The menu may not look exciting, but the service is superb, and the quiche, calamari, toasties are all truly excllent, served with a wonderful salad with watercress, courgette silices, tomato and avocado. The pâtisserie is worth driving hours for, I have rarely encountered such fine lemon tarts, just bitter enough, but with citron written on the top in dark chocolate to enhance the lemon. There are many lunch options in Southwell, but this is memorable.

If this is number 7 in the ranking of restaurants in Southwell the ones higher up the list must be fantastic. The menu is limited but they clearly concentrate on dishes they have mastered rather than extend beyond their comfort zone. The bouillabaisse was as good as any since we last visited Marseille, and the moules frites was up to the standard we love on the Breton coast. Lovely ambiance and great service.

Hugely disappointed! We had book for lunch today to celebrate a birthday. When we arrived we found the place closed! They had taken our booking by phone and hadn’t the courtesy to let us know that they were not opening after Easter. Very unprofessional and disappointing, especially as we had travelled to Southwell especially to visit the restaurant. 😡

Got drawn into this lovely little place today, we always look at menus as we are passing eateries and this one drew us in - lovely warm, quirky and friendly little bistro with great smells and as luck would have it they had a table free. Had a wonderful lunch, mussels, frites and garlic bread and my husband had bouillabaisse which was flavoured with pastis, really tasty - tarte au citron to finish, lovely food, friendly prompt service and all the while with French music in the background - it felt like an unexpected mini break to France!! - highly recommended

Friendly service but a disappointing experience. The meals we had varied. There were also problems as we didn’t receive some of the side orders. Some of our party were happy but others couldn’t eat their food. The meals weren’t cheap. Looking at the owners comments on one of the reviews below I’m sure they won’t be happy with my review. However there needs to be a greater concentration on quality of the meals served.

The best food in Southwell, bistro cuisine at pub food prices. Please don't put your prices up though! Took a friend for lunch, both of us foodies and it was superb from start to finish. Moules and the Bourguinion, freshly cooked with French flair, both sublime. Two delightful desserts, friendly attentive service, a nice buzz with a full although small restaurant and no shock horror on the final bill. These two are getting it spot on, long may it continue. In the words of Arnie, I'll be back.

There are very few good eating places in Southwell, and the food here is amongst the best. We lunched before an afternoon concert. I had the paella, and my wife the moules. Both excellent. Very attractive decor and ambience. On the day we visited, the lunch menu was very limited. Only 6 mains, 3 of which included seafood which might not be to everyone's liking. (The online "sample" menu was much more varied). There were only 2 wines on the menu - the house red, and the house white (Italian !) We obviously selected the white as we were having seafood, and weren't impressed by it. I asked the manager why there was no French wine available, and he offered to bring me the wine list ! (Why didn't we have it with the menu ?) In fairness to him he allowed us to choose another wine for no charge. The service was friendly and welcoming, but too laid-back. There were only 6 tables, but no-one ever came over to us unless we signalled. We would certainly eat there again, now that we know what to look out for - the food was delicious.

I was a guesst speaker at Southwell U3A a few months ago and they generously invite ther speakers to lunch. I was abashed to admit I'd never noticed La Parisienne before, though I've visited Southwell numerous times and it's been there 11 years. I had steak frites and salad and it was excellent. I wasn't paying, but at £12.95 this was excellent value. Someone next to me had the day's special - a seafood tagine - and it looked amazing. I resolved to return, with my partner, and try that. This time the seafood tagine looked different but it was replete with fish - mostly white fish - and was spectaular and full of flavour. My partner had a Roblochon cheese omelette, which she enjoyed. I had a lovely apple cake to finish (only £3)!! and my partner had a rich salted caramel and chocolate tart (£2.50)!!.With two large glasses of house red (Cab Sauv Pays D'Oc - excellent) the whole lot came to £41.40, excluding tip. I thought this was terrific value. The owners were very kind too after I realised I'd left my shoiulder bag there and they held on to it until I returned to pick it up. No wonder they stay busy when other places and national chains are struggling. We will definitely be returning.

Four of us went for Saturday lunch and really enjoyed it. My husband and I had the cassoulet which was very tasty and had the most meat I’ve ever seen in a cassoulet. My parents enjoyed their fish dishes (tagine and bouillabaisse), both of which had plenty of fish (there was a mix up with my mum’s dish but it was sorted quickly and without fuss). I then had a chocolate tart topped with a macaron which melted in my mouth. My husband had a lemon and coconut tart which was so delicious that I bought one to take home and my parents raved about their scone. My double macchiato to finish was perfect. Lovely friendly staff.

One of the funniest sights I remember with great joy is that of my brother in the rain trying to straighten a mudguard that was permitting a steady muddy sprinkle of water up his back as he struggled up the hill from Bar Fluer to Valconville. We had descended on the Saturday market to buy cheaply all the foodstuffs that make French food so special . Not least cod and scallops straight off the inshore boat. He and I rooted to the spot in our favourite cafe/bar as our spouses accumulated bags of “commissions” under our table. Eventually they wanted to stray into the the expensive boutique-y type shops and somewhere posher for lunch. We stayed put and had that days chalk board fried squid and then muscles and a second carafe of their by then delicious house white..

This beautifully decorated cafe is a real gem and the tea and Bramley Cakes are outstanding! However, what places this shop at the top of my list is the sweet and charming nature of Noel the owner and chef at La Parisienne. When in Southwell, you must stop in and sample some of Noel’s special treats. You will be so glad you did!

We were a group booking of twelve for Sunday lunch. Service was prompt and polite and the lunch was outstanding - everything cooked to perfection. Very generous portions of well-seasoned vegetables and a beautifully cooked selection of roast meats. Very nice desserts. I cannot fault them!

To be fair we hadn't booked and it was quite a busy night. I felt from the start we were not that welcome. Perhaps they required the table for a later booking. Food was OK but the service a bit hit and miss. Just lots of little things. Had to ask for a napkin. I felt I was being rushed into ordering my food. Lamb tangine was tasty but the way it was served made it a bit messy to eat. No cream for Irish coffee so requested a filter coffee instead. It came in a glass with whisky and no milk. It was ok but just a bit odd. When the bill arrived it was for another table but they did sort out the correct one. Perhaps I'm just a messy eater having a bad night.

This one of the best local restaurants in the town. It has a cosy and relaxing atmosphere and serves absolutely fabulous home cooked food. Very personable and attention to detail. Definitely not to be missed!

If you want to book a larger group don't bother. There is clearly a monkey and organ grinder when booking an unfortunately for us the monkey made an almighty error resulting in a very rude woman turning down a group of mums from a baby group that had been looking forward to the occasion for weeks.Firstly we booked an evening which they had down for lunchtime???Secondly I asked if we needed to pre order to be casually answered no.Off my own back I collected deposits, which they did not ask for but showed we were serious.Asked about a set menu which would help there end with the cooking, which was agreed and supposed to have been sent by e-mail, never received however technology could have been to blame.Although they said on the day of the meal in the morning we could still have the evening, they then demanded pre orders. Totally unrealistic hours before and due to this was made out to be a lier, feel stupid and greeted with a extremely bad attitude of a disgraceful woman who shoved the deposits back at me.Rude! Disappointing! Unexceptable!Think twice when there are far nicer establishments in the area.

From the moment we walked in we felt at home, the staff were brilliant at welcoming us into the restaurant, nothing was to much trouble, the service was what you would expect in a high end London restaurant. The food was amazing, the selection of meats and vegetables were cooked to perfection and they were in plentiful supply. All four of us agreed it was the best we have ever had. If in the area give it a try. Special thanks to our waitress who was all ways on hand and so polite and helpful.

We had lunch here at Gunthorpe and was very disappointed. My mother and my wife had steak pie with a sauce that tasted like disinfectant. I had the fish and chips. The fish looked grey and also tasted funny. We mentioned this to our waitress and she apologised and offered us a free dessert or drinks. We ordered coffees. Not the waitresses fault she was very nice and did her best. This was the last meal I had with my mother before she passed and thank the chef for making it memorable for the wrong reason. Dont think I will go back.
