Exceptional. Couldn’t fault it. Exquisite food. Great service. Wonderful setting. 14 of us went as an end of holiday treat and we not disappointed. The fish of the day was hake and it was incredible. If you want a treat you must go.

We visited without booking and enjoyed cocktails and drinks in the secret garden, a great little find with lots of heated pods and plenty of places to chill. We didn’t eat but the food did look good. We’ll certainly return next time we’re in Newport.

Wow. What a find…. I can’t believe the meal we just had!! Incredible food, beautifully presented in just the coolest most incredibly chilled yet friendly and warm spot I have ever been. The chef here Steve is creating dishes, flavours and combinations that deserve serious global recognition! It’s that good. The setting is just divine. Open fires… rustic rock planters and lush herb gardens. You sit in lovely, warm, heated private illuminated pods. If it’s raining or you prefer indoor dining there is a cellar bar and seating. There was also a beautiful enclosed field next door, that we let our 3 four legged friends have a run around in. The Staff were fabulous, friendly, and reassuringly professional. Thanks to chef Steve, his staff Bethany and Alfie…. And the poor nameless ;) chap on the dish! Do not miss out on this hidden gem. It really was a world class experience from start to finish. 11/10

The dining pods in the garden are as charming as you would hope, and then the cocktails and food arrives and it gets better. Some of the best butter I have ever had on the bread board, and a delicious cocktail with herbs from the garden. We visited with our 2 sons (2 and 3 years) who also enjoyed the children's menu, and the staff were charming and patient. Highly, highly recommend.

What a treat! Newport is fast becoming a foodie paradise and within that constellation no star burns brighter than the Kitchen Garden at Llys Meddyg. We had driven for several hours and were ready for something special and distinctive. We were greeted by Llys Meddyg proprietor and culinary entrepreneur Ed Sykes. Ed’s legendary geniality took us to the Cellar Bar where he settled us down with a couple of expertly prepared whisky sours. Suitably refreshed we were then gently ushered through to the Garden Restaurant where we were greeted by our hostess Florence. A poached haddock with pumpkin and sunflower seed amuse bouche quietly followed ...amazing! For starters we loved a crab, cucumber and crunchy pickled kohlrabi...delicious. The salmon was also fabulous. For mains I had a fantastic rib eye steak with a crispy roasted hispi, nutty turnip and vanilla jus. My partner had fabulous, locally caught sea bass with mustard seeds, Jerusalem artichoke and sea beet - just amazing. To finish we just lived the delicate cardamom flavoured panda cotta. OMG. To die for. Everything was expertly prepared and watching the chefs curate the final plating and delivery in tandem with Florence was a joy to behold. Culinary choreography in action. Professional. Poised. Perfect. An all round masterclass. Just great. Highly recommended. Did I mention the whisky sours...?

Oh dear. What a shame. When we first sat down the waiter was brusque. He obviously found our party of eight, which included one child, and one vegan, pretty tiresome. We had called ahead to check that the restaurant offered vegan options, but there were none on the menu. Our guest was advised to order cauliflower (hold the cheese) or put together her own dinner from sides. We asked if the chef could suggest a vegan meal (the restaurant was mostly empty at 6;15 so we didn't feel it was too much of an imposition) ...the answer was..order sides ...the sides were fairly uninspiring (potatoes, carrots, plain greens) so our vegan guest and her child left. And then there were six... We ordered fish and one order of pork. The waiter got the order wrong and brought multiple orders of pork ..so one of our guests ate alone, while the others waited for their food (to be fair, the other server, a lovely waitress, did offer to return that meal and bring all the food at the same time, but our guest was hungry and needed to eat.). The waiter did not apologize and he continued to ignore us for most of the evening. Perhaps chastened by his mistakes, he took orders at the tables around us, shouting them back to customers at full volume. The lovely romantic setting lost its lustre in the face of his boorishness. There were three servers working that evening and I need to point out that the two other waitresses were very solicitous and extremely accommodating. I got the impression they had been hired to compensate for his gruff ineptitude. The sea bass and pork were both delicious. Perfectly cooked. The sides were very good. Would certainly recommend the food, and the setting --but the whole experience was marred by one very rude waiter.

We were looking for a dog friendly, child friendly place to eat after packing up our tent; and before going home from our holiday. We hadn't booked and they fitted us in. Friendly is the word of the evening. All the staff were very friendly. The owners were lovely. The food was fantastic and my dog and child were very welcome. The garden is spectacular, worth a visit just for that! A very pleasant visit. Highly recommend it and will definitely be back next year. Ps Scampi loved the chicken you gave her!

Sad to say we have missed this place in our last two visits to Newport but tonight we put this right. Two large gin and tonics put us in the mood and then we ordered flatbread as a starter followed by lobster and for dessert we had Eton mess washed down with an excellent Loire wine called Wally! Absolutely wonderful meal reasonably priced and we have booked to go back there this coming Friday!

Arrived around 4pm, it was quiet but it looked clean and friendly. We have a pot of tea, a latte and a hot chocolate, all were very good. My wife was disappointed they didn’t offer a cream tea (scones with cream and jam) but we have chocolate cake and lemon drizzle slice and both were very tasty. Facilities were clean and the service was efficient. Definitely worth a visit

We were here for a wedding. The whole hotel was turned over for the event, with the wedding taking place in one part and other parts of the event being held in other areas. The main meal, speeches, drinks and dancing took place in the Kitchen Garden, a sort of advanced conservatree with a bar and kitchen attached, and with gardens outside. The food and service were excellent. Also, the owners and staff helped with everything they could without any problems. A great place for such a event.

Stopped for lunch here after visiting the Carreg Coetan Arthur. The setting is superb with indoor and garden dining. There are even covered picnic tables in case of a shower. We had the free range chicken with couscous and the fried sea bass on a bed of quinoa salad. For dessert we had the dark chocolate carmel ganache with raspberries. This was one of the best lunches we enjoyed in Wales. The staff were well informed and attentive. Highly recommended!

We had an extended family group join for dinner at the Kitchen Garden, situated in this historic (tiny) hotel on the main street in Newport. Despite our arriving about 20 minutes late (we were traveling a few miles), we were welcomed to the bar for a drink and then on to our lovely table setting for dinner. There was no rush or pressure: it was a one-seating evening and we were grateful for that as we hadn't seen our friends for quite some time. Among our group, we tried vegetarian, fish-dishes, steaks. The timing was excellent, the pace perfect and the food was absolutely perfectly prepared. Our waitress was expert and kept a skilled eye to ensure this reunion went to plan. We had a lovely evening and hope to dine here in the future when an occasion arises. Thank you to the team at Llys Meddyg for a superb evening.

Ed and Louise Sykes fabulous Kitchen Garden remains central to our love of the areas cuisine. I had a terrific and very good value bouillabaisse while my partner had a superb rump steak. To follow, a delicious and beautifully presented baked peaches. All simply fantastic. It tasted as good as it looked. Lovely service throughout. Bravo!

Tried this place a few nights ago-what a pretty place.Lovely internal restaurant but much prettier outside in the garden area with flowers growing all around us and staff putting up summery bunting for a wedding party the next day.It looked enchanting. We chose to sit through a far archway at the end of the garden-lovely private spot.Friendly waitress brought us menu-varied , using local produce, all sounded delicious.Ordered drinks, another waitress brought them, promptly broke the prossecco glass all over table, soaking my husbands clothes, which she didnt notice, until she returned with cloth, to find him standing mopping himself. Accidents do happen so hey ho.Food arrived-was all really good-lamb, welsh rump steak, welsh sausages delicious-couldnt fault it.Excellent.Decided to have desserts-asked for menu-we waited-we waited -we waited, Eventually menus arrived-we chose-and we waited, waited, waited, and then gave up !!!

No te arrepentirás.

I had dinner at this restaurant with 2 family members and a friend. The place was delightful with a very buzzy saturday night atmosphere. In spite of it being busy the service was attentive and the waitress friendly. We started our evening in the beautiful garden, where we had a drinks, bread and olives - all very relaxing and enjoyable. We moved into the restaurant to have our meal. I had the lobster, which I thought very good value as it was delicious, and the Eton Mess for pudding was to die for.We lingered over coffee to enjoy the last moments of a really special evening.

We visited this restaurant for Sunday lunch over the August bank holiday weekend. The dining room is light and airy with a very relaxed feel, just our kind of place so we were hoping for good things. When we arrived there were a number of parties in the garden but the dining room was fairly empty. Even so, it took a while to be asked what we wanted to drink as there were only two waiting staff and they were trying their best to keep everone in the garden happy. The drinks took a while to arrive, but were nice enough when they did.I ordered the smoked salmon starter, which came as three tiny slices, cut straight down through the fillet, and not very thicky at that. The fish itself was lovely, but it was a most parsimonious helping. The plate came with no bread or toast, and bread had not been offered to the table, so I scrounged some from my partner who had ordered mackeral pate. He seemed to have plenty of pate, which I tasted and was very nice. Our main courses arrived in bowls. Why anyone thinks that it is a good idea to serve a roast dinner in a bowl I do not know, maybe to hide the lack of food? My meal (roast rolled belly pork) consisted of one small thin slice of pork which was chewy and virtually tasteless, one small boiled potato and one which I assume was supposed to be roast, but was very pale and not at all crispy, one sliver of carrot, another of roast parsnip, which had suffered the same fate as the 'roast; potato, a small spoonful of creamed leeks, some peas mixed with very crunchy white cabbage and two slices of virtually raw courgette. My partner chose the beef, which was a thin slice off of a roast sirloin joint, very nicely cooked (rare), but with quite a lot of the fat left on. He was lucky enough to be given very good Yorkshire pudding, and to be honest by now I was feeling a bit left out as there was nothing on my plate (stuffing, apple sauce?) to accompany my pork, nor was it offered separately as mustard was for the beef. To be honest, by this stage I was so disappointed with my meal I did not think to ask. We decided not to order desserts. This is obviously not a place to eat if you are hungry, and there were some slip ups with the sourcing and cooking of the ingredients. The smoked salmon starter is very expensiive for so little fish and at £12 I think the main was not good value. This is such a shame as the location is lovely, and we were hoping to be able to support a new local venture, sadly we are unlikely to return.

we decided to treat ourselves to a meal out during our 2 week holiday in wales, and went to the kitchen garden. on our arrival, someone came out of the kitchen and nearly collided into us (the kitchen door is right next to the entrance with people walking in and out). we asked for a table for 3, and the lady said she needs to check if they had availability. she returned and showed us to our table. the waitress then came with the menu, but straight away said that several things on the menu were not available!! we considered leaving then, as it limited what could be ordered for our son, but unfortunately, decided to stay(and we were there for an early lunch when they shouldn't be running out of dishes!) anyway, we ordered, and one of the dishes was the days special- market fish- sea bass- served with various sides at £15. our food arrived. the sea bass was not even a fillet, but just the tail end, a very small piece of fish. when you are paying £15 for a main dish you do expect a reasonable sized piece of fish. when we complained, we were told that is the normal portion size. we eat out a lot, and I can tell you that for £15 a dish you deserve a much larger bit of fish than what was presented to us! on complaining we were asked- 'well what do you want, we can give you some more fish or reduce the cost of the dish'. so we asked for more fish, but the lady soon returned saying that the chef was preparing the food for a large party that had ordered and was unable to do our fish!! we got the impression they had run out of fish, like several other things on the menu, and they were trying to fob us off with less than half the size of fish we should have had! anyway, we paid £10 for the dish, and left with half full stomachs! on our way out, although we had just vacated a table for 4, 4 new arrivals without a booking were turned away- perhaps they realised they could not get away with serving half dishes and charging full prices for them! my advise, a rip off, poor service. chose another place!!

We arrived in Newport only to find everywhere booked up (it was a Friday evening in the peak season). The staff at The Kitchen Garden managed to squeeze us in and warned us we'd have to wait at least 20 minutes. We were happy to wait.In fact, they exceeded their promise and we were served in not much more than ten minutes with some lovely fresh and interesting food. The staff were happy and friendly despite being busy. The ambience was good and I'd certainly go back a gain.

We felt very lucky to get a recommendation for this lovely cafe from our b&b hostess. It is a really nice space with local art and boho decor, specials chalked up on boards and very friendly service. They're doing their best to use local ingredients and our humus and their own pickled cockles were great. My chowder was really good and benefitted from lovely salad leaves and new potatoes. Our cheese board was a little samey we thought though great biscuits home made chutney too, just a great hard welsh local cheese would have finished it off nicely - seemed a bit of an afterthought. Didn't detract from a really pleasant evening with a newish enterprise that you are really rooting for ( vegetables - see what I did there?). They also know how to make a great cappuccino which of course is a massive plus point.

This is a charity run church business. The welcome is always warm. The food is freshly prepared and the prices are reasonable. Although this is a Christian run cafe religion isn't thrust upon you. My family goes there regularly. Overall a worm, welcoming cafe.
