I live in S. Wales but travel to the Kings Lynn area to stay with family once or twice a year. I like this pub very much because of it's lovely location, smart interior and a good choice of ale's. However I notice in some reviews people complain about the surliness of the landlord and landlady, well funny thing but I found this to be the case as well, a right pair of misery guts they are, but I do not care about this in the slightest degree as long as they do not have a go at me directly. So we will continue to leave our women in Downham to shop and call in for a few pint's. Oh I'm 74 now so I can get a bit crotchety myself... x

Great food every time. Good service. Puddings are delicious! Its an old english pub with lots of character and the food is always really tasty and homely. I wish there were more places like this. The negative comments about this place are totally unnecessary and insulting! If you have a gripe, do it in person! I like the Landlady, straightforward, no messing and runs a really good team. Tonight’s steak was the best and definitely filled a gap! Thanks again!

Jenyns is a lovely pub - even though it's really out of the way, it's very well patronised. It's worth taking a bit of time out to explore Denver Sluice while you're there. Good, friendly service, meals arrived quite quickly. But a word of warning! The portion sizes are immense. The plate was piled so high, it was almost intimidating, I had been eating for ten minutes before I found the meat, buried under a huge pile of potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and other veg, Can't complain at the value for money, though. Just make sure you're really hungry!

Quite frankly I am astounded that this place has got it's fair share of negative reviews, it's only now after eating here I can see why.... your customer base! Came here for my birthday lunch on friday with my mum, I thought it was such a quaint beautiful little place with the option to sit out alongside the river if you should choose to do so, we sat in doors, it was fish friday... I had the Salmon with Hollandaise sauce and my mum had the Fish and chips, it was absolutely delicious, both had a bread basket included and all for £10.90 each, I daresay there is nowhere else around here that would match your value for money or freshness. Now back to my first point.... whether it was just a bad day or not, we couldnt BELIEVE they way some of shall we say your customers of the older generation? Were speaking and demanding toward the staff, just pure plain pig ignorance, I work in hospitality and if I had customers like those we witnessed that day on the regular talking to me like that I daresay I'd have been sacked years ago! All of the staff here were lovely, helpful and welcoming. We cant wait to return for lunch here again, keep doing what you're doing :) 💕

This is in a beautiful spot on the River Great Ouse at the Denver Sluice Gates. We called in for an evening meal on the way back to our hotel after visiting relatives in the area. We had not booked but were fortunate in that we arrived just before 6.0pm when they were opening for the evening and secured a good table. It became busy soon after we had ordered our food, The main thing about the meals, which tend to be quite traditional pub fare, was the size of the portions. We watched as huge fish with chips and half a chicken were served to other diners. I had chilli con carne and my wife a filled jacket potato which were largely manageable. The food was well cooked and the service was excellent.

Beautiful spot down on the river and if you’re happy for closing time to be 8.30pm and be spoken to in a rude manner by who I assumed to be the landlord then this is the place for you. I certainly won’t be going again which is a shame as it use to be such a vibrant place to go.

Rang ahead as advised for allergy. All sauces have gluten in them I was informed the choices is plain fish or jacket potato or salad. Asked if they could try to make more options as not many and was told if the choices was not to my liking they couldn’t do anything about that. And if they catered for gluten free they would have to cater for vegans etc. Your business, your choice, my custom going else where.

The Jenyns Arms is situated at Denver Sluice and has a very good riverside position. With such a location, and with it's outside terracing and seating, I thought it would be busy - if it were on e.g. the Thames I'm sure it would be busy all day - but the sluice is off the main track a little with little passing trade and there wasn't much activity on the river so that's not the case. My wife and I went there first of all during the afternoon to find it closed; it closes between 3 and 6 pm. We returned as part of a group of about 30 for an evening meal (a midweek roast) and the food was quite acceptable; nothing to go overboard about but, for the price, was ok and it was all served hot. Where it stood out for me was in it's choice of desserts: there was quite a few I could have chosen which is quite unusual as I'm a bit of a traditionalist where desserts are concerned. There was bread and butter pudding, treacle tart, apple pie, jelly, and others all on display. I chose the bread and butter pudding and it was good. I heard no complaints from anyone else either. Overall I'd rate it somewhere better than an average 3 but below a very good 4.

Visited this pub on Saturday with our small well behaved dog which we have done before and sat in the conservatory but on arrival the conservatory was closed off and no heating, when enquiring about the dog we got a very rude welcome and was forced to sit in the back corner of the pub like naughty school children, it was freezing in this area. We decided to leave after one drink and not order food as originally planned due to the rudeness of the landlady (we believe she was), there is no need to speak and disagree with people and customers like she did. Very much put us off visiting the pub. We were very disappointed, due to the location and boaters the pub needs to become much more dog friendly to well behaved dogs.

All was very hot and fresh.A lovely setting too.

There was an issue with one of the brollys on a table outside which a young lady attempted to fix by standing on the table under the watchful eye of a lady in her mid thirties which all was fine by me except the table wasn't disinfected or washed afterwards! Sunny Sunday afternoon - took my mum for something to eat and a drink by the river in the sun. We both chose the 4 cheese quiche with chips and coleslaw from the specials board. Mum doesn't like coleslaw so ordered without but when the meal arrived, she asked one of the waitresses if she could have a tomato instead. No problem, they cut up the biggest tomato I think we have seen and brought this out to her with a smile. The coleslaw tasted homemade and the quiche was definitely homemade and so delicious. While we were waiting, the bar staff chatted to mum as she was looking around at all the old items they have hanging up around the bar area. The food arrived quite quickly and disappeared quite quickly too! We then took our drinks and spent another half hour or so sitting by the river watching the fish swim around, the swans with their cygnets and the boats passing by. Very relaxing and peaceful. The staff were all very friendly and couldn't do enough to please, highly recommended.

The place was empty, food was limited with only one portion of several dishes. Enquiring about dietary requirements we were misled to find a member of our party ended up with a meal they couldn't eat! No help to solve this issue only told a different meal would have had to paid for on top. Original meal taken away. No offer of desserts at end of meal and long time taken to clear table. We will not be returning or recommending this establishment. An empty restaurant on the Thursday before Christmas should have given us a clue. You should not have to cook a meal after going out to eat. Food we did have was expensive for what it was.

I feel I have dodged a bullet, if phone manners are in line with their entire customer service I have no doubt my afternoon would of been ruined.

We popped in for lunch today, we both ordered from the specials board. I chose the steak and ale pie and my partner had the rump steak. The portions were huge! Never a bad thing. The pastry on my pie was like concrete, I couldn't get a knife in it. The contents of the pie and the rest was good, but disappointed. The service in the whole was good. The waitress didn't say much about the pie and no discount was offered. The setting is so nice, the place just needs a bit of an over haul and menus need shaking up a bit. It has so much potential, like the pub it used to be years ago

Arrived and ordered door (typical pub grub) and was told there was a 45 min wait. This was fine as it was a nice evening and we sat outside overlooking the river. The lad who took our order was polite and friendly, however another member of staff told the family behind me very bluntly that no changes could be made to the menu when she requested pineapple rather than egg with her meal. Food arrived just under the 45 min wait time, which was good as our small son was getting hungry. Couldn't even placate him with his iPad as the free WiFi was awful.Food Arrived, it was hot, lots of it, basic pub grub and nothing outstanding but OK.Busy pub, great location. Would go back for drinks by the river, but not for food.

Visited Jenyns Arms with our friends when in the area for a well earned break. The setting for this hostelry is beautiful, right on the river bank. The location means they can get very busy but we arrived just before the rush, at one time the wait for food was an hour, which just goes to show how popular the place is. But, it isn't just the location that makes the Jenyns popular, the food the produce is excellent, now I'm a big chap and love my food but I couldn't finish my meal, the portions were large! I had the steak and ale pie, one of us had the chicken burger and the other two had the plaice. No of us could fault the food or the service we had here and would have no qualms about recommending this pub at all!

What a great place to eat! Barges and boats are moored close by and as the sun set we sat in the conservatory taking in the view and enjoying the ambience. Then the food arrived, oh my, I wish we lived closer! My Husband enjoyed a Rib Eye Steak and I had a Seafood Lasagne which was to die for and helpings generous. Go on, treat yourselves at Jenyns.

Went to lunch recently on a cold Monday. The pub was very welcoming with a roaring log fire.It was noticeable that the restaurant and bar area were well looked after and very clean. The typical pub food was plentiful and well presented,in fact the portion sizes were perhaps just too large. We didn't have desserts as we were all full. All in all a good first time visit, and we would certainly return.

Myself and the family always look forward to having a meal here. In good weather this is the perfect place to sit outside overlooking the river or in the conservatory where the view is also amazing. There is always plenty of options available and the specials menu that they have available on a separate board are always divine! The food is always out on good time and it is always big portions and the meals are very reasonably priced! Choices of desserts are to die for and can be hand selected from there desserts cabinet!I always look forward to eating and this restaurant and cannot recommend it enough!

We sat in the window seats overlooking the river with lovely views, but the chairs were old and saggy! We ordered crab lasagne and prawns from the Friday fishy menu but the dish was very hot, straight from the microwave it seemed, and rather bland. I've had scampi and chips here in the past and enjoyed it, but this meal was very average.Shame, as the setting is nice and the staff pleasant.

We arrived for lunch without booking but found tables free. Order was taken fairly quickly and the food came after a short wait of about 15 mins. Excellent meal. Frank has a stilton ploughman's with crusty baguette and plenty of accompaniments. Huge amount of cheese. I had the fish and chips which were well cooked and delicious. Coffee was great too. We chose to sit inside as the weather seemed cold. The Denver sluice complex is well worth a look and a lovely walk along the river soon built an appetite. Watch for the dog on the roof!!! Frightened us to death barking above us!!!

A tranquil waterside setting with outdoor seating in the summer, and interesting little resident characters - two noisy terriers! Order at the bar, and get a plastic box with your cutlery and napkins - very efficient! Salad a little heavy on the red onion.

My wife and I visited on Good Friday at 18.30.We had asked for 19.00 but were told rather coldly it was either 18.30 or 19.30.On entering we went to the bar to order wine for our meal only to be told rather bluntly that wine was only available in 187ml bottles or full bottles and not by the glass.Afterwards on receiving our bill the 187ml bottle had a £4.50 price tag!The food arrived quite quickly,my wife was presented with a steak and ale pie which looked like it had been in the oven from the day before ,the crust defied all attempts to cut it and the beef was dry.I had ordered chicken and mushroom sauce which came with carrots and broccoli which I asked to swap for peas ,this request was bluntly denied being told this is a set menu. All in all not a pleasant experience and certainly not worth another visit. Also I must add that at the time a had asked for my original booking at 19.00 the dining room was nearly empty.Fawlty Towers customer service at it's best!

My husband and I have been coming here for 3 years now and have never had a bad meal.... Until today. We both had work early this morning and decided to come here as a treat for lunch. It takes us about an hour and a half to drive here, so not just round the corner for us. Both looking forward to our meals we arrived early afternoon. The pub was fairly quiet, we didn't want anything big so we both ordered a sausage baguette, but instead of having onion with it we wanted cheese. When ordering the server told my husband that "we may get some crisps with it" . Odd comment I thought, when on the menu it said all served with a salad and some crisps. When our food arrived we had 3 sausages in a baguette, and some grated cheese on the side, no salad or crisps in sight. We presumed that the cheese would be in the baguette and the salad and crisps on the plate too. We asked the server about the salad to which she replied "oh yes I forgot" . About 5 minutes later the man server brought us a plate with a few leaves, 2 slices of tomato, 3 slices of cucumber, a piece of beetroot and a "dollop" of coleslaw. Accompanied by about 6 crisps. I said "is this just one? Or for both of us?" He replied "both of you" pitiful side salad I had ever seen for two people. During our visit no one offered us a check back or if everything was ok, even when our plates were cleared. We went to the bar to pay our bill and even then we weren't asked if everything was ok. That is the first time I have ever left a restaurant feeling hungry. When asking for a manager we were told there wasn't anyone available. Basically we had a hotdog for £7.50. NOT happy.

The roast special was tasteless and the jacket potato with cheese inedible.. We did mention it politely to the bar staff, who just shrugged his shoulders and walked off! The Restaurant is in a great position and desperately needs owners who can produce better food and have received customer training.

We have eaten here several times and always enjoyed our visit. The basic menu is typical pub food but the specials always have several unusual dishes. It can be busy in summer with slightly slower service but with the river to look out on it doesn't matter. Always at least two real ales available which are very well kept. The side salad is a real treat, it has everything and there is enough for two people.

There was 7 of us, sat round a lovely oval table in the centre of the room, but the chairs are so uncomfortable...all the cushion pads in the seats has worn away...it wasn't just me, we ALL felt low down from the table top & felt the hard springs on our buttocks!I challenge the owner to try these chairs for a few hours!! The overall meals were lovely, the steaks would of been 100% better if served with onion rings/mushrooms/salad garnish etc...friendly staff...lovely puddings :-))

I have used this restuarant several times in the past and have always been happy with the food and staff, on this visit I had with me my fiancee who had never been to the jenny's before and she was really impressed with the food, as normal a high standard in all respects was achieved, the food was hot and tasty , the staff friendly and the atmosphere very welcoming, I really can't understand where some of these negative reviews come from as the standard of food is excellent and value for money is high . I for one shall happily continue to use the jenny's on many more occasions

Great setting, lovely staff but such a boring menu. My Partner really likes this place but I really struggle to find something appealing to eat and usually end up having a salad. The service is great and the food is fine, solid home cooking - rather like my mother would do, over cooked vegetables etc. I know it doesn't sell itself as a Gastro pub and if it's what it's clientele want.... but a couple of nice "adventurous" specials would be nice.

After reading the reviews we have to say that we were very disappointed with our visit. We had the 3-course menu which was adequate but not at all exciting. Whilst each course was well cooked, the sauces and accompaniments lacked subtlety and flavours were not well balanced. Difficult to justify a Michelin star on this performance. Over the years we have used a number of Michelin restaurants but sadly this rates as the worst we have visited. It was highly priced and certainly not worth the money we were charged.

Would be a half decent pub if the landlord had manners & was polite. Never known such shocking customer service & disgusting manners. Avoid, use pubs within Downham Market.
