John Dory's in Castlereagh

The problem is ,with nearly all fast food places,underpriced staff.lack of manners also.but if there not taught this ,its not there fault I stay away from this place,yet another lurking sarky manager in the background

Chips are disgusting, undercooked nearly raw! Thought I'd get lucky third time but nope still rotten

Ordered a share chip and it is no bigger than a normal chip and even at that it's a poor portion size. John Dorys has forgotten its roots I remember when the Ballygowan shop started and had many friends work in it over the years but they are all about the money now and Don't really offer value for money like the used to . Yes the price off living etc has jumped over the years but there is places out that can still offer value for money compared to this place.

Yeah..solid fish and chips. My go to in the area. No complaints.

Could improve on quality of chips

I got a battered cod here this evening and it was inedible. I worry that it may even be slightly off as it tasted extremely fishy in places. For £6.80, fish alone it is an absolute disgrace. I’ll not be back and I’m going to warn others as well. Avoid

Bought my first burger since covid, thought I'd treat myself to a Hawaiian burger, cost over £5 , never again will I go to John Dory, I work next door in a Spar. I think they thought I was soft. Never again.

Ballygowan Road shop is regular stop for fish and a pastie. Last time, I changed my pastie order for scampi, wrong move. It was awful, batter was much too thick and scampi overcooked. I think I'll look for an alternative chippy in the future.

Really surprised to see the negative reviews on here. Food is always lovely. Yes, things are a little pricey but so is everything now. Really good selection and a great gluten free menu.

Dip not included as per usual, actually 3rd time, now have to check the order as never correct. Something always missing, staff are young and totally not interested, food generally looks undercooked, and it's overpriced.

I used to come here regularly for fish and but called in on Saturday and was really disappointed. The fish was very thin - not even an inch thick. The chips were ok portion size not too bad. But overall disappointing I will not go back.

Fish and ships was nice but wasn't crispy! Breaded part was very soggy.

Spent £35 on takeaway for 3 people. Get it all the way home and half the order is wrong or missing. I rang up about it and they said "we aren't allowed to send out missing items" so I had to go back up and get it. Two trips in the car, and our £35 group dinner turned into me going back to the shop and then having to eat on my own later. Was offered a tin of coke as compensation but didn't accept it. First and last time I will be there. The food, when I did get it home was incredibly unremarkable. My girlfriend makes nicer burger and chips and costs 1/3 of this disaster of a shop. Will. Not. Be. Back.

Called into this evening ordered baugar meal wasn't worth the money over £10 potions sizes of chips not worth it, the baugar was disgusting I really think a local chip could do better 👎👎

"Large" portion of chips is £3.99 and it is basically a scoop of chips. Far too dear for the portion size

This is our local chippy. Fish chips pasties chicken burgers are all delicious. Food cooked as per order. Always great and never greasy.

We called into John Dory’s, which is on The BallyGowan Road in Belfast, to get a takeaway for our dinner. We pre-ordered our takeaway by phone & we told them that we would pay by Credit Card. The staff are very friendly & helpful & told us how much money the takeaway was. There are several other takeaway services that John Dory’s own here in Belfast. If you need anymore information, you can Google them & it will give you a list of locations were John Dory’s are. Also, make sure you phone them, when placing your order for collection. Ordered on the app where you have to add any customisations in a notes box rather than customising the item ordered. Requested the burger I ordered to be completely plain. Picked up my food, got home and the burger had all sorts of dressing and sauce on it. Went back to be told their records don't have any such note about the burger being plain. Then told if you want to order something else talk to the staff and the guy I was dealing with went into the back and didn't come out again. I know what I put in the app. Maybe a glitch in the app or something but seriously, for the sake of the price of what a burger would cost them they wouldn't do anything to help me?? Have had issues with our order before. Won't be back. Terrible customer service.

Nice food however part of order was missing. Only realised when I got home and not worth hassle going back. This has happened on another previous occasion. Make sure you have your complete order before leaving the shop.

Not all John dory’s are equal! I’ve had 2 fantastic dinners from this 1 on ballygowan rd, don’t think I’ll be back to Ballyhack, only downside with John dorys is bit on the pricy side, portions aren’t great either which is why I can’t give it the full 5 ⭐️

Normally fine when order from here but when you order 2 large chips at £3.99 each and only half a scoop of cold chips come, not exactly happy. Then when you call to complain, you are told well that's our portion sizes now so nothing we can do. And arrived 20 mins after the slot time. Awful customer service from people who obviously just wanted to get home quickly tonight

Very good take away for fish and chips with mushy peas. I really enjoyed my helping. Generous amount and very good value for money. Good parking and not long to wait. Food well presented in nice box and bag and well cooked to a good temperature. Would definitely recommend for a fast food outlet.

This was my first visit to John Dory's on the Holywood Road, adjacent to the BP garage. I was in the service station and returning to my car caught the delicious smell of chips and vinegar. Deciding to get a chip to eat with my dinner I went in to John Dory's chippy. I ordered a chip and was a bit shocked to be charged £ 3.99 for a simple chip however I suppose prices have increased due to covid/ Brexit/ minimum wage increase. I was given a ticket with a number on it and waited for this number to be called. When it was my turn and I went over to the counter, I set the ticket on the counter to show that it was the correct order. The serving bloke quite ignorantly said " put your rubbish in the bin" I replied "It's not rubbish, it's the ticket you gave me with my order number on it" He then said again" well, put it in the bin" I took my order and said " Thank you, I won't be back" When I got home I found that the " Award winning chips" were pale and tasteless and really could have done with more time in the fryer. John Dory's can spend a fortune on advertising and point of sale screens but when you employ ignorant staff with no customer service ability , you are not going to get return customers. There's are dozens of chippies in this area. I won't visit a John Dory's, anywhere, ever.

Best fish close to my temporary whereabouts . Untill I found this place I nevere tried breaded fish before even though battered fish is the best , I enjoyed both types. Excellent fish and recomend and also recommend if you order any plain chips ask for salt and vinegar if you want on them as mine didn't had any but luckily I had some dips with them

Great food, including chips. This is a busy chippy (quite rightly so) and consequently you can wait half an hour for your order (but it is worth it). If you can plan in advance, I recommend phoning in your order or use their app and arrive to pick it up at the forecast time. There are discount benefits to using the app.

Good quality but expect a long wait even if preordered

I dont often do chip shops but fancied it for a change. Won't be back in a hurry. £4.99 for gravy chip. Think they must have run out of chips when they made my order as there were hardly any in it! Also got a couple of battered sausages. The batter was like cardboard. VERY expensive meal and not very nice.

Got fish & chips with potion of onion rings & batter on both items was soggy not a Great meal at all won't be back & staff had no gloves & masks were pulled down while they spoke 2 each other while serving food & young girl couldn't give me the right change back 😡

Best chippy around. Although the prices are higher than average, the food quality is worth the extra. Highly recommend.

Fish a bit greasy, otherwise very good

Ordered a fish in breadcrumbs supper and when my husband came home, it was a battered fish! and chips were also cold. Very disappointed as I'd been talking a few weeks about trying this out.Wont be back!

Never again!! Manager was so ignorant! We waited 2.5 hours for a delivery and when it finally came half was missing. Manager said she couldn't do anything or offer us any money back unless we returned the food. I said my starving kids were eating it so I could hardly return, her reply was "the kids are hardly starving if they are eating it". We had to all switch our meals so the kids could eat from the first delivery. No apology what so ever, Manager just blamed the delivery lady and that was it. £35 and never again!! Worst service I have ever received!!

Best gluten free takeaway in Belfast that's actually safe to eat for celiacs

Just waited an hour and 30 mins for a delivery food arrived cold and to top it off they forgot my drink but didnt forget to charge me for it !

Have never had a bad meal highly recommend.

Burger over cooked chips where frozen at some stage no taste vinegar watered down and they most have been afraid to put salt on the chip all on all very bland.

I can't get enough of their chicken fillet burger. Handy gluten free fish as well for the wife. Nice .

Poor service ordered at 7:34pm and got my order at 20 past 8. Ordered two taco chips and 20minutes later was being served a chip with taco sauce. When questioned where the mince was the girl was defensive. Saying that wasn't what was ordered. Then said I would have to pay for both orders.. When I explained this wasn't my fault she then charged me for the mince seperately. Then had to wait a further 20minutes on the correct order. No apology it seemed I was an inconvenience not a customer. Won't be back.

Nice but forgot some of my order will be checking from now on.

OK chips could be a bit more crispy

Great chips, went back a second time, 3.20 for a ‘large’ chip that was smaller than most of the small chips you could get elsewhere. Can’t abide that kind of stinginess and deffo won’t be back again.

Placed order via their app and headed over to collect. Place was extremely busy and we had to wait over our collection time. When we arrived home part of the order was missing. Spoke to Catherine (manager) and she couldn't have been more apologetic. As we couldn't head back to collect she arranged priority delivery with fresh meal and refunded the meal. This definitely wouldn't put us off ordering from them again. Food was lovely!

Very disappointing portions size. Ordered a regular chip and two sauages through there app. When it arrived portion was barely enough to feed a child. For a regular chip at £3.30 this is a disgrace!!!

I have made an order through their app, thinking it's better to get the food when I get there in the pandemic. Food should be ready by 19:50 (40 minutes from placing an order). I have received the food with 30 minutes delay (standing in the cold)! Everybody who ordered their food on place got it before me, so what's the point of having an app? Employees weren't wearing gloves, and some wore masks under the nose. Long story short food was cold. Scampi should be served with salad but was served with few cold chips instead. Scampi dry and some weren't even buttered. Time to say goodbye! PS picture shows the full portion of "scampi with salad".

So very disappointed. Usually get great service at Lisburn John Dorys. First time ordering online and last. This review is of John Dorys Ballygowan Road, Belfast. Order placed before 7pm. Next available slot 7.40pm. Arrived on time. Stood for 10 minutes at various locations inside hoping someone would see me. Watched my meal being prepared and placed on a shelf. Eventually someone appeared at the till and order was handed over. First time ordering the combo meal. It wasn't a bit nice. My 2 sauces were missing and the salted chilli chicken was dried up like an old shoe. The chips were disappointing and not crispy. Gluten free meals requested, so online order followed up with a phone call and again rang when sat down to eat meal and discovered the sauces missing.

DO NOT leave here without checking that your order is correct! 3 times now the orders been wrong so I was effectively overcharged £4.60! I rang and was spoken to like I had special needs! Was begrudgingly offered a free burger but to be honest I won't be back here again.

Good service, and nice food. However, we called to make a collection and they requested to pay ON the phone, by giving our details OVER THE PHONE. Anybody reading this, please NEVER do this! This is bad practice, not saying they will but people could "leak" your details and you're trusting the person on the phone not to do that. The bank wouldn't ask for your bank details over the phone, so why is John Dorys???

This chippy ( ballygowan road) is an absolute disgrace, we waited for 20 mins ( which we had to remind the guy behind the counter we were waiting) for a "portion" of chips, which we paid over £3, when we got home and opened our chips to share there was not even enough for a child 😡, we are regular customers and will not be going back.

Staff are terrible, waited 25 mins for my order what I telephone in and when I asked where was my order they laughed as it's been sitting for 15mins and they forgot to call me JOKE of a place, and say gluten free they need to review this cant use the same equipment and utensil for gluten and gluten free products

Terrible experience. Only ordered the Lord onion rings and cod. The batter was soft heavy and soggy in the onions and fish. I don't think the batter was cooked. Just coloured awful experience waste of Money .

Order 2 burgers on the 23/08/19 around 18:40-19 Both burgers burnt,dry and chewy First IV had out of this one normally go to ballyhack store. Haven't had a chippy in months and got the craving for one and I get this... Bit disappointed

Gluten free options available, but prehaps best to call and place your order and collect later, as there can sometimes be a delay on the gluten free orders as they use the same pan to start cooking their chips. The food is really delicious though so worth the wait.

Hi. Last Wednesdaynight 31.07.19 I came into Ballygowen Road John Dorys to order Myself a fish Supper and a childs meal. The guy who served me was very polite (I think his name was JZ?). At that my son who has autism finds it very difficult to talk to people but while this young man was asking what my child drink was my son wanted a can of fanta lemon. I didn't realise there was a extra charge for a can on kids meal (my mistake) I only had enough without fanta lemon. My son look so disappointed but this young fellow said to my son .. dont you worry I'll give it to you but next time you come in you can brush our floor (he laughed and joked) my son found it really funny and he was so so happy to have a can of fanta. Something so small made my son so happy I'm so happy with the service and when he was serving our order he asked did we want any salt and vinegar my son said yes only a wee bit and the young fellow give it to my son so he could do it himself. I have never been so happy to leave a food place. Very well done to this staff member and I hope this gets back to him. However I am sure his name began with j z as I heard the other staff member call his name. Thank you so much I will be back. :-)

Great spot in Belfast for fish and chips. Also they do gluten free batter, so fish, onion rings and everything else battered is available gluten free. This is now my go to chippie in Belfast.

Just called in, 11 am. Asked for a hotdog. Young fellow replied "no baps" 2 sausages then. 1 was overcooked and the other was cremated. I won't be back.

I have came here a number of times. It's safe to say that I've been disappointed every time. Lack of care for the food being served. Orders consistently wrong despite clear instruction. The venue requires a competent manager to monitor staff and food prep as the one currently employed had zero understanding of good quality service. The only way this venue could receive multiple food service and quality awards would be if the owners bribed the awards committee. ***Edit: After what I can only describe as a positive and understanding response from the shop owners I feel the chip shop deserves a better review. I will definitely go back and give them another chance.

Terrible customer service, waited without a word, guy standing chatting completely ignored me had to ask to place order then after another wait another employee emerged from the back and begrudgingly took my order. This was followed by yet another lengthy wait then the guy cooking had my food in a bag but didn't call me, I walked over to him and he just held the bag out UNBELIEVABLE. After all that the food was under cooked and tasteless but that tends to happen when the staff put zero effort into the food. AVOID

It's fine. Nothing more nothing less. It does a fair lunch trade due to lack of options in the area but it wouldn't be anywhere you would want to go at tea time as the options anywhere else is better

Staff too busy talking to a each other to serve customers. Stood for quite some time this evening, didn't get served. Final straw was when staff started serving customers who had arrived long after me. Possibly excusable if shop was busy but it wasn't. Rang to complain and was told I hadn't been standing at the till, which I had. I'll not be back.

Make sure you check your meal before you leave as they gave me chicken instead of cod and didnt give us our drinks either. They were kind enough to fix the situation but it was obviously inconvenient as it took extra time
