5* Food & Service!! I went with a friend for lunch (20% discount at lunchtimes) We were made very welcome, the waiter was friendly without being over bearing. It was so hard to choose what to eat as it all sounded so good. We opted for Calamari, Chicken Gyoza, California Rolls, Tempura prawns & twnderstem brocolli, it was all so great, hot & tasty. We will definitely be returning! Highly recommended

I returned to Koryu with a couple of friends last night, and I can safely say that it is still the best place to experience Japanese cuisine in Colchester. The service was immaculate, and the servers were friendly and welcoming, and the food was top notch. I usually go for the pumpkin katsu, but decided to try the vegetable norimaki this time, and it was just as delicious. If you're a vegetarian/vegan, you're spoilt for choice here. It was also the first time I had tried sake, which I highly recommend! Overall, I'm so pleased that this place is doing well, as it deserves all the praise it gets. I shall be back in the future for sure!

I ordered on Uber Eats and I was more than pleased with what I received. The flavours of the food were amazing, it was packaged incredibly well and was still warm by the time it arrived! The portion sizes were amazing and for me, made me feel like I got great value for money! Overall, very very good, will definitely be ordering again! I would highly recommend the prawn gyozas, my goodness I could eat about 1000 and not get tired 🤭 11/10 thank you! only thing I would improve is the miso soup, other than that everything was perfection

Super Japanese restaurant. Black red dragon sushi is top. But the pasta is also fantastic and a big portion. It is digested well after meals, uses fresh ingridients. On Sundays and Wednesdays there is a good promotion when you get 2 for a meal. Excellent service. 20% discount during the day.

This was our first visit & we were very impressed with both the food & service offered. This is a very clean & nicely decorated restaurant, which is all important to me. The sushi was superb & so very fresh. You can tell they have pride in what they serve to their customers, which is very refreshing. We will make this a new favourite place to eat for sure.

Just come back from eating Sushi in Koryu restaurant. Was fresh and delicious and Sam was very knowledgeable and excellent on giving us advice on drinks to go with our meal... We were so busy enjoying our Sushi didn't take any photos but next we will .. Thank you Koryu restaurant

Lovely ambient atmosphere, staff were very friendly and attentive. The food and portion size are more than enough, in comparison to wagamama this food is authentic and unlike wagamama you don't get a bowl of rice with a drizzle of the main dish. I had sweet chilli chicken donburi which delicious with a good size portion of the main dish dressed with a light salad. The Koryu is well worth a visit worth every penny.

I chose Koryu to host a special celebration for our family. It was our 3rd baby reveal party. From the first contact Soman provided an outstanding service. He has been so accomodating with our requirements. Since we were a large party he offered us a private room which we could decorate and organise as we pleased. The food and service were outstanding! I cannot fault them and would highly recommend it to anyone even if you are not celebrating anything just to have a wonderful meal. We had very fussy eaters in our party and everyone wouldn't stop saying how good the food was. 5 stars from us all around!

Very nice new restaurant on the high street. Great deal for eating at particular times.

Sides were very expensive and small portions. The cucumber salad was tiny for 6£ and not the Asian chilli smashed cucumber salad we expected. The beef don was very sweet as was the teriyaki sauce on the udon but the seafood udon was delicious. Fried chicken came out very quickly which made us suspicious it wasn’t cooked fresh. Overall was nice food but nothing special and definitely not worth the price.

Fantastic quality of Japanese food in generous portions. Full of flavour and very attentive and understanding staff. Highly recommended for any Japanese food lovers. Ps loved the kimchi side, paired well with the rest of the flavours.

I had an absolutely wonderful time at Koryu! The staff were incredibly pleasant and welcoming, and the food was delicious. Moreover, the prices were just right. While they don't make cocktails yet, as they've recently moved to a new location, the staff went above and beyond to make something special for me with the food. It was a lovely gesture that truly made my day. Bless him!

It’s been the fourth time I visited Koryu, first time at their new location in High Street, Colchester. Their food is always fresh, beautifully presented, portions are generous. Tried some of their appetisers, sushi, vegetarian and prawn carry, all were tasty, worth their price. I believe it’s an independent business and it feels like it’s run with real passion. Wish them best of luck!

Updated for new venue. Having recently moved to the High Street in Colchester, the venue is a welcome upgrade to their previous location. I'm happy to report the service and food are still something to be revered. Love Koryu, the food here is divine. Highly recommended by my Japanese wife and friends!!

Dined in the new restaurant, what can I say! The food was absolutely amazing, we had the salmon lover to share, dumplings, Tokyo fries, prawn uramaki and salmon uramaki. Really reasonably priced, and 20% off lunch time offer who coukd ask for more. The manager was friendly, welcoming he explained the atmosphere at night is amazing, we shall we returning.

This was our first visit to this great Japanese restaurant since it moved to new bigger premises in Colchester High Street. The new venue is very smart and clean and the food has maintained the high standard that we have experienced previously. The sashimi was excellent and I would recommend the prawn gyoza and delicious octopus takoyaki with benito flakes. The seafood Udon noodles were superb with perfectly cooked tender squid The manager is great and always recognises us from previous visits. This restaurant remains a firm favourite and I would definitely recommend it if you want delicious Japanese cuisine.

Went there with my girlfriend for the first time and it was amazing, we really liked the chicken teriyaki and sushi. The steamed buns was really delicious and the Udon noodles was the best. Me and my girlfriend Will recommend to my friends about this restaurant, really enjoyed it

They have moved to bigger premises on the High Street and it is a great place. The staff are all very friendly, the food superb, good quality and so fresh. Everything was just right and very tasty. Only problem is trying to choose which selection of things to have as all are delicious. The service style of bringing out dishes serially makes for good eating. Their 'rolls' are a good balance of rice and fish, unlike many other places where there is a lot of rice to 'pad' out the dish. A nice mix of different styles of fish dishes plus plenty of vegetable options. The eel was too die for. The owner is committed to doing things right, the fish fresh every day, the oil fresh every day and it tells in the taste - none of that nasty stale oil taste for the fried items. We will return.

Spring rolls, tofu starters as good as ever. Probably the best broccoli dish I’ve ever had. There’s a real attempt to cater for vegans and vegetarians (unlike most Japanese restaurants). Each category on the menu has a vegan alternative that is as tasty as the fish / meat version (or at least from those I’ve tasted). A great addition to the Colchester food scene

A really fine family run restaurant. Food quality and service is quite decent. Had a good first experience with Koryu, Colchester.

This was our first experience of Japanese food, everything was so tasty and very good portions. We had a selection of traditional roll dishes as a sharing starter followed by a larger main meal. The black dragon was amazing, but its easier to say go there and try it for yourself. The choice of meal options is good including vegetarian dishes high on taste. When the staff realised it was my daughters birthday they brought her a happy birthday dessert. I cannot rate the food, service, atmosphere and facilities enough. The quality and flavours of the food were excellent, made with care and good presentation. We are defiantly going back soon, I need to try some more dishes. Persevere with the chopsticks, its good fun and part of the experience.

Food was good, the eel sushi was the best we had. Friendly staff and food came quite quickly even though the restaurant was full. It's a small place and it was a bit drafty next to the window, but as it's an old historic building there's not much they can do about that.

Superb food for the price in a lovely environment. The menu was broad and interesting, without being too big. It was even good for me as a Vegetarian. Service was speedy and attentive. What a surprise! A small 14 cover restaurant that we went to for our wedding anniversary. 20% off all food for lunchtime Happy Hour. And what food! Amazing fried tofu and vegetable spring roll starters followed by eel/prawn and vegetable urumaki rolls. Finished off with vegetable and mixed tempura. All washed down with a lovely plum wine. My wife is vegetarian and there were so many options for her. I have to say I have been to Japan three times and this food was as good as I ate over there. Good sized portions so we had to take doggy bags home. Great service by the owner himself. Tip wasn't included, which was nice, but we added 20% which was well deserved.

This was our first visit to Koryu and it won't be our last! From the warm welcome to the vast menu and the fabulous food. We loved every item we picked from the menu - highlights for me were the vegetable tempura and the Takoyaki. The dishes were all beautifully presented, hot and delicious and came out one after the other so you could really appreciate each dish. We were a bit disappointed with the green tea - we did expect a little pot as well as the cup and it didn't have much flavour. Loved my lime soda - so refreshing with all the dishes we chose. The desserts were gorgeous and just the right amount - I loved the Strawberry Cheesecake Mochi. We will be back - loved it!

Absolutely superb. A great menu with a wide range of dishes - and staff who are more than happy to explain everything, to help you navigate the choices, and to offer advice. The food we had was excellent. It was all delicious and well presented. The service was impeccable: friendly, attentive, and helpful - without ever being intrusive. The ambience is lovely: intimate, cosy, and calming (and the decor adds to this genteel atmosphere). Nothing was rushed or hurried, and we were made to feel like valued guests rather than just customers. Moreover, the prices are very reasonable. We will definitely be back.

My son has been odering take-out from this restaurant and loves the food so wanted us all to have a go. It is very nicely presented, somewhat cosy but clean. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. We had chicken gyoza to start, and chicken katsu, gyu don, beef udon and chicken teryaki don. We all enjoyed our food and the portions are just right. My gyu (beef) don was excellent, the beef super tender. So tasty. My only criticisms are that there is no allergen menu readily available, I also emailed for help and got no reply. Knowing what I should avoid before hand saves a lot of time and uncertainty for me. And I forgot to ask when I ordered too and received something I am very allergic to as I wasn't expecting it. And the tea! Pukka green tea? Really? I was very disappointed at £3 each and in a restaurant that tries to present an authentic eating experience to only recieve a tiny muglet of teabag tea. No teapot of proper leaves. A certain competitor in town provides complimentary pots of real leaf tea. It's a tiny thing but made a big impression.

Went for lunch today and it was great. The food was amazing and came out super quick. The waiter was nice and we liked the nice clean decor of the restaurant. We thought it was inexpensive for good quality food. Will definitely be going again.

Great experience - delicious food and lovely service. We had a selection of plates to share between two including sushi, karaage, katsu curry and kimchi - all were great. The unagi nigiri was particularly good! Would recommend.

I've been here a few times and the food is always great. The service is friendly and their vegan options are delicious. For our recent visit we didn't have a reservation, but as it was a quieter day they had a table spare. I would recommend booking though as they don't have many tables. I really can't recommend this place enough. My only markdown on atmosphere is something that can't really be helped. Because the venue is quite small, if you happen to be there at the same time as someone else who won't stop talking way too loudly about how good they are at finance to all their friends (who were clearly not that interested either) then it can spoil your conversation at your own table. That said, please do go here and try the food. It's the best!

I went for a dinner here with my partner. We were greeted with a beautiful smile and shown a table for two. The staff was very friendly and happy to explain us the menu as we both prefer spicy foods. Everything was top notch. We both have tried Katsu Curry in more than 4-5 countries but surprisingly, it was the best katsu curry we ever had. 5/5.

After looking online for somewhere to go for a last minute lunch with a friend, we came across Koryu which caught our eye both being sushi lovers and never having come across this restaurant before! We had a good look at the menu and there were several dishes that caught our eye but what really stood out was the value of the Sunday set menu. Having read that the restaurant was small and intimate, we thought we would try our luck and were delighted to get a table. Upon arrival we were sat promptly and drinks orders taken. The Sunday set menu and full main menu were explained to us and we were given time to look at the menus. We each opted for a set menu bento box with some additional dishes from the main menu. All dishes were served as they were made which we requested and all of the food was delicious and fresh. Of course our eyes were bigger than our bellies and so the server helped us to box up our left overs to take away with us! The bill was pleasantly surprising and I have paid much more in the past for far lower quality food and service, we are really looking to visit again soon! The value of the Sunday set menu was exceptional!

We went to dine at Koryu on Sunday, ordering from the £12 set menu which offered great value. We ordered the Seafood sushi set meal and the Seafood Udon set meal. The food was fresh and we were given big portions. The food was immaculate and I would definitely go back again.

The £12 set meal was really good value with high quality food. I would definitely recommend it to others as Koryu is easily the best Japanese restaurant in Colchester currently.

We ordered 3 rice bowl dishes. Salmon & Tuna not fresh. Rice added too much vinegar to cook. Not enough eel sauce with the eel.
