Wow how things change, been when it was run by the Trust when it was great. Now extremely overpriced and rude staff to go with being overcharged for average food.

We arrived at Lantys on motorcycles on a fabulous sunny day. Ten of us. All wanting lunch and drinks. Although the food was on the expensive side, I thought I’d have a light lunch. Soup of the day £10. No complaints about the food. It was very nice. The lad serving me However was moody and rude. I felt an edge with him when I placed my order. We all have bad days, so I moved on without a word. Took my outside table and waited for it to arrive. When it did, there was no cutlery. On asking, I was informed that’s ’it’s by the till’. Ten quid and I had to go and get my own bloody cutlery. He’d actually walked past it to bring my food.

I visited this place several years ago and found it to be fairly reasonable in terms of cost and food-quality. I visited again yesterday and my experience was not good. The prices are enormously high and the meal I ordered was of very poor quality. The kitchen staff were clearly not very interested in supplying a hot and well-presented meal, which was sloppily served and cold (no, it wasn't a salad). I would advise future customers to visit the ODG nearby, where the food is reasonably-priced and of a high standard. I shan't visit the Slanty Slee's again. Disappointing.

My friend and I came for a slice of cake but my car broke down right outside the pub on arrival. The maintenance man (I think his name was Al) approached me and did everything he could to help me as it was a Sunday and no garages were open to assist me. He had a look at my car and assured me it was okay to keep it parked where it was at the pub. I was supposed to be travelling back up to Scotland for work the next day but I was stuck, so he told me where I’d be able to stay for the night should I not get my car fixed. When my dad ended up coming all the way down to help me, Al said we could ask him for any tools etc we might need. A really nice, thoughtful man. When the girl working behind the bar heard my dad had travelled all that way to come down to help me (to then have to turn around and go straight back up to do his 12 hour night shift that night) she gave him a soft drink on the house. A really lovely bunch of people, and the slice of chocolate and Guinness cake was phenomenal!

This is one of the most wonderful spots in Lakeland. I've been coming here for the last couple of decades and have great memories with family of hiking the pikes followed by a well earned beer in Sticklebarn (predominantly when it was National Trust run). Unfortunately, I won't be returning to it in it's current guise after a disappointing experience. I can't review the food, as after being told at 7.15pm that the kitchen would be open until 8pm, I had a pint to review the menu and returned at 7.40pm only to be told the kitchen was closed. I was told "that's hospitality" by the same guy I spoke to before...no apology or further explanation. I headed to Old Dungeon Ghyll where I had food and a much warmer welcome. A real shame and I won't return with that approach to customer service

Staying in the valley for a week so came for an afternoon brew and a bite, preferably cake! Queued for what seemed like forever to order and a large queue behind me. Hardly any cake option and no sandwich options for just a light bite. Three hot drinks, in paper cups as no crockery available…… two very simple dishes of fries and it cost £35 !!!!! Tray to carry outside was dirty, hadn’t seen a cloth in a while Food was ok but nothing exciting I gave it a 3 as the setting is lovely but service and price would stop me going back

Very disappointed with the staff. Unsmiling and disengaged. For example, there were no serviettes or forks and when we asked the staff, they placed a pack of unopened serviettes on the shelf next to the bar, and some forks into the tray, without making eye contact or saying anything at all. In response to my Google review the owner dismissed my feedback by telling me that the staff were not rude without asking about why we were disappointed.

This used to be a place with home cooked stews and a roaring fire. Now it has no roaring fire and bowls of Natchos for £12…..what has happened to this beautiful old Inn?You are met with a sign on the door saying “please go around the side were trying to keep the heat in”…there is no heat to keep in!!!…I ordered four lunch time meals for two teenagers and myself and my wife….£107…with one drink each.If you like paying £16 for a hot dog this is the place for you.Its now all about bums on seats and they try and justify their prices by saying”we source all our food locally to help support the local community “ Load of tosh. Its all about making as much money as possible. So if you like McDonalds French fries for £5, no fire no ambience no heat….come here…

I really wanted to be more impressed... but I just wasn't. Perfect location for walkers and a potentially cool vibe but don't be fooled by instagram! It was cold and lacked atmosphere- not ideal as 90% of customers were walkers. I was disappointed to know the Langdale gin was currently made in Essex, and food was average. We had two plates of loaded fries and while the toppings had a nice flavour and were warm, the chips underneath were stone cold. We'd had quite a wait which I didn't mind, but by this point we were too hungry to send it back. I might have mentioned it to a friendly waited if there was one to be seen, however no one checked in and it really felt the staff were happy to do the bare minimum. One guy lit a few candles and sat and had a pint on this side of the bar with some mates. I'd love to return in the hope it's better as it really feels it has so much potential.

We’d read rave reviews about this place on Tripadvisor and as regular visitors to Langdale over many years, we were delighted to see somewhere new. Loved the look of the menu and the cool barn vibe and dropped in one lunchtime to check opening hours for that evening (you can’t book). We went back that night at 7pm and were told that the kitchen had just closed because it was very quiet. We were disappointed but understand the predicament and headed to the Brit at Elterwater for dinner instead (it’s great there by the way for simple pub grub). The following day, we decided to try Lanty Slee again, arriving at 6pm hoping the kitchen was open. Luckily it was. There were a few more people in and the guy on the bar was lovely. The food menu is simple and appealing for diner style food and we were expecting seriously awesome burgers and hot dogs - but what we got was decidedly average and came out far too quickly (probably about 5 mins after ordering which always makes me a bit nervous) leading us to wonder if the food had been pre-cooked and reheated - the chips weren’t very hot either. My buttermilk chicken burger was more like a schnitzel - very thin and in breadcrumbs. The crispy onions mentioned on the menu were missing off it but I didn’t bother telling the staff as it wasn’t the end of the world. It was just ok and nothing special. My hubby had the double patty burger which again was just ok. My daughter had the foot long Cumberland hot dog (she wanted it totally plain) and it was fine too. All in all, there was nothing ‘wrong’ with the food, we were just really disappointed with how average it was when it could have been so good. It design match up to the brilliant reviews on here so maybe just an isolated off night. There are certainly better burgers in the area. We really wanted to love this place as it is really handy for where we stay when we are here, and we love trying new places alongside old favourites, so will probably try again next year when we are back and hope for a better food experience. .

This was a final leg of a round hike of this area, so we decided to finish off with a lunch here. As you approach, it looks great. On the day we approached we were unsure if there was a training course going on or outdoor clothing demo as there appeared to be a lot of delegates and trade stands, marquees and even a full PA system and DJ. We enquired with a member of staff if they were open for walk ins or if it was a private function, we were told they were open for anyone. We found a table and perused the menu, before going in too order. We stood at the bar and waited and waited, the staff just seemed disorganised and the chap who looked like the manager, who had welcomed us in, just stood the other side of the bar completely ignoring us and other customers waiting. Our food and drinks eventually arrived and whilst the menu description sounded great, the reality was blight of the bland. We ate oyur lunch and had to endure an Ibiza esq DY with music so loud you could not talk. Wow, this is a Friday lunchtime in the lakes, either the DJ got lost en route to Ibiza or the management have mis read their clientele.

Having criticised this place (Stickle Barn is it's name) last year for its extortionate drinks prices, we chose to give it another go (having already popped in to the ever dependable ODG where we enjoyed great cask beers in the sun). It proved a much cheaper visit this time, however, as they had no cask beer on at all. Foreign lager and Guinness were available, in a place that purports to celebrate Cumbrian produce. Another 'Lakes' place bites the dust - but the Old Dungeon Ghyll is more than adequate compensation. Visit there instead.

This place was always lovely, but could you believe that it could get better? Well, it has. The National Trust run pub was good, but you could tell it was run by amateurs. The food was good, but basic. The beers were excellent. Now, they've taken everything wonderful about the place and delivered bags of unique character, amazing food and top tier service and experience. It is simply one of the best pubs you can visit today. The staff are all proper old hands who know what they're doing. The chef is clearly incredibly talented and yet still makes pretty humble food. The prices are all incredibly reasonable. The atmosphere is a perfect mix of fun, surprising and yet easy and affable. It's not electric fire, it's not log fire, it's the nothern lights. They make their own tipples, but don't cloud the place with them. They still serve brilliant brews and lovely wines. The star of the show though is the absolutely fantastic food which cannot missed.

This was once a great walkers pub with a lovely atmosphere run by the National trust. It is now run by an independent company and the whole ambience of the place had changed. The home made stews have been replaced with sausage in a roll and natchos! A real shame. The prices are astronomical. For example,”soup of the day” is……..wait for it..£10🥲🥲.The sausage in a roll…£16….you can not justify these prices anywhere.A pot of tea £4. However, the staff are great, the fire was going and the beer selection is good.Would I eat here..? No.But worth stopping for a pint.

We stopped for some lunch having climbed up to Stickle Tarn with our 8 and 11 year ols - we were famished. The food was great - really filling and the service was fast even though they only had a few people on. The fire...

With not being able to book into our accommodation as it wasn't ready my son drove us to Stickle Barn. On arrival Steve the NT carpark attendant was very welcoming. My son decided to stretch his legs walking uphill. I had left my walking pole,...

Hit the spot after a day's walking. Delicious chana masala with flat bread and tasty lamb hot pot. With the most stunning backdrop.

Had evening meal at the Sticklebarn today. Managed to get a table inside. Food was perfectly OK, but choice was quite limited. Staff were all polite and friendly, despite previous reviews. Would recommend.

Poor service at NT Sticklebarn. Signs indicate queue to be shown to seating, no staff to do this. When found a table/seating, then stood in line to order food for over 15mins, when reached bar to order, staff took order and then told me no...

Poor, poor food. I had the mediocre lamb hotpot and my son endured a tired burger. I expected better of an institution like the National Trust. We have both done well in life but would now be living in clover had we been shovelling stuff...

Beautiful welcoming location. Great beer and despite tables being full we could sit at the fire pit for a beer. Seemed like the team were mostly new so service was a little sketchy and they didn’t seem to be communicating with each other.

Well covid has not done this place any good. Hot chocolate a friend got was lukewarm and the staff seemed stressed out and rushed.

Haven’t been in a couple of years. There used to be a lady who always pleasantly welcomed guests, was busy and good food. Had a takeaway. Place was empty. A young guy took the order robotically. Big order was ready seven minutes late. Yellow flag! Older man gave me the food (the dad?). Had a cold attitude like he was above his job and me. Flights are available to return to China. The food was disgusting. It was all overcooked and had been reheated in a microwave. Pancakes were in plastic bag clearly bought from the supermarket to be reheated. Didn’t bother to take them out the packet. Shu mai was spongy with mushy cabbage leaf. Rice was near mush and hot from a microwave, meat like acid rubber. All one bite and into the bin.

Me and my partner came for lunch on valentine's day. I had a lovely scone with jam and cream, and he had the mozzarella and (something) soup with a ham sandwich. His soup was one of the best I've ever tried! My scone was baked perfectly and paired with quality jam. The prices are not cheap, soup and a sandwich being about £13- but well worth it for a filling meal. I would 100% recommend a visit either for a sweet treat or a savoury bite.

Hi, I hate doing this kind of thing I came in Saturday evening ordered fish and chips waited 20 minutes which I don’t mind. Got back home. Chips were disgusting and the fish. I don’t even wanna talk about it. I don’t know if it was frozen. The batter was awful. I will not be going again and the only reason I went is because it just reopened so I wanted to try it but if anyone wants fish and chips, please avoid this place. Go somewhere else Because I threw mine in the bin. What a waste of money never again.

What a cracking town pub this is. Since Steve and his team took over just under a year ago joined with an extensive refurb the place has just gone from strength to strength. Whether it’s live sport, karaoke, live music, disco night or just a quiet family drink there’s rarely a week that passes where the George fails to deliver. To top it off it’s probably the cheapest bar in town too. Keep up the good work a credit to the Kendal pub scene.
