The service was very good and the Peking duck was so authentic. It made me feel like I was back in China for a moment.

Booked this with friends. Service was good at the beginning. Ordered set menu and everything arrived promptly. However the crispy duck is not crispy and arrived ready shredded with no skin and is dry and tasteless. Clearly bought in. And worst of all we had to ask for chopsticks in a Chinese restaurant! We sat for a while without being offered the dessert menu. When we asked we were told there was none as the chef had gone home! And then told do you expect him to stay late for you!!

Always come here for chinese food in Newcastle, prefer coming on an evening for the full menu. Friendly helpful staff and good food.

Honestly one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever been to. The staff and service is excellent. The food is excellent value for money.

Husband came last night with two work colleagues, and he enjoyed it so much that he brought me again tonight and we had a wonderful meal. Waitress was this lovely and radiant pregnant lady that, we found out, was also from Edinburgh - she was super nice! Will happily come back whenever we visit Newcastle again.

Me and mam are regulars. Multi year patrons. Average is around munching there around three times a year. Always a warm welcome. Food’s familiar and rewarding. Value is excellent. Service - as I indicated above - is friendly and efficient. It’s always a reassuring lunch here. Man and I enjoy that it’s relaxed, the front of house crew are always good, and the bill arrives and you’re like, wow. We’ll be back before new year.

Came here last year and the food was amazing. Not sure if it was an off day but it all seemed tasteless even the prawn crackers were stale. Disappointing

We found ourselves staying in Chinatown so fancied eating Chinese food on one night of our stay. The restaurant was inviting, spacious and attractively laid out. The menu was comprehensive. We opted for one of the set meals, which was delicious. We had a couple of bottles of the house wine, which was reasonably priced and very good. The service was excellent.

Best Chinese restaurant on Stowell Street

Don’t blame the restaurant for the review, but more trip advisor for wasting our time! Went to visit based on trip advisor’s recommendations but when we arrived realised it has a 2 star food hygiene rating, obviously never going to eat at anywhere with a rating like this and there is serious food hygiene concerns.. trip advisor should not be recommending any place with serious food hygiene concerns and also the restaurant should be sorting this out! 2 stars is unacceptable and as someone who has worked in places that get inspected I’m very aware of just how bad somewhere is to get 2 stars… I wouldn’t eat at a 2 star if it was free! 3 stars maybe if I was drunk but would avoid any food that could be dodgy .. only 4 and 5 stars are acceptable

A great night out again, upstairs for a change which was a surprise. All in all the four of us out for an evening of food thoroughly enjoyed the food and service. Nothing startling to write about, but simple to say everything was enjoyable, quality of food, service and drinks. Good value also in a nice setting. We always go to King Neptune, it has never let us down.

Fab food at reasonable price. The service here is outstanding. We had the Pearl banquet for 2 (to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary). More than enough food for 2 people, and all of it was fresh and flavoursome. Great atmosphere, but must mention the great service again.

I was aware that this restaurant has been around for many years but I had never given it a try until recently. We went on a Saturday evening at 9pm and it was maybe half full. I had phoned to book a couple of days in advance for 9.30pm but was told that it was a bit late for them and could we bring it forward to 9. While we were there people were coming in after 9.30 without any problem. The food was very good and the vegetable spring rolls were the best We have ever had. Spare ribs in Cantonese sauce were also great. For mains I had sliced lamb in house special curry sauce and my partner had stir fried king prawns in green pepper and black bean sauce along with egg fried rice. Both mains were delicious. Along with a glass of nice white wine and a lager the bill came to £60 which I thought was decent value for money. Staff were really nice and attentive without being overbearing. All in all, we had a good night and we will be back again maybe even at 9.30 or later! 😀

In the street famous for it's Chinese restaurants you'd be hard pressed to do better than here,nicely decorated,attentive but not too over the top service and great food.

Love this place..called in Monday evening didn't book but there was quite a few in...between us we had ribs and won tons both very nice..then we had chicken stir fry and a chicken in Cantonese ..plus noodles and bean sprouts...all lovely...small beer and a large wine £60....the staff here are so lovely and very approachable...wouldn't go anywhere else....can't wait to return.

Maybe the oldest but certainly not the best. Old fashioned "English" Chinese with totally bland dishes. The ingredients are good, fresh shrimp, good char sui, but put together apparently without though of the actual taste. imagine black bean shrimp being totally tasteless!! When I go to a Chinese restaurant I want to taste China in all its flavours.

Staff were very friendly and the service was good. Food came quick and was lovely. Would definitely visit again when in the area.

Absolutely loved this place and would highly recommend it to anyone. Such an amazing vegetarian selection so inventive and lots of vegetarian meats. Service was quick, friendly, attentive and professional. We had a good chat and laugh with our waitress. She was so kind and understanding with my Brother who is disabled. The food was so delicious, I have never tasted better. The tofu was superbly cooked, light and tasty. Huge portions and well presented. Would highly recommend the Shriaz plum blend wine. It was a beautiful rich, jammy taste which accompanied the food superbly. My boyfriend, Brother and friend adores their meat dishes and ate it all in silence it was that good haha. Definitely would go again. Cannot praise the food or staff highly enough.

We were four and my wife and I were just over three weeks into our tour of England yet it was only the third Chinese meal we’re had. They sure are generous hosts and the food brought me back to the good old days of tasty Chinese fast food. I’ve no photos of the food as my elderly iPhone ran out of power as we arrived, so these gentle good folks charged it while we dined. We opted for a set meal as it gave us duck & pancakes as well as chicken & sweetcorn soup, four main meals, a sweet & sour chicken, a beef & black bean, a chicken satay and a King prawn dish as well as fried rice. We were given a huge portion of very good quality prawn crackers on arrival. We were so hungry we polished them in no time and a similar huge portion was served up with a smile. We started with the steaming hot soup and I kid you not there had to be a gallon of it, and it was good. On delivery the server gave us our first portion thereafter we were left to our own devices but despite our best efforts some soup went back. Next the duck and pancakes with cucumber and spring onion again we didn’t finish all the pancakes. We had a 10 minute pause then the lazy Susan kicked back into action for the mains. The four main dishes were accommodated by a huge portion of fried rice, similarly on delivery, the first portion was doled out to us. Once again some rice went back. We chatted drank and joked the night away and then we realised all other diners like most of our food had gone so we called it a night and got gone too. We had beers, wine and on as well the set meal dishes we ordered separately portions of ribs, fried cashew nuts, seaweed and a salted chilli king prawn. I’d quietly handed over £200 at the start of the night, to the staff, to thwart our hosts paying. That worked perfectly and I was surprised to get change at the end of the meal. It’s not haute cuisine yet it was a great experience and this place is worth support.

Repeat reviewer. Me and mam again. Set lunch. Very warmly greeted and looked after by our server (from Edinburgh). Love good service me. Anyway, the pics tell the story of our familiar and comforting food. Quite delightful. And for sure the set meal price had to increase - there’s inflationary pressure in most layers of the restaurant industry - but it’s still very good value for money. It really is. A few different starters, main with choice of rice, and coffee / tea or ice cream to end on. And I quite like the decor. Mam and I both wish the server from Edinburgh the best of luck for the big news in the not too distant future!!. I’m sure she’ll know what I mean. We were happy to leave a tip. Anyway. We've been her a few times before and this time did not disappoint. We had hot and sour soup, mixed platter, sizzling steak and salt, and pepper chicken with rice. The steak was so tender and came with lots of fresh peppers and onions. The chicken was addictive. Service was super friendly and attentive but we weren't rushed. Will return

My partner took me out for a treat today. The food was quite good and their service is extremely great. Tracy, one of the staff was very helpful, in fact all staff I met were very cheerful unlike many Chinese reatuarants around the area. I tried Chicken cantonese style, it was a bit too sweet for my taste but I just remembered after ordering that Cantonese sauce is always sweet and tangy sauce. I cannot find anything to fault about this place and I would like to go back more often if I am in town.

We love to go here for a special occasion , normally get the Jade banquet with the fresh prawn for a starter 😋

Husband enjoyed his main dish of king prawn Szechuan sauce. My food was not so good. The cashew nuts in sweet and sour sauce had batter that was too heavy and tasted strange (as a vegan dish I hope this is not fried with fish and meat but suspect it was by the taste). I really craved spring rolls but was told they have egg in them. I queried this as I make them myself and cook Chinese food a lot but the waiter was adamant they weren’t vegan due to egg in the spring roll pastry. We ordered salt and pepper tofu instead. This dish was salty, bland and not as good as my local takeaways. I didn’t eat much. The waiter then said the chef had affirmed the spring rolls had no egg but trust him they do really. For anyone with food allergies be careful here as there’s confusion about ingredients. Service was a touch slow and our table was too close to another couple upstairs so we could hear everything they said very clearly. I felt very uncomfortable. We had our post wedding celebration meal here in the 1990s so we really wanted to come here on our trip to Newcastle but sadly won’t return again.

Starters were really good, main courses so so. Service was really excellent, attentive and very polite. Overall, decent value with the meal deal, and complimentary prawn crackers and spring rolls.

Was looking at the menu when a couple came out saying how lovely it was, so decided to try for first time. We had the 3 course lunch each £14.90 had Perkins style spare ribs. 2 chicken and beef slices in house curry fried rice with a side of chips. 4 spring rolls. The spring rolls i would say was the best thing I eat. Curry was watery bland no taste of curry chips were bland i would give it a 4 out of 10. The staff were really friendly very busy. I would not be going back in a hurry.

Round corner from our hotel. Visited with 5 friends after reading other reviews. Food was great and service was very attentive and friendly. We turned up without booking and although they were busy sat us on our table within a few minutes. Would definitely recommend a visit

We went for a meal after visiting the nearby opera house. The staff were very attentive, seeing to our every need. Though it was a Monday night we were well looked after. The options were great and we left full and satisfied. I would highly recommend a visit!

The crispy spring rolls starter surprised me as they were mini spring rolls. The menu did not suggest that. The sweet and sour sauce was brought out very early before the spring rolls. When the rolls were brought out I did suggest that there might be a skin on the sauce as it had stood for a while. It hadn't but it was cold by the time I finished the rolls. The main course (king prawns with green peppers and black bean sauce along with egg fried rice) was fine but the prawns had a fork and spoon in them. The handles would have been sticky and would have made my hands the same. I did point out both issues at the restaurant. The apple juice was a very acceptable alternative to the tomato juice which I asked about but which they didn't have. I did notice that people on two nearby tables had to ask for drinks they had ordered some time earlier. A nice touch, late on, was that a server said she'd bring me a hot towel for my hands. She did and it saved me a trek to the toilets to wash my sticky hands.

How would you describe today’s meal? I personally think that today’s dishes are all stir-fried with the same sauce and taste exactly the same, but with different ingredients? This is not how Chinese food should be presented... Should they not agree with this in the UK? Eat Chinese food, order different meals, and end up eating Chinese food that tastes the same? Also, the rice is too dry, like old rice with no moisture. We should really use better rice and ingredients. Since you want to open a Chinese restaurant, you should make a contribution to the Chinese nation instead of... losing face (please invite the person in charge of the restaurant? Pay attention to this issue?) (The four British guests next door had a satisfactory discussion about the meal because none of them finished the meal)

Absolutely brilliant food! I had visited today with my family to try their lunch menu, and i don’t regret one bit. As a northern family we do enjoy finding cheap food that’s also good and hearty and King Neptune did NOT disappoint. Their service was impeccable and we felt fully attended to at all times. The food was brilliant! and very cost effective. I had deep fried chicken in sweet and sour sauce and my taste buds were blessed, paired with a coca cola. I couldn’t recommend this place more and i think everyone should visit!!

Another great visit. It never lets us down and is a very comforting, homely restaurant which we will return to until we have a mediocre meal before trying others. It is best to go where you know you will have good eats. as I said , a great place to eat out, right in the middle of china town with friendly hosts. We opted for the set meal for 3 which consisted of soup, then duck , then 3 different main courses of which we asked for one of them to be changed to what we preferred which was not on the list, which was met with a positive yes instantly. Just great. The rice and prawn crackers, though not part of the main things in the meal were lovely also. All in all , we will be back. Pretty son actually. it is a very nice warming, slightly authentic old fashioned restaurant with great food.

This is our go to Chinese restaurant when visiting Newcastle. We had already booked a table over the phone a few week prior. When we arrived they couldn't find our booking. They eventually did, but I don't actually think they did - I think they just squeezed us in because they knew they'd made a mistake. There is plenty of choice on the menu. The prices are reasonable but there is a 10% service charge in December. The food was brought out quite quickly. They asked if we wanted chopsticks but we said cutlery was fine. They brought out our 5 years old daughter some chopsticks stuck together with an elastic band for her to try. She absolutely loved using them! The food was really good.

We had not been for a Chinese sit down for years so we thought we'd pay Stowell Street a visit before heading off to a comedy show. I have to say that the service was great, however, the food was bang average, which was a pity as this restaurant was the go to in the 90's. We had 2 King Prawn dishes, which you got plenty of and a starter of crispy aromatic duck (1/4). Although I enjoyed the duck (as I always do) it was unfortunately not crispy, the Mrs was therefore not too keen. The Szechuan and Black Pepper King Prawn was very bland and I mean bland, so overall, bang average. We were asked how the meal was to which we replied 'it was fine'. I know when I've had a very good meal, I'll make sure that the staff know how good it was but unfortunately not this time around. Perhaps my expectations were too high and that this restaurant is still the best (given the reviews) but I think that we'll stick to our local takeaway next time, half the price for double the taste.

Enjoyed as great meal in nice surroundings. Staff pleasant and attentive. Food top class would recommend Cantonese filet steak and sweet and sour king prawn. Not too pricey for city centre and definitely value for money. Would love to visit again!

Food was OK we had the new year banquet at 34 a head then a service charge added on top food was average service was great venue had gone quite due to the time. I would go again but not on a fixed price menu the value for money was not present Www.cbdbybetterdays.co.uk

Won’t be bothering to book here again. I booked for a party of 4, in the first available evening slot of 6pm. Turned up on time, only to be told they were busy sorting the table out. After several other excuses and a queue of other people waiting, we left at 6:25pm, with no table offered at that point in time. I went to the bar to inform one of the staff that we were leaving. She didn’t seem in the slightest bit bothered. Woeful customer service. Plenty of other great restaurants right next door, so they won’t get our custom again.

A nice restaurant reasonably priced with nice staff

My wife and I visited Newcastle, the venue is ok’ish which could do with an update. We were seated to our table, the couple behind us were offered water, we weren’t, I think it was because they talked posher! At the end of the meal at 9.30pm we asked for the sweat menu and was advised the chef had gone home. I brought my unhappyness to the attention of the manager who said “what do you want me to do” Food ok, service ok, but management appalling ! I’ll never return!

So happy chose this restaurant for my hubby's birthday. Food was amazing and staff were very attentive. Will definitely go back. Thanks for a special night.

Got to say this was another good show by the King Neptune team. My mam kindly treated me to luncheon. Friendly welcome. Good service. Decent chicken and sweetcorn soups for starters and I went for lemon chicken with f/rice and mam went for a chicken and cashew stir fry, with rice which had been boiled. Coffees to end. Mam was thrilled with her main. Great! And I was quietly ecstatic with mine. The bill was a delight. Very happy to leave a decent tip. We’ll be back again.

I hadn't eaten there for 30 years, but it was still as good as it used to be. We had the set lunch, which was very nice and reasonably priced. The decor is a little dated, but the food and friendly service more than make up for it.

Called here for lunch having travelled from Belfast to Newcastle, great lunch menu, very pleasant staff and the food was fantastic. Starter of peking ribs with complimentary spring rolls, and the best chicken satay ever for main course. Packed for a Monday lunchtime and great experience.

Party of 9 for a birthday meal which was ruined! Absolutely appalled at the service. The kitchen got our orders wrong, the waiter blamed our party saying that WE had ordered the wrong food. He then became extremely rude throwing cutlery about, slamming plates down, knocking beer bottles over and shouting at us. I asked to see the manager (waste of time) she totally dismissed the behaviour of the waiter. We ended up leaving without eating. Also the toilets were disgusting, scruffy and absolutely stinking. I really don't understand how this place has good reviews?

Really disappointed with our visit. We were a large group of 9 for a special occasion. The waiter who was looking after us was shocking, his attitude was absolutely disgusting. Never have I been to a restaurant where the kitchen get the order wrong so the waiter throws food and cutlery at us in frustration like it was our fault, raising his voice and blaming paying guests. Very hostile environment Asked to speak with a manager who was useless, just kept making excuses for the employee, no resolution skills whatsoever.

Service was terrible our waiter was extremely rude he brought the wrong food out when we sent it back he threw it on the table next to us he then came out with the rest of the food slamming it on the table knocking cutlery on the floor we asked to speak to a manager who was just as rude so we ended up leaving after our starters. First time here and was looking for a something before Theatre. Booked on line well in advance and got confirmation back same day table was booked. On entry I was met with very friendly team - restaurant was spotless. Whilst not a fan of the starter and i wish Id chosen something else the main course was excellent, tasty, plentiful and leaving with a sense of must come back to try other items. I can certainly recomend without any hesitation.

Super friendly welcome as a walk in on bank holiday Friday, we stayed locally as were visiting the area. This restaurant has great reviews which are entirely true. We had one of the set menus, and enjoyed every single dish. The food was hot, really...
