Les Mirabelles Restaurant in New Forest

Overpriced for average food, rude, aloof staff. Wouldnt go again. Dry chicken, cold creme brulee. Could go on but you get the picture. Not made to feel welcome at all

We have dined here a few times and the food is always beautifully cooked and of good quality. Of note is the LeFrog menu available mid week where three courses cost £31. This is amazing value, and never disappoints. The crab starter with ginger and lime is superb. Everything on the menu sounds so nice it is hard to choose. If you would like a nice meal out with a beautiful setting, I recommend this restaurant. When sausages and mash in a pub costs nearly £20 now in the New Forest, for £11 more you can have three courses of fine dining! No comparison!

Lovely setting with views over the village cricket pitch Quintessentially old English but run by Claude a Frenchman What else would you expect.? I had the special Mushroom soup and it was lovely Followed by lamb and Creme Brûlée ,not on the same plate I must add in case you think that strange. I have been a customer of the Mirabelle for many years. No complaints with the food but just the way a service charge is presented. For years any service charge was optional until Claude introduced a 10% charge. No where does this appear on the menu, the only mention is when there are 6 or more in the party. This appears in the smallest of prints next to the charge of 7% for a well cooked steak! As the menu does not mention a service charge there is no opportunity for a diner to enter into a contract for a service charge. When the bill is presented at the end of the meal one will see at the bottom of the menu 'Service not included' . That is fine and its up to the customer to respond accordingly......but no because Claude has written in biro next to that statement '10%' and added the charge at the very end of the bill. I asked Claude why the 10% service does not appear on the menu and he just walked away. I could use many word to describe how I feel about collecting a service charge in this way, but I will refrain and leave that to the reader. Needless to say I will never again visit the Mirabelle and will advise any of my friends contemplating a visit to watch out for the way a service charge is collected. Brian Wyatt

We have eaten at les Mirabelles many times over many years, often for fmaily occasions. It has never disappointed. Quality French cooking, a beautiful location and very reasonably proced for such good food.

Absolutely Excellent food and service, the most fantastic Skate wing, followed by the most amazing French cheese trolley imaginable!

Had an excellent French style meal here for my birthday organised by our local friend in Salisbury The first course was crab and lobster ravioli. It was very good The main course was skate which i also loved. This was accompanied by some excellent south african wine - chenin blanc and viognier. Made a change from our French wines However the outstanding dish was the rice pudding with cherries and armagnac. Magic Claude was very knowledgeable about all of his wines and we had an excellent meal

We had not been to this restaurant for a while, and all started well. But the main course just didn’t work - monkfish slices fried in a flour coating (dry and tasteless) with a creamy chorizo sauce which tasted frankly unpleasant. Very ordinary vegetables too. Then to find out that the dish cost an outrageous £36.50 was the final straw ( it was a”special”, and the price was not advertised). Also bread to start was charged at £2.00! Service was efficient but rather too brisk, and generally unsmiling. Lovely restaurant, but please sort that monkfish dish, and try to be less commercial and to give more gracious service.

A table for 4 booked in advance. Beautiful area in the new forest and the actual restaurant is nicely decorated and has a cozy feel too. You are offered a choice of a la carte or a lunchtime special of either 2 or 3 courses priced quite favourably. We had a three course lunch and wine and coffee. Nicely presented and traditional french service to boot . The menu was very recognisable as classic French cuisine but I felt the main courses we had were visually as you would expect but the flavours were a little “thin” and didn’t deliver that tasty punch I was expecting. The 1st course was great and the desert was superb… A lovely destination and we will revisit.

A very old fashioned French Restaurant but if you like traditional French food it is certainly worth a visit. You need to book in advance.

Our favorite restaurant, if only it was closer to where we live: has a great atmosphere for everyone to enjoy, and the team goes out of its way to make your visit a most enjoyable eating experience every time we visit.

Excellent lunch with mother in law. Starters of escargot, cod,and goats cheese. Mains lamb,sea bass and veal. All delicious. The armenac cherry rice pudding is just excellent.

The quality of the service is inconsistent with apparent disdain shown towards non-regulars. The habit of automatically adding a 'discretionary' service charge to the bill is irksome. However the food is good, which is perhaps why the owner can get away with his arrogance (see other reviews).

Outstanding hidden gem. When looking for something that isn’t pub food in this area we came across this fantastic restaurant that is a must to visit if you are in the area. We had the three course prix fixe menu and the quality of the food, presentation, ambiance and team who looked after us were fantastic. The lamb rump was perfectly pink and the rice pudding dessert was delicious. You must visit this restaurant if you are in the area

We visited with two friends for another excellent meal. There is scarcely any need to order from the a-la-carte menu because the set menu has so many tempting dishes, fpr starter, main and dessert. I began with a special - prawns cooked in chilli butter. I continues with veal cutlets, with carrots, green beans and an interesting potato dish. For dessert, I always pay extra for the amazing French cheeseboard. Say you want four soft and very strong cheeses, and you mind will be blown. We shared a bottle of sauvignon blanc, and the other three diners were also very happy with the fare on offer. The set menu is amazing value for such classy French cuisine..

Booked this for a family celebration as the menu looked very promising, and we were all excited at the prospect of good French cuisine. Sadly none of the food fulfilled the the expectations generated by the menu. To be brutally honest we could have had a better meal in a local pub at half the price. Over £70 per head with wine is expensive for very mediocre food, the 3 stars are generous and only awarded for the location. Very disappointed!

Our first visit . I have heard variable reports of this restaurant in the beautiful surroundings of the New Forest. Our welcome was half hearted . The atmosphere was pleasant but the tables too high for the chairs! The menu is presented on a laminated format ( which I don’t like) and was inaccurate as our choice wasn’t available. However the food was acceptable ( my shredded confit duck starter in pastry, tasty but difficult to cut and very much like a giant spring roll) but not exceptional though the lamb rump was perfectly cooked,with a delicious jus . Will we make the journey there again… almost certainly not?

The food was very good, unfortunately the hospitality and the feeling that they actually wanted you there not so good, never have I been made to feel so unwelcome, will not be going back.

We had a really lovely evening on our first visit to this restaurant. Pleasant unobtrusive service and a small menu which however covers all the bases. The entree options were really delicious and perfectly seasoned. The main courses were beautifully cooked and came with a standard set of vegetables which was good news, although they were the only minor disappointment. Just a bit dull with green beans and carrots with new potatoes. Everything was perfectly seasoned and my chocolate fondant was the best I've ever eaten. Excellent wine list and we will go back

We had a wonderful lunch . It was all perfect cand delicious . I can't rate this restaurant highly enough and will remember the meal forever . Thank you to all the lovely staff .

We visited with two friends for lunch on a Friday. Their £25/£29 Set Menu contains many gourmet dishes. I would have been happy to choose nearly all the starters and mains offered. First, I chose a white crabmeat and mushroom mousse, wrapped in Parma Ham, with a pastry sauce (whatever that is!) It was exquisite, very enjoyable. I continued with Rump of Lamb in a berry sauce. The pink lamb looked and tasted wonderful. For dessert, I and one of our guests paid a supplement for one of the best cheeseboards you could wish to see. I chose four very strong soft cheeses, accompanied by sliced baguette bread. The cheeses were amazing. Everyone agreed it was the best lunch we had enjoyed for a long while. It was also amazing value.

We have been here many times over the past few years and we are not set in the 70's. We do like steaks rare or blue and there should be a surcharge for idiots who do not appreciate a fillet - don't order it! The host, staff and food has consistently been excellent - maybe not entirely French but much better than most restaurants in the South East. We have eaten at most over the years. Excellent location overlooking the village green. A good selection of starters and mains but the cheese board is to behold, taste and enjoy - truly FRENCH! The wine list is extensive mainly FRENCH but panders to New world wines for those who like that kind of thing. Will come again and recommend the restaurant to anyone with an open mind.

Superb dinner from start to finish. Came for our middle sons' 25th Birthday dinner and it was excellent. Ambiance was excellent as was the service!From the special starter of Crab in Filou pastry; or Scallops; then Quail; Confit de Canard all was delicious. Not forgetting the excellent Creme Brulee!Also a great wine list starting with a delicious Chablis recommended by Claude, and then a great Rauzan-Segla.Really enjoyed the whole occasion and hope to be back soon. Beautiful green New Forest, small French restaurant. Hand gel to sanitise your hands before you enter the restaurant. Greeted by the owner who jokes and smile to welcome you. The starter I have was quality not quantity just tasted so delicious, I have the best fillet steak with pepper sauce, it melts in my mouth and vegetables cooked perfectly and my yummy desert of nougat ice cream make my day fulfilled.

Have not been here for many years but it’s still excellent. Went here with my wife for our anniversary today (sept). Lovely location. Good atmosphere. Service excellent. Food too. It was very busy but they still managed reasonable social distancing. Only criticism (otherwise they have been given 5) because we feel it restricted our choice = the website and restaurant menu have a reference to a surcharge if you want your steak well done. I see that as totally un- necessary. A chef shouldn’t be able to dictate that or need to. We all know there are ways to cook some things but it shouldn’t be forced on you. How the customer wants things cooked is personal. If the chef doesn’t like cooking things the way his customers want them, take them off the menu and show your arrogance over the customer another way!. The customer is supposed to be treated as king, not subservient to the chefs opinion of himself. By all means make recommendations as to how you the chef think things should be best served, but stop there as an opinion. Steaks already one of the most expensive, so we saw it as petty! But worth boycotting out of principle

Read some reviews beforehand, recommended in Michelin Guide, expected simple but good French cooking, not an embarrassingly poor imitation of French food. Firstly the waiter wouldn’t allow us to seat at our requested table as it was for a booking: we had booked but couldn’t face arguing. Went for the fixed price lunch menu. Pâté to start was bought-in, the kind of dog food like texture that Bidvest type companies specialise in, a long way from homemade pâté that even a semi decent restaurant would make. Mains all came with the same powdered demi-glace sauce, the chef evidently having forgotten how to use a stock pot. Food under-seasoned and average quality. Either Michelin haven’t been for a long time or they’ve made a catastrophic mistake. The mainly elderly clientele seemed to all delight in their meals and all were enjoying themselves, similar to the food, looked like they’d been sitting in the restaurant since 1970.Service was “typically Gallic” in that it was rude and abrupt, with the exception of a young waiter who seemed to be trying his best having clearly and embarrassingly been told that the bill should be presented with the word “voila”. No one came to ask how the food was. No one asked how the meal was at the end. We politely paid and left. I cannot emphasise this enough: this is not good French cooking, this is a restaurant that was probably above average 20 years ago and now has so many regulars it has to make no effort. Save yourself the heartache of paying for bad food and book elsewhere.

Excellent food well presented by attentive staff in comfortable surroundings. What more I ask? Adequate eating space both outside and inside.

Lovely location, interior decor, atmosphere and the service was very good. Perhaps a little long delay between starter and main. I thought the food was ok, every main on our table came with carrots and about three green beans and a handful of tiny baby new potatoes, some roast. I was hoping for something a little more inventive and a variety according to the dish. It’s French after all. The sauces, in my opinion, were over reduced and a bit sticky.

We have been trying to get here for so long and now we have made it !WOW it was worth the wait, absolutely spot on.We were a table of four all enjoying different starters, mains and desserts of which every dish was beautifully presented and so delicious.Fantastic wine list and lovely service .Its out in the New Forest easy to find and plenty of parking near by.It was full and the atmosphere was so very nice, thank you for a great evening.

My friend and I were lucky enough to visit the restaurant for lunch this week.The food was absolutely delicious and their set menu is excellent value. As the weather was good, we were able to sit outside and watch the donkeys and new forest ponies enjoying the warm sunshine.The staff made us feel really welcome and nothing was too much trouble.We will definitely be back.

The restaurant is in a delightful spot on the edge of the New Forest. Food spot on but service was terrible with very dour service staff who gave the appearance of not wishing to be there at all. The food, on the other hand, was really good with my fillet steak and my wife’s hake being beautifully cooked, accompanied by properly cooked vegetables. My Tart Tartin a delight. I’ve given three stars because of the awful service. I don’t think I shall go again, there are a lot of good restaurants with excellent service in our area.

We enjoyed food very much so thank you chef ‍ and definitely will recommend to visit ,but have to say manager is very unwelcoming and miserable, I never experience before front of the house like that ,he makes you feel uncomfortable, he needs to stay away from people ,but the rest of the team was very friendly .So food was the best out of whole visit .

Not been here for quite a while. But it’s still average both for food and service unfortunately. My wife and I both had halibut a bit overdone. The wines were excellent but the service a bit haphazard and dour. Probably won’t rush back.
