses were so accommodating to me with my dairy and other food intolerances and went out of their way to make me something delicious and different each evening. Our little spaniel was welcomed too and it was lovely to be able to eat with her in a nice area! We had a lovely time - thank you for looking after us :)

We were put off before we had eaten anything by the 'up selling' of homemade bread (which certainly did not taste homemade) and sides. The main courses were delicious and service adequate - new staff who did not know the menu. The meal did not represent value for money and we sadly will not be going back.

We joined a group for a birthday meal. The house itself is lovely with the restaurant in the cellar The food was beautiful but the whole evening was ruined by the lack of service. Rarely did anyone arrive at the table to check if everything was OK. We waited ages for our order to be taken but as mentioned earlier the food was top class. Little things that make the difference were missing. I asked for mustard, it did not arrive. I asked for a steak knife, it did not arrive. We had to eventually call the waitress over to clear the dishes and then had a long wait for the dessert menu then another long wait for the order to be taken. I appreciate a relaxed meal but from beginning to end ours took three and a half hours. Either there is a lack of front of house staff or they are untrained or both. I inevitably leave a tip but not this time

We have just returned home from a three night stay ay Llys Meddyg. What a wonderful place. From the moment we arrived, we were well looked after, by every member of staff. Our dog was made very welcome, especially by the resident dog, who looked after him during our stay! Everything about our visit was excellent- our room was lovely, the food was outstanding and the home made cakes were amazing. The garden area is stunning, and how lovely to see the chefs picking own grown produce to use in that day's menu.

Firstly, the food was (mostly) delicious. Each of my three courses was very tasty and I could definitely have eaten more as my starter and pud were particularly good. I was lucky as the rest of our party had mixed fortunes with their main course, including tough lamb heart but almost rare meat and very smoky duck! And I wish vegetables came as standard with the main, as it’s not cheap and aren’t we meant to be encouraging eating lots of veg?! It was £3 or £4 for every portion of veg on top - plain daft. Anyway, despite it being (mostly) well cooked and nicely presented, there wasn’t really a lot of it, so when our bill ran into hundreds (admittedly a couple of bottles of wine and other drinks added to the total!) we decided we wouldn’t rush back straight away, as there is actually a lot of choice in the Newport area and although we enjoyed our evening, the dining chairs were rather uncomfortable and the (apparently short staffed) staff took a little while to hit their stride. All in all, I would recommend the food but the whole experience didn’t warrant the hefty price tag.

If you're looking for somewhere to stay in the beautiful coastal town of Newport in Pembrokeshire with its stunning beach the only place I would consider is Llys Meddyg the hospitality is second to none, add to that multiple award winning food which is regularly recognised as some of the best in the business by many of the good food guides. A stay at this very relaxing and comfortable from home will not disappoint. From the individually styled bedrooms all with fabulous bathrooms which have both large baths and free standing showers to the cellar bar or kitchen garden restaurant where food is served along with whatever glass of wine or cocktail you choose from the comprehensive list on offer The owners ,The Sykes family and their very friendly, helpful staff certainly know how to put you at ease from the moment you arrive. Was recommended to us by family and knowing how fickle they can be, we were looking forward to our dinner but it got off to a bad start when we found the car park full (but the restaurant empty) so we had to park a couple of mins away. On entering the premises, we were met by absolutely nobody...could hear talking ...but it was a couple of mins before anyone turned up...no obvious bar area, just an empty 'something room' and a dining room with one diner. We were shown to the dining room but not given any other option as we could have eaten downstairs in the bar (or whatever it was called). Being almost empty, the dining room was somewhat dark and uninviting.....altogether, not an inspiring start to the evening...it get's worse...the menus turned up on chipped chipboard ...wow !!

Booked here midweek as they do a gourmet society discount and wanted to see if they've stepped up to fill the gap made by the closure of Cnapan - they haven't. Dining room has a nice ambience with some interesting artwork and menus and table water were brought promptly by a very pleasant and smiley waitress. Two of us ordered sirloin steak - one rare the other medium rare. Both came cooked on only one side (!) and running blood into the plate, the accompanying chips were a little under cooked. Steak knives were not supplied and when asked for only one came. The steaks were tough and chewy. Our friends had monkfish and plaice which they said was good. We had a chocolate ganache which was good and a lime pudding which was very sharp,

We visited for a meal as a family in late August. The food was amazing for the most part, particularly the pork belly starter. The experience was let down by the service which was poor. Our drinks were brought to the table promptly but the wine was not poured. We waited an hour for our starter with no communication or even sight of anyone serving. When we asked if we had been forgotten we were told there had been a big table downstairs so our food had been delayed. The attitude that came across was one of annoyance we had even asked! No spoon was given with the chowder starter so we had to go in search of one. When the main course food arrived, the steak which we had asked for well done was rare and the chowder seemed to be a very small increase on the starter portion (one person had it as a starter, the other as a main course). The steak did not cone with mushroom as described but broccoli. By this point we had given up with the service as it seemed as if our waitress was annoyed with us so we ignored the slight gripes with the food and enjoyed the food which was absolutely excellent on the whole. Grumpy service resumed with pudding which was also lovely. We were shocked when it came to paying and our grumpy waitress asked us what tip we would like to leave! Fantastic food but urgently need to work on service to ensure the whole experience matches what you pay for. Tip for the waitress who asked would be:Communicate with your customers if there is going to be a delay to their meal or changes to the described menu.Pay attention to detail.A smile goes a long way, a grumpy impatient attitude does not.

Family of four visited for lunch on the opening day. For starters, wife and I had crab cakes from local crab, these were very very tasty. For main course my Wife had exquisite courgette and herb linguine, I had plaice in brown butter, son had the lobster and young daughter had children's chicken goujons, the food was quite frankly amazing. I can honestly say that the plaice was better than any other fish dish I have ever had anywhere, and this includes starred restaurants in London. The price was also very reasonable especially as as well as starters and main, we all had a home cooked cake afterwards and my wife and I had a coffee each. The kitchen garden setting was amazing, great decor, very light and airy and a wonderful garden just out the back with herbs, flowers and tranquility! I cannot recommend this highly enough, especially with the standard of food, service and environment combinefd with the price. We have visited Llys Meddyg on a couple of other occasions, and once more, the kitchen garden has exceeded our expectation.

Whilst on an impromptu trip to Newport we decided to call in on Llys Meddyg having heard some good reviews from friends. Due to welcoming signs outside saying that food was served and the restaurant was open, we decided , without a reservation and out of season to see if a table for Lunch was available. On walking through the front door, past a member of staff engrossed on her computer we struggled to find a member of staff to help. Eventually after walking past other staff members chatting we eventually found a helpful builder working on site. It was only after this that a member of staff who had witnessed us struggling to find any help looked up from her conversation, but again failed to address us and offer any help. On enquiry as to wether they had availability for lunch we met with a simple 'NO we are not open' . When asked when they would be open they responded mayby in August, quite incredible and arguably questionable for a restaurant int his location.

Tasty meal but not as expected.Dessert was lovely - chocolate ganache and lots of other tasty details. Excellent.Coffee was listed as including petit fours but none was supplied. We went here for dinner two weeks ago for my husband's birthday. I loved the rustic way that the dining room had been decorated. When we came to order as far as the side dishes were concerned we weren't sure exactly sure what we needed but the lady that served us advised that we could easily get more if needed. I would recommend having side dishes, I don't think the main alone would satisfy most people. She told us that they smoke their own salmon and carrots. We had the carrots as one of our side dishes and they were absolutely lovely. I had Solva crab to start, it was lovely and fresh. We both had sewin for main course and both enjoyed it. I had panna cotta and my husband had some kind of trifle for desserts these were really nice too. In the ladies they had lovely white fluffy towels but think that these could do with being replaced with paper or a hand dryer. I look forward to eating here again.

Having a holiday home in the area we have been meaning to try Llys Meddyg for years; but we're regulars at Cnapan which has sadly now closed. I have been on Llys Meddyg's email list for some while and was interested to see their special 18.00 dinner menu offer. I booked a table by telephone six weeks ago for the special menu but when we arrived it was clear our reservation was not listed. We were then told that the six o'clock menu was not available currently. It was not a very good start but we were found a table and made ourselves comfortable. Despite the inauspicious start we were treated to a first class meal with very attentive service and we could not fault our meal in any way. We wanted a special evening and I am pleased to say we had one! Shame the price did not reflect the special deal we booked but more than happy with the meal we received and would be happy to return on our next visit in a couple of months time. Perhaps I will book in writing next time for safety:-)

The decoration, artwork, furniture and lighting have all been very tastefully chosen and creates a wonderful ambience for dinner, lunch or a cocktail. Earlier in the week we had eaten at a Michelin star restaurant in Pembrokeshire and Llys Meddyg was easily on a par with but a fraction of the cost. We had some fantastic wines to accompany our meal which complimented the dishes perfectly. What we all really liked was the restaurant's use of local and foraged produce - its was a breath of fresh air and I can't wait to return again. What a gem!

We went there on hearsay. It was easy to book by telephone only a few days before .On arrival we were welcomed, but not directed anywhere . We sat down in the front room on an uncomfortable sofa; a pleasant young waitress took our order for drinks. . There was one choice of red wine to have by the glass. I had soda water with lime which was warm and lacking fizz. Sometime later we were shown to our table in a room which had been converted for restaurant use. The decor was completely out of keeping with the rather grand nature of the house. The chairs were of poor quality and our table of coarse pine.We both chose the fish stew to start. My wife's stew contained several bones but my screw contained an entire fish skeleton as well as scraps of skin. It looked more like a poor quality stock than a good quality stew. It was hazardous to eat the little that I did consume. The accompanying bread was stale. We were given a knob of green aeoli to spread which was tasteless For the main course we both had Dover sole along with organic greens and French fries. The fries were greasy and the organic greens slimey and tasteless. My wife's Dover sole was overcooked and very tough and my fish was undercooked in parts and bloody.I had pointed out to the waitress that my stew was full of bones and she apologised but nothing else was said.We declined the offer of the pudding menu as we felt that we suffered enough. I left a tip for the waitresses as they were pleasant and attentive.Although we had the same main dish, the inconsistency in the way they had been cooked was rather concerning. All the above came to £70.During the night my wife had nausea and diarrhoea and I was equally afflicted the following day. I subsequently looked up the reviews on Trip Advisor and was surprised to see so many rave reviews. We are frequent visitors to Newport, but will not be frequenting Llys Meddyg again!
