La Casa Vieja in St. Helens

This is a hidden gem!!! We came in as kitchen closing but they couldn’t be more accommodating. Never rushed us and Becky was amazing with her hospitality!! The food was phenomenal. Manuel the chef and owner came out and made sure we were happy and well taken care of. We stumbled app. this restaurant while visiting our daughter. We are from Sourh Carolina. Must visit!!!!

Real spanish food in an authentic space, the portions are great and good choice for everyone

Impromptu visit for tea and we weren’t disappointed! We ordered five dishes between us one being a salad, the portions of tapas are very generous, the salad was a meal in its own! The food is all freshly cooked and very tasty, staff are lovely we had a lovely meal out and will return!

We go to this, our favourite restaurant, regularly and our latest visit on Saturday 10th August was as usual an excellent experience. We had the Hake special along with the Gambas Orlis and Croquets all of which were lovely. The quality of each dish was first class. Along with the food the service was also first class with all the staff being so friendly and helpful. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough and look forward to our next visit.

I felt I needed to write this review for La Casa. I've noticed over the last couple of weeks some very negative and low scoring reviews. Ok, I honestly believe these reviews to utterly false and misleading. The most recent negative reviews, I believe, for some reason, are malicious and very, very inaccurate. I believe these reviewers are suffering from long covid and have no sense of taste. In fact, I think this establishment stretches their budget from Greggs, the bakery. Now, there is nothing wrong with Greggs, but the experience you have at La Casa is like chalk and cheese. You get what you pay for. La Casa is, if not the best, Spanish in the northwest. Now I have no aligence to this fine restaurant. Trust me, if the food was this bad, I would have no hesitation to provide a negative review, as seen in all my previous reviews. The food and staff are far the best you will encounter at any restaurant. The food is fresh and tingles the tastebuds with Spanish homemade flavour. The setting is lovely and welcoming. I don't want to rabbit on, but let me say, don't believe these bitter reviews. Try it and make your own mind up, trust me you won't be disappointed.

Our experience was very similar to that of a review in the last couple of days, in that the staff were really nice and helpful and the setting is very nice. However the food was very poor. The ribs were tough and devoid of any taste and certainly not slow cooked The Hake special extremely dissapointing with lots of bones in it and covered in sauce that was gloopy and tasteless. As with other reviews the food is very expensive and is of such poor quality. We did mention this to the staff but we were not offered any refund at all. In fact when we checked our bill we were overcharged by an extra meal, which was removed when we pointed this out. Overall an unfortunately poor experience and not one we would like to repeat.

We moved to St Helens nearly 3 years ago, and this is the only restaurant we will eat in round here. The food is amazing, service is great. The dishes are a good size. We had a litre of rosé and I was straight home to bed after a fantastic evening.

Possibly the best restaurant in St Helens. The food is absolutely delicious, and exactly like tapas in Spain. The restaurant itself is lovely, and the staff were excellent. I would highly recommend the Octopus in red wine - unreal! Will definitely return!

We had five different dishes and the all came with virtually the same sauce when we came home we looked up spanish dishes and the difference was amazing so unfortunately it will be along time before we go again

The steak was tough as old boots and the mushrooms were just boiled in tasteless garlic water they had never seen butter. The supposed to be roasted patatas bravos were just boiled potatoes in a tin of chopped tomatoes . The garlic bread was like a back scrubbing loofah covered in parsley dreadful.The only thing that was passible were the meatballs they were ok. The waitress was very polite and helpful and very efficient that was the only good thing that came out of the experience. How the chef gets away with this standard of catering beggars belief .

1st time here, got a chicken dish, cut the chicken and it was not cooked it was pink and bloody and put me off the rest of the food, won't come back again

First of all the place and overall setting is lovely and certainly evokes a traditional Spanish setting. The service was second to none, all the staff were polite and are certainly the best part of the place. The wine we had was fantastic also! Unfortunately, the food that we had was extremely poor. All of the dishes seemed to have the same very strange flavour and was generally off putting, rather oily overall and not resembling anything we have eaten before in Spain and in other Spanish restaurants prior. Generally the ingredients and meats used tasted to be of a poor quality and/or from frozen. We ordered Mussels which were not just bad but smelt off and of urine! They were well past being fresh! We both eat two just to make sure it wasn't just a singular bad one, but it wasn't, they were awful and we decided it would be best not to eat them. Credit to the staff they agreed they were not right and took them away then discounted them from our bill. The next day, this made both myself and my wife ill from what we had eaten. We were quite honestly devastated as this was our first meal our as a couple on our own since the birth of our 2nd child and it missed the mark further than we could have ever expected and is certainly a place we would never recommend. It is a great shame because you can see the potential in the setting and how great the staff are. The food however is some of the worst food we have personally ever experienced. I just hope our experience was a freak one, and not one that any other future diners would experience.

Although I had been meaning to for a long time this was the first time I actually visited the restaurant. I had taken advantage of their delivery service they provided during covid. From the time of booking, being seated and throughout the meal both Siobhan and Lucy were brilliant. The food was of high quality and very tasty with a good range. A couple of our group were vegan and they were pleased with their options too. The portion sizes are generous and good value. Everyone in the group said how much they enjoyed the food and night. Im not sure if I said on the night (I meant to) Id like to thank all the staff and the chef for making our night a great one. Thank you. You are, in my opinion, overpriced. Your mushrooms were at best thumb nail size, i dont know anywhere that sells a burger for that money on its own either. As others have pointed out, your potion sizes are poor, for the price certainly not "huge" and you are expensive P.s. i left the £10 tip, not Colin, as it wasn't her fault you forgot my meal, and we also split the bill, had you bothered to check. I also think that using innocent individuals' personal details (of 2 people, one of who is very poorly) is despicable on your part.*** 2nd visit last night (9.12.23) both times at the insistence of my mother. Cramped place with uncomfortable seating. Food massively overpriced (nearly £10 for bravas, which was 3 small potatoes cut up with sauce on. Nearly £10 for around 10 button mushrooms in garlic oil). Forgot my main/fish dish, so I can't pass judgement on it, and it didn't seem like they were that arsed when I asked where it was. Tapas bars in Spain also put bread on the side of dishes served. These don't. Won't be back.

We chose this restaurant for my birthday meal as we had always heard great things, we was not disappointed!!! The restaurant itself is beautiful, we felt like we had travelled to a little Spanish village for a few hours. The staff are amazing, so friendly and very accommodating, we had a child with us and asked if their meal could be brought out on its own as quick as possible so he wasn't waiting a while for all our food to be cooked too, which was no problem. The food was absolutely gorgeous, we had a mix of different tapas plates and shared them between us and they was all so tasty and full of flavour. We also shared a paella and again it was gorgeous! Drinks were always topped up and the whole experience was excellent, definitely worth the money. This place will be our new place to eat and we can't wait to return. Make sure you make a reservation because it gets busy and full quickly. To the girls and chefs who was working last night, thank you very much! Xx

This place is made in heaven. You feel like you are in Spain, the atmosphere is amazing, and so is everything else, and it's on our doorstep.

Brilliant food and service set in a cosy restaurant

Excellent food, great service and an authentic atmosphere. All the food came out at the same time and there was plenty of choice from the menu. Plenty of choice of authentic Spanish Alhambra beer on tap, Spanish wines, cocktails and other alcoholic choices as well, genuinely a diamond of a place with great service.

Secret gem of St Helens. Booked a table for two over the phone. On arrival, I've never noticed the place before when out and about in town. Upon walking to the restaurant, it felt like a little Spanish town. We were shown to our table and given the main menu that includes beef, pork, fish, vegetarian, specials and sides. We were recommended to order two main tapas and maybe a side each. We ordered 4 mains and 1 side between two. The food was absolutely amazing for the price, the wine was lovely and everything tasted amazing with great portion sizes. We didn't get to taste the desserts and was sorry to hurry off as we had a taxi booked. Bottle of wine and dishes totalled £61. Totally amazing food, glad we've found this special place. Will be returning more than once in the future with friends and family.

The best, freshly cooked, Spanish tapas accompanied by amazing sangria! What is not too like! So fortunate to have this little gem on our doorstep! Booked midweek for Saturday evening. Friendly welcome, attentive staff, great service. Food was lovely. We had chicken in tomato, scallops with black pudding, meatballs, patatas bravas and garlic bread. This was more than adequate. Plentiful, lovely flavours and tasty meals. The house red was very nice too. All in all, if you enjoy reliving that holiday cuisine, I would recommend a visit.

What can I say about this place. The staff and food are in my opinion the beat Spanish food I've ever tasted. I've been numerous times and is definitely my favourite restaurant in st helens and maybe the northwest. Everything is fresh and hot. I can't fault the staff in any way. I know sone will say it's expensive but in todays prices this is more than fair for the quality you get. This place never let's me down. 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is our favourite restaurant. The quality of the food is 5 star, it’s fresh and excellent produce not to mention the fantastic cooking by Mano. This was my first visit to La Casa Vieja but it definitely won't be my last. The food was delicious. The portion sizes are big so I'd recommend sharing and you must try a Spanish raindrop cocktail, it's the best cocktail I've tasted. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. Can't wait to return

Popped in ealy doors before the theatre. Service was good , portions bigger than I was expecting for a tapas resteraunt, enjoyed the courgettes , but the cod felt like it could have done with a couple more minutes cooking . Nicely decorated, and obviously well loved.

I can't believe I have never been this restaurant before. The food was absolutely delicious, the plates of tapas were a really good size with plenty on them. I had a couple of cocktails which were also really nice. I will definitely be dining here again.

The Tapas was amazing.. the plates are really big & filling, we had 6 dishes and was absolutely stuffed, my hubby loved the lager on draught, and I had the sangria, wow just wow .. tasted so nice & fruity ... had an amazing night, cannot wait to return. Haven't visited for a while but this is and always will be our favourite place to eat in st helens. Its absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. We have had food delivered on occasions and its packaged really well and still so hot when it arrives. Strongly recommend a visit here for birthday/special occasions. Spotlessly clean inside. Fabulous food, wonderful setting & great service!

We had a loooooong wait. I'm talking 1.5 hrs before any food came out. Once it was out I was a bit disappointed. The flavours were bland on the whole andfood was warm (not hot). The dish I did like were the garlic king prawns piping hot and bursting with flavour In response to the restaurants reply... We have been before and enjoyed it. Waiting an acceptable 40mins or so for fresh food (which we didn't mind). This time it really was close to 1.5 hrs. We were booked in at 18.45 and only got first meal at 20.20. We did complain to the waitress about the wait on the night and she just apologised. At the end of the meal when asked if everytging was OK we said something then too to which she also apologised for.
