The room price is too high for the facilities. Dirty carpets, otherwise clean. The breakfast is meager. No fruits. Welsh breakfast quite dry.

This place is unreal. I'm going to be honest, from the outside I wasn't expecting it to be quite so beautiful in the secret garden. But definitely go for dinner here. We went smart casual but I think any dress code is welcome, from heels to trainers. It is divine dining. The best bit, they're dog friendly outside so Vinny joined us (and they treated him really well too). They've got outside heaters & blankets. Prices was about £150 for two, 3 course with wine and some cocktails. Experience it. Service was excellent too.

This was our first we visited the Secret Garden in Newport, Pembrokeshire, and it will be our last We were sorely disappointed by the service. Our waiter, continuously sniffed and coughed throughout the evening. Servers were completely unaware of the menu, and the expectations from a waiter or waitress. Food was completely below par with the Hake totally undercooked. This was portrayed as an upmarket restaurant, but this was certainly not our experience.

Food was terrible at this place. We stayed at the golden lion next door and must say that the food was freshly prepared and delicious. We went next door just to try something different on the third night. We had the lamb dish and aubergine with miso! Omg the lamb tasted and smelt like cat food! Lamb was very dry as well! The aubergine was so salty and miso paste splashed all over! The veg carrots and broccoli were awful! Nothing prepared fresh! All seemed to be heated up upon request. Food was not worth the money at all. I had to go next door to the golden lion to order another evening meal for myself. The place is comfortable but the food was a big let down! Please do something about the chefs!

We loved the little cabin set in a wonderful kitchen garden. What a lovely surprise. The whole place is so well put together, and looks and feels beautiful. We didn't know we would be sitting outside, so hadn't dressed for it, but the heaters in the cabin plus lovely blankets made it comfortable and cosy. The food was delicious, each dish was expertly put together with unusual delicious textures and flavours. Only one vegetarian option for starter and main, but they were both fantastic. The staff were attentive and friendly, which made the whole experience lovely. We would love to come again

We booked this restaurant for our Daughter's birthday. We were welcomed and taken to the secret garden and a private dining area. We hadn't realised though that the restaurant was "fine dining". So the meals were small. Excellent food. You have to order vegetables on top of the mains as well which makes it expensive. We all had to eat more when back at our hotel as hungry as were are big eaters.

My partner and I visited Newport with my family. It was our final night together and we made the mistake of not booking a restaurant (6 of us in total) we walked around in hope to settle somewhere and after the final attempt to find availability, the lovely waitress made room for us in one of their cosy pods. I must admit, I was glad that we were turned away from the previous restaurants as we would never have found this gem of a place. Our experience there was quite different to what I've read. The waitress was incredibly warm, friendly and accommodating . The food was outstanding, we had to personally thank the chef's for such beautifully crafted meals. The atmosphere was very pleasant and relaxing and it made what was a special few days in Newport with family even more perfect, it was the cherry on the cake for us - thank you to the lovely staff there for a fantastic evening.

The booking system was efficient and a credit card is not needed to secure a booking, which can be the case for some high-end restaurants. We arrived late but were seated without any fuss. The smoked duck and salmon starters were really good. The mains were good too but the portions were on the small side. We ordered the steak and ox cheek, but got a very small portion of the later. The lamb shoulder was good but like the other main dish we had to order a couple of sides to supplement the main dish. We finished the meal with a plate of Welsh cheeses and home made crackers. The services was efficient and friendly. We dined inside the restaurant but there is a secret garden with a few small dining pods outside. I wasn't a fan of the outside loos, however.

I was lucky enough to photograph a wedding at Llys Meddyg this past weekend. It was my first visit there, and hopefully not my last. It was such a beautiful location, and the outdoor space for the ceremony was idyllic. Not to mention how amazing the food was; I think the lamb might just be the best I've ever eaten. nice place, brigh and clean, modernly woody. Food: original, welldone, elegant , good looking and tasting, with a touch of modernity... that include "sparing". You order aperitif: it comes without anything to nibble. then come the starter, but no appetizer. starter : smoked duck breast (12£) : original , excellent in fact: but you would have appreciated a little more than 3 little pieces. Main:Slow cooked pork belly ( 22£): an odoriferous medallion radiant with his little vegetables: unusual and welcomed. dessert : baked lemon custard: the crispy paste come on top, the soft lemon below. And this is the end (my only friend, the End...) : no sweet treats for goodby! If you add that the wines suggested -by the glass- with each dish are well selected and affordable, you can say it was a good moment, for sure. But with a little frustrating impression: I would 've spent a little more (say: 5 to 10£ each) to get a little more: the sense of "completion"!

Four of us for dinner in one of the garden pods. Although it was a very chilly April evening, we were warm enough nestled into one of the heated pods once we had the front flap down and the blankets on our knees - that's not a complaint - we wanted the outdoor experience, and it was just what we expected! The food was truly excellent - I doubt you would be disappointed with any of the dishes. I had smoked duck, followed by belly pork and we shared charred cabbage, broccoli, hash browns and carrots. Dessert was a caramely choux bun with passion fruit sorbet. The food is more fine dining than "pile-it-high", but the quality is such that each mouthful is savoured and not rushed, a consequence being that we had a long, leisurely dinner and left feeling fuller than was good for us. We were somewhat confused over the coffee... we thought we were ordering an irish-style coffee but were served a cold hazlenut cocktail, which was delicious, but a puzzling end to the evening. The service was very attentive, headed up by a very sweet, young european man who was wonderful but a bit self-concious of his limited english amongst chatty englanders! It wasn't cheap.... think £60-£70 a head (with drinks), but it was worth it for a special occasion. Not our first time, and certainly not our last.

Lovely hotel with friendly staff. Stayed over NY, and they very quickly helped us out when we managed to leave our spare car key in the room after checkout. My partner and I were here on 10th June and this was our fourth visit to the restaurant over the last couple of years. The previous three previous occasions at this restaurant have been sat outside and magical! Food and service EXCEPTIONAL. This time however service was poor. A starter, the salmon platter that we have every time at this restaurant was about 70% smaller and not enough for two people. We also ordered croquettes they were ICE COLD. The croquettes were taken off the bill and we were offered a cocktail, but seeing previous reviews over the last few weeks there seems to be a common theme of complaints, so the restaurant is either not learning or there is just a lack of care. The mains were ok, felt as though they had been waiting on the pass and were warmish. We left very disappointed. Such as shame as this place used to be a "go to" destination restaurant enjoyed by many locals. I get the feeling that the tourist "one visit" scenario is now the focus. I do appreciate that there have and still are difficult times with Covid and the hospitality impact, but there are some things that you should not cut back on, especially as this is not a cheap restaurant.

Visited with 3 family members following reservation for dinner. We were shown to our outdoor ‘pod’ in the kitchen garden. A lovely environment, but the seating is wooden benches which become uncomfortable after a while.Service was very slow, but pleasant. Our first bottle of white wine was not properly chilled, but the second was. The server did not ask if we wanted to taste the wine ( I appreciate it was screw top & not cork), & we were left to pour it ourselves. We ordered starters & mains, but were then told that 3 of the choices were not available, meaning 3 of my party were disappointed. The sharing croquette starter was tasty, but arrived to the table lukewarm. I did inform the server, who apologised. The crab starters were much enjoyed. The main courses were all enjoyed,& were served hot. The front of house team never visited the table to check all was well or to ask if we required further drinks. This establishment trades as a ‘higher end’ venue & it’s not cheap, but it does not live up to its desired reputation. It could be fabulous with a few tweaks. • cushion pads on the hard wooden benches• improved standard, speed & efficiency of service• ensure the food is delivered promptly from the pass• front of house to inform patrons of unavailable menu items on seating, to reduce guest disappointment The food is amazing & the chefs should be congratulated. As it currently stands, I would not recommend Llys Meddyg, but would welcome a further visit if the suggested improvements were undertaken.

Fantastic Pod DiningWe ate at Llys Meddyg in tiny lodges dotted around the kitchen garden. Each pod was enclosed and had a ceiling heater. The kitchen garden is tucked round the back of the hotel, so sheltered. We were eating on a very blustery bank holiday, but it was cosy in the pod.The food was great. I ate the vegetarian options which were truly inspired. The staff were very friendly and helpful. All in all a great experience.

We dined at Llys Meddyg on their first post Covid opening weekend, May bank holiday. I truly hope this experience was teething problems, as the restaurant garden is really lovely, the pods are brilliant and it’s a great setting for a lovely evening out. I was warm outdoors in the heated pods and loved the surroundings. It went downhill from there. We are used to eating in a variety of restaurants and knew that this was pricier than your average gastropub, but assumed the quality would match. We waited half hour to order drinks and ordered a bottle of wine. The waiter said he’d be back with a cooler but never arrived to I had to chase it. When someone brought it, it had three ice cubes and a few cms of water. I had to go looking again for a member of staff and eventually got ice in the ice bucket. Salmon ‘sharing’ starter was ok but tiny for £12. No way is this a sharing platter. Main course. Lamb was quite tasty and soft. Husbands pork belly was terrible, not a hint of crispness, just flabby fat on the top. He’s not fussy and we were starving so he ate it. We deliberated with the waitress over triple cooked chips or potatoes, we went for potatoes and what turned up was a cold potato salad?! Very weird to go with main courses, especially that there was no such description on the menu and the waitress didn’t try to explain. No one came to ask at any point if everything was ok. I truly hope this restaurant does well post Covid, it has the setting and potential to. However, there needs to be some serious changes to the quality of food and the service. I hope this was just first weekend teething troubles.

Ate here with my family just after the first lockdown had ended and was delighted to see that Llys Meddyg had seized the initiative by filling the garden with small wooden huts.Ok the menu wasn't what it is normally (we had stayed here for New Year's Eve a few years ago) but under the circumstances the food was good and reasonably priced and the place was buzzing.I congratulate them.

And lucky old us - wow! This was a great surprise, we had no idea we were coming into something so unusual and so good. The garden space is very big and on the lawn, amongst the flowers, herbs and vegetable beds sit tables and chairs, mainly made of roughly hewn wood, plus tenty-sheddy structures with heaters, teepee-looking things and probably other structures I didn't take in.We were there when it was dark and there were strings of lights throughout the garden and it was all stunning and rather difficult to take in!The service was occasionally scatty but always well-meaning and pleasant and mostly very professional and rightly proud of what they do, the place and the food they serve. The food! We were so thrilled with the food after some not very good experiences locally and, as others have said, we wished we'd found it earlier and been able to book another night.I had the pork belly which must have been cooking for hours, apart from the rind (not exactly crackling but still crispy and wonderful) I could cut the meat with my fork - love to know how to achieve it. No taste had been lost in the cooking process and the fat was there but was kind of crumbly so it was gorgeous. And it came with great slices of home-pickled carrot and fennel which was just delicious with a hint of sweetness and a hint of spice. And a puree which I believe was cauliflower. And don't forget the delicious little black pudding rissole that comes with it.As you can see, I could go on and on! My partner loved his succulent lamb, which was served with the same vegetables. Oh, and we had side dishes of seasonal greens and roasted beetroot and goats cheese - these were also yummy and well flavoured, side dish didn't mean unimportant.Sadly, we didn't have dessert, what can I say, bet they're ace. This is far too long, do visit if you can it's a real treat with great cooking and lovely people.

We visited Llys Maddyg this evening for dinner. We were directed downstairs to the cellar bar. The whole area was cold and draughty. I had phoned earlier in the day and requested seats inside.I asked if food was being served elsewhere as I knew there was a proper dining room on the premises but I was told there was nowhere else to eat. I was given a blanket when I complained about the cold. The food was good, there was no complaint there. However a Dalmation puppy suddenly appeared from a side room obviously belonging to the hotel. The dog stood by our table and gave itself a good shake, not a good hygienic thing to happen. The dog came to our table which we ignored. It sat down and a little while later a waitress proceeded to bend down by the bar to stroke and play with the dog. She then got up and without washing her hands, picked up cutlery and later served drinks and food to customers sitting in the pods outside. We were not impressed and I am sure Environmental Health wouldn't be either.

Shambolic. Packed the entire restaurant out with only a handful of staff. Waited 55 minutes for our drinks, which came in dirty glasses. They got our order wrong many times and we often didn’t even get what we ordered. Food came at all different times. Had to wait for another table to leave for us to finally get a glass for our wine. The management should be entirely ashamed of themselves. They filled out the place and left the staff to suffer, apologise and literally sprint around with incorrect orders.Next time, buy enough glasses, order enough potatoes, hire enough staff or don’t accept so many reservations.

We ate here on the last night before all restaurants were shut due to the virus. Each course was amazing. First, the house-smoked salmon is wonderful as other reviewers have stated. My partner had the local lamb which was perfectly cooked. I opted for the vegan entree which sounded weird (cabbage and other root veg in a miso-sauce) but the waitperson insisted that it was amazing. She was absolutely correct and it was one of the most unusual dishes that I've had in a long while. I cemented in my mind that this is a creative kitchen with lots of latent talent. My husband had to the cheese course and I had a sweet dessert which was also lovely. I look forward to the day when I can return to this wonderful spot.

Not perfect but very good. We chanced upon Llys Meddyg at lunch time and it had the air of a restaurant 'getting ready' for the day's business. We were really looking forward to this meal as we had heard the food was good. The risotto starters took an hour to arrive and were so undercooked we had to send them back. They gave us an alternative starter which was average. The steak was generous but one slice was so dry it couldn't be eaten. This restaurant has managed to get two AA rosettes, into both the Michelin Guide and Hardens 2019 guide and had a sticker of The Good Food Guide. Had our last meal of our holiday there. It was the most expensive restaurant we had eaten at and, having eaten well for less for the previous two weeks we expected something special. The starters were good and so when our main courses arrived we anticipated more of the same. Alas, no. My lamb was served with three large mounds of cold salsa verde that had no place on the plate, although nothing else on it could be described as hot, and my wife’s fish was so overcooked that the flesh was almost liquid. Also, when I ordered new potatoes as a side, the waitress did not inform me that there was already garlic mash included, so a lot of potato went to waste. An apologetic waiter said he would deduct our glasses of wine from the bill, but the evening was ruined and we left without dessert or coffees. The chef had agreed that the fish was overcooked and yet they let it leave the kitchen. This restaurant left a bad taste in more ways than one.

We had dinner here. The first waiter showed us the table and took orders for drink without being friendly or helpful. Food was excellent. Second waiter was again unfriendly and we did not feel welcome. If the chef would not have saved the evening this would be one star.

i tried to get a pizza here about 5 years ago and was told they only turn the oven on for weddings! the lady was flustered and rude. i left. returned, recently, and left pizzaless. the menu is a bit odd, and the staff were unhelpful to the only vegetarian in our party. portions are small and the service is hopeless: at the level of going up to the bar to remind your waitress we would like another course [usual after starters!] or that we are expiring from hunger! i was told all of the staff were new. training? not any sort of excuse. there was a rather arrogant bloke drifting around, but we never worked out what his function was.

We had a short 3 day break in Llys Meddyg. Our room was comfortable, large and spotless. The breakfast choices were excellent and the food was very good. A class above anything else on offer locally. Service was good and the staff were friendly and helpful. There was a cosy lounge and a good bar. A great place to stay.

Earlier this month my partner and I stayed for the weekend to celebrate a milestone birthday. I must say that we have not stayed in such a comfortable place nor had such tasty food for quite some time. The room we had chosen was spacious with ample storage space. The bathroom had a free standing bath as well as shower. The complementary hand wash etc as well as the Reed diffusers were locally sourced and made from natural products.

Visited for our 20th wedding anniversary. We were sat in the cosy cellar area which was nice and intimate but the bar noise was a bit intrusive at times. The menu was not extensive but adequate. We ordered a smoked salmon and a solva crab for starters. Other reviewers have commented on the portion size being small however we found both to be adequate as there was also a side of sourdough bread. The salmon was excellent but found the crab wanting a little extra to lift the flavour. For mains we ordered the lamb and dexter beef, again reviews have commented on portion size so we ordered some potatoes and a portion of chips. We asked the waitress for a guide to the size as we wondered if one portion would be enough between us but as she was new she couldn't help. As it happens one portion would have been enough between us as we were going for three courses anyway. We we brought a wrong order so while our beef was being hastily prepared we shared the lamb which was an excellent plate of food but I didn't get the point of the anchovy my wife did so the jury is out on that one. The potatoes were delicious and although we don't normally go for chips with this type of meal they are really, really good! When the beef arrived we shared that too. It was beautifully cooked albeit a small portion, the accompaniment I feel didn't really add much to the palate but looked nice! Finished with an excellent cheese board, needed a couple more biscuits though, chocolate and ice cream very rich so small portion is all you need. We had wine by the glass as we wanted a cabernet sauvignon for the starters and a red for the main. We felt the former a bit ordinary and tasted of sulphite but the red merlot was acceptable but not stunning, with such a lot of excellent wine out there these days I think there is room for improvement there.

We were looking forward to celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary at Llys Meddyg and booked a table for four. We were greeted warmly and shown to the attractive and cosy cellar restaurant. Two of us had the smoked salmon starter, a small portion but tasty, and two had the crab, which was also tasty but tiny – about a dessert spoon’s worth of crab flattened on a plate with small niblets of apple and pickled kohlrabi. A tiny jug of bisque, when poured over the crab, was refreshing but was immediately absorbed by the crab meat. For mains, three of us ordered the belly pork, which we were told did not need a side order as it was quite a large portion. One ordered brisket with a side order of potatoes. What turned up were three plates each containing two small pieces of belly pork with some sauce and a small serving of greenery, a plate containing what looked like two fishcakes that turned out to be the brisket, and a side serving of very tasty potatoes (that we all shared). Nouvelle cuisine? Thought that was a thing of the past. We all agreed that both the brisket and the belly pork were extremely dry and could really have done with a decent drop of gravy. When the waitress collected our plates we told her this and she said she was sorry that we had found the meat disappointing. We ordered deserts, three pistachio cakes and a chocolate brownie with sorbet, and they were all tasty – but very small portions again. The sorbet was the best part of the whole meal, being an absolute zinger. All in all, we felt such tiny portions, particularly of cheap cuts of meat, did not warrant the price we paid, so it was a bit of a disappointment all round.

We saved this for the last evening of our holiday and were glad that we did - such a lovely meal. Interesting and tasty dishes, beautifully presented, efficient and friendly service, good wine list. We ate in the cellar and it was a lovely room; lots of nooks to sit in, a wood burning stove and generally nice atmosphere. Expect to spend more, but worth it.

My husband and I stayed here in May (this review is a bit late) while doing a mini tour around Wales. Newport is such a sweet village with great shops and pubs. Llys Meddeg is a true gem and we can’t rate it highly enough. The rooms are spacious yet feel cosy. The bathrooms are large with beautiful bathtubs as well as a shower and the most amazing smelling reed diffusers. In fact we loved the smell so much, we bought two! The hotel owner knows the lady who makes them in the village and had two delivered over which were ready for us at reception when we checked out. The family run hotel is a brilliant find. The service was friendly and faultless. I definitely recommend dining in their restaurant which is fabulously located in the cellar / vaults. It’s an awesome location and the food is insane! Not to mention all their homemade vodkas and gins which they use to make all sorts of delicious cocktails. A must visit if you’re ever in the area or better yet, make the trip to stay here. That’s what we’re planning on doing!

We stayed four days, with our dogs. The accommodation was really good and the staff were really pleasant and obliging. We only ate once in the Cellar Bar - and felt that there was little consideration for me, as a non meat eater. For my wife, as a meat eater, her meal was tasty and well presented, and breakfasts were well cooked and presented, but once again not very veggie friendly and small portions. Unfortunately I failed to check the account before I paid - I had been charged for puddings not eaten - my fault. Overall, however the quality of the accommodation and helpfulness of staff made it a nice stay.

Stayed in the Yurt for two nights. Things we enjoyed - great, enthusiastic check in from the new manager (I didn’t catch her name). Yurt is really different, cool and spacious. Huge comfortable bed, luxurious en suite and great hot tub that was fired up and ready for us. Fantastic toiletries and little homemade biscuits. Breakfast was absolutely delicious both days. Dinner was really tasty and very well executed.

We came here in August to stay for a week with our dog. The hotel was nicely situated close to the harbour and nearby beaches. All of the staff were extremely friendly, our room was spacious and nicely decorated and the food in the restaurant was delicious! The chefs and waitresses were so accommodating to me with my dairy and other food intolerances and went out of their way to make me something delicious and different each evening. Our little spaniel was welcomed too and it was lovely to be able to eat with her in a nice area! We had a lovely time - thank you for looking after us :)

We were put off before we had eaten anything by the 'up selling' of homemade bread (which certainly did not taste homemade) and sides. The main courses were delicious and service adequate - new staff who did not know the menu. The meal did not represent value for money and we sadly will not be going back.

We joined a group for a birthday meal. The house itself is lovely with the restaurant in the cellar The food was beautiful but the whole evening was ruined by the lack of service. Rarely did anyone arrive at the table to check if everything was OK. We waited ages for our order to be taken but as mentioned earlier the food was top class. Little things that make the difference were missing. I asked for mustard, it did not arrive. I asked for a steak knife, it did not arrive. We had to eventually call the waitress over to clear the dishes and then had a long wait for the dessert menu then another long wait for the order to be taken. I appreciate a relaxed meal but from beginning to end ours took three and a half hours. Either there is a lack of front of house staff or they are untrained or both. I inevitably leave a tip but not this time

We have just returned home from a three night stay ay Llys Meddyg. What a wonderful place. From the moment we arrived, we were well looked after, by every member of staff. Our dog was made very welcome, especially by the resident dog, who looked after him during our stay! Everything about our visit was excellent- our room was lovely, the food was outstanding and the home made cakes were amazing. The garden area is stunning, and how lovely to see the chefs picking own grown produce to use in that day's menu.

Firstly, the food was (mostly) delicious. Each of my three courses was very tasty and I could definitely have eaten more as my starter and pud were particularly good. I was lucky as the rest of our party had mixed fortunes with their main course, including tough lamb heart but almost rare meat and very smoky duck! And I wish vegetables came as standard with the main, as it’s not cheap and aren’t we meant to be encouraging eating lots of veg?! It was £3 or £4 for every portion of veg on top - plain daft. Anyway, despite it being (mostly) well cooked and nicely presented, there wasn’t really a lot of it, so when our bill ran into hundreds (admittedly a couple of bottles of wine and other drinks added to the total!) we decided we wouldn’t rush back straight away, as there is actually a lot of choice in the Newport area and although we enjoyed our evening, the dining chairs were rather uncomfortable and the (apparently short staffed) staff took a little while to hit their stride. All in all, I would recommend the food but the whole experience didn’t warrant the hefty price tag.

We stayed two nights at this truly charming place. The building was just beautiful, the room spacious and decorated in a way which was both tasteful and welcoming. The bathroom was lovely and had a deep bath to wallow in and wonderful toiletries to try out! The rooms could do with a little more sound-proofing but it was clearly an old building and this would in no way put me off staying again (I am already planning a return!).

If you're looking for somewhere to stay in the beautiful coastal town of Newport in Pembrokeshire with its stunning beach the only place I would consider is Llys Meddyg the hospitality is second to none, add to that multiple award winning food which is regularly recognised as some of the best in the business by many of the good food guides. A stay at this very relaxing and comfortable from home will not disappoint. From the individually styled bedrooms all with fabulous bathrooms which have both large baths and free standing showers to the cellar bar or kitchen garden restaurant where food is served along with whatever glass of wine or cocktail you choose from the comprehensive list on offer The owners ,The Sykes family and their very friendly, helpful staff certainly know how to put you at ease from the moment you arrive. My wife and I are currently battling with my brain cancer and look forward to our weekends of total relaxation and great food we always manage to unwind and totally relax in this wonderful place.
