La Piazza in County Durham

This restaurant is brilliant, the food is amazing (thankyou chefs), the service was attentive. The owner and his staff went above and beyond to make us have a lovely dining experience.Especially as another large party was in around same time. Looking forward to coming back or even trying one of your other restaurants 😊

Poor services. We waited 15 minutes for a table of 5 when the restaurant is practically empty. Once we were seated, the waiter/waitress refused to take our lunch order even though we seek for their assistance for our order several times. The lady (supervisor with spectacles) even had to cheek to ask us to wait for 2 minutes and "we will come to you". We left after we realised that they are not interested to provide their services to us.

Unusual to find any restaurant next to a Travelodge, let alone one of quality but this is the very one. A nice welcome to the restaurant, excellent sevice and real quality food. Even the quantity was plentiful. Staff were excellent, very professional yet also made us feel right at home.

Ordered in as a treat for the partner and I spent almost £40 for 2 starters and 2 mains, turned up cold and one main meal was £14 on its own and it was the size of a starter, very very tiny portions and very low quality, chicken tasted boiled, very bland, I should of saved my money and cooked... Instead I wasted almost £40 and ended up cooking anyway....

We stayed at the travel lodge Friday night. I decided to get a takeaway and bring back to the room. Ordered calamari fritti good portion but lacked salt seasoning. Ordered the bruschetta and we found the bread soggy didn’t like this. Ordered 2 portions risotto ai fruitti nice portions of seafood especially the size of prawns. But what was surprising was that the rice was not Italian Arborio and just normal rice which lacked the flavour. This was disappointing so be aware of this.

We ate here Sat 31st whilst staying at the travelodge. We had a bottle of house white that was lovely quality, a garlic bread wheel , a chicken pasta, a salmon pasta one desert £42 which was great value and good portions. Would return. Very Covid secure

Love this restaurant, my fave Italian. I have had expensive italian and it is not as nice. The staff are fantastic, nothing is a bother and you often get a free garlic bread on the house. Cherri and Georgia are fantastic waitresses and the chef always tries to accommodate any changes you request, he has also given me tips on how to cook!!! The waitresses dressed up for Halloween, they looked celebrity style amazing!!! Why was this not publicised in the press? Gutted they will be doing takeaways only for the next month! Keep smiling Cherri and Georgia, missing you already. Stay safe all you lovely staff.

I took my brother for Sunday lunch to La Piazza today.The waiting staff were all wore visors,& social distancing observed.The food was most ebjoyable,& at £9.95 for 3 courses,was great value for money.

Food good when they eventually sort out the correct order. Ordered white wine, came with red not a good start. When we turned up advised no Sunday left, which we did come for, fair enough under circumstances but would not have come if we knew this prior. Starters ok and tasty, main course came not as per the menu, salmon not as mentioned, menus stated white wine and garlic sauce, turned up covered in tomato, not the best for someone who can’t stand taste of tomato. This was rectified although parent finished his by time it was received but not the point, if comes with tomato state this one on the menu. Desert nice but service, well where do we start only 3 tables with people on trying to obtain the bill so we can leave, can not get any service, please what would it be like when it is busy. Under the current circumstances it really is not good especially when they are talking right beside you, 3 staff only 1 working, very disappointing, will take a lot to come back her, sport to say

We were staying at the Travelodge next door and booked a table in advance. We had been before a few years ago. It didn’t disappoint. I had the Pollo Cordon Bleu and my wife had the Risotto Alfredo. Both dishes were just delicious. My wife said it was one of the best risotto’s she’s had. The sweet were also lovely. The prices are very reasonable and I would certainly recommend a visit. The service was also great.

We were staying at the Travelodge next door and booked a table in advance, to save having to trek back into town on a rainy night. Mid week was fairly quiet and plenty of tables to choose from. I had Salmon Tagliatelle, less than £10 and my companion had Vegetarian pasta, under £9. The drinks were expensive though. The food was delicious and the service was first class. We were the last ones out at 9pm. I would recommend this restaurant to travellers .

We were staying in the hotel next door and checked out their website, they said they offered Gluten free bread and Pasta, but not pizza. On arrival we found they did gluten free pizza, but they were surprised when I asked for gf bread with my starter. The moral here if you say you do it on your website then make sure you do have some.. The meal was delicious, despite the mix up between calzoni and cannelloni. Nice friendly helpful staff and one particularly helpful English waitress.

We were staying in hotel so very convieient so we visited twice, both meals very very good, I sadly choose the starter that I wasnt to happy with but not anything to do with the food just choice. It was all cooked fresh and was plentyfull and tasty, the seafood parcels I choose were fantastic, so Id recommend them, and my husband would recommend the Carravaggio dish as well Staff were good attentive and covid careful, it was ideal for us

I took my Brother for Sunday lunch to La Piazza,for the first time,since lockdown.The Sunday lunch was still £9.95 for 3 courses,& they still give a complimentary garlic bread. The food was still as good as before the lockdown.The staff are very pleasant,& gave good service. I will certainly be returning for Sunday lunch.

Food is cheap, however this is definitely reflected in the quality. When me and my partner went there were many things that were unavailable including any fizzy drink !! We both got potato skins to start as there was no pate left, these were delicious. For mains I had mushroom risotto which had three little pieces of mushroom and honestly had no taste apart from garlic. My partner got a carbonara which was swimming in oil to the point where she could not even eat it. One member of staff came across rude and was even arguing with other staff in front of customers which made us feel extremely uncomfortable. Will not be returning.

We booked online a few days before going on our trip. They replied promptly and got us a table at the time we requested. On the day we arrived 45 mins early but the restaurant was fairly quiet so they were happy to seat us straight away. The place was clean and relatively covid secure. That's where the positive ends I'm afraid. The staff were not very attentive, one was even chewing gum while serving. The food was really bland, not horrible but below average and not great quality. We had four starters and four mains and there were minor issues with all of them, not serious enough to complain but definitely enough to stop us returning. I'm glad we went during eat out to help out as I wouldn't have been happy to pay full price.

Freshly open after lock down, and nothing’s changed, still good portions still quality ingredients, and still excellent value for money, staff still efficient and polite, a place we love

We have just visited for lunch on the recommendation of family, and this Restaurant exceeded all expectations.

We were visiting Durham, fancied an Italian and booked La Piazza and we were so glad we did. The food was lovely, service was excellent, there was a singer on and that just made our evening, belting out classic swing tunes was the best start to our Christmas that we could have hoped for!! Thank you to La Piazza for a lovely evening, we would highly recommend you to anyone and will definitely be back when we return to Durham.

La Piazza, Durham is our favourite Italian restaurant and we love going here on a regular basis. The food is always spot on and the service is excellent. We went tonight for my husband's 50th birthday and the staff, especially the manager could not do enough for us. We had a fantastic time and would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. Brilliant food, excellent staff and really good value for money, why go anywhere else??

My brother & I booked for Sunday lunch.The meal was £9.95 for 3 courses.The starters came with complimentary garlic bread.The 3 courses were most enjoyable,with excellent portions.The staff were very friendly,& service was excellent.I will certainly go back.

This place was shocking. The female staff were rude. They stood commenting and pointing and seemed to think it was ok to make little of customers. Food horrible. A small bottle of diet coke was more than £3 as a take-a-away.

This restaurant is located next Travelodge Durham. If you exit through the hotel emergency exit, it's just next to it. We were staying at Travelodge and was curious about the food and service of this place as it's away from the city and main tourist place. We first tried the takeaway pizza and opt for a safe flavour hawaiian and turned out to be good. Subsequently we went back for 2 lunches and 2 dinners and their food and service were great. The restaurant manager is very accommodating and helpful and take time to intro the different daily menus. We tried their steak, tomahawk steak, salmon and all were great and prices were reasonable. Will surely be back to dine at this place when we return to Durham again next year.

I ate here twice whilst on a business trip. First time with a colleague and we had a leisurely meal which was delicious. We both opted for Steak and it was perfect. Staff were friendly and attentive. 2nd night I was alone but due to having already eaten there, felt comfortable enough to eat solo! Tried this place as it was right next to the Travelodge and we had been travelling so didn't want to trek (15 minutes) into the town centre. It's not bad, but no great either. Booked a table, but were still pretty close to the open kitchen - interesting to watch, but that end of the restaurant could use some extra ventilation. My wife started with calamari, which were fine; I had the fishcakes, which were so substantial (and pretty good) that if I had realised, I would have had that as a main with a good salad. For the mains my wife had the cannelloni which she said was one of the best she'd ever had. I had a calzone, which was just being greedy. It was so well filled, but I would have settled for less, but better quality, ham, and have that better mixed through with the mozarella, mushrooms and onions. The dough was nicely flavoured (oregano?). On the whole a good evening meal, though I would choose differently next time.

Visited this restaurant twice for dinner and had 3 times takeaways while staying at Travelodge for a week as it's most convenient as it's by the side of the hotel. Had their different dinner promo, Tomahawk steak, T-bone steak and sirloin steak were all good. Also had lobster and a seafood platter and salmon on another dinner night. Their pizzas are also delicious. The entire dining experience is very good and especially with a very attentive manager who could accede to different variations of our orders. He's polite and accommodating. Will certainly go back when we return to Durham next July.

We visited Durham for a quick trip away and visited this restaurant for an early tea. The food is outstanding- especially the seafood! The staff were attentive and welcoming- very, very impressed!

We enjoyed a decent Italian meal at this quite large restaurant.... however its size can be a problem as even on a Saturday evening it lacked any real atmosphere

We were staying next door at the Travelodge which is the old railway station, and La Piazza is in the integral adjacent converted engine shed, which is a large room with original partial glass roof. Like the Travelodge the decor is a little dated (and cluttered) with loud pop background music but the welcome was warm and the staff were friendly and helpful. We ordered from the special three course meal with starter of bruschetta which was large and tasty (but no basil!), followed by a t-bone steak and a salmon mains with veg - again generous portions well cooked and very tasty too! Shared a profiterole dessert and bottle of rose and we really enjoyed the meal and ambience.

Visiting family locally from Leeds ..prices are amazing value food is excellent staff are great ..you have so much right here guys..already arranged our next visit for next month with no cars so we can have wine ..5 ladies 2 generations very happy ..see you very soon

Meal and price was ok and staff pleasant enough and it was on a quiet Friday afternoon. Will return but we were in a rush so would have been nice to chill outside first with a drink and only negative was the calzone was slightly undercooked inside.

Visited this wonderful restaurant delicious food and amazing entertainment a fantastic vocalist by the name of Christinas, she was absolutely brilliant and really made the atmosphere, a true star. We have visited la piazza four times recently. We have been in large and small family groups to just the two of us. Various occasions have been celebrated during these visits.I can confirm the food and service has been consistently excellent throughout. My conclusion is the restaurant can deliver for all occasions, to a last minute drop in for tea, the menu and specials board have something for everyone.

Visited after arriving at the travel lodge in the early evening. Lovely staff, prompt service, good value for money. Interesting decor and pleasant atmosphere. The little extras made it special, complementary garlic bread and jelly beans with the bill. Lovely starter, pasta and pudding.

Visited early on a Monday for lunch as we had been staying at the Travelodge next door. Enjoyed the lunchtime 3 course special for only £6.95 pp. Excellent value for money and food was really nice, my pizza was gorgeous! Staff friendly yet professional. Definitely recommend a visit. Imagine it would be even more enjoyable later in the evening with all of the lighting etc.

Visited recently on a quiet weekday evening, table for two, enjoyed the dining room, an interesting conversion of old station building if I understood correctly.

We contacted La Piazza to book a 40th birthday bash at short notice after our existing reservation elsewhere was cancelled by a different restaurant.

This restaurant, nest to the Travelodge, had an excellent Italian menu, and the staff were very friendly and helpful, so we ate there all the 3 nights of our visit. Fascinating photos of when it was station buildings, and a marvellous sculpture of a skateboarder all made from stainless steel items (the knees were gravy boats, flattened forks and spoons elsewhere)

Couldn’t fault the food - service was good but the music was far too LOUD ........ music was for the staffs benefit not the comfort of customers.

Quick search for Italian food revealed La Piazza and honestly think this was the best Italian food I've had. Great service and good prices too, so would thoroughly recommend. The place was buzzing when we visited so it's popularity is the best recommendation.

Ok... so it’s an Italian restaurant othering Sunday lunch next to a travel lodge... how good could it be? Well, it’s that good! Your mum can have a traditional Sunday roast and you can have Italian... fantastic! Good range of food on offer mostly Italian with the twist of the Sunday lunch! Of course only available Sunday. They have a vast menu and not the run of the mill stock menu, they are very accommodating when asking for changes and the service is good, not great but you won’t be waiting an age even when it is busy. Have eaten here a few times and would recommend.. parking available and good value for money...

We visited for Mother’s Day lunch. I opted for the Sunday lunch deal and the rest of the family chose pizza. Clean plates all round. Absolutely delicious!! We will be back 😊

Went here for a lunchtime special with my daughter and wasn't disappointed.

We ate here while staying next door at the Travel lodge . We had 2 courses and everything was delicious. My wife had the garlic mushrooms for starter I had the mussels in tomato sauce , for mains I had a chicken and tiger prawn pizza and my wife had the chicken arriabatta which was on the specials board but the waitress said it was ok to mix and match . The staff were pleasant and surroundings were nice . Drinks were average price for a restaurant. We will definitely call again if we,re in Durham.

I visited the restaurant when staying next door in the Travelodge. I had read that the restaurant was "cheap and cheerful" and the Trip Advisor reviews were very positive. I had three courses, and all the food was really tasty. For my dessert I fancied ice cream. I expected it to be three scoops in a bowl, but it came out in a Sundae form! As soon as I walked into the restaurant I got really good vibe. The staff were efficient and it was buzzing. I'd definitely come again if I were visiting Durham. Thank you!

Went to this place when previously called Sambuca and didn't like it then either. At least it used to be cheap but now you get the same sort of food but at much higher prices. Pizza was poor and will definitely not be going back.

Ate here this week when staying at TL next door. Starter was fish cakes. They were very good and came with tartare sauce. Not sure if there was too much fishcake or not enough sauce. Fish cakes were very good but very big. One would have been enough. Then had the seafood linguine. It was advertised as a coming in a cream and garlic sauce with a hint of chilli. What came was seafood spaghetti in a tomato sauce. This really didn't bother me as I would have ordered the dish anyway, seafood pasta is a favourite of mine. Really enjoyed the meal. Service was very attentive. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

We where saying at the Travel Lodge next to this restaurant, we where looking for somewhere quick and easy eat and we couldn’t be happier with this restaurant. We arrived to a warm welcome. Whilst we where looking at the menu we where given a complementary garlic bread which was lovely and very welcome. We ordered the seafood pizza some fries and it was delicious lovely thin base lots of good topping and plenty of seafood would definitely recommend it. We where the offered a complementary shot which we excepted and we had a tequila again very nice. Service was very good all the staff where friendly and happy. It really had a nice feel about the place. Would definitely recommend and when I visit Durham again I will definitely go again.

We were booked into the Travelodge next door, so popped into La Piazza for a look around. The staff were helpful and welcoming. Nice surroundings too.

We opted for 3 steak specials & chicken diane. The starters with the specials were good, but nothing compared to the steaks that followed ! Two sirloin steaks & one t-bone and they were enormous, but all perfectly cooked & possibly the tastiest steak I've ever had. So much so, that I personally thanked the chefs (Alan) in the kitchen for such a nice meal ! They were appreciative of someone thanking them rather than just hearing complaints (if in fact there are any !). Floor service from Adrianna & other waitresses whose names I don't know (sorry !) was faultless & very hospitable & friendly. A nice pint of Moretti helped it all down. Highly recommended.

Having arrived at the travel lodge next door after travelling for 5 hours decided a quick dinner would be best!

Called in for lunch, although lunch time specials are available we ordered from the main menu. Simply the food and service are excellent. Highly recommended

While away on a course I ate here whilst staying in the travelodge next door. The service was friendly and quick. I tried the beef stroganoff which was very nice and followed it with the sticky toffee pudding. A good meal and I would recommend to others

We called in here after a busy afternoon and it was in the way home! As sambuccas it was always reasonably priced with good food and friendly service, oh how times have changed since the ownership change!!

I wandered in from the local travelodge bleary-eyed from the 4 hour train ride not knowing what to expect and the lovely staff knew what i wanted and made me a Singleton feel welcome. The food was delicious and made me feel human again and the atmosphere was warm and I went back to the hotel feeling ready for the next day.

Table was booked for 7pm,waited 15 mins for a space as the car park is shared with travel lodge. We sat down around 7.20. Service was quick, we could only squeeze in 2 courses which tells you a lot around the amount of food your receive. Would go back

This is a fascinating location having been what appears to have been the old engine sheds. Formally trading as Sambuca's It provides excellent food and atmosphere near to Durham. We had the two course special and I was surprised at the quantity and quality of the food. service was first rate.

Called in for a meal cannot say the food excited me but found it pleasant and filling. The staff were friendly and I did like the rustic decor . I probably would go back to try again because it is local to where I have to go.

This restaurant is very spacious but also has a few private booths if you seek it. The food and service was excellent when we dined there tonight.

Pretty much the opposite of the last review. There were plenty of diners so the atmosphere was fine but the food was far from delicious.

Have visited here off and on since 2013 - various name changes. Food was delicious, prices reasonable but for a Saturday night, too quiet! Only about 20 people in the restaurant hence no atmosphere. Such a shame as it used to be a fabulous, fun night and filled to rafters.

Like being disappointed with your best friend !..We have been using this place for several years under its various names. Sadly the last 2 times we have visited has not been great..problems all relate to the cooking and not the front of house team,,,who are fab. This review is a wake up message ..as in the past the dining experience has been excellent..i thought long and hard before this review , but felt it was a fair thing to do , as my hard earned cash has been taken and the return was disappointing on not 1 but 2 times

Stayed at the travel lodge next door so it was really handy just being able to pop next door, especially as the town is a bit of a walk. From the minute you arrive you are made to feel very welcome. We came back the second night as we were meeting family who lived nearby. The food on both occasions was delicious and the portions were very generous, I thought the drink was very overpriced £7 for a glass of wine!!! But that was my choice to have it. I would definitely recommend.

This restaurant was near my AirBnB in Durham, so stopped here for dinner one night. The spaghetti bolognese was decent, but really what made my experience very good was the manager. He was personable and shared stories with me about his time in Texas, being that I am American. If you're looking for a casual dining experience and want something Italian, sure, pick La Piazza!

La Pizza Durham (née Sambuca) has a menu replete with pasta, risotto, marvelous fish plates and steak. But after 50 years of making pizza dough at home, I still like restaurant offerings. Chef Ramy's 'La Piazza' pie is so good, I can even enjoy it sans anchovies. Ushered to our table by Mr Leno - a Palermo native with the heart of a lion tamer - servers like Patricia, Diana, et al bring us what we dine out for. Grazie Mille! Food was ok. The prices have shot up. I know it a supposedly changed restaurant from sambucas but the menu and food are the same just double the price. £9.95 for a pepperoni pizza which is exactly the same as the £4.95 one before it changed name is daylight robbery. Same with the pasta. Like I say, food was nice enough, just can’t justify the price increase for no change I the food

We ordered a table for 10 as we had a sporting weekend away- and from the moment we stepped in we knew it was going to be a great evening, the smell the decor and the staff were fantastic from the start. The restaurant looks like your abroad on holiday enjoying an outdoor restaurant.

Firstly remember that the restaurant was once part of Durham Giles Gate railway station which closed completely in 1966 and the large room gives a hint of its past. The staff are young , friendly and well educated and very keen to please the customers. The quality of the food is excellent and the choice is extensive and reasonably priced. I always started the meal with stuffed mushrooms followed by either sea bass , risotto or steak. My wife loved the fact we had plenty of vegetables and that the food was cooked immediately afetr the order;

Stayed in Travelodge next door with @tallulagirlie Got take away due to having dog with me. Food was excellent, staff really kind. Nothing too much trouble. Will definitely go again. Highly recommended. Tallulah thought so too!

Hadn't realised thus had changed hands from La Spada.... It didn't disappoint....menu & restaurant still the same & food delicious...definitely recommend for friends family work events etc

Was staying in travelodge next door and weather was awful so decided to go there as it was near . I am so glad I did !

Me and my wife were staying in a hotel next to it so decided to go for a meal as place seemed nice. Cosy interior but that where all good things come to an end. Waiters - ignorant, we ordered food and had to wait over 40 min, we ordered soup of the day for a starter, than bar tender came and said it takes that long as it will be freshly made. Fair enough... once this soup was delivered it was watery as anything with few loose veg floating around- my wife tried and cauliflower in it was completely raw!!! Atrocious service,we stood up and just left... ended up ordering takeaway...still fuming

My wife and I had 3 evening meals here whilst staying next door at the Durham Travelodge.. It is situated on the outskirts of Durham and is approached by leaving a roundabout on the A690. However after taking the necessary exit off the roundabout the entrance to the restaurant and car park is immediately on the left. There is a one way system in operation so you cannot leave the car park by the same way you came in. The restaurant has a large open plan and high interior and many of the tables are close together. It is nicely furnished and decorated . There was a good choice of food and drinks which were reasonably priced. There are lunch time specials, other deals during the day until 5pm.and a specials board. The food was freshly cooked and all the dishes we had were hot and tasty and the portion sizes were good. There is a good choice of wines and the house red wine we had was of good quality. All the staff we came into contact with were very friendly and helpful. Overall a very nice restaurant and well worth a visit.
