I initially found it whilst exploring Roman Road, it was so good I returned and took my wife along! Friendly place and well worth a visit, if you, like me have always wanted to.experience London pie & mash!

I wanted to try an authentic British dish, and a lot of blogs and reviews recommended G. Kelly, so off we went. It took us an hour to get here from Notting Hill (and directions on the tfl app was bonkers - the walk was closer to 15-20mins than 10.). I'm afraid, to my asian palate, the vegan pie and mash was probably one of the "blandest things on the menu". Can't put my finger on what was missing but it tasted somewhat bland. It was slightly improved when paired with the chilli-vinegar mix available at all tables, but only marginally so. Perhaps the beef pie is better? The mash could do with a bit more butter... and the stewed eels were 5/6 bite-sized pieces drowning in more warm parsley liqueur/ gravy. They were ok but had as slight fishy taste so if you're sensitive to that, skip it. It reminded me of some bland, basic congee (without the rice, but the liqueur was thick enough to almost resemble loose porridge), sans soy sauce. Good value for money being inexpensive (apart from the eels), but I can't say I would want to go again. Note: If you're used to walking around the high streets of central London, this area feels more real/gritty in a sense.... I did not feel unsafe walking around the area, but it's not the kind of place I would necessarily want to be in unaccompanied at night as a non-local person, either.

A few years ago, there used to be two branches of G Kellys I believe, one at Bethnal green and one on Roman Road. Finally paid G Kelly a visit because I was dining at Randolfi's next door. Since I was rather full, I only had the jellied eels and some liquor. Luckily, I came across their pie mash again in Stevenage because The Cornish Pantry serves them there and they even give you a spoon as well as a knife and fork. The pie is what you would expect, a chewy pie pastry and then inside you have this rich dark coarsely minced beef. It was quite salty and so was the liquor. The liquor was really nice as you could taste the eel in it too. Overall, I am so glad I tried it.

Visited G Kelly’s as I was in the East End on a pub and sightseeing day down from Nottingham. I’m not going to claim to be an expert in pie and mash as I grew up well outside the sound of the Bow Bells! The shop is on the Roman Road and near West Ham’s ground. It has a traditional front and is immaculate. The inside is tiled with chrome and pictures of the original owners and photos from the past. It is in immaculate condition and is very clean. We were warmly greeted on our first ever visit and sat down on the clean marble table. The shop does the usual pies and eels and also does a vegan mince pie. We ordered two vegan pies, mash, liquor and a cup of tea. The food was served quickly. It was piping hot and lovely. The pies have a great pastry, the mash is smooth and the liquor has a great consistency. At £10 for two meals with a drink, it’s very good value. Many of the other customers were clearly regulars on first name terms with the staff. There was decent ‘banter’ and laughs between customers who knew each other. The tea is served on a platter and is Yorkshire. Very good. You can see in to the kitchen which is clean, the toilet was immaculate. This is a proper, traditional east end pie and mash shop with tasty warm comforting food in a clean, friendly environment. I wouldn’t hesitate to come back. Thanks!

I've been coming to Kellys for about 20 years, but since the refurbishment the pies have changed. They used to be thick meat almost congealed like, but with a real meaty taste. Now its mince meat, with a real lack of flavour, I put lots of salt and vinegar to add taste, but the meatiness of the pie is just not there anymore. Such a shame as I used to love this place, but think I'll try Manzes next time, see if they still have the same pies.

Since G Kellys re opened after the refurbishment there is something about the pies that are a bit bland, where as they never used to be...Im not sure if they changed recipie or meat. I have to add a lot of salt and vinegar to bring the flavour out now 🤔 Anyway I would still recommend here, staff are nice, very clean, they take cards and it will fill you up 😋😋

We had spied G Kelly's and decided to go for lunch but as it was only about 11am at the time we carried on in the market until we were hungry. When we got back to the restaurant the queue was already round the corner! We joined the queue and it moves really quickly as the service is run so efficiently (for takeaway and eating in) that you're really not kept waiting long so don't let the queue put you off.We ate in - the seating is on long tables and benches and it's nice to chat to the other people in there - we shared with a local couple to begin with and then a group of Italian tourists replaced them!We had traditional pie (minced beef) and mash with liquor (parsley sauce) but you can also have vegetarian or a chicken, leek and ham pie. Pie and mash with liquor is £3.50 and then we couldn't resist the homemade crumbles (one apple, one rhubarb) with custard for dessert, they were £3.00 each. The turnover of food is amazing - the whole time we were there we saw trays of fresh pies coming out and bucket loads of fresh mash. The food was all delicious, the service really friendly and so efficient and the value excellent - can't wait to go back!

I don't want to write this review with you having any clue as to whether I'll like it or not before the end but this is the best place ever. Just anywhere.I've been coming to Kelly's in Roman Road since I was tiny when my Nan used to bring me. There is nowhere like it in the world and very few that have remained so unspoilt over all those years. It's difficult to explain to anyone that isn't from the area and, to an extent, you just have to trust me when I say that it works. The deal is you get a pie (or two - two's better!) which is a really good beef mince pie with brilliant pastry, mash (or double mash - double mash is better!) which is proper mash freshly made, liquor (I don't know if you can get double liquor - I've never asked - but I don't see how that'd fit on the plate!) which is a sort of parsley sauce which doesn't taste like other parsley sauces and you then put salt and vinegar on it. To me, it needs to be washed down with an orange squash that you get in a plastic sealed cup (I've had it that way for almost 40 years and you ain't changing me now!).It is simply the best thing you're ever going to eat.I see from the menu that they now do things like chicken pie and even a vegetarian pie. Now, I don't really approve of that kind of modern malarky but I suppose if it keeps the vegetarians and the chicketarians happy, then so be it. They also do desserts - which I'm sure are good but (1) how could you fit in a dessert after double pie and double mash and (2) they didn't do it in my day so I can't! Sorry! But I've been increasingly thinking that I need to try the crumble and custard... maybe next time! The other traditional food that they do is jellied eels - and actually Kelly's started out as a jellied eel place. Until recently, I'd not tried eel - jellied or otherwise - and the bottom line is that, while I would probably have them here, the problem for me is that I couldn't not have the pie and mash - so I can't!There are other places that do pie and mash. So I'm told... actually I went in one in Romford once. It was alright, I suppose, but it wasn't proper pie and mash and it wasn't from Kelly's in Roman Road.Anyway, in addition to having the best food, they also have the nicest people working there - consistently over the past almost 40 years. Sometimes you see the same faces, sometimes new and the thing they have in common is a smile (even when it's busy and hot) and, if you get a chance to chat, an acknowledgement that they're working somewhere really quite special - somewhere that means a lot more to people than 'just' a plate of pie and mash or eels.My round trip to Kelly's used to be 430 miles. It's now over 1500 miles but I wouldn't begrudge a minute of it! I can't remember a single trip to London that I've made that hasn't had a trip to Kelly's shoehorned into the schedule somehow. And I can't imagine that I will ever not go there. I hope it never changes.PS One last thing - FORK AND SPOON! Don't pick up a knife. You eat pie and mash with a fork and a spoon. I've no idea why but you do. Use a knife and you'll look like a tourist. So don't! Fork and spoon!

Eating Kelly's pie and mash has been a family tradition for decades and the one that's stood the test of time for my family and I is this one at the top end of Roman road market. The 'second one' closed down long ago and Kelly's in Broadway market fell off our radar a few years ago. I remember coming here as a kid on a Saturday early afternoon, when Roman road had a thriving market and the queue for the pie and mash shop was always out the door. Now it's not so busy, but still does good business. I've since become a vegetarian and the pie and mash shop has kept up with the times by doing the traditional pies using vegan mince and they've even stopped using the eel stock in the liquor. The ladies behind the counter are always friendly and efficient and don't mind bringing your tea over to your table to save you waiting at the counter. In recent years they've introduced fruit pies, with the traditional pastry and fruit crumbles too. They also do chicken pies and gravy for those too scared to go for the liquor! And of course they still do the stewed and jellied eels. It's a shame that so many pie and mash shops have closed down over the years but fortunately Kelly's in Roman road is still going strong and I intend to support them by going every regular. Long live pie and mash!
