Jintana Thai Restaurant, Ambleside in South Lakeland

I first ate at Jintana Thai in 2022 and I haven’t stopped thinking about the pudding since! We visited Ambleside and I knew I had to book here again as I enjoyed it the first time so much. The restaurant itself is very well presented, comfy booth seats and beautifully decorated. The staff were super lovely and funny and really make eating here a wonderful experience! The food is amazing! We got crackers to appetise which came with a lovely sweet chilli dip and then we got the vegetable spring rolls (the plum sauce is unreal!) and chicken satay to start which we shared, then we both got the Thai green curry with coconut rice and yellow noodles, which was great as we were also able to share our sides. For dessert my boyfriend got the banana spring rolls and I got my long awaited Saku which did not disappoint! You must try the Saku if you visit! I would 100% recommend this restaurant if you’re staying or passing through Ambleside! They also have locations in Kendal and Bowness too!

Visited here on 1st March with my boyfriend. We sat upstairs and had a very relaxed meal with excellent service from Nick and another lady (sorry we didn’t catch her name). We had fishcakes and spring rolls to start, then a yellow curry and Thai whiskey beef on a sizzling platter with coconut rice and noodles for our mains. All the food was delicious and the yellow curry was the best we’ve ever had! Bonus that it was dog friendly as we were staying in the Lakes for the weekend with our little frenchie so she got to enjoy it also. My boyfriend has a nut allergy and they were very accommodating with this and put us at ease. It also didn’t limit his choices on the menu like it does in some other places. We will definitely return when we’re back in the area and I’d recommend to anyone!

A warm welcome from all staff. Our order was taken promptly and our waiter had a lot of knowledge regarding the menu. The food (both starter and main course) was well presented, tasty and well priced. Worth a visit recommend booking in advance.

Lovely little restaurant, the waiter that served us was excellent, got us a table on a busy Saturday night upstairs, a really warm, polite, genuine man. Unfortunate I didn’t catch his name but top service. Food was lovely too.

Atmosphere was lovely. As for the food, if you had served me this meal at home and told me it was a ready meal, I wouldn't bat an eyelid. Left feeling ripped off, hungry, and slightly unwell from the food that was made with no love and likely 3 days previous.

Delicious, colourful and lovely service….just what we needed on a dismal Feb evening. Thank you. Menu consists of all the usual favorites with a few surprises. Food was a delicious mix of exotic flavours … hot and sour, sweet and sticky, all served with lightning speed.

The food itself was okay, the waiter was somewhat sketchy on the details of what was in the food and what or what not was possible. Left me feeling a little uneasy. On the whole, food was alright, prices were low and the place wasn't busy so can't complain too much.

Walked in for a takeaway and the staff were polite, efficient and kind. We had the vegetarian pad Thai and Thai green curry. Both were absolutely delicious! Highly recommend, fairly pricey though.

Delicious food and excellent, creative cocktails and mocktails. Prompt and efficient service. Open all day, so you can grab a late lunch at 3 pm. when many other Ambleside restaurants are closed. We really liked the decor, especially the authentic Thai tuktuk.

**UPDATE** Since the manager has been in touch in response to my post and advised that they would reverse credit card charges, this has yet to be done. I have now emailed them twice and still no response... My second visit to this restaurant, we enjoyed the food and wanted to leave a tip, the staff advised they did not accept cash and to leave a tip via QR code. However, they did not advised that my credit card would incur additional charges, and subsequently received a £3 charge as a “cash advance” and interest for the next two months. This visit has now been marred, and will be apprehensive about returning here as we are regular visitors to Ambleside. I hope this review serves as a warning to future customers.

What a lovely little restaurant. Was a bit anxious as first holiday with our baby and also first time out with her for a meal. But the staff here couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. Then there is the food, which was delicious..we had the sharing platter to start, which we both really enjoyed, some crackers which were lovely and fresh and crispy. We both had pad Thai for main, one beef and one chicken, and both were delicious and good portion sizes. Reasonably priced too. Will definitely be making this a place to go whenever we are back in the Lakes. Thanks to the staff for making us feel so comfortable and relaxed.

Called in last night, streets were insanely busy as lantern parade on, I didn’t make a reservation, restaurant was packed but the lovely waiter, sorry didn’t get your name, may have been polish, was so so lovely, very kind, he said if we didn’t mind waiting 10 minutes he’ll try & get us in. Sure enough 10 minutes later table available, service incredible, food was absolutely amazing (yes I’ve been to Thailand many times so have an idea how it should taste) brilliant atmosphere, I’m sure the waiting staff must have been exhausted as must have all staff in Ambleside but they were brilliant. Ignore the below reviews, go here, it’s lovely 🍷

Arrived for meal at 8.20pm , party of five, sat promptly upstairs, alcohol served almost immediately. Order taken for a meal for five in a relatively quick time. Then came the wait and more waiting. Starters were served at 9.20 pm and main meal served onto our, by then, cold plates at 9.55 pm. Starters were very good, main meal was not. Lots of vegetables and not much meat, dishes included cucumber? Aubergine and chunky tomato with a lot of typical veg, rice used to fill. Very disappointing, leaving 2 hours after our arrival. This cost £171 for five meals and six beers. No apology given.

Very nice food. We will definitely go back. However, the seating arrangements were to suit the staff I think. Eg. a couple arrived and were placed right next to a noisy table of young lads who were drinking, when there was plenty of room to seat them elsewhere. Similarly a family asked to be moved because of this. The early-bird menu is good value.

Horrendous establishment for a start the waiter was so rude. I called in for a take away and the guy said your lucky we are not busy otherwise you would have to order on line. I thought not to worry and ordered a pint whilst waiting. I literally sat down and within 5 minutes the food was ready which I thought was crazy. So on to the food. Thai Fish cakes- bought in and like rubber. Spare ribs- horrendous and literally full of fat and tasted terrible. Prawn green curry- like milk and zero taste. Jasmine rice more like basmati rice no taste. Satay chicken really tasteless. Prawn crackers- tasted like they had been there all day. All I can say is this was my first visit and it will be the last.

Ah it's such a mixed bag this, in the past it's been excellent (been a regular visitor to Ambleside for over ten years) and it still has its moments, I don't like leaving negative reviews but hopefully things can get better as this place could be brilliant! It's a beautifully decorated restaurant with statues, art and even a tuk van in the premises, I'm sure no one will complain about how it looks! It's in a fantastic location central to the town and it's always very busy so booking is advised! But the last 4 times we've been it's been sadly steadily getting worse. The last time we visited, we booked in advance but still had to wait (not a problem) but we were waiting over 25 mins upon sitting down, I actually had to ask the staff if we could have some menus. The starter was out way before the drinks (which they didn't bring one, had to ask again) and mains, when they finally arrived we left half of each as it just seemed very rushed. It's very expensive (the tofu curry and rice was just under £20 and as you can see even there's not a lot, albeit ok tasting) Pricy for Ambleside and neither of us were very impressed tbh, We couldn't wait to leave and it will be our last visit for a good while. The staff are really working hard but you can tell straight away how understaffed the current situation is and how stressful it is for them, but being very rude and blunt doesn't help anything. We definitely weren't the only customers unimpressed with the experience and with Ambleside having no shortage of places to eat, as it is at the moment I'd suggest looking elsewhere while you're visiting the beautiful town.

This was one of the worst restaurants I've been to. The food was tasteless. The jungle curry was a watery disgrace. Avoid this establishment at all costs. The staff were not interested when I enquired about the very poor quality of the curry.

Visited the Ambleside ‘branch’ for early dinner. I had the pork toast for starter. It was tasteless and not a sign of pork anywhere. My wife had sweetcorn frittters, which again were tasteless. The worst was yet to come: the Jungle curry. Absolute garbage. Watery crap to put it mildly. One of the worst dishes I have ever been served. When I spoke to the waiter I was simply told that it was meant to be watery. If my review stops some business going to this awful place then all the better.

We have eaten here frequently and enjoyed the food and that still applies. However, when paying the bill, I stated I would like to add gratuity on the credit card. I was advised that in order for my tip to go direct to the staff, rather than restaurant owner, this would go through as a separate transaction, for which I had to enter my PIN again. I went along with this foolishly. It turns out that payment of only £10 was an international transaction with an account in Belfast which, when I received my credit card bill, had attracted a £3 international transaction charge along with immediate interest from the time it was made. On top of that, it has appeared as a cash withdrawal on my credit card and consequently my credit score has fallen by 10%. Beware if you are asked to tip using a separate transaction. I should have been more vigilant but its an easy trap to fall for.

Came here a few weeks ago for dinner with a group of 6. Managed to book no problem for a Saturday night, but on arrival it was packed so you do need to book! Service was slow to start, but it was busy so is understandable. However once we had our drinks and ordered, the food arrived in very good time. I would highly recommend this place because of the food and atmosphere. We all ordered different things and the restaurant did excellent

Really good service. Fast, efficient. Spot on. Nice atmosphere as well. Food wasn’t that great though. Not bad by any means but just quite plain. Not much flavour to any of the dishes. Maybe it was poor choice on our part but just a bit disappointing. Apart from flavour food was great, just a shame taste is such an important part of food.

Varied menu and ok for gluten free, although most choices were curry based. Very few starters were gluten free. However the food was good and the staff friendly. We booked in advance but they did accept walk ins while we were there. Serve was prompt and food arrived quickly. Good atmosphere.

Lovely decorated restaurant and lovely welcoming staff, However the food was absolutely disgusting and cold, not authentic at all, can honestly say one of the worst meals I’ve ever had, seriously gutted as I spent £80 on a set meal for 4. The lamb massaman had the cheapest pales pieces of chewy lamb, the sauce was like water, no taste to it what so ever. portion size isn’t enough to feed a 2 year old. The restaurant was dead for a Saturday probably explains it’s self I am Proper disappointed looked forward to this all week, ended up ordering a pizza.

We had an excellent meal here last night, possibly one of the best Thai meals we’ve had in a long time. We hadn’t booked but they found us a table after a few moments discussion (it was packed). Ok, they’re short staffed, like many restaurants are, but the staff they did have worked their absolute socks off - especially the waiter who took our order. I’ve worked in hospitality myself and all credit to these guys for keeping the show on the road. We weren’t in a hurry and appreciated the honesty that desserts would take a while as the kitchen were short staffed (we opted for tea and biscuits at our accommodation instead which suited us both just fine after a long day walking). We both very much enjoyed our meal and if we were here for longer we’d definitely be back!

A great restaurant and most importantly it’s DOG FRIENDLY!! We had the green curry and the pad see eu- lovely taste, authentic Thai flavours, good portion sizes. The service was just right too. Will be back next time we are at Ambleside. Note - we have been to Thailand many times , and do appreciate authentic Thai flavours !!

Me and my husband ate here this evening. We hadn’t booked but when we walked in and asked for a table for 2 and when we said that we hadn’t booked the host looked annoyed, even though there was only 1 table in at the time, looked at his seating plan and sat us. When he came to take our order he seemed to have an attitude. I ordered my dish and asked if it could be made mild” and he said with an attitude” so you want the chilli and basil without the chilli”? I said yes, i asked if it was a problem and he just shook his head. I have eaten this dish in many other Thai restaurants and never been made to feel like this was a problem. The food came out quickly and was ok. My husband really enjoyed his meal, mine was ok but was a little disappointed. The basil sauce did not taste of much basil and the basil that was in the dish didn’t taste thai or normal basil. We ate our meal, paid and left as we felt as welcome as a fart in a lift. The host made me feel uncomfortable throughout. The restaurant wasn’t busy, but he turned 2 couples away staying there wasnt room, then allowed another couple who came a little later to sit who hadnt made a reservation. In the time it took us to eat our meal only one other table came in, so don’t why he was making out they were fully booked. We didn’t leave a tip because of the hosts customer service. Will not go back

The duck spring rolls were poor, it should have been a vegetable spring roll as I could count the amount of duck in there. The fried rice was tasteless and the service was ridiculous. One waiter in particular was not friendly at all, otherwise the rest of the staff were helpful.

The food is good but it’s the tiniest portion we’ve ever had. We paid £37 for these food on the picture. 🥹 The waiters and waitress are very nice but the service is really slow. Not bad but won’t recommend it.

We booked a table for 8 of us to celebrate and recover from our earlier exertions swimming the length of Windermere. Initially things looked ok. Only three of us had starters and they arrived in reasonable time and were quite tasty - although the squid in the mixed seafood starter never materialised. We then waited over an hour with no one clearing the table or bringing our main course. When we asked the only waiter on duty upstairs, a young chap clearly inexperienced and overwhelmed, when our food would arrive he said he didn’t know, but as we had ordered it would arrive some time. Finally, 2 hours after first sitting down , when we were the only diners upstairs , our main courses arrived. The seafood special was very disappointing and overpriced. The Thai prawn curry was served to another of us who was told that it was chicken. No apologies were offered either for the delay or the mix up. All agreed that the food was poor, and the service terrible. It may be okay on a quiet evening midweek, but if it looks busy don’t be fooled into thinking it’s worth eating here.

We showed up quite late after a long drive. The staff were very helpful, especially when one of our party found the food chosen to be too spicy. Highly recommended

We walked down after a lovely day in and around Ambleside and Lake Windermere. We left our phones at our cottage to get away from work but they refused to take a takeaway order by pen and paper, and requested the only way to order was to scan the QR code. What a shame that life has come to this in The Lakes and how people forget their roots. The restaurant was very busy and we have used the Bowness restaurant many times in the past. Shame on you Jintana. If I could have given 0 I obviously would.

The rudest restaurant staff we have ever encountered!!! Avoid this place at all costs. They were actually arguing with us in front of the whole packed restaurant when we questioned them on the table choice they had reserved for us.

Very disappointed. None of the usual cultural warmth i expect from a ‘Thai restaurant’. Customer service was woeful from non-Thai front of house staff. We were reminded 3 times of our apparent 1-hour and 15 minute time limit before we must leave, as was most other customers. When we tried to order starters we were again warned to reconsider as we ‘only have 1 hour and 15 minutes’!. An unfriendly and extremely disappointing experience. Food was average but acceptable .

Ordered our takeaway for a birthday treat ordered online their opening hours stating 12pm to 11pm …our order went through and was excepted…so arrived at 4-30pm to the whole place in darkness and doors locked tried to ring them several times no answer ..so waited around at 5pm they opened up ,we told him we had ordered for 4-30 pick up he said that’s impossible we don’t open until 5pm ,he then walked away while in mid conversation to talk to someone else ..he then went to the back brought out our takeaway ….No apology nothing ..we paid £42 added a tip! it was tasteless and not nice at all ..spoilt our birthday treat..I wouldn’t recommend and it far the worst takeaway I’ve ever had …avoid at all cost .

Celebrating my husband's birthday at this restaurant was an absolute culinary delight. The Popia Tod Vegetable Spring Rolls were a delightful start, offering a crispy exterior and a burst of flavors within. Moving on to the mains, the Pad Thai was a fragrant masterpiece, with each ingredient harmonizing to create a satisfying dish. The Khao Pad Rot Fai Railway Fried Rice was a flavorful journey of its own, boasting a medley of tastes that truly stood out. Complementing these dishes was the Khao Suay Jasmine Rice, a simple yet essential companion. However, the star of the meal was the Thai Green Curry. Its creamy, aromatic blend of spices and tender ingredients left an unforgettable impression. Overall, the restaurant's offerings made for an unforgettable birthday celebration, and I look forward to returning for more of their delectable Thai cuisine.

The service was very prompt, very friendly staff. The decorating made you feel you were in Thailand, especially with the tuktuk inside. The toilets could do with upgrading but they function. The food is just like the decor very authentic. The last place we had Thai food that was so good was when we were in Thailand. The flavours are amazing. It is delicious and definitely worth trying. The price is very good for the portion sizes.

Nice little Thai restaurant in the middle of Ambleside. Loved the TukTuk table! Novel idea. Before 6pm they have a meal deal offer for £16.95 which is what I had as I didn't want anything fancy that day. Good food nicely cooked. Fast service.

Located in Ambleside, the competition is great to attract customers. Jintana provides a lovely restaurant experience. Food is well cooked and really tasty with no long delays. Service was really good with attentive waitresses & waiters. Prices are available on their website but seemed reasonable. All in all a nice eating experience.

I had vegetarian dish, the baby corn wasn’t fresh at all, and the horrible thing was the staff wasn’t friendly and not really happy I guess to have the customer.

Food here was the best Thai food I cannot fault it. We had to wait a little while for drinks to come to the table but it was very busy and they had big parties in at the same time as us. Definitely worth coming here for something different.

Firstly an honesty issue. Ordered pork satay as part of a takeaway order, only to find out later that a pawn cracker was included instead, which is obviously much cheaper. Well, it could well be an innocent mistake but considering there were NO customers at the time when I placed the order, I found it hard to convince myself. Secondly, it is extremely expensive given the portion size. The 17.5 quid (yes, you read it right) lamb curry could not even fill a small bowl. Last and the most disappointing is the flavour. Curry was bland, meat (both curry and pork rib) were tough, what else to say....... If you have any other choice (which I did not as it was 3pm in the afternoon on Monday when almost all other eatery were closed), ignore this place.

Everything from the outside is a facade. It has one of the nicest decorations and welcoming service but the food is important. Ordered padthai as it is one of the most known cuisine but it taste like INSTANT NOODLES, lack of spices or seasoning. The mince pork taste like KEEMA kebab. Food is nothing like thai cuisine.

Had a pleasant meal here. They were busy on a Thursday evening but we returned after 30 mins as arranged and our table was ready We had prawn crackers and a veggie platter to start which were nice enough. A red tofu curry and green tofu curry which were both delicious! With some rice to share and a beer each it came to around £50 which I thought was quite reasonable. The service was super friendly though and the chap who served us was very funny! Even though we were the last people in we didn't feel rushed.

Portion is very less for the price we pay. It's day light robbery. Attitude of the staff wasn't helpful. When asked about where to park the car , they told they didn't have any idea. Taste was okay. Best to avoid this restaurant .

First of all, I am surprised at some of the poor reviews people have written about this place...this restaurant is amazing. It has been a while since we last went to Thailand bur this restaurant is by far the closest we've got to feeling like we was back there. The food was so tasty, and so authentic. Plenty amount of food - we left full. Yes this restaurant has high prices but its pretty obvious as to why they charge the prices they do, such as: the high quality of the meals, the beautiful decor, you are in the lake district, this is not an english gastropub (far too many people comparing prices of this restaurant to pub grub, nonsense reviews!). The staff here were so welcoming and friendly, even ensured our toddler was having a nice time. We had the Jintana sharing platter starter, so tasty and a lovely variety. Then we both had a chicken massaman with coconut rice - huge depth in flavour of the curry sauce, simply heaven. Plenty of food for sure. You will not be disappointed if you come to this restaurant, I could not find any faults whatsoever with it.
