Koko Coffee Portrush in Coleraine

This place used to be perfect, it had sofas / cosy chairs, a lovely wood burning stove🔥 and a huge window and view of West Strand beach. But they turned it into a big restaurant with hard wooden chairs and tables and got rid of the fire. It was a real shame, and I’m sure all the locals feel the same way. Also The coffee is AWFUL Me and my husband are real coffee lovers, we’ve tried EVERY SINGLE coffee shop in the triangle area, and KOKO has the WORST COFFEE of them all. It is has a really bizarre fruity burnt flavour. Even the lattes are bitter and strange tasting. One time, I thought I’d try a pot of tea just to give them a chance… The tea was COLD, the tea pot leaked… If you are the manager / owner reading this, PLEASE change the coffee and bring back the comfy chairs by the window!!! 🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨‼️‼️‼️‼️ The locals will be really happy. All the locals I’ve spoken to agree wholeheartedly. I’m more than happy to change this review if changes are made. Until then, I’m giving 2 stars based purely on the beautiful view of the beach🌊 Thank you 😊

A truthful review. I was very much looking forward to trying here but was sadly disappointed. We were greeted by friendly staff and sat at a window table as requested upon booking. However we were totally blinded by the sun, there's no blind at all to even slightly reduce the glare from the sun or the heat but took that on the chin and though maybe we would know for next time to maybe ask for somewhere a bit shaded. Not a fault to the restaurant but just advice if you're sitting with young children it can be quite intense with the heat and glare. Glasses came and were covered in greasy finger marks and one had some sauce of some sory stuck all over it. It hadn't been washed properly and not checked properly before putting away. Waitress apologised and happily replaced for us. Ordered food and while waiting we began to notice all around us was surrounded by dog hair. It was all over the window sills and all over the floor and table base. Also lots of left over salad leaves, scraps of food and just general dirt. I understand it's a dog friendly establishment and have eaten in a few café/restaurants with the same policy but have never been able to tell its had dogs in. So this really did put me off and immediately filled me with dread. Next I witnessed one chef stand with his hands up near his face, wiped the corners of his mouth and then immediately picked up a handful of pepperoni and put it on someone's pizza to go in the oven. That was it for me my mind was made up I wouldn't be coming back in a hurry. The food was so nice and honestly looked great but seeing what I did was just really off putting for me. Because the food was nice, I'd want to come back but everything I stated above was a big concern for me. Also a dessert menu would have been nice. Room for improvement, good meals but poor hygiene practice.

Seen the chef eating a sausage then pick a piece of it out of his teeth then spat it out and then went and touched my food. Horrendous display.

My Girlfriend and I had our Joint 50th Birthday Party at KoKo and if I could give more stars I would. The setting was fantastic with views of the west bay, the food was superb and the service was excellent. A massive thanks to Peter and his team for making our night special and memorable.

Called in this afternoon for a lovely relaxing drink in a prime location at veranda Koka What superb greeting from an amazing girl Katie, so friendly, so softly spoken and very polite!! A truly wonderful asset to this restaurant. Can't wait to return food amazing but much more endearing to us, the lovely staff who are so kind and lovely

I just wanted to leave a amazing review for the amazing staff who came out and helped my mom when she had a tumble with her electric wheelchair they came out and helped very attentive amazing help made sure she was well looked after her

Asked for grated cheese for my loaded frys as there wasnt any cheese on them.. i was given a tiny drop of fine grated parmesan in bottom of ramekin. Which didnt go with the frys... I was told it was chedder and they walked away.. it was 💯 parmesan. Other than that food was good .. Views good..

4 adults and 2 children, we all just popped in for a drink and got seated outside in the sun, it was a little suntrap and the view onto the beach was just lovely. The server was friendly and prompt. I'd like to return to try their food sometime as it looked nice.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit here this week. Food, service & atmosphere were all excellent. We highly recommend eating here!

I guess most of the high star reviews are focusing on the view... we gave KoKo another go when it reopened after Franco Manca left and it was a very disappointing experience. The food was very overpriced for what we received and the hot drinks were fairly average. The staff were friendly but some were clearly new and not trained and it was clear that cleaning isn't a priority. A real shame as the location is incredible! I would really like to like this cafe but I dont think I can justify going back.

The nachos were good but the ‘guanciale’ (streaky bacon) was undercooked on my pizza and the pasta dishes ordered by other guests left them with upset tummies. The service was really slow and we waited almost two hours for our mains. Beautiful outlook onto the sea but I wouldn’t return.

I really didn’t want to post this review but it’s been long enough since it opened now and there’s no change unfortunately. I used to go to the old kokos multiple times per week for lunch and coffee. The new establishment can’t even hold a flame to the old one. Coffee is undrinkable, even my dad who is the least fussy coffee drinker in the world couldn’t finish it with 3 sugars. Food is overpriced and low quality, really everything is just worse I have no idea how they managed to mess it all up. It’s such a shame because if they hired actual baristas , cared about their coffee beans and fixed their menu it would be without a doubt the best spot in portrush. I’m only posting this review with the hopes of seeing some change. PS dear owners - it’s not just me who holds these views , many of my friends and family have said the same thing independently

What can I say? Nothing other than utter chaos - and that’s not because it was Easter Tuesday No one seems to know what they are doing - chefs shouting out that food is ready at the pass whilst other staff clean tables and make hot drinks - in the end the chef delivered the food himself to the table Add to that the fact that we were charged full price for breakfast baps when we asked for 2 items on each bap to be removed - £9 for a plain sausage bap. Breakfast tea was ordered which was delivered to our table in a pre-made cup - all other tables got a teapot of tea - and the accompanying milk was presented in an espresso cup!! Sadly we won’t return. Could be a great place - but a lot of work to be done

We had a fantastic dinner in Koko last night (2 adults, 2 kids) The service was excellent - v friendly and attentive staff; the food was delicious, and felt like great value; the views and setting are unbeatable. The breakfast and lunch menus look lovely too. We will definitely be back!

Service was brilliant, nothing was too much trouble. Hot honey pizza (requested without honey 😄) and the seafood linguine were soooo good. Really enjoyed our evening and will be back. Thank you 👍🏼

We had lunch a few weeks ago and we were all really impressed with the food. So we went for Birthday celebrations on Friday night and the food was first class , we were all delighted. Served by Alix , very pleasant and so helpful ! We couldn't recommend koko enough!! Beautiful sunset view !!

Absolutely beautiful views from the cafe... Came on st patricks day, and they had a reduced menu. The food options for anyone with allergies or dietary requirements was not good. Asked the woman if the avo on toast was vegan as it needed to be dairy free, she went away for a few minutes to check the ingredients. She came back and said if we were okay with avocados then it was, I was a little confused and thought maybe the avo had dairy so asked about this. She said vegans may not eat avo, seemed a bit weird. We ordered the avo on toast for £7. I really wouldn't recommend the avocado on toast, it took a while to come and was previously frozen avocado, it was disgusting, it was slimy and a weird temperature. It was a tiny portion and the bread had no butter or oil and was a little soggy. The only good thing was the tiny portion of tomato salsa which came with the dish. Also the coffee was good. So yeah, if you are veggie, vegan, gluten free or have any allergies i would not recommend it, maybe their normal menu is better... But i wouldn't waste my money again.

Friendly to me and my son, accommodating. Great balcony view. Food good and felt healthy. McKoko: sauce was well balanced with the fillings for the flavour. Leo liked the sausage roll too. Other patrons were friendly too.

Great to see KOKO back, better than ever with a simple yet tasty menu, added seating and as always dog friendly. Popped in during a weekday morning for some breakfast. Both staff on were extremely friendly and polite chatting away to each and every customer. I went for pancakes with maple syrup and found the portion to be great, bacon crispy and delicious all round, washed down with a few flat whites that hit the spot. Easy access for those who require extra accessibility with appropriate bathroom facilities to accommodate everyone.

Stunning views and gorgeous interior. Service is super friendly and professional and the coffee is great. Asked for 2 hot chocolates made not too hot for the kids too and they did this perfectly - you'd be amazed how many places still give them to me scalding hot! Really missed this place when it went because of the views but it's even better since the redecorating and coffee is better too. Excited to try it for dinner too when we get a chance! I've heard great things! Due to being dog friendly this will definitely be a regular for us

Visited this cafe today. Extremely disappointed. Service was terrible. Ordered our lunch and waited....and waited....noticed people who arrived after us were receiving their food. We decided to leave and was handed a bill for lunch we did not receive. When I explained why I wasn't paying for food I did not get. There was no apology. Staff did not give a stuff. Guy in white shirt was very rude....Apart from the hot chocolate drink and cappuccino ( very nice) this place is definitely not worth the visit. Whoever owns or manages this establishment needs to address the issue of unprofessional and untrained staff.. This error was not the chef's fault. It was the servers fault who should have been more observant.

UPDATE: Kokos had closed down but has now reopened now that Franca Mancas which had been using the space has closed. This very apparent when you walk in as none of the decor has changed. We ordered four hot beverages and a scone, it took an incredible amount of time for anything to arrive and the hot drinks were made and served one at a time which made no sense at all. We had a scone and when asked if it could be heated we were told it wasn’t possible. Would not recommend. Staff that served us were great and incredibly friendly but the traybakes we had tasted stale and the hot drinks, while hot enough, just didn’t taste great and didn’t justify the £11 we spent for the two of us when compared to other locations in the area. The balcony area of Koko’s just hasn’t been tended to in a long time from its appearance and the main interior of the cafe itself just feels tired. This would have once been a brilliant location that I’d have highly recommended but it just seems to have been left unloved.

Got 2 out of 4 food orders wrong and charged £2 for a glass of milk for a child. Whole place needs a good clean

Hmmm been here a few times before, and today was disappointing. Great location of course, but the service was lacking in commitment or personality. We asked for a GF option for food and we were looked at blankly - no options in food, only a GF brownie which couldn’t be guaranteed. Coffees were pretty small and we needed a top-up, which doesn’t exist, so two new coffee was over £5 which is incredible. Won’t be hurrying back until good news of improvements which will hopefully come along.

Advised of a 30 minute wait for food when we arrived. So well worth the wait wait. Beautiful toasted sandwiches and wraps with fabulous home-made ingredients. We will return.

I have to update my review. Me and my sister with the babies come here every other week..when tourists not here my experience was as mentioned below..however my experience yesterday was horrendous. Went to order and got a rather rude guy servicing me felt rushed and talked down too...I ordered toast for my 1yo baby to keep her occupied while we ate..to which I was told no! I asked why? He said because we only serving toasted sandwiches or soup! I asked so you are toasting bread to make a sandwich? Just make me toast please. I then got lied to and told there is none! Yet he let me order toasted sandwiches. Lol like come on! This was annoying but we already had kids set so thought would order lunch anyway for us..and give her top of my toasted sandwich just. Anyway ordered a milkshake DO NOT buy was dreadful for 3.9 literally a cup of milk with pretty much no Nutella. We waited 30mins (now no1 told me there'd be a wait but heard him telling lady 2 people behind me there was a 20min max wait) so I waited 30mins and still nothing. When went and asked for food girls where rude and didn't even know what I was talking about when asked for order. After 40mins of waiting I asked for a refund of the toasted sandwiches not what else we got, as neice drank milkshake anyway and ice creams where nice I will add. They did arrive out with a pathetic toasted sandwich which they told us just to take, we said no as got our refund but was set on out table anyway. I did give a slice of the toast to my baby..but honestly as you can see from my numerous reviews I rarely give a bad review but as they never got back to my complaint see no other option. Great experience in this little gem. Staff friendly but not overly invasive- as I just needed to sit down somewhere to breastfeed my baby. Had a very nice mocha. Barista at till, male with light hair very approachable and friendly, he created a great dynamic at the till area and cafe overall giving me a welcoming feel into here, and always smiling! I think yous are now ready for your BF friendly sticker if one is not already there :) Back area has beautiful view with more comfortable seating and then a large outdoor seating area, I will get seating here next time I visit 😁

Overcrowded not enough staff to cope with the volume of customers. Coffee just okay.

Milky & weak cappuccino. 4 people in my party ordered poached eggs. All were completely hard boiled. Avocado (at a cost of £1.50 extra) was spread on only 1 side of toast. Pancakes were shop bought ormo or equivalent and not home made. Not at all worth the high price tag. We weren't allowed to order a small size pancakes for our child. Had to order and pay full price. Very disappointing. Toilet was also really grubby. Amazing views though and dog friendly.

Decent enough food but dog hairs floating about would put anyone off their food.

I actually wouldn’t give give place any stars. 5 of us went to it at weekend. We all had coffee , hot chocolate etc. and tray bakes. We just had it carried to the table when they came and told us they were closing in 5 minutes. They never said that when they were taking our money. Also a floor brush and a lick of of paint is badly needed. Will never be back. Pity, as it is I has a great location

The coastline of Portrush has several small cafes with excellent views and Koko is certainly one of them. The panoramic view from indoors and out is one that will encourage you to stay all day! West Strand, harbour, Donegal... The coffee and scone (particularly delicious)is a good choice and the service is attentive. This is a wee hidden gem with the unobtrusive entrance close to Barry's but the joy is the view once you're in.

Koko is a nice little cafe with the most amazing views out over West Strand. The coffee is delicious and there was a selection of gluten free treats on offer too.

So much potential, wasted. Coffee cups are not the biggest, selection of tray bakes, very basic. The location and view are ideal but the place is dirty, toilets were disgusting. Tablets and chairs are not inviting. I get the look and feel they have tried to go for but it hasn't worked out.
