Kampai Sushi Bar in Haringey

We went for dinner on a Thursday night. We called to ask if we could go at 21:30. They said ok but flagged last orders were at 21:45 and they close at 22:00 (not sure how they could expect anyone ordering and eating in 15 minutes unless they have a bowl of lukewarm soup). We had ordered by 21:35 and left at 22:09. The speediest £100 they have ever seen. They made it clear from the start they didn’t want us there, obviously concerned about risking of closing a few minutes later than usual, despite accepting our reservation. The service was short and rude, but the cherry on the cake came when I asked to use the toilet and their answer was: sorry, no, we have just cleaned it! Never again.

Non e’ semplice trovare a Londra un sushi cosi’ di alta qualita’ ad un prezzo non esorbitante…. I prezzi londinesi sono assai cari, abbiamo spesso 105 pound in tre… un’affarone… certo non ci siamo ingozzati ma saziati.. veramente veramente ok.

We have ordered food direct from Kampai several times. Absolutely exceptionally fresh and excellent food. Best Japanese food we have tasted - and really good value with fantastic portions (really nice touch that the bowls for delivery are now sustainable!)

The food is barely recognisable as Japanese. All sashimi were borderline edible. How do you even mess up salmon while in U.K.? It’s the easiest fish here. Sushi rice is more than just cooking Japanese rice. It is offensive to even claim it was sushi rice. Stay away.

The vast majority of Japanese restaurants in London these days are not run by Japanese nationals and often this results in some pretty inauthentic food. Kampai is Thai-owned but the roots of the restaurant extend way back to one of the first three Japanese restaurants established in the capital in the 1980s and consequently the cuisine is pretty genuine. The premises are small and located on the busy Archway Road but inside is pleasant with a handful of tables in front of a raised podium where sushi is prepared. At lunchtime we were the only diners but several takeaway are delivery orders were collected during our meal. The service was fine and our bottle of sauvignon blank pretty good for the price. What this restaurant is clearly good at preparing are fish and meat dishes. My bento box contained some decent salmon and tuna sashimi slices, alongside teriyaki salmon fillets and large pieces of quite possibly the best chicken teriyaki I've ever tasted. The box contained no vegetables and very little salad, making it overly protein heavy. The main problem though was the rice: overcooked and almost completely devoid of flavour. I can only hope that they use better quality rice for their sushi. But I don't want to be overly critical: family-run local restaurants like this need support and overall the quality of food they produce justifies local patronage.

Excellent food and service. Really enjoyed a takeaway from this place. It did take 50 minutes to arrive but was certainly worth it. Would thoroughly recommend it!

We came here by mistake, I thought I’d booked somewhere else. But what a wonderful mistake! The food was great and really good value too. We liked everything but the aubergine and kimchi was super nice and so was the Japanese Gin! We’ll be back!

Ordered a delivery from here and honestly was some of the freshest sushi I have eaten, especially for a delivery! We had an array of dishes including salmon sashimi and various rolls. They are very generous with ginger and wasabi which is a plus too! It was all delicious and would definitely order again! thanks guys for making lockdown a little more bearable :)

We always order our sushi takeaways from here and it's delicious. Deliveries are always really prompt and the people delivering are always so lovely! Plenty of food in their bento boxes, done bowls and poke bowls. Sushi is really fresh and good quality. Thanks for the great food and service :)

A lovely restaurant on Archway Road. The food is fantastic, the staff so friendly and the sushi is absolutely amazing, really recommend. The Tempura rolls are really tasty and very reasonable.

Our first time visiting the restaurant. The gyoza and agadashi tofu was good. The tempura roll was overcooked and tasteless. When we ordered sake, we were given the incorrect one. We mentioned this when we asked for the bill and she lied about the type of sake. She didn't apologise or charge us for the sake we were given.

This is the real deal! Authentic, beautifully presented and delicious food in this restaurant serving all the sushi you could wish for plus a selection of hot Japanese dishes too. Book ahead if you can because it’s very small.

Simply amazing food. We had nine dishes all very good. Best dishes were miso aubergine, veggie gyoza, dragon roll. It’s a small place with just 18 covers including two at the bar. Food takes a while so make sure you’re there for a leisurely meal....

We picked a few Bento Boxes for dinner. Lovely staff. Delicious food - we had teriyaki chicken and salmon. Gyozas were fantastic too. Best of all - it was cheap!

Great place - top quality sushi and all other dishes too. Even sides like the tender stem broccoli with sesame goma is delicious. Donburis and goyzas also recommended. It’s BYOB too which brings the price down. Great service - lovely people. Highly recommended

Loved the food from this newly open family run sushi bar in Highgate! Especially the sushi rolls they were just so beautiful and tasty. This will be my regular restaurant from now on.
